Plants may look like they're doing nothing, but they're actually very busy-and pretty
“smart”tool
In the 1980s,two U.S.scientists found that plants can "talk"to each other. They grew
young trees in separate pots and put all the pots in a clear,sealed()box.When they
cut the leaves of one tree, that tree made a chemical to protect itself.About 36 hours-later,the
other trees made the same chemical! This proved the hurt tree had sent an air signal()to
its neighbors.
Later studies showed plants“tal业k”in complex(复杂t的)ways.For example,.they send
different signals if different insects hurt them, and even tell others how far the danger is.
n20l4,Australian scientists tested mimosa(含羞草)plants-they curl(卷曲)their leaves
when touched. The scientists dropped each mimosa 15 cm down 60 times. At first, the plants
curled their leaves, but soon stopped. They leamed the drop wouldn't damage them.
Plants don't have brains,so how do they learn? They have tubes()that move
water and nutrients. When the environment changes, plants make special chemicals. These
chemicals travel through the tubes with messages, helping plants change how they react.
5.Who found the plants can "talk"to each other?
A.Two U.S.scientists.
B.Two Chinese students.
C.One British doctor.
D.An Australian driver.
6.When did the other trees make the same chemical?

B.60 minutes later.
C.36 hours later.
D.10 days later.

By Ella Lovece
Have you ever stood at the start of something new?It could be a great chance or a dream

There is a saying:"If you want to learn how to swim, don't be afraid to get your

When one stage of learning ends, another begins. The future always has surprises. You
might face big challenges, make mistakes,or even fail. It's normal to fear failure, especially
when you care a lot about the result. But don't let that stop you.Failure helps you lear and

Life is full of new "swimming pools"-new challenges that are exciting.Next time you

Protect Your Eyes
Nowadays,shortsightedness is a common phenomenon()among teenagers.Being
short-sighted is inconvenient in a lot of ways. For instance, volleyball is my favorite sport, but
it isn't safe to play volleyball with glasses on.17
From my opinion, developing healthy habits when using our eyes plays a key role in eyesight
protection.18 Furthermore,we need to give our eyes a break by going outside or looking
at something in the distance. That way,we won'tstrain(过度使用l)our eyes.
19
Because the vitamins in them are good for our eyes.Getting enough sleep
also helps keep our eyes healthy.
As the saying goes, the eyes are the windows to the soul.

Better Ways to Snack
Who doesn't like to snack? In a survey, nearly half of American adults reported eating
two or three snacks a day.But many of us are snacking the wrong way. Here is some science-
based snacking advice
Plan your snack time.
You're more likely to add extra calories to your daily total if you snack without planning.
For example,if you have birthday cake at school, you'll probably still eat the family dinner
when you get home. It's fine to overeat once in a while, but doing so often can cause weight
gain. Therefore,it's a good idea to eat your snacks at about the same time every day.
Make wiser choices.
Many typical(典型的)snack foods, such as chips and cookies,,are high in sodium(钠
and added sugars. These highly processed foods affect your brain differently.Once you start
eating them,it's hard to stop.
Fruit is a healthy snack with plenty of vitamins and fiber(维生素和纤维).But you'Il
probably be hungry again an hour after eating just an apple.Try eating fruit with a handful of
nuts. This combination can keep you full for two to three hours.
Avoid nighttime snacking.
Snacking after dinner is usually a bad idea.At night,we are relaxed. We usually don't pay
attention to how healthy something is.We often end up with unhealthy snacks like sweets.
Decide what to-eat ahead of time if you're going to snack at night.Choose something
healthy. This helps you avoid eating anything and everything in the moment.

eyes will be tired.

Paper calendars can also be very pretty. Some have famous paintings.Others have
beautiful photos of animals or tourist spots. These pictures take me on a journey in your

Calendar, for example. Each page introduces an old, beautiful object from the museum's
large collection.Over time,I learn a lot about history.

Last Friday,we had a display named "Beautiful handicrafts"in our school. Many students and teachers were
attracted.
During the event, various wonderful handicrafts were displayed. One standout work was a paper-cutting of a peacock
made by a sophomore. With delicate patters and bright colors,it looked vivid as if the peacock was about to spread
its tail.Another impressive one was a small wooden house crafted by a junior, with tiny windows and a tiled roof.
