Elysia Berman remembers the moment she realized her shopping was out of control.Last December,
she ducked into a store to buy a pair of gloves. And she came out with a $600 coat she didn't need and
couldn't afford."That was my breaking point,"she recalls.
Berman,35,knew she had an unhealthy relationship with shopping. So she decided to do something.
She'd ury the no-buy challenge,a popular social media experiment that encourages people to buy less stuff.
For a set time period-in her case,a whole year-she'd stop spending money on non-essential items.
Instead, she'd use what she had and buy second hand.
The challenge is harder than it seems.Berman, who is documenting her no-buy journey on TikTok,
had to break her habit of buying 10 to 30 new items a week. And as a fashion industry professional, she
was surrounded by the temptation to shop.
Months into the challenge,Berman says that her no-buy journey has helped her consume more
mindfully, saved tens of thousands of dollars, paid down a quarter of her debt, and improved her mental

My dad has never been a gourmet (cook. When the rare time called for him to prepare a
meal, his menu was always the same.If it was before noon,we had pancakes and eggs.If it was after
noon,we had fried potatoes and hamburgers. Then,by chance,my dad was introduced to the world of
gourmet cuisine.
After preparing three meals a day for years,my mom suddenly fell in love with TV food shows. She
watched them for hours and seemed unaware of one unexpected viewer sitting beside her...my dad.
Dad admired the cooks on the shows. One day he said he was going to make braised ribs(红烧肋排)
like the ones Bobby Flay prepared on his show.He explained he didn't have the recipe Bobby had used,
but had found a similar one from a cookbook. He said lots of the ingredients were right there in the
kitchen.If not,he could“make them”.
When Dad gets an idea,it's best to get out of the way.So my mom and I left him to his rib project
and went shopping.
When we returned a few hours later,we saw every pot and pan in the kitchen was somewhere on a
counter or table and they were all used.Every spice bottle was open and lying around in disorder.Bowls,
cookie sheets, measuring cups and spoons were all covered in some strange red-brown sauce...and in the
middle of it all was my smiling dad, sitting at the table with a plate of some sort of meat on bones.
My dad pulled out chairs and filled our plates with his creation and he couldn't hide his satisfaction with it.
Despite the flavorful smell, what he placed in front of us didn't look fit for humans to eat.But
something unexpected happened when the first bite hit our tongues.Just like the cooks always promise,
"layers of flavor"were uncovered at every bite.
My dad was beyond proud."I'll see what Bobby Flay is up to tomorrow and give it a try,"he said.
