In 1998,a group of friends was making soup together when inspiration struck:They wondered if they
could transform their vegetables into musical instruments. The idea started as a joke. But since they were
signed up to perform at an upcoming festival anyway, they decided to test out their idea. That's when the
Vegetable Orchestra was born.
Now,some 25 years later, the Vegetable Orchestra has played more than 340 concerts using fresh
vegetables. The group has now set a world record for most concerts by a vegetable orchestra.
The Vegetable Orchestra is based in Vienna,Austria, but performs all over the world. The group tries
a variety of musical genres.Because fresh veggies only last a few hours after being cut and handled, the
musicians have to make new instruments for each show. They search local markets for produce that looks
and sounds interesting. They then use drills, knives and other kitchen tools to transform the veggies into
instruments. Each musician makes between eight and 25 instruments for each show,as BBC News'Eliot
Stein reported in 2019.Some instruments are made of several different types of vegetables. The group uses
special microphones to amplify their vegetable tunes.
The pieces of veggies left over from preparing the instruments get cooked into soup.At the end of each
concert, the band members serve the soup to the audience.
Their improvisational (performances have inspired other groups around the world, including
the London Vegetable Orchestra and Long Island Vegetable Orchestra. The group has also recorded and
released four albums.
"Many people think we're kind of just a funny performance,"orchestra member Susanna Gartmayer
told BBC News."But they're surprised to understand that there's actually a lot of sonic (potential
in vegetables, and that we want to make really interesting music.

A.They prefer to use seasonal vegetables.B.They donate old instruments to schools.
C.Fresh processed vegetables don't last long.D.Audiences request different instruments.
3.What does the underlined word "amplify"probably mean in paragraph 3?
A.Record.
B.Influence.
C.Enhance.

A new study, published in Brain Communications, found that shrinkage in the front and side of the
brain was linked to difficulty remembering words. It highlights how the network that is involved in creating
and storing word memories is distributed throughout the brain.
This is particularly crucial for helping to understand conditions such as epilepsy ()in which
patients may have difficulty in remembering words.Corresponding author,Professor John Duncan(UCL
Queen Square Institute of Neurology)said,"Being able to remember and recall words is important for day-
to-day memory to work well.By measuring the parts of the brain that are shrunken and how well a person
can remember words,we can work out which parts of the brain are used for making and storing memories.
In the first study of its kind, the researchers examined 84 people with temporal lobe (epilepsy

and hippocampal sclerosis (and 43 healthy people. The patients were divided into those with
left-sided and right-sided hippocampal sclerosis.High-resolution MRI scans were used to measure the size
and shape of different parts of the brain, including the cerebral cortex (the outer layer of the brain
responsible for thinking, memory, attention, perception, awareness, and language)and specific areas
within the hippocampus in patients with hippocampal sclerosis (a condition in which part of the brain is
scarred, and memory is affected). All participants underwent standardized tests to assess their verbal
memory. The researchers then compared the memory test scores to the sizes of different brain areas,to see
if smaller brain parts were linked to worse memory.
They found that smaller sizes in certain brain areas, like the prefrontal, temporal and cingulate
cortices, and parts of the hippocampus, were linked to worse memory for words in people with epilepsy
arising in their temporal lobes.
These findings are also important for understanding how the brain organizes and remembers words.
Lead author,Dr Giorgio Fiore (National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery,UCLH)said,"This
research is important as it helps us to understand how memory may fail and may help guide the designing of
neurosurgical operations for epilepsy that will not make memory worse."
1.What does the research reveal about the brain's memory network?
A.Memory network is centered in brain's front.
B.Memory network is spread throughout the brain.
C.Word memory mostly relies on the hippocampus.
D.Word memory mainly depends on cerebral cortex
2.How did the researchers conduct the study?
A.By analyzing the memory test scores.
B.By dividing participants into two groups.
C.By scanning the participants'halves of the brain.
D.By assessing the participants'symptom severity.
3.What is Dr Giorgio Fiore's attitude towards the study?
A.Disapproving.B.Skeptical.
C.Supportive.
D.Cautious.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A.Brain shrinkage is critical for verbal memory.
B.Epilepsy patients require neurosurgical surgery.
C.Epilepsy patients'memory issues will be cured.
D.Brain regions for word memory have been identified.
At a smart farm in England, pigs begin their day with breakfast while an AI system called Intellipig
scans their faces.By analyzing snouts, eyes, and ears, the system detects pain or stress instantly, not only
alerting distant farmers through automated notifications but also adjusting feeding schedules based on real-
time data. This UK-developed technology aims to bridge human-animal communication gaps and improve
animals'well-being by decoding hidden emotions.
Actually, the inspiration of the technology for recognizing animals'facial expressions as emotional
signals can trace back to Darwin's 1872 theory of a "shared language"among mammals. However,
accurately interpreting these signals across diverse species remains challenging.A modern researcher
named Emma Baxter,an animal behavior scientist, uses "grimace scales"to tackle the obstacle. For
instance,it confirms that a horse with rotated ears or worry wrinkles is in pain by measuring how much pain
the horse is experiencing based on the movements of its facial muscles,a process previously time-
consuming for those who used hand-checked analysis.
The breakthrough lies in landmarking:marking key facial points (e.g.,eyes,nostrils)to train
algorithms ()Computer scientist Anna Zamansky developed AI tools trained on thousands of marked
photos,achieving 77%accuracy in detecting cat pain-surpassing human experts-while Gabriel
Lencioni's system identified horse pain with 88%accuracy using 3,000 images.

