I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had flown in from across the country to watch the celebration. But just like everyone else in my class, I had watched the economy (经济) turn from bad to worse in my fourth year of university. Almost all of us school-leavers had degrees, but a very uncertain future. The weeks ahead weren’t easy. I knew my small university town couldn’t offer me any chances, so I packed up my things and drove to Southern California to find work. But what I thought would take a week lasted for two weeks, and then four, and after getting refused from 100 jobs, I found myself in the same situation as I was in before. You know that feeling when you wake up in fear? That feeling became constant (持续不断的) in my life. ▲ And the worst part was no matter how much I tried, I just couldn’t seem to make any progress. So what did I do to keep my good sense? I decided to write. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer—a little more shining. Something about writing gave me hope. And if you want something badly enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need! I put my unhappiness into a children’s book. Beyond the River is the story of an unlikely hero, a little fish, who refused to give up his dream. And then one day, without any sort of writing degree or connections in the writing world—just a lot of hard work and push—I was offered a publishing deal for my first book! After that, things slowly began to fall into place. I was offered a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I had an interview with the Walt Disney Company and got the job shortly after. Don’t give up. Even if things don’t seem smooth now, don’t give up. If you work hard, things will always get better. Most of the time, our dreams are not far away—They’re just waiting for us. All we need is the courage to push beyond the river. 4. Why did the writer go to Southern California? A. Because she wanted to publish her books. B. Because her family and friends lived there. C. Because she didn’t like studying at university. D. Because her university town had no chances. 5. Which sentence can be put into “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 4? A. Time moved quickly and I was busy with my schoolwork. B. Friends came around and we spent happy time every day. C. My family encouraged me to stand up and offered me much useful advice. D. Days felt like weeks, weeks like months, and those months felt like endless pain. 6. Which is the right order of the following? ①I got a job at Disney Company. ②I was refused from 100 jobs. ③I wrote and put out my first book. ④I took part in my university graduation. A. ②→③→④→① B. ②→④→①→③ C. ④→②→③→① D. ④→③→②→① 7. What can we learn from the story? A. Writing is a good way to make money easily. B. Try to hold on to our dreams and never give up. C. Family support is important in our difficult time. D. Young people should keep away from difficult situations. C ①A new fashion called “Becoming Chinese” is popular with foreigners on social media like TikTok in 2026. Unlike before, this is not just about Chinese symbols. It is about learning and following daily Chinese habits. ②People around the world are trying things like wearing house slippers (拖鞋), drinking hot water, and doing Ba Duan Jin exercises. They joke about entering a “highly Chinese era.” These habits come from traditional Chinese culture, especially the idea of stopping illness before it starts. ③The fashion shows that young people are moving from just watching Chinese culture to actually trying it. They are not changing their nationality, but are learning and enjoying Chinese lifestyle. Simple things like carrying a thermos (保温瓶) or wearing slippers help them feel more connected to Chinese ways. ④Short videos make it easy to see real Chinese daily life. This breaks those old ideas you see in movies. As more foreigners visit China, they share their travel experiences online, making Chinese culture more popular. ⑤This fashion is not about big symbols, but about small daily habits. It shows that cultural influence can be soft and natural. As one TikToker said, “My culture can be your culture.” True cultural sharing happens in everyday life. 8. What Chinese habits do foreigners follow? ①wearing house slippers ②eating with chopsticks ③drinking hot water ④doing Ba Duan Jin ⑤watching Chinese movies A. ①②⑤ B. ①③④ C. ②③⑤ D. ③④⑤ 9. Why are young people trying Chinese daily habits? A. They want to change their national fashion. B. They are required to do so by social media. C. They enjoy experiencing the Chinese lifestyle. D. They want to stay away from their own culture. 10. What is the structure of the text? A. B. C. D. 11. What can be the best title of the text? A. Why Foreigners Love TikTok B. The Power of Short Videos C. How to share everyday life D. From Symbols to Daily Habits D Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he had a hard time putting his mind to class. He certainly had the ability to focus For example, when he got lost in a good book, thinking felt easy. But when it came to some other mental (脑力的) tasks, thinking was like pulling teeth and his attention was off. Westbrook is now a scientist. His research is challenging old ideas about why we can’t keep our attention on certain tasks. For years, scientists thought that mentally tiring tasks like solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out of the window. As a result, these harder tasks would make us run out of energy and lose focus more quickly. However, Westbrook’s research suggests our brain is always working hard. Even when we are just looking around a room, our brain is working on lots of information and using lots of energy. But we don’t find these tasks tiring. The real problem is that difficult tasks require different brain areas to work with each other in new ways. The brain has to break out of its usual ways, which causes discomfort and makes these tasks seem harder than they really are. “Thinking about beginning a hard task feels harder than actually doing it,” Westbrook says. This early mental difficulty can lead us to put off the task or even avoid trying. “If we can get over it, thinking will become easier,” he adds. Westbrook’s team has found ways to help us do that. For one, he suggests focusing on the good results of completing the task instead of how hard it will be. We can also try to get into “flow (心流)”. When people are in “flow”, they seem not to care how hard the task is. One key to entering “flow” is to reduce the things we are not sure about. Before writing a book report, for example, you can set yourself a goal, like finishing it in 15 minutes. Finally, it can help to make these mentally tiring tasks a habit. Try doing them at the same time and place every day or week. After a few weeks, focusing on these tasks won’t just feel easier—it will be easier. 12. How does the writer introduce the topic? A. By giving an example. B. By showing advice. C. By asking questions. D. By listing numbers. 13. What can we learn from Paragraph 3? A. Easy tasks need no attention at all. B. All mental tasks cost the same energy. C. Looking out is hard for people’s brain. D. People lose focus because they’re tired. 14. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. An old idea. B. The mental difficulty. C. The hard task. D. A good beginning. 15. What is the purpose of the text? A. To explain why we lose focus and how to get better. B. To show how difficult the mental tasks usually are. C. To tell people the importance of developing good habits. D. To introduce a great scientist called Andrew Westbrook. Choosing a job isn’t always easy, but there is still some advice to help make up your mind. 8. 【8题详解】 第二段明确提到:“People around the world are trying things like wearing house slippers, drinking hot water, and doing Ba Duan Jin exercises.”,这直接说明外国人遵循的中国习惯包括穿家居拖鞋、喝热水、做八段锦,对应①③④。 【9题详解】 第三段指出:“They are not changing their nationality, but are learning and enjoying Chinese lifestyle.”,说明年轻人尝试中国日常习惯的原因是他们喜欢体验中国的生活方式。 【11题详解】 第①段点明核心:“this is not just about Chinese symbols. It is about learning and following daily Chinese habits.”,全文围绕“从中国符号到日常习惯”这一转变展开,因此最佳标题为From Symbols to Daily Habits。 D Twenty years ago, when Andrew Westbrook was in college, he had a hard time putting his mind to class. A 13. D 14. B 15. 【13题详解】 根据第三段的“… mentally tiring tasks like solving math problems required more energy than easier ones like looking out of the window… harder tasks would make us run out of energy and lose focus more quickly”可知,脑力消耗的任务比简单任务消耗更多能量,因此难任务会让我们精力耗尽、更快失去注意力。 【14题详解】 根据前一句“This early mental difficulty can lead us to put off the task or even avoid trying.”可知,it指代前文的“the mental difficulty”。 Choosing a job isn’t always easy, but there is still some advice to help make up your mind.
