At the age of 17 years 64 days, Mack Rutherford has become the youngest person to fly around the world alone! Mack’s journey around the world lasted five months and he flew across 52 countries in total. His record-breaking flight began in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on 23 March, 2022. He was 16 years old when he took off and celebrated his 17th birthday by himself in his plane.
Mack faced many challenges during his adventure. Because of his small-sized aircraft, he had to land whenever the weather got too rough. However, at some points he literally (确实地) couldn’t land, such as when flying non-stop for 10 hours over an ocean. At other points, he faced extremely hot weather, such as in Dubai. In Sudan, a country in Africa, Mack also faced sandstorms which made it hard for him to see where he was going. Mack battled strong winds and pouring rain during his flight, but he never stopped smiling, joking and updating his flowers on his social media account along the way, and managed to expertly pilot his plane to safety.
And if Mack’s surname “Rutherford” sounds familiar, it’s because his elder sister Zara also flew around the world earlier this year, and still holds the female version of the record! The Rutherford siblings (兄弟姐妹) were inspired by their parents to become pilots. “I have known for certain I wanted to fly since I was eleven,” Mack said, “My dad Sam is a professional ferry pilot, my mum Beatrice is a recreational private pilot.”
Mack hopes to inspire young people to begin working towards their own goals, “No matter what background you have, I believe it is never too early to work towards your dreams and you shouldn’t limit yourself by others’ expectations.” With both feet firmly back on the ground now, it’s time for Mack to turn his attention towards catching up on his schoolwork!
24. What can we know about Mack’s flight?
A. It began when he was 17 years 64 days old.
B. It made him the youngest person to fly alone.
C. It was a successful record-breaking attempt.
D. It took off in the capital of his home country.
25. What challenges did Mack face?
A. Limitation of flight hours. B. Darkness and safety issues.
C. Loneliness of flying alone. D. Bad weather and long distance
26. Why did Mack and his sister want to be pilots?
A. To model themselves on their parents. B. To encourage each other to dream big.
C. To serve as examples for their siblings. D. To live up to their parents’ expectations.
27. What does Mack hope to do with his attempt?
A. To warn young people of the dangers of flying.
B. To encourage young people to become pilots.
C. To free young people of worries about schoolwork.
D. To inspire young people to fight for their dreams.

Bowhead whales can live 200 years or longer. How they do it is no longer among the secrets of the deep. Scientists have mapped the genetic code of this long lived whale species. The international effort found unusual features in the Arctic whale’s genes. Those features likely protect the species against cancer and other problems related to old age. The researchers hope their findings will one day translate into ways to help people too.
“We hope to learn what is the secret of bowhead whales living longer, healthier lives,” says Joao Pedru de Magalhes. He is a gerontologist at the University of Liverpool in England. (Gerontology is the scientific study of old age.) He is also a co-author of the study that appeared in Cell Reports. His team hopes, he says, that its new findings might one day be used to improve human health and preserve human life.
No other mammals are known to live as long as the bowhead whales. Scientists have shown that some of these whales have lived well beyond 100 — including one that survived to 216. For perspective, if he were still alive, Abraham Lincoln would be turning just 211 this year.
Dr. Magalhäes’ team wanted to understand how the bowhead can live so long. To find out this, the experts analyzed the animal’s complete set of genes, called its genome. Those instructions are coded in the animal’s DNA. The team also compared the whale’s genome to that of people, mice and cows.
The scientists discovered differences, including mutations, in the whale’s genes. Those changes are linked to cancer, aging and cell growth. The results suggest that the whales are better than humans at repairing their DNA. That’s important because flawed DNA can lead to disease, including some cancers.
Bowhead whales are also better at keeping abnormally dividing cells in check. Together, the changes appear to allow bowhead whales to live longer without developing age related diseases such as cancer, said Magalhäes.
28. What does the example of Lincoln in paragraph 3 indicate?
A. Lincoln should have lived much longer.
B. The lifetime of bowhead whales is very long.
C. Lincoln died one hundred years ago.
D. Their study unlocked the secret of Lincoln’s death.
29. What contributes to the long life of the bowhead whale according to the study?
A. It faces little danger in its life.
B. Its DNA has a strong ability of self-repairing.
C. It has a complete set of genetic instructions.
D. Its living environment is better than that of humans.
30. What does the underlined word “flawed” in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. Changed. B. Misled. C. Damaged. D. Repaired.
31. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Bowhead whales may unlock the secrets of a long, healthy life.
B. The bowhead is the animal which lives the longest.
C. Scientists have found new long-living DNAs in bowhead whales.
D. Scientists have found ways to treat humans’ disease.

