Now more and more students from other countries visit China. Liam, a 24-year-old college student from Canada who studies history, is one of them.
Liam’s trip to China began in Beijing, the country’s capital, with a history of over 3,000 years. During his three-day stay there, he visited many famous places he wanted to see: he walked up the Mutianyu part of the Great Wall, walked through the red-walled yards of the Palace Museum, and even tried jianbing—a crispy, delicious breakfast pancake—from a street shop near his hotel. “I saw photos of the Great Wall before, but nothing is better than standing on it and looking at the mountains,” Liam said later. “It felt like I was walking into a history book.”
After Beijing, Liam took a high-speed train to Xi’an. The Terracotta Army (兵马俑 ) was the main reason he wanted to visit Xi’an. He was shocked by their clear faces and the old skill used to make them. Besides the Terracotta Army, Liam also went to the Shaanxi Folk Art Museum. There, an artist taught him to make paper-cutting. He even painted a small clay (陶土) figurine to take home as a gift. “Watching the artist work was cool, but doing it myself made me feel closer to the culture,” Liam said.
Liam’s last stop was Chengdu, famous for giant pandas. He got a chance to hold a 6-month-old baby panda there and was deeply moved by the kind local people who helped him when he got lost.
By the end of his trip, Liam loved China very much. “At first, I thought this was just a vacation to see famous places,” he said. “But it turned out to be much more. I learned about China’s history, tried its food, and made real friends with people. This trip made me want to learn Chinese. I’m already planning to return next year—maybe with my parents then.” For Liam, his trip to China was not just about visiting new places. It was about opening his heart to a new culture and making memories that will last forever.
8. Which city was the first one Liam visited?
A. Xi’an. B. Beijing. C. Chengdu. D. Shanghai.
9. What was the main reason for Liam to visit Xi’an?

10. What can we learn from Liam’s words at the end of the trip?
A. He planned to study Chinese history at a college in China.
B. He would bring his parents to visit the Great Wall the next year.
C. He only regarded the trip as a common vacation to visit scenic spots.
D. The trip made him want to learn Chinese and he wanted to come back again.

It is black and white, with two big black eyes. It looks very cute and a little shy. Pandas love eating bamboo best, and they also like to sleep for a long time every day. I like pandas because they are so lovely. Last summer, I went to the zoo with my parents and watched them eat slowly. I felt very happy and excited then.

A. To see the Terracotta Army. B. To take a high-speed train from Beijing.
C. To eat a delicious breakfast pancake. D. To learn paper-cutting at a folk art museum.
11. What is the main purpose (目的) of the passage?
A. To introduce Liam’s colorful college life in Canada.
B. To encourage more people to visit China’s places of interest.

“Wow, these trees are the tallest and straightest I’ve ever seen!” William shouted excitedly while walking with his classmates in a forest. They had looked forward to this science field trip for a long time. The teacher told them they would learn about plants and forest protection that day.
On the way, they met Victor, a worker who had lived in a small wooden house in the forest for over ten years. When William saw the simple house, he laughed at Victor with his friends. They thought Victor’s living environment was too poor and boring.
