In kindergarten, my teacher handed me child-safe scissors. As I squeezed my fingers into the handles, the paper turned into a mess. She sighed, “Try harder.” What she didn’t know was that I had just begun my lifelong fight against a world built for the right hand.
That fight follows me everywhere. Lecture seats with desks on the right twist my body like a knot and leave handwriting that looks like a doctor’s notes. Scissors, zippers, notebooks and even door handles seem to work against us. When I took up guitar in college, my instructor looked at me as if I had done something strange. Apparently, left-handed guitars are “special order” — code for twice the price, half the sympathy.
You’d think a few legends would change things. Paul McCartney flipped his bass and changed music forever. Rafael Nadal trained his left hand to become a tennis champion. Even Isaac Newton was left-handed. But no. Despite all these famous lefties, the world still treats us like some kind of oddity. My grandmother, for instance, once tied my left hand behind my back. “Use your right,” she ordered. I tried — and spilled a whole bowl of soup on the floor. She gave up, muttering, “Maybe she’s special.” I think she meant “hopeless.”
Science, of course, has my back. Researchers say lefties are more creative and better at problem-solving. It’s no surprise we’re common among artists, musicians, and athletes. When you’ve spent your life wrestling with scissors and doorknobs that don’t fit, a blank page or a tennis racket feels like child’s play.
Even so, the daily comedy continues. At restaurants, I’ve developed a sixth sense for table positioning — always to the left of right-handers. People still stare sometimes, but I’ve come to enjoy it. Being left-handed isn’t just about using a different hand — it’s about thinking differently, adapting constantly, and laughing through the chaos. After all, in a right-handed world, being left isn’t wrong — it’s just brilliantly inconvenient.
24.What do we know about the author’s guitar instructor?
A.He thought her playing odd. B.He placed a special guitar order.
C.He suggested changing her habit. D.He felt sympathy for left-handers.
25.Why does the author mention several celebrities?
A.To celebrate influential figures. B.To show fame fails to end bias.
C.To inspire disadvantaged groups. D.To prove ability earns recognition.
26.What strength do left-handers possess according to researchers?
A.Natural talent for children’s games. B.Smooth adaptation to surroundings.
C.Good command of regularly-used tools. D.Exceptional competence in solving problems.
27.What is the author’s present attitude towards being left-handed?
A.Proud and casual. B.Relieved and optimistic.
C.Confused and hesitant. D.Resigned and unconcerned.

A wildfire burns in the hills of a Los Angeles suburb, moving quickly from dry brush toward a cluster of homes. The landscaping at the first house catches fire, but the house itself stubbornly refuses to burn. Any small flames that start along its walls quickly die out. Surprisingly, there is no water in sight. The flames are being put out by sound waves. This type of sound-based fire control may soon play a vital role in fighting wildfires. Understanding this requires knowing fire’s nature.
The key ingredients for a fire are heat, fuel, and oxygen. Remove any one, and the fire stops. Sound waves can stop a fire by pushing oxygen molecules away from the fuel, preventing the fire from getting the air it needs to continue its burning reaction. Geoff Bruder, an engineer who previously researched energy at NASA, co-founded Sonic Fire Tech (Sonic for short) to build a machine for this purpose.
He explains that the device vibrates the oxygen faster than the fuel can use it, which effectively blocks the chemical reaction. The company has successfully demonstrated fire control from distances up to 25 feet away. Using sound waves to fight fires isn’t a brand-new concept. US research agencies and universities have studied the method for over a decade. However, Albert Simeoni, a fire protection expert, points out the real challenge: scaling up the technology without creating damaging sound effects. Sonic solves this challenge by using infrasound (次声). Unlike previous efforts using 30 — 60 hertz waves, Sonic stays at or below 20 hertz. Therefore, these waves are inaudible (听不见的) to people and travel farther than higher-frequency waves.
This technology is practical because homes often catch fire from embers entering roof openings. Sonic’s system uses a device powered by an electric motor to create sound waves, which travel through metal pipes installed on the roof and under its edges. The system activates automatically when sensors detect a flame, creating a kind of force field of infrasound to stop it. Experts note that sound waves generally work best on small flames. Nevertheless, homeowners and public-service companies are eager to try it. Sonic is working with two California companies to demonstrate its technology, and aims to have 50 pilot installations by early 2026.
28.How did the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?
A.By describing a scene. B.By listing numbers.
C.By making a comparison. D.By introducing a concept.
29.What is the key to sound waves putting out a fire according to the text?
A.Removing the burning material physically.
B.Keeping oxygen away from the burning fuel.
C.Reducing the surrounding temperature rapidly.
D.Lowering the temperature of the flames directly.
30.What can be inferred about Sonic Fire Tech’s use of infrasound?
A.It pioneers the use of sound to fight fires.
B.It is designed to produce audible fire alarms.
C.It significantly lowers the cost of firefighting.
D.It fixes a key problem in earlier sound methods.
31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The growing threat of wildfires in the suburbs.
B.An innovative sound technology for firefighting.
C.The science behind putting out fires with sound.
D.A comparison between sound and water for fire control.

