①Horses are intelligent animals that often form close connections with humans. For example, police horses are trained to stay calm in noisy crowds and follow difficult instructions from their riders. A recent study from Nottingham Trent University in the UK shows that horses are smart enough to plan ahead, especially when treats are involved.
②The study used a game with 20 horses. At first, the horses got a treat every time they touched a card with their nose. Then, researchers used a light to signal “stop”. The horses were only rewarded if they touched the card when the light was off.
③At first, the horses still touched the card. But then, researchers added a punishment: if a horse touched the card while the “stop” light was on, it had a 10-second “timeout” and could not play or get a treat. After this, the horses changed their behavior right away. They started touching the card only at the right time.
④Louise Evans, who led the study, said the timeout punishment showed the horses understood the game rules. “That was enough for the horses to go ‘OK, let’s just play by the rules,’” she explained.
⑤Researchers say the study shows horses have a higher level of reasoning than people thought. Instead of not understanding the rules, the horses chose not to follow them at first—until they realized following the rules would help them get treats sooner.
⑥Evans said, “Our study shows that they do know the results of their actions.” This means horses are clever enough to think about the future and make plans to reach their goals. The researchers hope their findings will improve care for horses and encourage good ways of training them.
4.What did the horses get at the beginning of the game?
A.A new card to play with. B.A treat for touching the card.
C.A light to guide them. D.A timeout for wrong actions.
5.What change happened after the punishment was added?
A.The horses stopped playing the game. B.The horses touched the card only when the light was off.
C.The horses waited for the light to turn on. D.The horses got more treats than before.
6.What is the structure of the text?
A.① ②/③/④⑤⑥ B.①②/③④/⑤⑥ C.① /②③④/⑤⑥ D.①②③/④⑤/⑥
7.What is the best title for the passage?
A.How to Train Clever Horses B.A Special Game for Horses
C.Horses: Animals That Can Plan Ahead D.The Link Between Horses and Humans

A medical breakthrough in China is giving new hope to people with spinal cord injuries (脊髓损伤). Scientists have created a brain-spinal chip (芯片) that allows paralyzed (瘫痪的) patients to move their legs, and even walk again.
The chip, only 1mm wide, is designed to be fitted into the brain and spinal cord. If the natural communication between the brain and muscles (肌肉) is lost, this chip becomes the bridge. When the chips work, they create a direct connection between the brain and muscles.
The results have been amazing. A 34-year-old man, paralyzed after a fall, could move his legs just one day after the operation on January 8, 2025. Two weeks later, he walked five meters with help. Three other patients had similar operations in February and March, all getting better within weeks. Even though the patients’ nervous systems were damaged (受损), the chips helped them walk again. This marks a big step in China’s progress in medical science and it brings hope for over 3.7 million people in China.
“This is just the beginning,” Jia, the lead researcher, says. “With the technology, these people may one day leave wheelchairs behind after 3 to 5 years of training.”
Behind this achievement is a long journey of careful research and bold thinking. It took the researchers over 10 years to develop the chip. They tested it on animals first, and then on people. They faced many challenges, yet they never gave up. Step by step, they developed a system to reconnect the mind and body in ways once appearing only in science fiction.
As the chip continues to improve, it lights a new path forward—one built on science, shaped by care, and aimed toward a brighter future.
8.What do we know about the chips mentioned in the passage?
A.They are only as wide as 2 mm. B.They are fitted into the man’s arms.

Several schools are trying to stop students using slang (俚语). But is it worth?
The Harris Academy in Upper Norwood (London) is one school that’s taking action. Students there aren’t allowed to use words such as coz (because), ain’t (isn’t/ aren’t, etc.) and yeah (yes) when they’re speaking. A letter has been sent to parents explaining the decision, according to an article in the Daily Mail.
But why? “The big problem is that many of these words are appearing in written work,” explained Mr. Hank, an English teacher. “This puts many children at a disadvantage... We do want them to be able to communicate properly with people and be understood. We are going to teach them the rules. If they decide not to use these rules with friends, that is fine. But I want them to know that when writing and speaking in a formal (正式的) situation, they should use Standard English.”
So, what’s causing the problem? Firstly, slang is just about everywhere these days: in TV soaps, reality shows, songs and films. Secondly, with more and more people using it in conversations with friends and workmates, it’s becoming more acceptable. Also, the increase in the use of mobile phones and social networking sites is having an influence — while texting, people often use abbreviations or phonetic forms of words, such as wot (what), dat (that), dis (this), n (and), w (with), gonna (going to) and wanna (want to).
However, many people think that the effort to control languages doesn’t make sense. “The very nature of English is its flexibility (灵活性)”, said a Jamaican poet in a recent interview. “You can’t control the type of language that people use,” he added. “The reason why English is such a popular language is because it develops well to fit the way it is being used,” a language expert explained.
Is the “war” on slang worth fighting?
12.How does the writer show that slang is not allowed in some schools?
A.By telling a story. B.By giving an example.
C.By using a saying. D.By describing a picture.
13.How many reasons for people’s using slang are mentioned?
A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
14.What can we infer from the Jamaican poet’s words in Paragraph 5?
A.Any language has its own rules. B.English is the most popular language.
C.It’s acceptable for people to use slang. D.The effort to control slang is really meaningful.
15.Which is the best title for this passage?
A.Slang matters, doesn’t it? B.Slang or not slang at school?
C.How to teach slang at school? D.Is slang learning necessary at school?

I travel and fly quite often. Whether it is for personal reasons or for work, I find myself on an airplane almost every month.
First, before you get on the airplane, DO wait until your flight is called to board(登机). DON’T crowd around the area by the door.
Second, when you’re on the plane, please DO put your bag at a proper place—the overhead space above your seat. DON’T place it in an overhead space above an empty seat. I get to my seat and the overhead spaces above my seat on either side are already filled with bags. So I have to put my bag in the space that is far from my seat.
Third, DO keep your voice down. If you want to talk to your travel mates, please DON’T speak loudly. Once, I was asleep. All of a sudden, someone laughed out loud and I was woken up. It was not fun.
Fourth, if you have to use an airplane bathroom, please DO clean up after yourself. Please DON’T think it is the duty of the workers on the plane to clean up your mess.

I write the 42 (日期) when I must finish something and check if I do everything before that day.

I often record my time. You can start by 43 (保持) a simple record of how you spend your time for one or two weeks. You might be surprised to see where it all goes. Knowing this helps you get into a good habit: 44 (无论什么时候) you have some free time, you should use it well!

We all have the 45 (相同) 24 hours—the key is using them well. For example, my friend Tony always sits down and 46 (列出) what’s truly important to him, such as school, family, or hobbies. Ask yourself: If I had only several days left, how would I spend my time? This will help you make better decisions in the future.

Learning languages has many advantages, such as feeling confident when travelling abroad, making friends 51 (international), being able to read books in the original (原版的), and a lot more, like studying and working in other 52 (country). Most people live under the stereotype (刻板印象) that they lose 53 (they) learning abilities with age. Before 55 (decide) how to learn a new language, the first thing is to decide in which situation the language is to be used.
If the target is, for example, 56 (travel) or find new business at some international events, a course focusing 57 speaking practice is recommended. The basic vocabulary and conversational structures (结构), studied and practised heavily during a short period of time, may lead to the needed result, which might be the ability to communicate on the streets or support 58 small business talk. Usually, the two or three months of study are enough to start communicating. However, if brought back shortly to the usual environment, the person might lose the majority of knowledge if there would not be any supporting practice afterwards. Unfortunately, without practical usage 59 further development, the language abilities may go away as easily as they came. The language cannot 60 (learn) once and forever.
