Dear English Club,
I am Li Hua from Class 1, Senior 3. I would like to submit a photo for the upcoming Student Activity Picture Exhibition to celebrate the visit of our sister school from Ireland.
I have selected an impressive photo that captures the essence of one of our school’s most cherished traditions. The photo features students from various grades coming together during our annual multicultural day event. The vibrant colors of the different national flags, students in traditional attire (礼服), and the smiles on everyone’s faces create a heartwarming and inclusive atmosphere. I believe this photo is an excellent representation of our school’s commitment to diversity, cultural exchange, and the strong sense of community that we all share.
Thank you for considering my submission, and I look forward to the possibility of it being selected for the exhibition. Attached is the photo. Best wishes! (127w)
I was completely knocked out by the news. Without Emma’s voice to guide me, I would definitely mess up and this was not how everything was supposed to go! As I stood there, feeling at a loss, a gentle touch on my shoulder brought me back to reality. It was my mom, wearing a comforting smile. After having a brief idea of my story, she said in a firm tone, “You’ve worked so hard. You can make it on your own.” Memories of countless rehearsal came flooding back, drowning my fears and losses. Swinging into action, I adjusted my performance to a solo, practicing in no time.
Finally came the big moment. Taking a deep breath, I stepped onto the stage, enveloped in the glow of the lights. At first, my voice trembled with nervousness, but as the song progressed, my confidence soared. I poured my emotions into the performance, letting my voice carry my feelings into the air. The crowd watched in awe, their applause and cheers echoing in the hall. Facing the overwhelming response, I knew that I had conquered my fears. Yes, the unexpected discouragement can be a blessing in disguise if we have a belief in ourselves and never give up our dreams.

Text 1
W: Hi, I’m trying to sign up for a psychology class.
M: Well, currently we have two classes open. One is on Tuesday afternoon and the other Friday morning.
W: Thank you. I have swimming sessions in the afternoons, so I guess I’ll take the one on Fridays.
Text 2
M: Mom, I’m going to cycle around Chao Hu lake this Saturday.
W: Wow, that sounds like quite a challenge. Are you going by yourself?
M: No, with friends from the school bike club. We’ll raise money during the trip for children with heart disease.
Text 3
W: Oh no, I’ve just remembered my parents are coming over for dinner tonight. We don’t have anything to cook with. What am I going to do?
M: Relax, hand me the car key, you start cleaning and I’ll be back with what we need from the supermarket.
Text 4
M: The car broke down again. It’s still in the shop. I think it might finally be time to seriously consider electric like we’ve talked about.
W: Yes, it would be nice to start fresh with a cleaner, quieter ride in a new city. Plus, it’s crazy how much gas prices have gone up recently.
M: Exactly. I’ll look up some local dealers and go test drive one this weekend.
Text 5
W: The documentary about Antarctica was shocking.
M: It was. The ice there is melting so fast, much faster than before.
W: Yeah, it’s alarming. We really need more people to understand the impact. Let’s share the link so more people can see the video.
Text 6
W: Good morning Mr. Davis. I’m calling to see how Max has been doing in class recently.
M: Good morning Mrs. Taylor. Overall, he’s doing well. He gets along with others and works hard, but he seems a bit unsure about some math topics.
W: We haven’t noticed much at home. Is it something to worry about?
M: It’s no big deal, but a little extra support would help.
W: What would you suggest we do first?
M: For now, I’d suggest he talk to the math teacher during lunch this week.
Text 7
M: Hi Lisa, back from the gym?
W: Oh, Bob, hi! Yeah, I just finished a cross-fit class.
M: Cross fit. Wow, that sounds intense. How often do you work out?
W: About an hour a day only on weekdays. You should join me sometime.
M: Maybe I should. By the way, did you hear that our kids school will have PE every day?
W: Yes, I heard about it yesterday when I picked Bella up from school. She was really excited.
M: I’m not surprised. Kids spend a lot of time in class these days, which can make it harder for them to find time for physical activities. David loves running, but he doesn’t always have the opportunity to practice at school.
W: Exactly. The school should offer more PE choices like badminton, martial arts or even dance. Not every child enjoys basketball or football.
Text 8
M: Akane, your skirt looks nice. Did you just get it?
W: Yeah, thanks. I bought it from an online fast fashion store last week. I love the color, but the fabric feels really thin. I don’t think it will last long anyway. Anyway, it was only 13dollars.
M: Wow, that’s cheap. And probably not made to last.
