Giving plants is one way to try if the recipient is already a plant-lover. Here are some sure to impress as thoughtful gifts. Jade Plant The jade plant is a large succulent (肉质植物) that makes a perfect gift for someone who’s mastered parenting succulents. With a woody stem (茎), it looks like a tree once growing tall enough. Besides occasional watering and a bright window, the jade plant has few other requirements. A good challenge for ambitious owners is to regularly cut off its heavy leaves to reduce weight. Christmas Cactus This is a succulent with eye-catching flowers that appear in winter. You might assume it a picky plant, but nothing could be further than the truth. It prefers bright, indirect light and grows well in average potting soil. This plant prefers a steady watering schedule, especially in winter. To encourage more growth, plant it in a hanging container that allows its branches to hang down. Paperwhite Some people just aren’t interested in keeping houseplants around long-term, and paperwhite flowers are an excellent gift for anyone you know who fits this mould. Paperwhites grow from bulbs (鳞茎) and will produce flowers out of season. The roots need to be kept relatively damp, but once they are blooming (开花), there’s not much that can go wrong. They can be replanted outside after they have run their course. Corn Plant The corn plant is forgiving of variable light conditions and watering routines. It grows slowly, but can reach a height of four to six feet, and can make an impressive floor plant. Its leaves turn paler in direct sunlight to reflect the extra light, and darker green in shady conditions to maximize sunlight absorption. 1. Which plant requires practised gardening experience? A. Jade plant. B. Christmas cactus. C. Paperwhite. D. Corn plant. 2. How can we help a Christmas cactus grow well? A. By replanting it outside before blooming. B. By watering it regularly during blooming. C. By cutting off most of its heavy leaves. D. By making its branches grow upwards. 3. What affects the colour of leaves of a corn plant? A. The frequency of watering. B. Its flowering time. C. Its rate of growing. D. The amount of sunlight. A 2. B 3. 根据Jade Plant介绍中的第一句“The jade plant is a large succulent that makes a perfect gift for someone who’s mastered parenting succulents. (玉石植物是一种大型多肉植物,对于那些精通多肉植物的人来说,这是一个完美的礼物)”可知,Jade plant是一种大型多肉植物,需要熟练的园艺经验。故选A。 根据 Christmas Cactus介绍中的第一句“This is a succulent with eye-catching flowers that appear in winter. (这是一种多肉植物,在冬天开着引人注目的花)”和第四句“This plant prefers a steady watering schedule, especially in winter. (这种植物喜欢固定的浇水时间,尤其是在冬天)”可知,在冬季规律浇水能帮助圣诞仙人掌长得好。故选B。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据Corn Plant介绍中的最后一句“Its leaves turn paler in direct sunlight to reflect the extra light, and darker green in shady conditions to maximize sunlight absorption. (它的叶子在阳光直射下变浅以反射额外的光线,在阴暗的条件下变深绿色,以最大限度地吸收阳光)”可知,光照量会影响玉米叶子的颜色。故选D。 B Aged 15 in high school, I was talkative and outgoing, often betting that nobody else would do their homework, so I needn’t either. I did not enjoy geometry (几何), although I liked the philosophical approach of our teacher, Mrs Trenholm. She told us that geometry was about humankind’s ability to work things out. A month or so into the year we started on Euclidean geometry. We were all struggling and I was probably the most vocal (敢于直言的) in class about it. Mrs Trenholm set us homework — to prove two angles in a complex geometric shape are equal. She pulled me aside as we were leaving class and said, “Don’t talk your way out of this.” I went home, worked on it for 20 minutes and gave up. Later I decided to try again. My handwriting was messy, and I noticed that if I made the diagram neater and bigger, I could see where I probably went wrong. At about 5 am, I got it and felt like my brain had been rewired! I handed it in the next day. Mrs Trenholm would never embarrass students in front of everyone. So she came to me and handed me the paper with a little check mark in the corner. She looked right at me and asked, “Did you do this?” When I said yes, she nodded and went back to the front of the class, declaring, “One of you now understands Euclidean geometry. Let’s keep going so everybody will get it.” From then on, I found that if I concentrated and worked hard, I could understand and even enjoy a subject. I went on to study maths and physics at university, took a master’s degree in applied science and became a nuclear research scientist. I became someone who no longer allowed myself the freedom to talk myself out of dealing with problems, or give up when things seemed too difficult. 