Passage 3 Fruits come in all kinds of colors—red apples, yellow lemons, blueberries, green melons... Why are there so many different colors for fruits? A scientist named Lu Wei from the Chinese Academy of Sciences says that fruits get their colors from special things in them called pigments(色素). For example, some fruits have red or yellow carotenoid(类胡萝卜紫) and others have blue or purple anthocyanin(花青素). How much of these pigments they have depends on the fruit’s environment. This makes the fruit turn a certain color. To study how the environment affects fruit colors, Chinese scientists looked at many fruits with different colors—white, red, blue, purple, and even black. They found three main things: First, red fruits often grow in cooler places, not just in one area but all over the world. Second, blue or purple fruits like to grow in warm places, usually in one main area. Third, fruits that grow closer to the equator(赤道) are darker in color, because the closer to the equator, the more pigments they have. Animals also have an influence on the evolution of fruit colors. Animals eat fruits and later drop the seeds(种子) in new places. This helps fruits grow in many different areas. So, some fruits develop colors that are easy for animals to notice, to get them to eat and spread the seeds. However, animals see colors differently from people. Fruits need to have colors that match how well animals can see them. For example, birds can see red better than we can, so there are more red fruits where birds live. The lemurs(狐猴) of Madagascar can’t see red and green well. That’s why most yellow fruits are in their homes—they can see yellow easily. 1. What makes fruit have different colors according to Paragraph 2? A. Pigments. B. Sunlight alone. C. Water and soil. D. Animals’ help. 2. Which shows the relationship between the distance of the fruit to the equator and its colour? (x→distance to the equator y→darkness of the colour) 3. What does the underlined word “evolution” mean in Paragraph 4? A. Environment. B. Beauty. C. Development. D. Structure. 4. Why are there many yellow fruits where lemurs live? A. Lemurs like yellow best. B. Yellow fruits taste better to lemurs. C. Lemurs need yellow to find their way. D. Lemurs can see yellow easily. 5. What’s the text mainly about? A. How can fruits help the environment? B. Why are fruits colorful? C. Where do fruits grow? D. How do fruits change colors? Passage 4 AI technology has been used in many fields and is now playing an increasingly important role in matters of public interest. A group of students at Huazhong University of Science and Technology(HUST) has developed an AI system(系统) that restores(修复) old photos of missing children. Until now, they have been providing technological support for many parents with over 1,000 restored photos and helped reunite(使重聚) 11 missing children with their families. The team was built by Sheng Jianzhong in 2020, when he was a student at Hust. He first thought to restore photos of missing children when he saw a missing child notice with an unclear photo. As he was studying digital image processing(数字图像处理), he decided to use his skills to help the parents restore their images. But the system cannot be completed by one person alone. Luckily, many students soon volunteered to join Sheng’s project. After half a year, they developed an image restoration AI system that solved the problem of unclear faces in photos. A restored image can be produced in just a few minutes. Parents can then print the high-quality images of their missing children onto T-shirts or large posters. In many cases, the team doesn’t directly connect with the families. And sometimes the families don’t even know the team has helped them. “But we still feel satisfied, and we are happy for them,” Sheng said. In the future, Sheng plans to build a better team. “It would use technology to help people who have lost their loved ones, and also encourage more young people to work for public good,” he said. 1. Who has developed an AI system that restores old photos of missing children? A. A group of missing children. B. A group of teachers at HUST. C. A group of students at HUST. D. A group of parents who lost their children. 2. What made Sheng get the idea of the project? A. A notice he saw. B. A photo of his friend. C. A missing child he knew. D. An activity in his school. 3. Why has the AI technology brought hope to many families? A. Because it saved the printing time of the photos. B. Because it provided large posters for the families. C. Because it made it more possible to find missing people. D.Because it had lots of volunteers from local universities. 4. How do the team members feel although the families don’t know who helped them? A. They feel proud and lucky. B. They feel honest and polite. C. They feel satisfied and happy. D. They feel friendly and humorous. 