Passage 1
Have you ever seen bronzeware (青铜器)? It can be thousands of years old. Recently, a middle school in Shanxi held an exhibition named Amazing Bronzeware Memories. The exhibits, however, were not that old at all. They were made by students.
Junior high school students from Taiyuan Lingde Middle School made more than 130 pieces of “bronzeware”. The materials included cardboard boxes, plastics, clay and paint. They cut the cardboard into shapes and then coated them with bronze-colored paint or clay. “These ‘bronze’ artworks looked so real I felt like I went back in history,” said one student visitor.
Li Danyu from Grade 7 made a set of chimes (编钟). “I watched a chime music show in Xi’an,” said Li. “The sounds of this ancient instrument were so beautiful that I fell in love with it.” “The hardest part was to add the patterns,” said Li. “I used napkins to fold difficult patterns, such as Xiangyun and dragons, and glued them to the chimes. I also imitated (模仿) a real chime bell and wrote the characters ‘Chu Hui Wang’ in Zhuanshu.”
Yang Zixing, in Grade 7, is crazy about ancient weapons, so he made a halberd (戟). “I brushed green, gold and blue paint on the main body, and added some black to the bottom. In this way, the ‘bronzeware’ looks ‘unearthed’, “Yang said.
Simuwu Rectangle Ding (司母戊鼎), the mask from Sanxingdui site, the goose-shaped bronze lamp—students not only showed their talents for handicrafts but also had a chance to enjoy the art and culture of ancient China.

Passage 2
Frost’s Descent (霜降) is the 18th of the 24 solar terms (节气) in the Chinese lunar calendar. It usually starts around October 23rd and ends around November 6th. It is the last solar term of autumn. This means winter is coming soon. It is called “Frost’s Descent” because this is the time of year when frost starts to appear. During this time, temperatures drop a lot. Because of this, we can see frost begins to form on the ground and plants. Many trees lose their leaves, and some animals start to prepare for their winter sleep.
For farmers, it’s a busy season. In northern China, they are finishing the harvest. In the south, they are gathering crops like sweet potatoes and protecting winter crops from the cold. It’s also a great time to go hiking and enjoy the beautiful red maple leaves.
What do you like to eat to keep warm in cold weather? Persimmons (柿子) are a popular choice during Frost’s Descent. People believe that eating persimmons can help keep them warm and make their bones stronger. Apples and pears are also good for health. In some places like Fujian and Taiwan, people often eat duck. There is even a saying: “Even nourishing (滋养) all year is not as good as nourishing the body during Frost’s Descent”.

Passage 3
For thousands of years, humans have created flying objects using one simple rule: lighter-than-air things rise. From Chinese paper lanterns to Western airships, different cultures found similar solutions to touch the sky.
Over 1,800 years ago, smart inventor Zhuge Liang needed to send messages at night. He created special lanterns with bamboo sticks and thin paper. When soldiers lit a small candle under the lantern, warm air filled the paper bag. As the air inside became hotter and lighter than the cool night air, the lantern would shake softly, then slowly fly up to the sky. Today, during festivals, people write their wishes on these “Kongming lanterns” and watch hundreds of them shining like stars in the dark sky.
In 1852, a French engineer created the first flying machine that people could control. By the 1900s, German engineers developed Zeppelins. These “sky ships” had gas bags filled with special light gases (hydrogen氢气) and they were lighter than normal air.
These huge gas bags needed protection, so workers built metal frames around them. The ships also had strong skeletons(框架) inside to keep their shape, and noisy engines with spinning wheels to push them forward. People could sit in comfortable rooms under the balloon and enjoy a wonderful trip!
All inventions follow nature’s law: lighter things rise above heavier ones. From ancient Chinese lanterns to today’s sky adventures, this simple science continues to lift human dreams higher and closer to the sky!