4. How can we describe the author from the first two paragraphs? A. He had trouble studying geometry. B. He always had bets with others. C. He was absorbed in philosophy. D. He was not skilled at socializing. 5. Why did Mrs Trenholm pull the author aside after class? A. To warn him not to talk too much. B. To give him some tips on homework. C. To encourage him to try more approaches. D. To make him take homework seriously 6. What was Mrs Trenholm’s first feeling about the author’s homework? A. Disbelieving. B. Relieved. C. Disapproving. D. Excited. 7. What did the author want to express through the last paragraph? A. He would go for more freedom. B. That lesson taught him to think twice. C. The maths puzzle was a life changer. D. His university life was pretty colorful. A 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第二段“We were all struggling and I was probably the most vocal (敢于直言的) in class about it.(我们都学得很吃力,我可能是班上对此最直言不讳的一个。)” 故选A项。 根据第二段“She pulled me aside as we were leaving class and said, “Don’t talk your way out of this.”(我们正要离开教室时,她把我拉到一边说:“别想靠说话蒙混过关。”)” 根据第四段“She looked right at me and asked, “Did you do this?” (她直视着我问道:“是你做的吗?”)”可知,老师对作者的家庭作业最初是不相信。故选A项。 根据最后一段“From then on, I found that if I concentrated and worked hard, I could understand and even enjoy a subject.(从那以后,我发现只要专心努力,我就能理解甚至喜欢一门学科。)” C World leaders and climate negotiators will gather at the climate meeting in Glasgow, Scotland for two weeks starting on October 31. Their goal is to be carbon neutral (碳中和) by 2050, which means if a country is still emitting (排放) greenhouse gases, they are being absorbed by forests or other means to keep them from entering the atmosphere. But negotiations are expected to be tough. Here are the reasons why. Developing countries argue that although they hold the top spot for highest emissions currently, but history matters. Once emitted, carbon dioxide can last in the atmosphere for hundreds of years, trapping heat that raises global temperatures. That means emissions from burning fossil (化石) fuels over the past 150 years are responsible for the current global warming. Over that period, developing countries contributed just a small percentage of the emissions. But they’re suffering more from extreme climate change events like rising seas, heavy rain, wildfires, hurricanes, plant and animal extinction. Another dark reality is that developing nations will not be able to adapt to all the climate-caused disasters without help. For example, sea level rise already threatens to overtake some island nations entirely. Such loss and damage, developing countries say, is not their fault. So they need financial support to help them adjust. To help them switch from fossil fuels to greener energies and adapt to the effects of climate change, the developed world has promised to provide $ 100 billion every year. The amount is identified as a floor, not a ceiling. So that financial aid will keep going up over time. But only a few rich countries, including France, Japan, Norway, Germany and Sweden, provided a fair share. The United States, Australia and Canada fell far short. A new solution proposed this week is for the payments to average $ 100 billion per year from 2021 to 2025, with the shortfall in earlier years made up for by higher payments later on. Developing countries also insist that half of the money go to projects aimed at helping them adapt to climate change. At the moment, most of the funding goes toward reducing emissions. 8. What does carbon neutral most probably mean? A. Net zero greenhouse gas emission. B. No greenhouse gases to be produced. C. Greenhouse gases absorbed by forests. D. Zero greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. 9. What can be learned about the financial aid? A. All rich countries have paid their share on time. B. $ 100 billion is payment for island nations’ losses. C. It is promised that it will keep increasing over time. D. Most of it will be used on climate-adapting projects. 10. Why are the negotiations in Glasgow expected to be tough? A. Developed countries ignore their historical responsibilities. B. Developed countries refused to help developing countries. C. Developed and developing countries have very different interests. D. Developed and developing countries disagree on all the climate goals. 