B1 Listen, read and think
Mum: Well, the weather report says there is going to be a typhoon tomorrow. It says it’s going to be the worst one this year.
Yiming: Oh no! That’s terrible! What are we going to do?
Mum: Your dad has already made sure we have enough food, fresh water and batteries in case the power goes off.
Yiming: I will make sure we haven’t left anything outside.
Mum: Don’t open the door. The wind is picking up now. We’ll lock all the doors and windows.
Yiming: Oh, OK! Anyway, do you think I can go and check if Harry is OK?
Mum: You’d better not. Hm, I’m sure his family is preparing for the typhoon too. I don’t think anybody should go out tonight.
Yiming: Can I call him instead?
Mum: Yes, of course!

B2 Role-play
Yiming and Lu Yao are discussing what people should and shouldn’t do during a typhoon and the day after a typhoon.
B2 Role-play
(Answers may vary.)
During a typhoon
Yiming:What should we do during a typhoon?
Lu Yao: First, we should stay inside a safe and strong house. It’s too dangerous to go out.
Yiming:Yeah, and if our house isn’t strong enough, we should go to a shelter.
Lu Yao: Right. And we’d better stay away from low-lying areas and go to higher ground.
You know, flooding can happen really fast.
Yiming: Right. We should cancel all travel and outdoor activities to avoid any danger.
Lu Yao: Oh, and don’t forget to bring inside anything that could be blown away. We also
need to check weather reports often so we know what’s going on.
Yiming: Exactly. That helps us stay safe and be ready if anything changes.
Yiming: That’s important. Safety first!
B2 Role-play
After a typhoon
Yiming:What should we do after a typhoon?
Lu Yao: Hmm ... First, we shouldn’t drink tap water until we are sure it’s safe. The water might be dirty.
Yiming: Oh, I see. That could make us sick. What else?
Lu Yao: I think we should keep all power and electronic devices off until it’s safe. Strong winds may damage power lines.
Yiming: That makes sense. And if we go out, we should watch out for flooding — it can still happen even after the typhoon.
Lu Yao: Good point. Oh, we should also avoid sharp things to prevent bleeding. There might be broken glass on the ground.
Yiming:Yeah, that’s true.We need to watch where we step.
Lu Yao:Yes!We should also check our home to make sure it is safe to stay in.
Yiming: That’s important. Safety first!
