Vegan Food & Living — Your Caring Companion
About it
Established in 2015, Vegan Food & Living is an award-winning multi-media brand which includes a magazine and a website. We are a majority vegan (素食者) team, including long-term vegans as well as those transitioning. Supportive, non-judgemental and inclusive, we care passionately about health, animals and the planet. Our aim is to raise awareness about vegan issues and encourage as many people as possible to start enjoying a vegan diet and lifestyle.
Welcome to this issue
After our unusually warm summer, a lot of us will welcome the arrival of cooler autumn days. And few dishes demonstrate this seasonal transition more beautifully than the dishes like curries and stews (p12), where layers of flavor meet the comforting heartiness of autumn produce. Autumn vegetables, like squash, roots and pulses, transform into bowls of flavor that are as healthy as they are colorful, offering a reminder that plant-based food is both multi-function and satisfying.
For many vegans, autumn carries a special meaning. At a time when the world feels in continuous changes, the steady rhythm of the seasons is grounding. Nature reminds us that change is not only unavoidable but essential, and that each season offers its own richness. Cooking with what is truly in season allows us to stay connected to this cycle — choosing ingredients that are not only fresher and more sustainable but also more meaningful.
In a world of year-round choice, there is something restorative about celebrating what is here now. Each spoonful becomes more than comfort — it is a reminder that in enjoying the seasons, we find continuity, balance and a deeper connection to the earth.
Enjoy the issue.

On August 28, a group of middle school students gathered outside the Guiyang International Convention and Exhibition Center in Guizhou Province. Selected by the media center of Guanshanhu District, these students were about to make their appearance as bilingual reporters at the 2025 China International Big Data Industry Expo, reporting in both English and Chinese.
Among them was 15-year-old Li Yihan from Zunyi. “I’ve read several journalists’ stories and have always been fascinated by this profession,” he shared. To prepare, Li and his partners underwent thorough pre-job training: their English teacher reviewed potential interview questions, and experienced journalists taught them how to respond flexibly in complex situations. As they entered the exhibition hall, the students were immediately attracted by the cutting-edge technology on display. Li focused his report on “Wukong”, a cable (电缆) repair robot by China Southern Power Grid, whose operators can control remotely in real time, removing the need for humans to enter dangerous areas.
14-year-old Liu Yunyi from Guiyang interviewed a man who’d lost his forearm and had a robotic arm fixed. The man explained the arm simplified daily tasks — from writing to carrying objects — and boosted his overall quality of life. “This expo let me see how advanced China’s tech is, things I once only imagined in sci-fi,” Liu said. Another 14-year-old, Wang Zini, was drawn by drone soccer: quadcopters (四轴飞行器) inside a netted field flown through hanging circles, which was played in 3×3 or 5×5 styles, and now enters official competitions, She also spoke with a US exhibitor, shifting to lifestyle topics like Guiyang’s cuisine when technical terms confused her, overcoming initial nervousness with the exhibitor’s warmth.
Liu opted for video reporting over writing. She faced barriers: some interviewees refused filming, and passers-by wandered into frames (镜头), making reshoots necessary. Yet she finished four videos, realizing journalists don’t just share information — they conduct in-depth research to present facts clearly. Li, who’d visited as a viewer before, noted the difference: as a reporter, he engaged deeply with products and grew to appreciate researchers’ great efforts.
4. What did the students do before the 2025 China International Big Data Industry Expo?
A. They wrote news reports. B. They got pre-job training.
C. They interviewed exhibitors. D. They visited exhibition halls.
5. What made “Wukong” special according to Li Yihan?
A. It allows remote real-time control. B. It looks like the Monkey King.
C. It can repair cables by itself. D. It is used in sci-fi movies.
6. What did Liu Yunyi learn from video reporting?
A. Sci-fi tech is easy to film. B. Video is better than writing.
C. Interviewees love being on camera. D. Reporters need to dig deep for facts.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Teens Report on Tech B. Reporters Advance with Times
C. Cool Tech at the Expo D. A Big Data Expo in Guiyang