W: Exactly. I used to keep clothes for years, but now I’m replacing things every couple of months.
M: When clothes are that affordable. It’s easy not to treat them carefully.
W: True, we don’t value them as much because they’re cheap and easy to replace.
M: But the worst part is most of these clothes nowadays end up in landfills within a year, wasting a lot of resources.
W: That’s why I’m thinking of making a change, buying fewer but better quality clothes for our wallet and the planet.
Text 9
M: Monica, have you ever lived on a farm?
W: Not really, but I used to visit family friends farms when I was a kid.
M: Did you enjoy it?
W: Yeah, quite a lot. I loved riding horses and wandering through the fields.
M: Sounds great. I spent every summer on my grandfather’s farm when I was a kid. I collected eggs, fed the chickens and brushed the horses. Most importantly, farm life taught me to appreciate every bite of food.
W: I get that, but farm work never stops. It’s an endless cycle of planting, harvesting and maintaining the land almost without a break. I guess I’ve gotten used to city life and working on computers. Could you imagine moving back to a farm?
M: Maybe not full time, but there’s something peaceful about farm life. How about taking our kids to a farm on weekends or during the holidays? They could enjoy the fresh air and learn where food comes from.
W: That’s a great idea. It’s a good way for them to experience it, even if we can’t live that life ourselves.
Text 10
M: First of all, thank you so much for your trust and support. We know how important it is to you that your children stay connected with their roots. That is exactly what our program aims to do, to create more opportunities for overseas Chinese youth to explore and understand their cultural heritage. We designed this journey to turn the stories you share at home into real life experiences. From walking through the Forbidden City to standing on the Great Wall, we want your children to see Chinese culture with their own eyes. Not just hear about it in books or on maps, we also truly appreciate the efforts you make at home, whether it’s encouraging your children to learn the erhu or yang qin, traditional Chinese musical instruments who are supporting their interest in traditional Chinese painting. This program works alongside families to help bring that learning to life. By the end of the journey, we hope your children will not only see more, but also feel more connected to who they are and where they come from. Thank you again for letting us walk this journey with your families as we pass these traditions on to the next generation.

37-year-old Swedish actor Timothy Pilotti uses physical comedy to bring cultural exchanges to the stage. Peking Opera has been a game changer for him, which led him to China and shaped enthusiasm for cultural exchanges.
Pilotti had a childhood love for a Chinese film. “His films blended a lot of acrobatics (杂技) and comedy into the fight scenes,” Pilotti says. Unlike kung fu, primarily a martial art, Peking Opera caught his opinion as a theatrical form designed for the stage with unique way of moving and fighting.
Pilotti decided to become an actor at an early age, studying at acting schools and majoring in physical theater at a Finnish university. During the third year in university, he got the first opportunity to study Peking Opera in China. “Some of my classmates went to India, for example, but my dream was to go to China — it was a no-brainer,” he says. In 2009, he and two other students arrived at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts in Beijing to study Peking Opera for six months.
Although he had no Chinese language skills or background in Peking Opera, teachers from the academy helped him grasp the essence of the performing art form through rigorous teaching and setting high standards.
Traditional Chinese stories enlighten Pilotti. He has created two theatre pieces in recent years, including a story about the Monkey King, the omnipotent (全能的) character from the novel Journey to the West. In the Monkey King, Pilotti embodies the character’s tangibly characteristics through Peking Opera movements, inspiring his young audience members to be themselves. “The Monkey King is a famous character with many adaptations, so the kids already know a bit about him. But, when they can see the character closely in the show, it can be a surprise.”
“My dream now is to do more cultural exchanges and maybe create a show where Chinese Peking Opera and Swedish actors perform together.” Pilotti says.
24. What can we know about Peking Opera and Pilotti from the text?
A Peking Opera is a martial art in Pilotti’s eyes.
B. Peking Opera completely changed Pilotti’s life.
C. Pilotti didn’t like Peking Opera at all as a child.
D. Pilotti grew up with a Peking Opera background.
25. What did Pilotti mean by saying “it was a no-brainer” in paragraph 3?
A. It was a tough decision because he lacked Chinese skills.
B. It was an obvious choice as he dreamed of going to China.
C. He made the decision without any prior knowledge of China.
D. It required extensive brainpower to understand Peking Opera.
26. What kind of person is Pilotti?
A. Original and dedicated. B. Adaptable and rigorous.
C. Passionate and considerate. D. Committed and conventional.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Monkey King: A Huge Success
B. A Swede Acts on Passion for Peking Opera
C. A Swede’s Journey into Chinese Martial Arts
D. Pilotti’s Childhood Dream: From Finland to China
C
AI could make it less necessary to learn foreign languages. That is good news for travellers, bad news for soulful connections.
