She ___3___ a hand smoothing her hair and looked up. “Why don’t you come outside with me, Ally?” her mother asked. “The birds are nesting(筑巢) in the woods. I bet if we search really hard, Ally, we’ll see this little guy together someday.” Ally closed her eyes. She loved thinking about the times she and Dad had spent searching the woods for the little bird. They’d ___10___ seen the warbler, but her father had an amazing way of making each outing seem special. The master, in his cook's uniform, stood at the table; his poor helpers were behind him; the gruel (稀粥) was served out; and after they spoke to God to give thanks, there was little time left to eat. The gruel disappeared in no time; the boys whispered to each other, and encouraged Oliver to ask for more. Oliver was very hungry and decided to take a risk. He rose from the table, and went to the master, plate and spoon in hand, said: “Please, sir. I want some more." _________①_________ The master was a fat, healthy man, but his face became very pale. He looked at the small boy in great surprise for some seconds, and nearly fell but for the support to the table. The helpers were frozen with wonder; the boys with fear. “What!" said the master at last, in a weak voice. “Please, sir," replied Oliver,“I want some more." The master hit Oliver's head with the ladle (长勺) and screamed for Mr. Bumble. ② Some people were sitting in talking about something, when Mr. Bumble rushed into the room in great excitement, and spoke directly to the gentleman in the high chair, said: “Mr. Limbkins, I beg your pardon, sir! Oliver Twist has asked for more!" ③ “For more!" said Mr. Limbkins.“Calm yourself, Bumble, and answer me clearly. Do I understand that he asked for more, after he had eaten the supper which was offered?” “He did, sir," replied Bumble. "That boy will be hanged," said the gentleman in white. "I know that boy will be hanged." Nobody was against the gentleman's idea. A heated discussion took place. Oliver was locked in a cold dark room and no boys were allowed to talk to him. The next morning a notice was put up on the outside of the gate, offering a reward of five pounds to anybody who would employ (雇佣) Oliver Twist. In other words, five pounds and Oliver Twist were offered to any man or woman who wanted an apprentice (学徒) to any trade or business. ④ “I never was more sure of anything in my life," said the gentleman in white, as he knocked at the gate and read the notice the next morning. I was in his office, sitting on a chair across from his desk. “Kids get expelled (开除) for this kind of thing, Jack! I don’t want that to happen, but you have to explain yourself.” “This is so not like you, Jack,” said Mom, She had come from work as soon as they had called her. I could tell she was really mad and surprised. “I thought you and Julian were friends,” said Mr. Tushman. “We’re not friends.” I said. “But to hit someone in the mouth?” said Mom, raising her voice. “Julian’s mouth was bleeding (流血),” said Mr. Tushman. “You knocked out a tooth, did you know that?” “It was just a baby tooth.” I said. “That’s what Nurse Molly said!” “You’re missing the point!” Mom yelled. “I just want to know why,” said Mr. Tushman. “It’ll just make everything worse,” I sighed. If I told him Julian had called August a freak (怪胎) then he’d go talk to Julian about it, then Julian would tell him how I had badmouthed August, too, and everybody would find out about it. “Jack,” Mr. Tushman said, “I don’t really know what to say here. I mean, you hit a kid. We have rules about that kind of thing, you know? Being expelled.” I started to cry. “I’m sorry... Am I being suspended (停学)?” I sniffled. “Well,” he said, “technically yes, but it’s only for a couple of days. While you’re at home you take the time to think about what’s happened. And if you want to write me a letter explaining what happened, and a letter to Julian apologizing (道歉), then we won’t put any of this in your record, OK?” “That sounds like a good plan,’’ said Mom, nodding. “Thank you.” “Everything is going to be OK,” said Mr. Tushman, walking over to the door, which was closed. “I know you’re a nice kid, Jack. Sometimes even nice kids do stupid things, right?” He opened the door. “Thank you for being so understanding,” said Mom. “Jack,” he said to me, putting his hands on my shoulders. “Think about what you’ve done, OK?” I wiped my nose with my sleeve and started walking out the door. “Say thank you to Mr. Tushman,” said Mom, tapping my shoulder. I stopped and turned around, but I couldn’t look at him. “Thank you, Mr. Tushman,” I said. “Bye, Jack,” he answered. Tetris is such a form of entertainment that shows no signs of stopping up to now. Tetris is played in what’s called a Matrix – an empty rectangle on a screen. Shapes (each is made up of four equal squares), called Tetriminos, fall into the Matrix. It’s the player’s job to place each Tetrimino so that it forms an unbroken horizontalline (水平线) with other shapes. A Tetromino can be spun or moved horizontally, but can’t be flipped (翻折). When a straight line is formed, the squares in the line disappear and the player will be rewarded. The game ends when the Tetriminos pile up and reach the top of the Matrix. It becomes difficult because the shapes fall faster the longer you play. Tetris is one of the best-selling video games of all time. Have you ever wondered who invented it? The game was created by a Russian computer engineer named Alexey Pajitnov in 1984. He was inspired (启发) by his favorite board game Pentominos and he designed the game just for fun. The game became popular almost as soon as it hit the market. In 1996, Pajitnov set up the Tetris Company. When it started as a basic computer game, Tetris quickly spread to other platforms. It was one of the most often played games on Nintendo’s Game Boy. Tetris was also the first video game played in space. In 1993, Russian Aleksandr Serebrov played the game on his Game Boy while he was on a rocket. Since then, Tetris has been one of the most popular games among kids and adults alike. Tetris may be quite fun. ①In a 2009 study, kids played Tetris daily for about 30 minutes over the course of three months. ②The game has also been used to help treat PTSD patients. ③This led to growth in parts of their brains. ④But it’s also been shown to have an active influence on the brain. Many people enjoy playing Tetris, but some have a difficult time putting the game down. They spend so much time playing Tetris that they see Tetriminos falling in their dreams. Some even report hallucinations (幻觉). This is called the “Tetris Effect”. Since it has certain side effect, just make sure you play with adults’ allowance! 8.According to the passage, which of the following can be an S-Tetrimino? A. B. C.