To get more EVs on the road, scientists are working to charge a car in the same time that it takes to fuel up at a gas station.
Electric vehicles are quieter, easier to repair and maintain, and far better for the environment than traditional cars. Still, numbers of EVs on the road are trailing behind the cars they’re supposed to replace, in part due to charging times. While fueling a gas car takes minutes, charging an EV can take much longer. The fastest public chargers (Level 3) can charge a battery to 80% in about 20 minutes, but slower and more common Level 2 chargers take hours, and Level 1 chargers at home can take days.
Scientists believe faster charging is possible by advancing battery science and charging technology. The goal is to approach refueling speed without compromising on safety or the long-term life of the battery.
The core challenge is electrochemistry. EV batteries have two electrodes (anode and cathode). During charging, lithium ions must move back to the anode. If they move too quickly, they can get “stuck”, reducing efficiency and potentially causing a short circuit or fire. Venkat Srinivasan of Argonne National Laboratory compares this to “getting 100 people into a narrow room” — all trying to pass through one small door. Researchers are exploring new battery chemistries to create multiple microscopic pathways for ions, easing congestion.
Another approach involves smarter charging software. Current charging uses a steady flow of electricity, which slows as the battery fills. By adjusting the current based on the battery’s condition — for example, increasing it when the battery is around 30% charged and resistance is low — researchers at Idaho National Laboratory believe charging can be made both faster and safer.
While research aims to replicate the gas-station experience, experts note that ultra-fast charging will mainly serve long trips or emergencies. For daily use, slower charging at home or work will remain the norm. “We drive to get from A to B,” says Idaho National Laboratory’s Tim Pennington, “not because we like going to the gas station. We don’t need a ten-minute charge every day.”
32.How does the author present the issue of EV adoption in the first two paragraphs?
A.By providing statistical data on sales.
B.By citing experts’ conflicting opinions.
C.By comparing charging and refueling times.
D.By listing the environmental advantages of EVs.
33.What does the author try to illustrate by mentioning “100 people”?
A.The collaboration among scientists. B.The need for more charging stations.
C.The physical bottleneck in fast charging. D.The complexity of battery manufacturing.
34.What is a key function of smarter charging software?
A.User-chosen charging speed.
B.Overheating prevention during charging.
C.Fast charging from ordinary home outlets.
D.Current adjusted to the state of the battery.
35.What can we learn about ultra-fast chargers in daily life?
A.They are largely unnecessary for routine use.
B.They are considered essential for all EV users.
C.They are seen as equally important as home charging.
D.They are believed to eventually replace all slower chargers.