It is sometimes jokingly said that you may skip a meal a day without any bad effect but skip using your WeChat for an hour and you will feel distinctly unwell. It is an acknowledgement of the fact that the app is no longer only a fun tool but an essential part of life for millions.
Launched in January 2011, this messaging, social media and mobile payment app today has more than 1 billion individual users. People use it for everything, from applying for a business license to booking a hospital appointment to keeping up with family and friends, shopping and paying bills — activities that are part and parcel of our everyday life.
When it was first introduced, WeChat was only an app supporting voice, video, picture and text messages between two persons or among a group. But today it has become ubiquitous.
In the past, people carried their wallet and keys with them wherever they went; today, a smart phone with WeChat installed is all they need in daily life. Its functions like Moments and mini programs and the official WeChat accounts of government agencies and companies have made communication and public services accessible and convenient like never before.
WeChat is also widely used by enterprises (公司). Figures from Tencent show there are around 15 million WeChat official accounts, which enjoy 5 billion followers. Most businesses use their WeChat groups as a standard marketing kit. This has greatly reduced advertising, marketing and communication costs.
However, there are concerns about the downsides of WeChat, such as addiction among primary school children. Equally serious is the misuse of WeChat for cheating or other crimes. However, it has to be kept in mind that these fallouts are not really the fault of WeChat, but due to the misuse of the app.
If we learn to temper our use of messaging apps with prudence (谨慎) and pragmatism (实用主义), we could be looking forward to yet new conveniences and experience in this decade with the rapid development of 5G technology and artificial intelligence. Ultimately, the choice is ours, whether to use WeChat or any other new invention, wisely or wantonly (不受约束地).
32. What can we conclude from the first paragraph?
A. We can easily skip a meal a day. B. We will be ill by not using WeChat.
C. WeChat used to be meant for fun. D. WeChat has become inseparable in daily life.
33. The underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 3 probably has the same meaning as ______.
A. wherever B. nowhere C. somewhere D. everywhere
34. For what reason do the government agencies choose to use WeChat?
A. WeChat has a mobile payment function.
B. They can improve their service through WeChat.
C. Mini programs are convenient for the agencies.
D. People do not have to carry keys and cash with them.
35. What is to be remembered when we look at the downsides of WeChat?
A. WeChat should be held responsibly.
B. WeChat should be banned among primary school children.
C. The improper use of the app leads to many problems.
D. The 5G technology will bring new conveniences and experience.
第二节 七选五阅读(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Life doesn’t always seem fair. Some people are just born with the ability to attract anyone they meet easily. Well, it might seem like a magical power, but actually there are various factors at work. 36 The answer is: to a large extent, yes you can.
But first, the bad news. People initially judge each other based purely on physical appearance. With just a glimpse of a face, people make snap judgments about each other’s likeability, trustworthiness and confidence. How should we deal with this? 37 People perceive a smiling face as more trustworthy, warmer and sociable. It sounds like common sense, doesn’t it? Smile and others will smile with you.
What other tricks might we have? 38 Consequently, three things we can do to signal that we are not a threat: raise our eyebrows quickly, tilt (仰起) our heads slightly, and once again, to smile.
So we’ve looked at body language, but of course what you say is hugely important too, unless you want to just stand there grinning foolishly. The golden rule of friendship is if you make people feel good about themselves, they’re going to like you. In other words, you should not talk about yourself and all your wonderful achievements. 39
Finally, finding common ground is good to form a connection. Charming people are very skilled at seeking out shared interests or experiences to bond with others. Simple things like asking where someone’s from really can open up a discussion and allow you to find areas in common. And if all else fails, you can fall back on that most British of topics: the weather. 40
A. It can break the ice.
B. What effective strategies can we employ to become charming?
C. There’s one incredibly basic tool: your smile.
D. Alternatively, you need to display interest in them.
E. So, can you develop exceptional charm?
F. Mutual interests are the foundation for building connections with others.
G. Our brains frequently scan the surroundings for signs of friend or enemy.

A man came home from work late, tired and irritated (不耐烦的), to find his 6-year-old son waiting for him at the door.
“Daddy, may I ask you a question?”
“Yeah sure, what is it?” replied the man.
“Daddy, how much do you make an hour?”
“That’s none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?” the man said angrily.
“I just want to know. Please tell me. How much do you make an hour?” pleaded the little boy.
“If you must know, I make $ 20 an hour.”
“Oh,” the little boy replied, with his head down. Looking up, he said, “Daddy, may I please borrow $ 10?”
The father was angry, “If the only reason you asked that is that you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I work hard every day for such childish behavior.” The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door. The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy’s questions. “How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?” he thought to himself. After about an hour or so, the man calmed down, and started to think: Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $ 10 and he really didn’t ask for money very often. The man went to the door of the little boy’s room and opened the door. “Are you asleep, son?” he asked.
“No, daddy, I’m awake,” replied the boy.
“I’ve been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier,” said the man. “It has been a long day and I took out my anger on you. Here’s the $ 10 you asked for.”
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. “Oh. Thank you, daddy!” he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled (皱巴巴的) bills.

M: Most likely. The fish in the colder water are not as orange as the fish in the warmer water.
W: I agree. I know it’s hard to keep the water exactly the right temperature in this lab, but you can see the difference in the fish.
M: Yeah, we’ve had some differences in the water temperature, especially at night.
W: I think we should write our lab report as soon as possible.
M: I’m afraid I don’t agree. Maybe we’ll get clearer results if we give the experiment more time.

W: Well, we certainly have a busy day ahead of us, so let’s get started, shall we? Let’s have a look at the map of the museum now.
The door on the right of the entrance hall leads into the gift shop and ticket center. Once we pick up our entrance tickets, I’d ask everyone to put their bags and coats in the storage area.
Now, once you come back into the entrance hall, the door on the opposite side to the gift shop leads into the art gallery. There is a special exhibition there at the moment. If you continue on up the entrance hallway that leads into the main exhibition center, on the back left-hand side, there are some toilets. Beside the toilets, you’ll find the 3D theater. I strongly recommend that you make time for the 30-minute presentation in the theater.
Running along the right-hand side of the main exhibition center is the Modern Art Studio. Here, not only can you view some of the most famous works of the 20th century, but you can also attend a workshop run by a local artist. OK, that’s the art museum.