5. What’s the best title for the text? A. A Missing Photo Helps a Lot. B. Public Interest Matters Most. C. AI Helps Print the Clear Images. D. AI Helps Missing Children Return Home. Passage 5 ①As China’s environment gets better, the number of wild boars(野猪) across the country has grown. This has led to more problems between people and these animals. ②For example, in Shaanxi province on November 24, 2024, a wild boar entered a house, attacked(攻击), and killed an old person. In another sad event on October 27, a worker was checking a train that had been hit by a wild boar when he was killed by another train. ③There are about 2 million wild boars now living in 28 different areas in China, and 26 of these areas have reported accidents or attacks caused by boars. Why do these happen? Professor Xie Yi from Beijing Forestry University said, because of better environment, wild boars can get used to new environments easily and have lots of babies. The number of wild boars rises faster than their natural enemies like wolves. Also, wild boars often come down from the hills to search for food in spring and autumn, so people see them more often recently. Wild boars usually do not attack people unless they feel in danger. When people try to kill them, they attack people, too. ④Sun Quanhui is a scientist from the World Animal Protection Association. He said that “Wild boars are not picky eaters, and will eat anything. This makes them an important part of the ecosystem(生态系统).” They have no natural enemies, so hunting is the only way to control their number and keep it at a safer level. Last June, wild boars were not on the list of protected animals. This means people can hunt them. Some places like Shaanxi and Ningxia, have even paid hunters to kill boars. ⑤ ▲ Sun added that hunting is only a s short-term answer. He thinks that for long-term control, we need to bring back their natural enemies and make their living areas larger. This would help solve problems between humans and wildlife. 1. How does the writer mainly show the problem between wild boars and humans? A. By giving examples. B. By listing numbers. C. By asking questions. D. By offering suggestions. 2. Why are there more and more wild boars? a. They can get used to the environment easily. b. Their natural enemies are protected by law. c. They have babies very quickly. d. They often come down from the hills. A. ab B. cd C. bd D. ac 3. Which is suitable for the blank in Paragraph⑤? A. Then hunting is not needed. B. But hunting isn’t enough. C. So hunting should be stopped. D. And hunting works perfectly. 4. What does Sun Quanhui think of hunting wild boars? A. It is easy but useless. B. It is the final and best way. C. It is helpful but not enough for the future. D. It is too dangerous and should be stopped. 5. Which shows the correct structure of the passage? A. ①/②③/④⑤ B. ①/②③④/⑤ C. ①②/③④/⑤ D. ①②/③/④⑤ Passage 6 ①Do you sometimes feel too afraid to try new things? If you want to grow and get better, you need to take risks and challenge yourself. But your brain often tells you to stay safe. Instead of thinking about the good things that could happen, we worry more about “What if something goes wrong?” ②Avoiding all risks might seem smart, but it can make you feel unhappy. The problem is that we often make decisions based on feelings, not facts. We think, “The more scared I feel, the riskier it is.” But feelings aren’t always reasonable. If we knew how to think about risks clearly, we’d know which risks are worth taking. For example, trying a new hobby like painting might feel scary at first, but it could bring you joy and new skills. ③Whether you’re afraid to change your job or too nervous to ask a friend for coffee, learning to take “good risks” can improve your life. Here are good ways to help. ④Balance feelings with facts. Many times, we think fear means something risky. But that’s not true. For example, driving a car feels safe because we do it every day, but giving a speech in public might make your heart beat fast. Yet the fact shows that car accidents are much more common than getting hurt while speaking! So before you avoid doing something scary, take three deep breaths and ask yourself, “What’s the real risk here?” ⑤Take steps to succeed. You can do many smal1 things to lower risks. It’s okay to feel butterflies in your stomach when you try something new. Facing fear helps build your mental muscle, just like exercising builds physical muscle. So, taking smart risks helps you become mentally stronger. Each time you try something scary, you will learn to deal with uncertainty and anxiety. You’ll also get new skills and grow from mistakes. 1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first two paragraphs? A. Avoiding risks is a smart way to stay happy. B. Taking risks requires us to trust our feelings. C. Our brain often tells us to face challenges bravely. D. Our feelings often influence us to make decisions. 2. What does the underlined phrase “build your mental muscle” mean in the last paragraph? A. Develop strength in your mind. B. Exercise your body to stay healthy. C. Think mainly about cheerful things. D. Avoid situations that make you afraid. 