Increasing exposure to burning hot-weather days appears to significantly quicken people’s biological aging.
“We now have at least two outstanding studies showing a clear impact of heatwave exposure on aging, with these carefully examining populations from two different countries,” says Paul Beggs at Macquarie University in Australia.
Siyi Chen at the University of Hong Kong and her co-workers used detailed medical screening data from nearly 25,000 adults in Taiwan Province of China to precisely determine the biological age of each person based on key indicators like inflammation (炎症), blood pressure, organ function and more. Next, they closely compared each individual’s biological age with their actual age, to figure out if they were aging faster or slower than normal.
The team then accurately calculated each person’s cumulative exposure to heatwaves, including the greatly increasing number of intense heatwaves they had lived through, up until two full years prior to their medical screening. The summed-up number of heatwave days experienced ended up being the most significant, impactful factor for quickened aging. The results closely agreed with a recent, careful study that investigated outdoor heat’s specific impact on aging in older US adults.
For the group of Taiwan Province of China, the aging effect generally increased steadily as the amount of cumulative heatwave exposure did. Each four-day increase in total heatwave duration was associated with a biological age increase equal to about nine additional days.
But the effect was even more striking for specific easily-harmed people. For instance, physical workers experienced around three times as much quickened aging from the same amount of heat exposure compared to the general group as a whole. Residents of rural communities also experienced greater, more noticeable aging impacts, indicating access to reliable air conditioners might be able to effectively break down heat’s aging effects, the researchers say.
To avoid making climate change and heatwaves worse, however, air conditioning will need to be improved by more sustainable cooling solutions, says Beggs.
8. Why does the author mention Paul Beggs in paragraph 2?
A. To compare the two studies.
B. To confirm heatwaves speed biological aging.
C. To introduce a new aging research method.
D. To explain heatwaves’ effect on populations.
9. What did Siyi Chen’s team do first in their research?
A. They determined the subjects’ biological age.
B. They compared biological age with actual age.
C. They analyzed the impact of heatwaves on aging.
D. They worked out the participants’ heatwave exposure.
10. What does the underlined word “cumulative” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Total. B. Recent. C. Random. D. Minor.
11. What can we know about physical workers from paragraph 6?
A. They rarely take medical screenings.
B. They have more access to air conditioners.
C. Their aging is faster due to heat exposure.
D. They are more likely to live in rural areas.
D
In 2025, a striking “Industrial Disneyland” trend has taken hold among young Chinese. When Xiaomi’s Beijing automobile factory opened its doors to visitors in January, over 4,600 people signed up for a mere 20 spots, Similarly, tech robotics firm Unitree saw its factory tour tickets resold for as much as 3,000 yuan ($420.65) each, yet demand still far outpaced supply. This shift marks a clear preference among young people for factories over traditional weekend visited places like shopping malls or theme parks.
Behind the trend lie multiple drivers. For families, factories serve as dynamic classrooms, letting children witness production processes and bridge textbook knowledge with real-world practice. Young professionals find nostalgia (怀旧) in these spaces, recalling the industrial foundation that supported their parents’ generation while escaping their own screen-dominated lives. Content creators, too, are drawn to factories — machine rhythms, assembly (装配) lineoperation, and touchable production offer Great inspiration that brings life to audiences tired of digital content.
More importantly, the trend reflects young people’s belief in factories symbols of national capability and modern creativity. Visiting a factory is not just entertainment; it satisfies curiosity about everyday product creation and strengthens confidence in the country’s technological roots, combining personal novelty-seeking with collective industrial pride.
It also signals broader social and tourism transformations. China now exhibits greater confidence in its industrial base, fitting production into culture and leisure. Tourism itself is shifting from passive watching to participatory, affordable experiences — perfect for a generation facing economic pressures yet longing for meaningful recreation.
Globally, industrial tourism is not new, with France’s Citroen opening workshops in the 1950s and European beer factories welcoming millions yearly. But China’s wave has unique cultural weight, with at least 13 major firms opening lines in five years, shifting from “Made in China” to “Experienced in China”. While it contributes less than 5% of China’s tourism income, this gap is an opportunity: balanced openness, immersive (沉浸的) routes, and being easy to understand could turn “Industrial Disneyland” into a mainstream cultural tourism.
12. How does the author illustrate the popularity of the “Industrial Disneyland” trend?
A. By quoting experts. B. By giving examples.
C. By explaining its causes. D. By introducing its history.
13. What do young professionals gain from factory visits?
A. Ideas for unique online content. B. Working opportunity with experts.
C. Production knowledge for their kids. D. Past memories and a break from screens.
14. What does the “Industrial Disneyland” trend show about young people?
A. They long for factory jobs. B. They prefer expensive travel.
C. They take pride in China’s industry. D. They dislike traditional theme parks.
15. In what way is China’s industrial tourism different globally?
A. It started much earlier. B. It focuses on car factories.
C. It takes the lead for tourism. D. It has special cultural meanings.