11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. Different Climate Challenges Faced by Developed and Developing Nations B. Global Cooperation Needed Between Developed and Developing Countries C. Developed Nations’ Failure to Keep Their Promises on Emission Reduction D. Tensions Between the Developed and Developing Worlds Over Climate Change 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. C 11. 根据第一段“Their goal is to be carbon neutral (碳中和) by 2050, which means if a country is still emitting (排放) greenhouse gases, they are being absorbed by forests or other means to keep them from entering the atmosphere.(他们的目标是到2050年达到碳中和,这意味着,如果一个国家仍在排放温室气体,它们会被森林吸收,或通过其他方式阻止它们进入大气)”可知,所谓的碳中和是指净排放量为零,即新排放的温室气体会通过森林或其他方法被吸收,从而保持大气中的温室气体总量不会再增加。故选A项。 根据第四段“So that financial aid will keep going up over time.(所以财政援助会随着时间的推移不断增加)”可知,该项目的资金额度还会逐年增加。 D When photojournalist Jasper Doest was sent to document the coexistence of humans and wildlife in Romania for National Geographic’s November issue, he found a story on the road after meeting a tourist who told him that she’d been feeding bears on the roadside in a conservation area. “She showed me pictures in which the bears were waiting for human handouts on the roadside,” says Doest. “I realized tourists amazed by the region’s brown bears tend to feed them, with catastrophic effects. Usually shy around people, it takes just a few meals to get bears hooked on human food, and, after that, they don’t stay wild long. Instead, they can become dependent on humans for food.” Bears fed by humans become problem bears. In 2023, there were 95 bear incidents in the region, and a hiker was killed this summer, forcing officials to raise the country’s annual kill quota (配额) from 220 to 481 bears. This can also have unintended consequences for conservation, fueling resistance to rewilding efforts, like the one undertaken by Foundation Conservation Carpathia. “It makes a lot of sense that the community does not welcome forest conservation, because more forest means more bears,” Doest says. While driving along the way, Doest even documented a mother bear whose leg had been lost to a traffic accident or a trap. “The only way she can raise her babies is by begging for food along that road. It is a reality that puts them in danger,” he says. “In the days that followed, I saw more examples of how tourists’ handouts had changed the delicate ecosystem they were visiting.” Doest warns that it isn’t just about rewilding. It’s about the opportunities and struggles rewilding brings us. “It’ s about how to accept nature in our lives, and how we could benefit if we do it the right way,” he says. “So don’t feed the bears. Then you could save an animal’s life, and a community’s commitment to wildlife conservation, along the way.” 12. Which is closest in meaning to “catastrophic” in paragraph 2? A. Immediate. B. Unknown. C. Temporary. D. Disastrous. 13. What does Jasper Doest think of the resistance to rewilding efforts? A. Understandable. B. Unreasonable. C. Interesting. D. Ineffective. 14. What does the fifth paragraph focus on? A. Consequences of feeding wild bears. B. The need to control traffic in the region. C. Various challenges faced by little bears. D. Unexpected effects on forest conservation. 15. What is Jasper Doest’s suggestion? A. Stop rewilding immediately. B. Raise the country’s annual kill quota. C. Avoid feeding the wild bears. D. Keep tourists from the conservation areas. D 13. A 14. A 15. 根据原文第二段““I realized tourists amazed by the region’s brown bears tend to feed them, with catastrophic effects. Usually shy around people, it takes just a few meals to get bears hooked on human food, and, after that, they don’t stay wild long. Instead, they can become dependent on humans for food.” 根据原文第四段“This can also have unintended consequences for conservation, fueling resistance to rewilding efforts, like the one undertaken by Foundation Conservation Carpathia. “It makes a lot of sense that the community does not welcome forest conservation, because more forest means more bears,” Doest says.(这也可能对自然保护产生意想不到的后果,加剧对重新野生化努力的抵制,就像喀尔巴西亚自然保护基金会所做的那样。“社区不欢迎森林保护很有道理,因为更多的森林意味着更多的熊,”Doest说)”可知,Doest认为对重新野生化努力的抵制是可以理解的。故选A项。 根据原文第五段“While driving along the way, Doest even documented a mother bear whose leg had been lost to a traffic accident or a trap.(驱车途中,Doest甚至拍到了一只母熊,它因交通事故或陷阱失去了一条腿。)”及““In the days that followed, I saw more examples of how tourists’ handouts had changed the delicate ecosystem they were visiting.”(“在接下来的几天里,我看到了更多事例,说明游客的投喂已经改变了这片地区脆弱的生态系统。”)” 故选A。 根据原文最后一段““So don’t feed the bears. Then you could save an animal’s life, and a community’s commitment to wildlife conservation, along the way.” (“所以,不要投喂熊。这样做,你不仅能挽救一个动物的生命,还能守护当地社区对野生动物保护的责任感。”)” 