3. What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1,②=Paragraph 2..) B 4. What can we infer from the passage about people who avoid all risks? A. They usually make decisions based on facts rather than feelings. B. They may miss the chance to gain happiness and new skills. C. They are more likely to have strong mental strength. D. They often take small steps to deal with uncertainty. 5. What is the main idea of the passage? A. Taking smart risks can push us forward. B. Trying many small things can reduce risks. C. Learning clearly about real risks can help a lot. D. Practicing more can help deal with risks better. Passage 7 ①“And here, I found that the warmth goes both ways. The more I give, the more I will get. That’s the real power of volunteer teaching,” Wang said. Wang Xue is a 22-year-old student from a university in Beijing. Now she works as a volunteer Chinese teacher at a high school in Yunnan Province. ②At first, Wang was worried about her teaching methods because her students didn’t do well in class. However, Wang didn’t give up when she faced the challenges. She tried new ways like encouraging students through praise and making them work in groups. Eight months later, their hard work paid off and they made great progress. ③In addition to daily teaching, Wang often organized after-school activities to support the students’ all-around development. One of her proudest projects was guiding her students to create poems—a creative mix of Yunnan’s literature and art. Through the project, the students felt the beauty of the subject, and started seeing the world differently. ④Wang also helped students with difficulties in their life. A girl student called Zhou Li recently fell ill. Wang visited her in the hospital and learned about her family’s life—her father died and her mother now supports two daughters alone by keeping a small shop. Since then she has been with Zhou Li and encouraged her whenever possible. ⑤After her one-year volunteer work, Wang will soon begin graduate studies in international Chinese language education. She hopes to teach Chinese and spread Chinese culture overseas after graduation. 1. How does the writer start the text? A. By telling a funny story about Wang Xue. B. By showing Wang Xue’s words. C. By introducing Wang Xue’s great teacher. D. By saying something about Wang Xue’s father. 2. What did Wang Xue do during her volunteer work? ①spread Chinese culture ②organize after-school activities ③teach international Chinese language ④help students with difficulties ⑤try new teaching methods A. ②④⑤ B. ①②③ C. ③④⑤ D. ③③④ 3. A Girl Student and Her Chinese Teacher D. A Great Volunteer Teacher’s Story Passage 8 Let’s say you are taking a walk along the road and you happen to see one or two waste bottles lying on the grass beside the road. What would you do? You may have different choices. Firstly, you can leave the bottles there as they are. It wasn’t you who threw them away. Why should you do something about it? This is quite OK. Secondly, you can pick them up and throw them into a dustbin(垃圾箱). By doing this, you have walked a step further to help make our home clean. This action is a better choice. Thirdly, you might want to pick them up and give them to an old man or woman who collects waste for a living. If this is your choice, you have walked even further. You’re not only thinking about doing something for the environment, you’re also developing yourself to be a person who would think of others and help them. As for young kids, they may always have such a question: “When do I grow up?” When does a child grow up? And how can a kid know he or she has grown up? These are interesting questions. As for us, 15-year-olds, who are finishing middle school, we’re no longer younger children. We should know whether or not we have grown up. When we start to have a sense of offering a helping hand for a cleaner and greener world, and when we have a loving heart to think more of others than of ourselves and are ready to help them, we can say that we have grown up. Remember: If we help others, others will help us. If we do our best for nature, nature will offer its best to us in return! 1. What does the writer do at the beginning? A. He does a survey. B. He tells a funny story. C. He makes up a situation. D. He shows a piece of advice. 2. What does the underlined word “home” refer to(指的是)? A. House B. Earth. C. Country. D. Family. 3. You must throw the bottles into a dustbin. 4. What means that we have grown up? A. We stop asking others for help. B. We start to ask many questions. C. We are finishing middle school. D. We start to care for others and nature. 