Besides, looking after a plant will give you something more to do and care about. Let’s look at the four best houseplants you can grow. Australian Pine A perfect “living decoration” to add in your house, it is good to look at and has a comforting feel. It can also serve as the perfect Christmas tree. It grows around 10 feet tall indoors. Remember that it requires plenty of light and fresh air. Otherwise, it becomes weak and an easy target for mites (螨虫). Dracaena The green and yellow pattern on its leaves looks great. It can grow to be around 10 feet tall. Just make sure you keep the soil surface dry between your watering periods because it gets influenced by too much water. Also, having this plant around a dog can be dangerous. It can be poisonous to dogs if they eat it. Grape Ivy If you want something off the ceiling (天花板), this houseplant is the one for you. It’s a climbing plant, and it will make for a beautiful hanging basket decoration. The plant is full of life wherever it is hung. It needs to be kept wet in all its parts for good growth. Peperomia It is little in size, with long leaves. It adds energy to your living room and creates a comforting environment. As it’s not a very tall plant, you needn’t worry about how much space it will take up. The plant likes a dry surface of the soil. So what are you waiting for? Choose the one that attracts you most, and give your home a wonderful addition. 1. Which of the following can serve as a Christmas tree? A. Grape ivy. B. Dracaena. C. Australian pine. D. Peperomia. 2. When keeping Dracaena as a houseplant, you should ________. A. be careful with mites B. keep dogs away from it C. hang it from the ceiling D. leave the surface of the soil wet 3. In which section of a website can you most likely find the passage? A. Business. B. Life. C. Travel. D. Politics. B Do you ever get to the train station and realize you forgot to bring something to read? Yes, we all have our phones, but many of us still like to go old school and read something printed. Well, there’s a kiosk (小亭) for that. In the San Francisco Bay Area, at least. “You enter the fare gates (检票口) and you’ll see a kiosk that is lit up and it tells you can get a one-minute, a three-minute, or a five-minute story,” says Alicia Trost, the chief communications officer for the San Francisco Bay Area Rapid Transit — known as BART. “You choose which length you want and it gives you a receipt-like short story.” It’s that simple. Riders have printed nearly 20,000 short stories and poems since the program was launched last March. Some are classic short stories, and some are new original works. Trost also wants to introduce local writers to local riders. “We wanted to do something where we do a call to artists in the Bay Area to submit stories for a contest,” Trost says. “And as of right now, we’ve received about 120 submissions. The winning stories would go into our kiosk and then you would be a published artist.” Ridership on transit (交通) systems across the country has been down the past half century, so could short stories save transit? Trost thinks so. “At the end of the day all transit agencies right now are doing everything they can to improve the rider experience. So I absolutely think we will get more riders just because of short stories,” she says. And you’ll never be without something to read. 4. Why did BART start the kiosk program? A. To promote the local culture. B. To discourage phone use. C. To meet passengers’ needs. D. To reduce its running costs. 5. How are the stories categorized in the kiosk? A. By popularity. B. By length. C. By theme. D. By language. 6. What has Trost been doing recently? A. Organizing a story contest. B. Doing a survey of customers. C. Choosing a print publisher. D. Conducting interviews with artists. 7. What is Trost’s opinion about BART’s future? A. It will close down. B. Its profits will decline. C. It will expand nationwide. D. Its ridership will increase. C Floods are among the most deadly and damaging disasters worldwide. Many smaller communities, especially those that have never experienced floods before, lack the tools they need to detect (监测) and manage the disaster, leaving them struggling to face the full force of flooding. To help protect these communities, the National Space Agency (NSA) has partnered with several leading scientific groups to develop a new flood detection tool called “Model of Models” (MoM) . This tool combines data from open-source hydrological (水文的) models with Earth observing satellite data to produce global flood risk level updates several times a day. When the MoM detects a high probability of flooding in an area, it sends a flood early warning to affected communities, letting them quickly take the necessary steps to save lives and belongings. “This new technology covers the face of the globe, enabling us to observe flood risk and predict the chance of floods in ways never before possible,” said Dr. Shan Clain, Manager for NSA’s Earth Science Applied Sciences Program. “The technology we’ve developed will make a huge difference, enabling early action by communities around the globe — especially small island communities and developing countries that lack the necessary early warning information to protect themselves and their loved ones during flood events.” MoM will be a game changer. Until now, full global flood early warnings have not been possible, either due to limitations in hydrologic monitoring networks, prediction models, or the professional knowledge to operate and widely share their results, especially in small and underdeveloped countries. Oma Sam, a director at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, said: “Effective early warning information is shown to save lives. However, traditional flood early warning has so far been expensive and requires local funding, resources, knowledge as well as regular care. I am looking forward to helping NSA provide this powerful MoM to all communities so that early warnings can reach the last mile.” 8. What can we learn about MoM from paragraph 2? A. It sends early warnings several times a day. B. It frequently updates global flood risk levels. C. It is specially for flood-affected communities. D. It relies on human observation to detect floods. 9. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about MoM? A. Its operational steps. B. Its development history. C. Its value and effect. D. Its technology progress. 10. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs? A. Early warning information is enough to save lives. B. MoM has been provided to all the communities now. C. MoM is expected to beat some past system limitations. D. MoM is well-received in small developing countries. 