High above the city stood the Happy Prince’s statue (雕像), covered in gold leaves, with sapphire eyes and a ruby on his sword. He was admired by all, but once night fell, he wept at the misery (苦难) he saw below. A little swallow, on its way to Egypt, decided to rest at his feet.

The Mayor had the shabby statue melted, but the broken heart wouldn’t melt and was thrown with the swallow. That night, an angel took both to God. “They were the city’s most precious things,” God said. He let the swallow sing in paradise and the Prince live in the golden city.