5. What does the writer want us to do by the text? A. Make our own decision. B. Thank the nature for its offer. C. Learn to depend on ourselves D. Make a cleaner and warmer world. Passage 9 For months, the world has been excited about a new AI model, DeepSeek-R1. It was developed by DeepSeek, a Chinese business based in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The new AI came out on Jan 20, 2025. In just one week, it beat OpenAI’s ChatGPT and became the top free app in Apple’s App Store, reported Xinhua. Its developer said that DeepSeek-R1 is as good at difficult tasks as other big models but needs less computing power(算力). It’s also the cheapest of its kind and took only about 5.57 million US dollars (40.58 million yuan) to develop. That is way less than the hundreds of millions or even billions that US businesses have had to spend on building similar AI models, Marc Andreessen, a technology expert in the US, told Xinhua. DeepSeek-R1’s success largely came from its special training method. Traditionally, AI is trained in two ways. One is Chain-of-Thought(CoT, 思维链), where AI learns to break problems into smaller, simpler steps. The other is Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT, 监督微调), which works by showing AI lots of practice problems along with the right answers for it to find a pattern. DeepSeek-R1, however, used Reinforcement Learning(RL,强化学习) as the core method, Xinhua reported. In RL, AI learns by trying different things. It gets rewards for correct actions and gets punished for mistakes. For example, in a game, it gets points for picking up rubbish and loses points for breaking a glass. Over time, it finds out the right way all by itself. This is how DeepSeek-Rl has grown to be a reasoning model, which is a new type of AI, noted Microsoft engineer Vinayak Hegde. Common AI models, like GPT-4o, usually just give direct answers or the best solutions. But reasoning models are trained to both think and show the process. 1. What does the underlined word “pattern” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Fact. B. Rule. C. Chance. D. Letter. 2. What is one of the strong points of DeepSeek-R1 compared to other AI models? A. It’s cheaper to develop. B. It’s smarter than others. C. It’s better at difficult activities. D. It’s quicker at solving problems. 3. How does DeepSeek-R1 learn? A. By breaking problems into smaller steps. B. By finding the right patterns in practice problems. C. By finding the right way to do things independently. D. By following all kinds of orders from its creators. 4. How can the reasoning model be described? A. It gives direct answers. B. It provides a lot of reasons C. It gives the best solution. D. It thinks and then decides. 5. What is the passage mainly about? A. The application of DeepSeek-R1. B. The challenges faced by DeepSeek-R1. C. The differences between AI models. D. The introduction to DeepSeek-R1. Passage 10 Do you know how dolphins communicate with each other? They can’t talk like humans, but they have their own ways of “speaking”. The two main methods that dolphins use to communicate are clicking and whistling(吹口哨) , which can be heard up to 12.4 miles away through the ocean. Different kinds of whistling noises are made to communicate with other dolphins. And clicking is used for looking for directions. It is a method of sending sound waves into the water in order to hunt for food. The sound waves touch nearby things and return to the dolphin’s head. Its brain then turns the returning sound waves into the shapes and distances of things in the water. Scientists are trying to work out more about the meanings behind special whistle and click forms, as this would enable humans to listen to and understand the dolphin’s language and world much more easily. However, it’s thought that dolphins communicate in a very different manner from humans, and their speech shouldn’t be translated into human language. Dolphins’ whistles, which they use as names to tell themselves from others and share personal information, have long been known as one of the most complex forms of animal communication ever studied. These calls can differ between different dolphins and situations. Studies have shown that when a dolphin appears to be in trouble, it will produce a loud whistle so that those in its group can help him. When one dolphin whistles, another dolphin usually answers by making a similar sound, or sometimes by swimming closer to the dolphin that makes the sound. It’s also quite common for a mother and her baby to keep whistling when they become separated until they find each other again. 1. What can we know from paragraph 1? A. Dolphins can talk with humans by making special sounds. B. Clicking and whistling are the two main ways dolphins communicate. C. Dolphins’ clicking and whistling can only be heard within 12.4 miles. D. Dolphins prefer to make clicking sounds rather than whistling sounds 2. What is clicking used for? A. Making friends. B. Asking for help. C. Warning of dangers. D. Looking for directions. 3. Which of the following in the dictionary best explains the underlined word “complex”? complex [ˈkɒmpleks] adj. ①Something that is easy to break. ②Something that is necessary to have. ③Something that is hard to understand. ④Something that is fun to experience. A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 4. Which of the following questions is answered in the passage? A. What do the dolphins do in a dangerous situation? B. Why are the dolphins used to swimming together? C. Where did the scientists finish the research? D. What makes dolphins’ clicking sounds travel farther? 5. What is the best title for the text? A. Hunting Ways of Dolphins B. Secret Communication of Dolphins C. The Importance of Protecting Dolphins D.