11. What is the best title for the passage? A. MoM: A Breakthrough in Global Flood Early Warning. B. NSA: A Partner of Small Communities in Flood Rescue. C. MoM Saves Small Communities From Flood Disasters. D. NSA Leads the Improvement of Flood Detection Tools. D People have been wondering why elephants do not develop cancer even though their lifespans can reach 50 to 70 years. Now scientists believe they know why. A team at the University of Chicago has found that elephants carry a large number of genes (基因) that stop tumors (肿瘤) developing. To be precise, they found 20 copies of an anti-tumor gene called TP53 in elephants. Most other species only carry one copy. According to the research, the extra copies of the gene improve the animal’s sensitivity to DNA damage, which lets the cells quickly kill themselves when damaged before they can go on to form deadly tumors. “An increased risk of developing cancer has stood in the way of the evolution (进化) of large body sizes in many animals,” said the study author Dr. Vincent Lynch. If every living cell has the same chance of becoming cancerous, large creatures with a long lifespan like whales and elephants should have a greater risk of developing cancer than humans and rats. But across species, the risk of cancer does not show a connection with body mass. This phenomenon was found by Oxford University scientist Richard Peto in the 1970s.Biologists believe it results from larger animals using protection that many smaller animals do not use. In the elephant’s case, the making of TP53 is nature’s way of keeping this species alive. The study also found that when the same genes were brought to life in rats, they had the same cancer resistance as elephants. This means researchers could use the discovery to develop new treatments that can help stop cancer spreading or even developing in the first place. “Nature has already figured out how to prevent cancer,” said Joshua Schiffman, a biologist in the University of Utah. “It’s up to us to learn how different animals deal with the problem so that we can use those strategies to prevent cancer in people.” 12. Why are elephants unlikely to develop cancer? A. They have a rather large body size. B. Their genes suffer no DNA damage. C. Certain genes in their body kill existing tumors. D. They carry many genes to prevent tumors developing. 13. According to the passage, what has been a risk in the evolution of large animals? A. Deadly tumors. B. The huge body mass. C. Cells killing themselves. D. Sensitivity to DNA damage. 14. What does the underlined part “This phenomenon” in paragraph 5 probably refer to? A. Larger animals have protection from TP53. B. The risk of cancer is not related to body sizes. C. Larger animals suffer the same risk of cancer as smaller ones. D. The huger animals are, the bigger risk of cancer they will have. 15. What can be concluded from the passage? A. Depending on nature is surely enough to fight against cancer. B. Humans are expected to prevent cancer with the making of TP53. C. The TP53 genes have proved useful in stopping cancer in people. D. The extra copies of elephants’ genes have been used to cure cancer patients. 第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Improving your career development will help you stay competitive when it’s time to seek a promotion or apply for a new opportunity. By the age of 19, Steve was a star baseball player at the University of Minnesota. I wanted to be exactly like him. So when Steve asked me to go with him on a spring fishing trip in northern Minnesota, I was excited! After planning the trip, we gathered clothes and supplies, and began our great adventure. We reached the Superior National Forest in northern Minnesota by early evening. On our way to the campsite (露营地), Steve pointed to a small house faraway in one of the mountains, saying that it was the ranger station (护林站)where the forester (护林人) worked. Finally, after a long walk, we reached the campsite and set up the camp as the sun was setting. Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper. After we gathered enough wood from the forest, he started the campfire using only stone and steel — no matches. For supper we feasted on (大吃) freeze-dried beef, wild rice and pea soup. I ate greedily after all that work. Tired enough, we climbed into our sleeping bags early and talked about our plans for fishing the next day. We were still talking quietly when a sudden north wind picked up; the temperature dropped and it began to snow. Steve found a way to increase the temperature inside the tent. He dragged a log (原木) from the forest to the opposite side of the campfire. Then he wrapped aluminum foil (铝箔) around the log. The heat from the fire reflected off the foil and into the tent. Soon images of lake fish were filling my dreams. The snow had stopped, but sometime later a powerful wind must have kicked up the flames (火焰) of our dying fire. I was suddenly awakened by Steve. Our tent was on fire. Frightened, I ran out of the tent immediately. The tent collapsed (倒塌) with Steve inside. Without any thought of endangering myself, I reached into the burning tent and pulled him to the icy lake. Fortunately, we were not seriously hurt. Later, as we stood by the burning tent to keep warm, we considered our difficult situation. Our campsite was in the deep of the forest, really far away from the highway. We were in the middle of nowhere, wearing only underwear, with our supplies burnt into ashes, including our cellphones. Even Steve was unsure what to do next. The only thing we could do was just sit in the cold air and wonder how to get out of the forest. 注意: 1. 所续写短文的词数应为 100 左右 2. 续写部分为一段,开头已经写好 Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 徐州七中高一年级4月学情调研英语试卷 试卷总分:150分 考试时间:120分钟 第Ⅰ卷 第一部分:听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节:(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。每段对话后有一个小题,从题中所给的A、B、C三个选项中选出最佳选项。听完每段对话后,你都有10秒钟的时间来回答有关小题和阅读下一小题。每段对话读两遍。 1. 【答案】4. C 5. B 6. A 7. 【答案】8. B 9. C 10. C 11. 【答案】12. D 13. A 14. B 15. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Suddenly, we heard a noise in the forest. Anxiously we listened and stared into the darkness. A jeep appeared. A forester had spotted the light from the fire and had come to check. We jumped into the warm vehicle, and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and something to eat. We couldn't have been more grateful for his timely help. Steve and I felt more than lucky to survive such an unexpected and dangerous trip. From then on, I have learned to be more careful when going camping, and I have always held a respectful attitude towards nature. 词汇激活 行为类 ①出现:appear/show up ②查看:check/examine ③凝视:stare into/gaze into 情绪类 ①意外的:unexpected/unforeseen ②感谢的:grateful/thankful 【点睛】[高分句型1] We jumped into the warm vehicle, and the forester drove us to the ranger station, where we were given clothes and something to eat.(运用了where引导非限制性定语从句) [高分句型2] From then on, I have learned to be more careful when going camping, and I have always held a respectful attitude towards nature.(运用了状语从句的省略) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
