For years, Lee Kyong Min’s life was about taking her two daughters from school to cram schools and then home. Almost every parent she knew did the same. Their goal was the same: to make sure their children could get into the best universities in South Korea.
The most important choice was about the hagwons, or private cram schools. In these schools, students take extra classes in subjects like math, Korean, and English. They do this to prepare for South Korea’s very difficult college entrance exam. Ms. Lee and her husband tried to find the best hagwons for their children.
Seven days a week, Ms. Lee waited for her daughters late at night in cafes. The cafes were full of other waiting parents. Sometimes, she saw very young children with schedules so busy that they had to do their homework and eat dinner in the cafes before running to their next class.
This kind of extra education is everywhere in South Korea. It became common in the 1990s when the country needed more people with university degrees for office jobs. But now, many people in South Korea worry about this system. They think the competition to get good grades is too much. Many parents want to know if there is another way.
Ms. Lee always told her daughters that studying hard was necessary. She said good grades meant more opportunities, and opportunities meant a happy life. But she started to doubt this when her older daughter, who was about 8 years old, asked her, “Mom, were you a bad student?” Ms. Lee understood that her daughter thought she was not happy. This made her very sad.
Now, Ms. Lee and many other parents in South Korea are asking themselves: What kind of life and happiness are we showing our children? Today, 80% of school-aged students in South Korea go to some kind of private extra class. Even though there are fewer children, the business of these classes grew to a record $20.3 billion in 2024.
Children are starting to go to cram schools at a younger age. In some parts of Seoul, even 4-year-old children take tests to get into English preschools. Some children start preparing for medical school in elementary school.
These new situations worry many people. Even in South Korea, a country used to hard study competition, people are alarmed. South Korea’s human rights commission said that giving such important tests to very young children is not right.
Some lawmakers say hagwons are causing mental health problems for young people. They say they will try to change things. But as Ms. Lee found out, changing this system is not easy.
18.What is the main goal of most parents sending their children to hagwons?

C.To prepare their children for the college entrance exam.

B.Her older daughter asked if she was a bad student.

20.What is a new, worrying trend mentioned in the passage?
A.Hagwons are becoming cheaper.
B.Parents are no longer waiting for their children in cafes.
C.Fewer students are going to university.

21.What is the main problem that the hagwon system is causing, according to the passage?

These new situations worry many people. Even in South Korea, a country used to hard study competition, people are alarmed. South Korea’s human rights commission said that giving such important tests to very young children is not right.

Miss Martha Meacham kept the little bakery on the corner. At forty, she had two false teeth and a sympathetic (同情的) heart. She has two thousand dollars in the bank. Many people, who were not as good as Miss Martha, had married.
A customer came in two or three times a week, and soon Miss Martha began to take an interest in him. Once, while serving him, Miss Martha saw a red and brown mark (污点) on the customer’s fingers. ③ She was sure then that he was an artist and very poor. No doubt he lived in an attic (阁楼), where he painted pictures, ate stale bread and thought of the good things to eat in Miss Martha’s bakery. ④

He was a quiet, middle-aged man, wearing glasses and a brown beard. ① His clothes were always old and patched. But he looked tidy and had very good manners. He always bought two loaves of stale bread. Fresh bread was five cents a loaf, while stale loaves were two for five. ②
Miss Martha’s heart was a sympathetic one. To check if she was right about his job, she took a painting from her room and put it behind the bread counter (柜台). No artist could fail to notice it. Two days later, the customer came in.
“Two loaves of stale bread, if you please.”
“You have here a fine picture, madam,” he said while she was packing the bread.
“Yes?” said Miss Martha, pleased with her cleverness. “Do you think it is a good picture?”
“The palace,” said the customer, “is not in good drawing. The perspective (透视画法) of it is not true. Goodbye, madam.”
He took his bread, bowed and hurried out.
Yes, he must be an artist. How gently and kindly his eyes shone behind his glasses! To be able to judge perspective at a quick look—and to live on stale bread But talented people often have to go through difficulties before they succeed.
What a thing it would be for art and perspective if genius were supported by two thousand dollars in the bank, a bakery and a sympathetic heart—But these were daydreams.
Now, when he came, he would often chat for a while with Miss Martha. He kept on buying stale bread, never a cake, never a pie. She thought he began to look thinner and lost heart. She wanted to offer something good to him, but she was afraid of hurting him. She knew the pride (骄傲) of artists. (To be continued)