Passage 4
What will the world of tomorrow look like? Many people today believe that technology is going to help solve some of the most difficult problems we have on Earth today. New technology may solve old problems, and it may also create new ones. No technology is perfect. Each has advantages and disadvantages, as these three examples.
When we dream about the future, many of us think that we will be able to fly to the skies in our own personal flying car. We could fly at 480 km per hour, avoiding traffic lights and busy roads. However, if the cars become popular, there will be problems with traffic control.
3D printing is another new technology for the future. 3D printers are already used to make life-size models of car parts, and man-made body parts, such as ears. As we move into the future, 3D printing will change the way we make things and the way we treat sick people. The future of 3D printing looks bright. But the disadvantage is that such a machine is very expensive.
Finally, people are trying to build a robot suit. This is an electronic suit. It allows people to lift heavy objects and walk a long way. After an illness or an accident, it might also help people walk again. However, one disadvantage at the moment is cost.
Looking ahead, it is easy to imagine a future. We will be able to fly to work, print out a new pair of shoes or lift a car above our heads. Although there are some problems to solve before all of this is possible, we can certainly dream of a world. In this world, technology makes people’s life easier and safer. It can solve some of the most difficult problems we have today. In my view, life in the future will be different from what it is now.

Do you enjoy traveling around? If you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight (航班) will take you more than 13 hours. Luckily enough, in the future, the journey might take only two hours.
At present, a company (公司) is developing something called ET3, which stands for the “Evacuated Tube Transport (真空管运输) Technology”. How does it work? The tube is only a few meters wide and capsules (密闭舱) move through it. Each capsule can hold up to six people. For international travel, the capsules can reach speeds of about 6,500 kilometers per hour.
Then you might wonder, “How is it possible for these capsules to travel at such high speeds?” Because there isn’t any air inside the tube. Moreover, each capsule weighs only 183 kilograms.
There are also other good sides of ET3. Since it runs on electricity, it is quite clean. Besides, it is much quieter than airplanes or cars. Lastly, the ET3 system, including the tube and capsules, doesn’t require a large number of building materials.
Of course, the ET3 system still has a few problems. On the one hand, people have to spend too much money building and operating (运行) it. On the other hand, great technological improvements are still required to make sure of the normal operation of ET3.

Passage 8
Chinese humor in English is helping the world understand Chinese culture better. It’s used a lot, especially on social media. This shows that Chinglish, a mix of English and Chinese, is not always regarded as wrong now, but as a fun way to connect with others.
A popular example is a post (帖子) by a foreign blogger on a Chinese website. She talked about parting from her boyfriend. Many Chinese people left their ideas in English to comfort her, but their English wasn’t perfect. So some words of kindness turned into “You pretty, he not, u swan, he frog.” But others think it was fine because it was fast and convenient to write shorter words without changing the main meaning.
Chinglish even plays a part in the Oxford English Dictionary. Phrases like “add oil”, meaning jiayou in Chinese and “cheer” in English, have already been in the dictionary. Similar examples also include “Long time no see”. Such an act shows the phrases or words are so popular that they can’t be neglected (忽视).
Chinglish is now seen in things like video games, where Chinese words are kept instead of being translated. This can be seen from the latest hot game around the world with a rich Chinese culture—Black Myth: Wukong. In it, the Chinese words like yaoguai are no longer translated into English words, but kept as they are in Chinese. And foreign players just accept them and learn them happily as part of Chinese culture. This helps people around the world learn more about China.
However, some people also show their worries. They said that Chinglish should not be used in situations like in class or at an important work meeting or discussion. It may cause misunderstanding and make others think you’re impolite.
Chinglish Connects the World
In the past
Mixing English and Chinese used to be a 1. ____________.

Passage 9
You may have much homework to do every day. Homework is an important part of school. Your teachers can know how much you have learned in class through your homework, and it helps you remember what you have learned. Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.
First, be sure to know your homework. Write it down in your notebook, and don’t be afraid of asking questions about your homework. It’s much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher in or after class than to try to remember later that night!
Second, use extra (额外的) time in school to do your homework. Many schools have study halls. Students can study and do homework there. It’s interesting to hang out (闲逛) with friends during the lunch break (休息). However, the more work you finish in school, the less you’ll have to do that night. It’s difficult to keep your attention for too long. So take a break while doing your homework.
Third, make a homework schedule (时间表). If you don’t finish your homework at school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then make a plan about your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it’s a heavy homework day and it seems like you’ve got homework in every subject, you’ll need more time to finish it. So, you really need to make a homework schedule.
1. Homework helps your ____________ know how much you have learned in class.
2. Be sure to know your homework and write it down ____________.
3. Take a break while doing your homework to keep your ____________.
4. Make a homework ____________ to use your time effectively (有效地).