可知,Jasper Doest的建议是不要投喂野生熊。故选C。 第二节 (共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分 12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 In our daily life,we will often have a bottle of water with us when we go anywhere and most of the time we will drink everything. ___16___ We usually throw water bottles into the trash because we know nothing special about plastic bottles. However, there are many interesting things you can do with empty plastic bottles! Separate eggs. Do you find it challenging to isolate eggs? In some recipes, you need egg yolk (the round yellow part in the middle of an egg) and white eggs but this process is a bit hard. ____17____ Break the egg into a bowl. Remove the lid (盖子) from the bottle and pinch (捏) a little. Then continue the pressure, put the ends into the egg yolk and stop the pressure. This way, the egg yolk will be absorbed into the bottle while the egg white will remain on the plate. ___18___ Making biscuits and just realized you didn’t have any tools to cut them? Plastic bottles will give you a solution again. Making a homemade biscuit cutter from plastic bottles is the best way to reuse plastic bottles as you never know the situation when you need to use it. You just need a small or large plastic bottle depending on your needs. ___19___ Make air conditioners. ___20___ You just need a fan and two bottles of iced water. Sometimes, the fan removes hot air and does not cool the room but now we have a solution for you! Fill two large bottles with water and freeze until ice. Then, place the bottle on the floor or on the table for a high fan. Put the fan behind the bottle and the fan will blow the cold air as the frozen bottle causes the temperature to decrease. A. Cut off the biscuits. B. But what happens after we drink it? C. But why should we reuse these bottles after when drink it? D. Don’t worry. You can solve this problem with plastic bottles. E. You can make your own air conditioning with plastic bottles. F. It’s very common to cool a room in summer with air conditioners. G. Cut the bottle into half and take one of two sections to cut the biscuits. B 17. D 18. A 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 上文提到“In our daily life,we will often have a bottle of water with us when we go anywhere and most of the time we will drink everything.(在我们日常生活中,无论去哪里我们经常会带上一瓶水,而且大多数情况下我们会把它喝完。)”,说明人们外出时通常会带水并喝完,B选项“But what happens after we drink it?(但是我们喝完之后会发生什么呢?)” 【17题详解】 上文提到“In some recipes, you need egg yolk (the round yellow part in the middle of an egg) and white eggs but this process is a bit hard.(在一些食谱中,你需要蛋黄(鸡蛋中间圆形的黄色部分)和蛋白,但这个过程有点困难。)” You can solve this problem with plastic bottles.(别担心。你可以用塑料瓶来解决这个问题。)”提出了一个解决方案,即使用塑料瓶来分离蛋黄和蛋白,与上文内容连贯。故选D。 【18题详解】 下文提到“Making biscuits and just realized you didn’t have any tools to cut them?(做饼干时才意识到你没有任何工具来切它们?)”以及“Plastic bottles will give you a solution again.(塑料瓶又会给你一个解决方案。)” 故选A。 【19题详解】 上文提到“You just need a small or large plastic bottle depending on your needs.(你只需要一个小或大的塑料瓶,根据你的需要。)”,说明需要根据需求选择合适的塑料瓶;G选项“Cut the bottle into half and take one of two sections to cut the biscuits.(把瓶子切成两半,用其中一半来切饼干。)” 【20题详解】 下文提到“You just need a fan and two bottles of iced water.(你只需要一个风扇和两瓶冰水。)” It was a cheerful morning, as bright as my face when I learned I had come first in the drawing competition. And how will you explain to our parents?” John said. “I will say a friend lent it to me.” “You are lying. Oh, dear! When did you turn so dishonest?” said Emily. We can talk to her and ask her to come and take back her phone.” Emily was trying to persuade her brother to change his mind. That night, John turned over in bed from time to time. B Aged 15 in high school, I was talkative and outgoing, often betting that nobody else would do their homework, so I needn’t either. C World leaders and climate negotiators will gather at the climate meeting in Glasgow, Scotland for two weeks starting on October 31. Tensions Between the Developed and Developing Worlds Over Climate Change D When photojournalist Jasper Doest was sent to document the coexistence of humans and wildlife in Romania for National Geographic’s November issue, he found a story on the road after meeting a tourist who told him that she’d been feeding bears on the roadside in a conservation area. In our daily life,we will often have a bottle of water with us when we go anywhere and most of the time we will drink everything. ___16___ We usually throw water bottles into the trash because we know nothing special about plastic bottles.