Yet challenges remain.AI might focus on irrelevant details, like a clock in the background, leading
to errors."If images of pain-free animals are always taken at 10 am,AI may link the clock to 'no
pain',"Zamansky explains, even if it's not.Additionally,Dr Peter Robinson also notes that limited
labeled datasets slow down progress,as algorithms require vast amounts of diverse data to avoid biases.
Despite this, scientists now explore more complex emotions and envision broader applications of this
technology.Zamansky's dream "dog emotion decoder"app aims to interpret basic affective states, while
others integrate facial analysis with body language for further complete assessments.Ultimately, the aim of
the technology is clear:ensure animals live not just healthily, but happily."AI isn't replacing humans,"
Zamansky added,"but enhancing our capacity to create conditions where animals can truly flourish."
1.What is the primary purpose of the Intellipig system?
A.To train pigs with Al.
B.To automate farm tasks.
C.To monitor animal health.
D.To boost pork production.
2.What does the underlined term "grimace scales"in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.Tools tracking muscle activity.
B.Methods assessing facial pain.
C.Devices measuring movements.
D.Algorithms marking landmarks
3.Why is the example of“a clock at 10am”mentioned in paragraph4?
A.To explain AI's time-based logic.
B.To stress AI's data collection needs.
C.To highlight AI's background details.
D.To reveal Al's potential misjudgments.
4.What is Anna Zamansky's view on AI's role?
A.Its accuracy varies by species.
B.It replaces traditional methods.
C.It heightens animal care efforts.
D.It reduces human involvement.

When Antoine Bruy started hitchhiking (as a 17-year-old,catching rides across France,it
opened his mind to all sorts of possibilities. But one encounter in particular became transformative in itself,
shaping his path as a photographer."Some people who picked me up were trying to be self-sufficient,
using solar panels and growing their own organic gardens,"he says.
Four years later, having completed his photography degree,Antoine began seeking out similar
communities:people who had lived in the city only to choose a self-sustained rural life, far from the
nearest Wi-Fi hotspot.
These encounters became Scrublands,a photo essay that's part documentary and part travelogue.
Scrublands is not a project about forgotten cultures or being remote for remote's sake. It's about modern life
and the measures some people will take to get away from it.
A place that left a lasting impression was a goat farm in the French Pyrenees. It's run by Peter,a one-
time German athlete who arrived 30 years ago,and a former maths teacher called Vincent, who's been
there for seven years.
Antoine visited them several times, each day climbing over the hill to milk their goats."Those guys
were really extreme in the way they refused to have electricity. They didn't use any modern machines that
needed petrol or anything like that. They did everything by hand.
Currently based in the once-proud industrial city of Lille,Antoine is taking a break after recent trips
to Australia and the US,where he has shot some additional photos for Scrublands.
Now that his photography career may see him more reliant on the Internet than ever,I ask Antoine
how he views himself-whether he feels part of the city or is slowly edging towards a self-sustained lifestyle
of his own.
"I'm still thinking of what would be the best way of leading my daily life without being too dependent
on money or cars,he says."That's what interested me the most in this project.I really like this idea of
being satisfied with the way you live without having to consume too much."
1.What inspired Antoine to be a photographer?
A.His interest in photography.
B.The beautiful gardens in France.
C.His meeting with some strangers.
D.The encouragement from a teacher.

Ask an art historian about 15th-century Italian art and they'll probably bring up Sandro Botticelli's
Primavera,Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper or the early career works of Michelangelo.Meanwhile,
assessments of the Florentine sculptor Donatello often pale in comparison with praise of his superstar
contemporaries.Donatello deserves better, argues an ambitious new exhibition. On view through July 31 at
two museums in Florence,Italy,Donatello:The Renaissance tries to place the sculptor at the center of the
era, writes reporter Elisabetta Povoledo for The New York Times.
"This is an extremely unusual exhibit, since Donatello is a father of the Renaissance,Donatello
scholar Francesco Caglioti tells The Times.Arturo Galansino, director of the Palazzo Strozzi, takes the
argument one step further, telling The Wall Street Journal's J.S.Marcus that the exhibition identifies
Donatello as "the inventor of the Renaissance".
Donatello's masterpieces were paired with works by Filippo Brunelleschi,Giovanni Bellini,
Michelangelo and Raphael to showcase his significant impact on generations of Italian artists."Some
exhibitions are once in a lifetime, but this show is the first time in history,"said Galansino earlier this
month.
While some people think of Michelangelo's marble David (1501-1504)as an incomparable work,
Donatello actually sculpted one of the statue's key inspirations:a bronze (David.Created likely for
the Medici family, the sculpture was conceived (independently of any architectural surroundings.
Scholars, therefore, consider Donatello's David the first of such a style in Renaissance history.
Besides,Donatello's Madonna influenced similar works by Italian Baroque painter Artemisia
Gentileschi.Just as Donatello has been relatively overlooked in favor of his contemporaries,Gentileschi
and a handful of other Renaissance women artists are just starting to get their due-a trend evidenced by a
recent exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts.
Donatello:The Renaissance follows the artist's life and work, moving through his early years in his
native city and a long-term residency in Padua.By the end of his life,Donatello's work was primarily
financed by the powerful Medici family.
1.What does the new exhibition intend to do?
A.Restress Leonardo da Vinci's achievements.
B.Retell the stories of artists in the Renaissance.
C.Rediscover Italian art in the contemporary context.
D.Rethink the key role Donatello played in his time.
2.What does Galansino think of the exhibition?
A.It is historically significant.
B.It has met with lots of criticism.
C.It is more inclusive than others.
D.It has presented a completely new art form.
3.What can be inferred about the bronze David?
A.It disappointed the Medici family.
B.It was a copy of the marble David.
C.It was created two hundred years ago.
D.It inspired Michelangelo to some extent.
4.What does the underlined phrase "get their due"in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Fall into disfavor.
B.Receive recognition.
C.Reshape their styles.
D.Suffer discrimination.