Accidentally bleached (漂白) your favorite jeans? Here are practical tips for covering the annoying mark.
When it comes to dealing with dirt marks on your clothes, accidental bleach splashes (溅) are the most upsetting ones to deal with. Unlike red wine or coffee, bleach doesn’t actually mark your clothes.____16____This means there’s absolutely no way to get rid of the obvious mark.
However, if your clothes have come out looking worse for wear due to a bleach-based incident, there’s no need to throw them away in a hurry.____17____This restoration helps prevent unnecessary clothing waste, which is really good for environmental protection.
One way to treat a bleach mark is to include it into a unique, wearable piece of art.____18____Look for useful step-by-step guides online about bleach-painting clothes to get you started easily.
Alternatively, depending on the size and exact placement of the bleach mark, another easy fix is to cover it with a well-placed patch (补片).____19____Iron-on patches are the easiest to apply. As the name suggests, you need zero sewing. Use the heat of your iron to stick the patch firmly to your clothing. If you’re handy with a needle and thread, you can sew patches too.
For small, tiny splashes, try a quality fabric marker pen to cover them.____20____Just use the pen to carefully color in the bleach spot and you’re good to go. The color stays on even after repeated washes.
Just remember to wear old, unwanted clothes so that you don’t accidentally bleach anything precious in the process!
A. Bleach doesn’t get your clothing dirty.
B. Use bleach to create design patterns on them.
C. It removes color permanently where it splashes.
D. Choose a colorful fun one or one of the same color.
E. Fabric markers match different clothing styles nicely.
F. Clever techniques can restore your clothes to former honor.
G. You can buy these special pens online or at Works or The Range.

When Ms Carter led Mia into our classroom, the room fell quiet. With her hair tied loosely and a blue backpack held tight, she stood frozen by the door, eyes looking around like a lost bird. “This is our exchange student from Sweden,” Ms Carter said. “Hello,” Mia said. Her voice was so soft that I emptied the seat behind me, and I noticed her shaking hands as she pulled out a notebook.
The first sign of trouble came at lunch. I saw Mia staring at her tray (碟) of spicy noodles, fork in hand uselessly. When I waved her over, she shook her head, forcing a smile that didn’t reach her eyes. Later, during group work, we tried to include her, but her broken English got confusing. “I … I don’t know the word,” she whispered, cheeks burning. That afternoon, I passed the library and saw her sitting alone, looking through photos on her phone — tears on her cheeks. My heart ached. I knew that lonely, out-of-place feeling.
By the end of the week, Mia still hadn’t spoken much. She ate alone, kept her head down in class, and avoided the playground during breaks. My deskmate Lily talked to me one morning. “She looks so sad,” she said. “We have to do something.” I thought about how scared I’d been when I moved to this school last year — how a single kind word had made all the difference. Mia’s silence wasn’t shyness; it was fear of being invisible.
One day, I accidentally knocked over her water bottle. As I helped clean it up, I noticed her notebook was filled with English words scrawled (潦草地写) over and over. “You’re working really hard,” I said. She looked up, surprised, and then nodded. “It’s so hard,” she admitted, voice breaking. “I miss my mom. Everything here is ... too much.” I held her hand gently, promising we’d help. Her eyes welled up, and she quickly wiped them away, saying “Thank you.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Lily and I brainstormed plans to make Mia feel welcome.