If you have ever interacted with a playful puppy, a darling kitten, or any other adorable creature, chances are that you’ve experienced an overwhelming urge to pet, squeeze, or even pinch them. 36 It is a response that is likely linked to our innate drive to nurture and protect our young.
37 A questionnaire to measure the levels of cute aggression experienced was given to the participants of the study. Researchers found that people tend to feel a stronger “cute aggression” response towards baby animals and pictures of digitally enhanced human babies with enlarged features. They also found that seeing cute things triggers the brain’s emotion and reward systems. Someone may feel so overwhelmed with emotions that they have become unmanageable. The brain’s strategy to regulate this imbalance is to express an “opposite” emotion to avoid excessive emotional exertion. 38 This phenomenon is called a dimorphous expression (二态表达) of emotion.
A second study also confirmed that cute aggression is a way of regulating emotions. When people are overwhelmed by a strong emotion, they develop distorted negative behavior called “duplicity”, in which what they do does not correspond to what they think. But cute aggression doesn’t equal abusive violence. 39
Now that you know why you feel the urge to squeeze unbearably cute and fluffy things, there’s no need to worry about these aggressive tendencies. 40 If you feel the urge to pinch, bite, or even “grind your teeth” when you see cute animals, don’t worry — this is not “sadistic tendencies”, but the brain is trying to control itself.
A.The brain uses aggression to balance the overwhelming positive emotions of the two systems.
B.A study in 2018 sought to comprehend the brain activity triggering cute aggression.
C.The stronger the feelings of cute aggression, the stronger the urge to flee.
D.They’re a normal part of our response to adorable creatures.
E.On the contrary, cute aggression can foster collaboration between people.
F.The former is a positive emotion that does not lead to real violent actions.
G.This instinctive impulse is commonly referred to as cute aggression.

“And that’s why I think I’d be good for this job,” I finished typing, and then I smiled before remembering that my potential employer could not see me. We were talking online, via social media. We had not met in person yet. But from what I had read of her requirements for a personal assistant, I knew I wanted the position. She even had a little dog who had the final say on any applicants. “Your puppy sounds so cute,” I added. “I love dogs.” Then, I started to worry that typing that was too much at this early stage and moved my fingers away from the keys, stopping myself from adding anything more.
The bubbles appeared on screen, showing that the lady was typing something in response, when there was an urgent knock at the front door. I heard my neighbor’s call. She sounded upset. I hurried downstairs, answered the door and asked, “What’s going on?” My neighbour clutched (紧紧抓住) her little dog. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. “We were attacked,” she wept. “Big dog. It bit Marley.” Marley was quiet in her arms but alert. Thankfully, there was not much blood. “Are you okay? ” I asked. She nodded shakily. “Yes. It didn’t go for me. But Marley is hurt.” “Okay. Then let’s take Marley to the vet’s.”
I took the stairs two at a time. I was supposed to be in the middle of an interview. There was more writing from my potential employer on the screen, but I took no time to read it. I quickly wrote: “So sorry. Have to go. Neighbour’s dog hurt, taking to vet’s.” I clicked send and did not wait for an answer, just snatched my bag and ran back downstairs.
The trip to the veterinary hospital was quiet. My neighbour silently wept in the front passenger seat while I drove and tried to comfort Marley. He made no noise, just quietly shivering (颤抖), and looked at me with his hopeless, black eyes. A broken front leg was the diagnosis (诊断). And shock. After some treatment, it was determined that Marley was well enough to take home.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;2. 请按如下格式在答题纸的相应位置作答。
It was midnight when we got back.

This saying teaches us that every great achievement starts with a single act, emphasizing the importance of courage in turning dreams into reality.
Learning to play the guitar perfectly exemplifies this. For a long time, I was frightened by complex chords and sore fingers, only dreaming of playing a full song. The journey truly began when I decided to practice fifteen minutes daily. That first awkward step built momentum; gradually, those sessions accumulated, and within months, I could confidently play several songs.
Thus, the proverb reminds us that grand visions only materialize when we dare to start. Embrace humble beginnings, for they are the seeds of future success.

67.阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

But, as I scrolled (滚动) through the messages, I could see she was still online.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 It was midnight when we got back. I helped my neighbor settle Marley on a soft cushion, fetching warm water and the vet’s medication. Her eyes brimmed with gratitude as she thanked me repeatedly, her voice still shaky from the day’s panic. Exhausted, I trudged back home, my mind racing with worry about the abandoned interview. Would the employer think I was irresponsible? I hesitated before opening the chat, dreading the worst — maybe a cold rejection or no reply at all.
But, as I scrolled through the messages, I could see she was still online. My heart sank as I clicked the chat box, only to gasp at her words: “Your kindness to Marley says more than any interview. A personal assistant needs empathy above all, and you’ve proven that.” She added a photo of her own puppy, asking how Marley was faring. Overjoyed, I shared updates about the little dog, and we soon restarted the interview. By dawn, I’d landed the job — proof that doing the right thing, even when it’s unplanned, always pays off.

27.What is the author’s present attitude towards being left-handed?
A.Proud and casual. B.Relieved and optimistic.
