Passage 1
Have you ever seen drones(无人机) in the sky? What can they be used for? Can they only be used for taking fantastic photos? Can a small group of drones make railways safe, and at the same time, help railway companies save money? That is the very likely future of applying today’s “eyes in the sky” technology to make sure that railways are safe for trains.
Drones are already being used to check power lines. They could do exactly the same thing to check railway lines and other important things such as the correct position of the railway and turning points. The more regularly they can be checked, the more railway safety, reliability(可靠性) and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient(有效的) across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway workers’ safety. It is said that European railways alone spend around 20 billion euros a year on maintenance for sending maintenance workers, often at night, to check and repair the railway. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with the help of drones.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, exploring mistakes in the railway before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones don’t need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new idea. Very small drones with AI will travel ahead of the train and guide it without drivers. With their ability to see ahead, they could find any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react (反应) in time.
1. How does the writer introduce the first paragraph?
A. By telling a story. B. By listing numbers.
C. By comparing facts. D. By asking questions.
2. Why can drones be used in railways?
A. Because it’s safer to use drones. B. Because drones can check power lines.
C. Because it’s cheaper to use drones. D. Because drones can do operations.
3. What does the underlined word “maintenance” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Check and repair. B. Buying drones. C. Railway safety. D. Workers’ safety.
4. What can drones in the future do?
A. Let trains run faster. B. Help make more money.
C. Provide early warnings. D. Make trains run by themselves.
5. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Railways in the future. B. The super drones.
C. Drones’ effect on railways. D. Drones in the future.

Passage 2
Your Schoolbag Is Getting Smarter!
Do you want a schoolbag that does more than carry books? Smart schoolbags are here, with new features (特点) to make school life easier, healthier, and greener!
❖A Handy Reminder for Your Day
The smart schoolbag has a small screen on the front. It shows your daily schedule with clear icons: a paintbrush for art class, a basketball for P.E., and a book for reading time. “Last week, it reminded me to bring my math workbook,” says Zhang Wei from Nanjing. “I used to forget things, but not anymore!” The screen also shows messages from teachers, like “Hand in your report today!”.
❖Keep Healthy with Your Bag
On the side of the bag, there’s a temperature checker in the water bottle pocket. In winter, if your water is too cold, the pocket turns orange to warn you. The bag also cares about your body. If you sit for over 30 minutes, it gently shakes and says, “Time to stand up and move!” Some bags even have a special pocket for masks, helping you stay safe.
❖Never Lose Things Again!
Tired of losing your pencil case or lunch box? Smart schoolbags come with tiny trackers (跟踪器). If something is missing, tap the bag’s screen—the tracker will make a loud beep. “I found my lost lunch box under the desk in seconds!” says Li Yutong, a 14-year-old user. No more searching everywhere!
❖Friendly to the Environment
These bags are good for the planet, too! The bag is made from recycled plastic bottles, and the strap (带子) has a solar panel (太阳能板). Just 20 minutes in the sun charges (充电) the screen for a whole day—no need for electricity. It’s a small way to help reduce waste.
Teachers say smart bags are useful, but students should still learn to plan on their own. “Technology helps us, but our own skills are the most important,” says Mr. Wang.
Smart schoolbags are more than bags—they’re like helpful friends for every student. Would you like to own one?
1. How does the writer lead into the topic?
A. By telling a story. B. By asking a question.
C. By giving an example. D. By describing a scene.
2. What is the main advantage of the solar panel on the strap?
A. It helps track lost objects faster.
B. It lights up the screen in the dark.
C. It keeps the masks in the pocket clean.
D. It charges the bag without using electricity.
3. What does Mr. Wang probably agree with?
A. Smart bags are unnecessary for school life.
B. Technology is more important than skills.
C. Students should simply depend on smart schoolbags.
D. Technology can’t take the place of students’ own abilities.
4. Why does the writer write this passage?