B 9. A 10. A 11. C

根据第二段““We now have at least two outstanding studies showing a clear impact of heatwave exposure on aging, with these carefully examining populations from two different countries,” says Paul Beggs at Macquarie University in Australia.(澳大利亚麦考瑞大学的Paul Beggs表示:“目前我们至少有两项高质量研究表明,暴露于热浪会对衰老产生明确影响,且这两项研究都对来自两个不同国家的人群进行了细致的调研。”)”
根据第三段“Siyi Chen at the University of Hong Kong and her co-workers used detailed medical screening data from nearly 25,000 adults in Taiwan Province of China to precisely determine the biological age of each person based on key indicators like inflammation (炎症), blood pressure, organ function and more.(香港大学的陈斯怡及其同事利用中国台湾省近2.5万名成年人的详细医疗筛查数据,根据炎症、血压、器官功能等关键指标,精确确定了每个人的生物年龄。)” 故选A。
根据第四段“ including the greatly increasing number of intense heatwaves they had lived through, up until two full years prior to their medical screening. The summed-up number of heatwave days experienced ended up being the most significant, impactful factor for quickened aging.(其中包括他们直到距离体检前整整两年之前所经历的、数量大幅增加的极端热浪。最终发现,所经历的热浪总天数,是加速衰老最显著、影响最大的因素。)”可知,研究团队随后精准计算了每个人累计暴露于热浪的时长,因此划线词“cumulative”的意思是“累计的,总的”,与total同义。故选A。
根据第六段“For instance, physical workers experienced around three times as much quickened aging from the same amount of heat exposure compared to the general group as a whole.(例如,与普通人群整体相比,体力劳动者在相同的热量暴露下,衰老速度加快了约三倍。)”
B 13. D 14. C 15. D

根据第二段“Young professionals find nostalgia (怀旧) in these spaces, recalling the industrial foundation that supported their parents’ generation while escaping their own screen-dominated lives. (年轻的专业人士在这些空间中找到了怀旧之情,他们回忆起支撑父母那一代的工业基础,同时也摆脱了自己被屏幕主导的生活。)”可知,年轻的专业人士从工厂参观中获得了过去的回忆和摆脱屏幕的机会。故选D项。
【14题详解】

和空后“This means there’s absolutely no way to get rid of the obvious mark.(这意味着完全没有办法去除这个明显的痕迹。)”
根据空前“However, if your clothes have come out looking worse for wear due to a bleach-based incident, there’s no need to throw them away in a hurry.(但是,如果衣服因漂白事故变得破旧,不用急着扔掉。)”和空后“This restoration helps prevent unnecessary clothing waste, which is really good for environmental protection.(这种修复有助于避免不必要的衣物浪费,这对环境保护是很有利的。)”
根据空前“One way to treat a bleach mark is to include it into a unique, wearable piece of art.(处理漂白痕迹的方法之一是把它变成独特、可穿的艺术品。)”和空后“Look for useful step-by-step guides online about bleach-painting clothes to get you started easily.(上网找关于漂白印染衣服的详细步骤指南,让你更容易开始修复。)”
根据空前“Alternatively, depending on the size and exact placement of the bleach mark, another easy fix is to cover it with a well-placed patch (补片).(或者,根据漂白剂标记的大小和确切的位置,另一个简单的修复方法是用一个合适的补丁覆盖它。)”和空后“Iron-on patches are the easiest to apply. As the name suggests, you need zero sewing.(熨烫补丁是最容易粘贴的。正如其名字一样,你不需要缝补。)”可知,上文提到“用补丁遮盖”,下文开始讲“熨斗补丁和缝补补丁,即补丁的类型”,故此空需要补充关于补丁的选择建议,故D项“选择一个有趣的彩色补丁,或者和衣服同色的补丁。”符合,衔接“补丁”这个概念和下文的“补丁应用方法”。故选D项。
【20题详解】
根据空前“For small, tiny splashes, try a quality fabric marker pen to cover them.(对于漂白点比较小的地方,试试用优质的织物马克笔遮盖它们。)”和空后“Just use the pen to carefully color in the bleach spot and you’re good to go.(只需用笔小心地给漂白点上色就可以了)”可知,上文提到“用织物马克笔”,下文直接讲“用笔上色”,故此空需要补充这种笔的获取方式,故G项“你可以在网上或在Works、The Range买到这些特殊的笔。”

Lily and I brainstormed plans to make Mia feel welcome. We decided to organize a “Culture Share” party, where everyone could learn about Sweden and share their own cultures to cheer Mia up. First, we invited Mia to teach us Swedish words and traditional handcrafts. She agreed with a shy but eager smile. We also prepared Swedish snacks together, like cinnamon rolls, and made posters introducing Sweden. The whole class was excited and actively offered to help.
Fully prepared, the “Culture Share” party arrived on Friday. Mia stood nervously at first, but when she started showing us Swedish folk dances and teaching simple phrases, her eyes sparkled. We all cheered and tried the phrases, laughing loudly. Then, everyone shared their own cultures too. Mia’s smile became genuine, and she even joined in our games. After the party, she came to us, her voice filled with warmth, “Thank you. I feel like I’m home now.”
