Betty and I are best friends. Our birthdays are on the same day, so every year we have a birthday party together. But this year, we had a costume party (化装舞会) instead.
While we were writing the invitations, my mum came in and asked, “Why not invite John?” John had been in our class for only a few months, but he was already getting better grades in math than anyone else in class. I wrinkled (皱起) my nose, “Mum, he wears the same pants to school every day. How could he even afford a costume?” Mum said nothing. The next day, Mum gave me an envelope with a shopping certificate(凭证) in it. “I thought it would be nice for you to give this to John,” Mum said. But how? We didn’t want to make John embarrassed (窘迫的). We discussed it for a long time. Finally, Betty and I had a good idea.
On the day of our party, kids arrived, dressed differently. John arrived, in an old sheet (床单), but still in the same brown pants as usual. We danced, ate snacks and played games in groups. Before eating the birthday cake, Betty said in a loud voice, “Now it’s time for the great prize game. It’s the following riddle…” It was a math game. In September, 2023, NASA astronaut Frank Rubio returned to the Earth from the International Space Station (ISS). He set a record by spending 371 days on the ISS. His efforts were celebrated. But questions remained about a tomato while he was in space.
During his time on the ISS, Mr. Rubio, along with other astronauts, worked on lots of experiments. One of the experiments (实验) was to learn how to grow fruits and vegetables to help feed astronauts on long trips through space.
Mr. Rubio loved working with a little plant of tomato and seeing it grow. When the plant finally produced tomatoes, Mr. Rubio had put the tomato in a plastic bag and showed it to some students on a video call. He believed that he had tied the bag to part of the ISS. But later, he couldn’t find that bag of the tomato! Because there is so little gravity (重力) on the ISS, things can easily float away. Mr. Rubio always believed that was what had happened to the tomato. But the other members of the ISS enjoyed making fun of Mr. Rubio by saying, “You ate the tomato in space, but just didn’t want to admit it!” It became a joke among them.
“I didn’t,” said Mr. Rubio, “I wanted to find it so I could prove (证明) it.” He spent many hours looking for the tomato. His search came up empty. He believed that the tomato had dried out, or someone else had thrown it away.
Recently, the mystery(谜)was solved on a video call. “We found the tomato,” NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli said. She said she could now clear Mr. Rubio’s name. But NASA has not said where the crew found it or what it looked like when discovered.
27. How long did Frank Rubio stay on the ISS?
A. For 3 years. B. For 2 years. C. For over a year. D. For over a month.
28. What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
A. It’s difficult for things to float away on the ISS.
B. Mr. Rubio put the tomato in a bag and showed it.
C. Students made jokes about the tomato through a video call.
D. Mr. Rubio threw the tomato away easily because of gravity.
29. What is the meaning of the underlined word “admit”?
A. have room for something B. fix up a problem with someone
C. say that something is true or real D. take part in an activity with someone
30. What can be the best title for the text?

六、阅读表达(共5小题,满分10分)
“I don’t like my parents. They always tell me that I should do this and should not do that. It sometimes makes me angry,” said Zhang Hua, a middle school student in Guangzhou. Do you have the same problem? Perhaps your parents had the same problem when they were young. Why aren’t some parents so friendly in their children’s eyes?
One of the most important reasons is when someone becomes a parent, he/she often worries about things. Since you were born (出生), your parents have worried about everything about you. They do a lot for you. Though something would make you angry, they care about you and worry about you. They worry about your choice (选择) of friends, the food you eat, your study at school, how much sleep you get and so on. All these things are part of your life, because they want you to grow up healthily and happily.
So how can you make things easier on yourself? It’s easier than you think. Just make sure your parents know what you’re doing. Get them to know your friends. Phone them if you get home later than usual. Say sorry to them when you make mistakes. Talk about your ideas with them and they may talk about theirs with you.
Most of all, try to think why your parents do this or do that. They are still practicing being parents and need help that you can give them. When you become a parent, they may be able to help you learn how to get on with your children.

None of us was surprised when John came up with the right answer first and walked off with the envelope.
Everything went on well as we planned. John wore a new pair of pants and a new shirt the next week. He felt happy. So did we.

Some people work a job all their lives and for them, it is only a way to make a living. But Carole and Russ Cassidy are lucky. They worked as special education teachers with interest and got lots of satisfaction. Now they are retired (已退休的) and luck is still with them.
“We just didn’t want to be sitting and not doing anything,” Carole said. “We tried several things, but they were not meant for us.” Soon, they found the Princeton Public Library’s Children’s Storytime program and wanted to get involved. “We were lucky.
A. Where is the missing tomato? B. How do astronauts grow tomatoes?
