Sandesh Kadur, a National Geographic explorer, has spent 25 years documenting (记录) rare wildlife, changing his childhood interest into a duty to protect Earth’s ecosystems.
When he was young, Kadur was attracted by Corbett’s tales of big cats. Inspired, he once cycled into the jungle with a friend to observe big cats at a watering hole. At night, they really saw a big cat. Bathed in moonlight, he realized his life’s goal: to take photos of nature’s wonders and share them.
At 12, Kadur borrowed his father’s camera — a “magic box” that froze time. His father, a scientist who studies insects, got him looking at the small things. So he began intentionally taking photos of small insects, trying to understand what he was looking at. As he grew older, his love for nature, however, conflicted with academics. Afterwards, he moved to Brownsville, Texas to study hotel management — a choice that unexpectedly refueled his love for storytelling.
In Brownsville, Kadur explored the cloud forests and landed a job as a jungle tour guide. There, he met filmmaker John Bax, who introduced him to documentary work. When they started a documentary project together, Bax withdrew (退出) from it. Kadur, then 19 and untrained in film, carried on the project on his own. He later spent three years in India’s Western Ghats, filming species like the “smoke cat” for the first time. His first film, Sahyadris: Mountains of the Monsoon, brought the Western Ghats’ biodiversity into attention, aiding its 2012 UNESCO World Heritage status.
Through visual storytelling, Kadur offers his audience chances to know about a rarely-seen natural world, calling on them to protect its weak wildlife. “Visual art has told stories for thousands of years. Now we’re doing that with technology, and it will continue to advance.” said Kadur, “I think the influence of storytelling can last a lifetime. It can last generations.”
24. What led Kadur into nature?
A. Corbett’s stories of big cats. B. Working as a jungle tour guide.
C. Borrowing his father’s camera. D. His experience in hotel management.
25. What was his father’s influence on him?
A. Teaching him photography skills. B. Introducing him to documentary work.
C. Helping him regain love for storytelling. D. Arousing his curiosity about scientific details.
26. What is Kadur’s opinion about visual storytelling?
A. It well entertains audiences. B. It serves as a bridge for nature.
C. Its value lies in expression skills. D. Its impact depends on technology.
27. Which of the following words can best describe Kadur?
A. Determined and passionate. B. Talented and humorous.
C. Independent and generous. D. Responsible and serious.

Minnesota, mid-winter. A snowstorm blows through the city, leaving 500,000 homes without power, drivers stuck on highways and flights put off. Meanwhile, forty feet up an electric pole (电线杆), a technician is trying to get the lights back on, but not knowing where to check the fix or how to call for support from the rescue centre.
When disaster hits, frontline workers must mobilize. But, too often, they are going to work armed with last century’s tools. Rescue efforts are running on clipboards (记事板) and piles of paper. And there’s a price: longer power failure, and water supply shut off for longer. This is one of cases calling for Industrial AI. It is AI that is trained to fix specific problems in dangerous situations where, sometimes, life is on the line. And, AI has the power to change how we respond (回应) to disasters.
Before a disaster hits, planners, with the help of an Industrial AI, predict where a heavy storm might move next — and maps a live view of what is at risk. Rescue workers are timely sent to the exact sites as the facts change. And, once technicians are on the job, they will know what’s gone wrong on an image or video and they will finish the fix quickly through AI guidance.
“If we can cut recovery time by getting rescue workers to the right places with the right tools, before the event even hits, then hospitals stay powered, field teams work safely and families return to warm homes faster,” said Brian Burdette, head of the rescue team.
These are AI technologies that are already being tested. But, if we’re to see a real influence, we need to enter into a spirit of openness and cooperation (合作). We need nations and companies to pull together at a system-wide level, not just organization by organization or area by area, catching the chance that industrial AI presents for intelligent responses. For technicians risking their life in a disaster, we owe them that much.
28. What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us about the disaster?
A. Its cause. B. Its type. C. Its influence. D. Its location.
29. What does the underlined “life is on the line” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Time is running out. B. AI is worth its value.
C. People are waiting in line. D. People are risking their lives.
30. What is Brian Burdette’s attitude towards Industrial AI rescue work?
A. Supportive B. Doubtful C. Uncertain D. Objective
31. What does the author suggest about the rescue work in the last paragraph?
A. Cutting recovery time B. Encouraging cooperation.
C. Training skilled technicians. D. Using advanced technology.