Passage 1
Next time, if you want to say sweet words to your friends, you’d better speak in their left ear. Scientists from Switzerland recently found the direction (方向) from which you hear sounds can influence how much you like them.
13 people were invited to the study. They listened to different sounds from three directions: the front, left and right. During the study, their brains were scanned (扫描) at the same time.
The results show when they hear positive sounds, such as laughter from the left cause the strongest brain activity. All areas in the brain related to (与……有关) hearing are active. This means people may be happier when “good” sounds go in their left ear. But this didn’t happen when negative sounds, such as scared screams (尖叫), came from the left. Also, the brain isn’t usually as active when hearing sounds from the front or right.
However, scientists still don’t know the reason for this. In the future, scientists want to learn more about this, and also see if other body parts have such differences, such as the left and right hand.
Humans have a special way of reacting to sounds as early studies pointed out. For example, people are more alert (警觉的) when they hear sounds from the back. Also, sounds that travel toward a person may cause more fear than those traveling away. These can be explained by evolution (进化). In the past when humans lived in the wild, sounds that were getting closer or from the back were usually very dangerous.
1. Which will be better heard in the left ear, sweet words or scared screams?
________________________
2. How do scientists find the result in the study?
________________________
3. Why do people feel more alert when they hear sounds from the back?
________________________
4. If somebody helps you, what will you say or do to him or her? Why? (Write more than 30 words)
________________________
【答案】
1. Sweet words.
2. They invited 13 people to listen to different sounds from three directions and scanned their brains at the same time.
3. Because in the past when humans lived in the wild, sounds from the back were usually very dangerous.
4. If somebody helps me, I will say “Thank you” sincerely to him or her. And I will also try my best to help him or her when he or she is in trouble. Because showing gratitude is a good way to maintain good relationships, and helping each other can make the world a better place.(开放性试题,答案不唯一,言之有理即可)
Passage 2
A new mobile app called Farm Assistant, developed by Wu Zeyin, makes farm work easier in Botswana. Wu is a 12-year-old student in Botswana in Africa. He moved there from Hubei with his family eight years ago.
In Botswana, the desert climate is very common in most parts. “During the past years living in the country, I found there weren’t many kinds of fruits and vegetables sold at local supermarkets, and the quality was poor,” he said. The low production of the crops (庄稼) has much to do with the climate. For a long time, Botswana had to buy many fruits and vegetables from neighboring countries to meet the needs of its people.
In July, 2022, there was a pilot project to grow the water-saving and drought-tolerant (耐旱的) rice from China in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana, which brought Wu some new ideas. When he got the news, he decided to develop an app for the local farmers. The app supports several crops commonly grown locally, including tomatoes, potatoes, onions, corn, carrots and cabbages. Farmers who use the app can click (点击) on the crop picture to see its seed (种子) price, watering needs, production and selling price. After planting the seeds, farmers click the timer to start, and the app reminds them what they should do in each period.
Wu said there is an old saying in China, “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day, but if you teach him to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.”

Passage 3
Fudan University in Shanghai has a new rule about using AI for writing college papers. The rule says students cannot use AI for six things, including translating their writing. Breaking this rule may cost students their college degree.
The new rule has caused heated discussions online, as it is believed to be the world’s strictest. Supporters think Fudan is doing the right thing. With the rise of generative AI (生成式人工智能) like ChatGPT, 86 percent of students worldwide had used AI for schoolwork by July, according to global research company Statista. Some even let AI do all the work, which can be dangerous, especially in jobs like nursing and firefighting, noted Forbes.
The difficulty in catching Al-generated schoolwork adds to the problem. A US study in March found that only 37 percent of teachers have proper training in using Al detection (检测) programs. The detection programs also have trouble keeping up with fast-developing generative AI, which now creates less predictable content (可预测的内容) , explained Australian expert Leon Furze on his website. As a result, the detection programs do not always work well. Teachers cannot fully trust them, as one mistake by the program can seriously influence a student, noted Education Week.
Even so, some experts think Fudan is being too strict. “Stopping the use of Al for touch-up (润色) or translation does not improve creativity, but may cause students to spend too much time on their language.” Professor Guo Yingjian from Renmin University of China told China Science Daily. He suggested that Fudan should learn from the experiences of Harvard and Cambridge by teaching students to use AI correctly and requiring them to tell when they have used it.
1. What are students at Fudan University not allowed to do with AI?
According to the passage, they’re not allowed ________________________.
2. What is the result if students in Fudan break the new rule?
They won’t ________________________________.
3. What does the underlined word “them” refer to in Paragraph 3?
It refers to ________________________________.
4. How many universities are mentioned in the passage?
________________________________.
5. How should students use Al, according to Professor Guo Yingjian?
He suggested that students ________________________________.
【答案】

【答案】范文:
Last Thursday, our school held a special event called “Tradition Meets Technology” to help us experience the charm of combining traditional culture with modern technology.
The event had many amazing activities. First, we put on VR headsets to “visit” the Terracotta Warriors. The 3D technology made the ancient soldiers look so real that we felt like we were traveling back to the Qin Dynasty. Next, a local paper-cutting master taught us to make traditional window flowers through a live stream. Students in the hall and online viewers both followed her steps, and we shared our works on social media. The most interesting part was the AI poetry station.