Travel has long been a motivator for study — unless people start to feel AI tools offer a good-enough service. Some are concerned that apps are turning language acquisition into declining pursuit. Douglas Hofstadter, a writer, has argued that something important will disappear when people talk through machines. He describes giving a hesitant, difficult speech in Mandarin, which required a lot of work but offered a sense of achievement at the end. Who would show off taking a plane to the top of Mount Qomolangma?
Others are less worried. Most people do not move abroad or have the kind of sustained contact with a foreign culture that requires them to put in the work to become fluent. Nor do most people learn languages for the purpose of humanising themselves or training their brains. On their holiday, they just want a beer and pizza.
As AI translation becomes a more popular labour-saving tool, people will divide into two groups. There will be those who want to challenge their minds, put themselves in other cultures or force their thinking into new pathways. This lot will still take on language study often aided by technology. Others will look at learning a new language with a mix of admiration and confusion, as they might with extreme endurance (忍耐力) sports: “Good for you, if that’s your thing, but a bit painful for my taste.”
But a focus on the learner alone misses the fundamentally social nature of language. It is a bit like analysing the benefits of close relationships to heart health but overlooking the inner value of those bonds themselves. When you try to ask directions in broken Japanese or make a joke in halting (结结巴巴的) German, you are making direct contact with someone. And when you speak a language well enough to tell a story with perfect timing or put subtle (微妙的) shadings on an argument, that connection is still deeper.
28. What is “taking a plane to the top of Mount Qomolangma” in Paragraph 2 compared to?
A. Using AI tools to do the translation.
B. Doing the work that gives you satisfaction.
C. Making an effort to learn a new language.
D. Studying a language aided by technology.
29. Which of the following will the “Others” in Paragraph 4 agree with?
A. People should stretch their minds in life.
B. AI translation tools offer a good service.
C. Extreme endurance sports are worth trying.
D. Language learning builds deep connections.
30 What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Language learning benefits learners alone.
B. Language learning is of value to human health.
C. We should reflect on language learning methods.
D. We should adopt a new angle on language learning.
31 What is the author’s attitude towards AI translation tools?
A. Optimistic. B. Critical. C. Reserved. D. Unconcerned.
D
Not only does the use of plastic water bottles hurt your wallet, but it also causes pollution, wastes energy, and surprisingly wastes water. Only 23% of the plastic in America ends up in recycling bins, meaning over $1 billion worth of plastic is treated as rubbish a year. Recently, Skipping Rocks Lab has invented a kind of water bottle called Ooho.
Ooho is designed for large outdoor events where a large number plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. It’s a kind of convenient, clear water bottle that can either be drunk or eaten. To drink it, you can either get rid of the membrane (膜) or tear a hole in the membrane with your teeth to pour the water into your mouth. To eat it, you simply put the whole bottle in your mouth. It’s completely tasteless so you needn’t worry about any taste.
It aims for large outdoor events where tons of plastic bottles are used and frequently left behind as litter. Too much plastic is sure to do harm to the environment, which could account for the purpose of such a new invention.
The team has been working for the past two years to develop the technology and materials that are needed to produce Ooho. The price for an only bubble (泡状物) or a unit of bubbles has not been decided yet, but it costs about two cent to create a unit, which is cheaper than plastic bottles. The team has also been selling Ooho water bottles in London for the past six months.
Ooho is catching many people’s attention and has raised over $1 million in only three days. It’s mostly being sold at events at the moment to interest the buyers while the production machine is getting up and running. It’s quickly making a rise, so keep an eye out for these bottles of the future.
32. How is most plastic in America dealt with?
A. It is reused as new energy. B. It is buried under the ground.
C. It is thrown away as rubbish. D. It is applied to new technology.
3. What can we know about the Ooho?
A. It plans to be sold at a very low price.
B. It has some advantages over plastic bottles.
C. Suitable materials of making Ooho are hard to find.
D. Most people in London use Ooho instead of plastic bottles.
34. What’s the author’s attitude towards Ooho’s future?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Uninterested. D. Worried.
35. Who is probably the article written for?
A. Scientists. B. Experts. C. Environmentalists. D. The public.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business-a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement filled the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.
Para 1 I was completely knocked out by the news.
Para 2 Finally came the big moment.