A typical single-family house is encircled by green, its shrubs (灌木) and plants sitting just under windows and hugging external walls. It’s an image that California is trying to get homeowners to rethink as the state’s risk of extreme wildfires grows.
One year after the fast-moving Eaton and Palisades Fires destroyed more than 16,000 structures in Los Angeles, California is drafting the toughest statewide rules in the country for vegetation. In areas at risk of wildfires, homeowners would be required to clear some or all of the plants within five feet of their house, depending on what regulators decide. Well-maintained trees would still be allowed. The idea, called Zone Zero, is to prevent plants and flammable items from catching fire during a wildfire, spreading flames to the house and the surrounding neighborhood.
Still, the pushback has been strong, even in the Los Angeles area neighborhoods where so many lost homes. In public meetings, homeowners have voiced concerns about losing greenery and shade, as well as the cost of clearing the vegetation. Some say they believe plants saved their homes by acting as a buffer (缓冲), though many scientific studies show that vegetation increases the risk a building will burn. The new defensible space rules will affect about 17% of buildings in California.
Max Moritz, wildfire specialist at UC Santa Barbara, is one of the few fire experts who say that green plants may not pose a risk to houses and that more research needs to be done. Greener plants, which hold water in their leaves, are harder to ignite. He agrees that some plants, like highly flammable juniper and cypress, should not be allowed, nor should plants with dead leaves or dry branches.
“The really important aspect to the plants is the dead material,” he says. “If most homeowners are just going to let dead material accumulate in Zone Zero anyway, then it makes sense that there shouldn’t be any plants in Zone Zero.”
32. What is California’s concern about typical single-family houses?
A. They are easy to catch fire. B. They need routine maintenance.
C. They are packed closely together. D. They can’t resist extreme weather.
33. Why does the author mention Los Angeles in paragraph 3?
A. To illustrate the severity of wildfires.
B. To show strong objections to the new rules.
C. To emphasize public concerns about wildfires.
D. To indicate the widespread effect of the new rules.
34. According to Moritz, what is the key to preventing wildfires in Zone Zero?
A. Clearing away green plants. B. Watering plants more often.
C. Getting rid of dead material in time. D. Doing more research on plants.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Wildfires: A Deadly threat to California
B. Zone Zero: A New Way to Maintain Plants
C. California is Drafting Toughest Rules for Plants
D. Experts are Divided on the Functions of Greenery

Growing up with ADHD (注意缺陷多动障碍), I struggled all the time to concentrate. If a subject didn’t grab my interest, my brain simply shut down. The frustration of not being able to absorb information made school extremely difficult.
By high school, I had fallen so far behind that attending class seemed pointless. My grades were always at the bottom and publicly posted for all to see, which fueled my shame and anxiety. Eventually, I began skipping classes. No one seemed to care about my potential, and I certainly didn’t see it myself.
Everything began to change when my teacher. Ms. Carter, found me hiding in an empty classroom, writing down my struggles and making drawings in a notebook one day. Ms. Carter watched me quietly for a while before gently saying, “You know, you have a real talent in writing. Why not try writing for the school newspaper?” I had never considered writing for others to see. Hesitantly, I agreed to give it a try. At first. I contributed small pieces, but over time, I took on more responsibility and became an editor.
One day, after a particularly well-received edition, Ms. Carter smiled and said, “You’ve come so far - I’m proud of you.” At her words, I felt my self-confidence rise to new heights. For the first time, I saw myself as bright and smart.
As my confidence grew, so did my expectations about the future. Ms. Carter encouraged me to consider college. All I needed to do was prepare a personal statement that showed my strengths, goals, and why I was a good fit for the college. Despite the push forward, there was still a cloud of uncertainty in the back of my mind. I expressed my thanks to Ms. Carter but said I would think about it.
注意:
1.续写短文的词数为150左右;

When college applications opened, I hesitated. The thought of applying seemed daunting, given my past struggles and the low expectations I had always held for myself. However, I remembered Ms. Carter’s words of encouragement and the sense of accomplishment I had felt as an editor for the school newspaper. Taking a deep breath, I decided to face my fears and submit my application, hoping that my passion for writing and the growth I had experienced would shine through. Finally, my application was approved.
I called Ms. Carter as soon as I got the good news. My voice trembled with excitement as I shared the news of my acceptance letter. Ms. Carter’s joy was palpable through the phone line; she congratulated me warmly and reminded me of how proud she was of my progress. I realized that with the right support and encouragement, I could achieve anything I set my mind to.
