Many people wonder what animals are thinking in their minds. It’s not easy to know the answer. Christine Dahlin, a biology expert, says animal communication is just them showing their feelings or thoughts directly. She is very interested in parrots. They can copy human speech surprisingly well and are good at communicating. But no one knows how this ability works in their wild lives.
Dahlin studied yellow-naped amazons, a type of yellow-green parrot living in Central America, and focused on their special sounds called “warble duets (啭鸣二重唱)”. These parrots like to live with each other and even have different local sounds. They are now in great danger, mostly because people catch them to keep as pets and it harms their lives.
To most people, these parrots’ songs sound like a mess. But Dahlin and her team found that the duets have 36 different call types. This means the parrots have a large vocabulary! More interestingly, the calls are not random (随意的). They follow certain rules. Some calls are always used together, just like human word pairs such as “grass and green”. The songs follow these rules but also have many changes. This study shows parrots’ natural communication in the wild is also very great.
Dahlin hopes this research can make people see how special these parrots are and why we should save them. It’s very important to let them live peacefully in nature, and people should watch and love them there instead of catching them as pets.
19. What does Christine Dahlin say about animal communication?
A. It is very easy to understand.
B. It is mainly used to find food and water.
C. It becomes weaker when animals live in groups.
D. It shows animals’ feelings or thoughts directly.
20. What did Dahlin and her team discover about the parrots’ duets?
A. They sound clear to all the people.
B. They include 36 different kinds of calls.
C. They never change once formed.
D. They are the same as human songs.
21. In which part of a magazine would you most likely find this passage?
A. Food & Cooking. B. Health & Sports.
C. Nature & Science. D. Travel & Adventure.
C
Listening to music can make you feel less sick when in a moving car, according to new research, but it depends on the type of music you play.
Motion sickness (运动晕眩症) is feeling sick or even makes you want to vomit (呕吐). It often happens when you’re traveling by car, boat, plane, train or other transportation. Almost everyone gets motion sickness if the movement is strong enough. Children between the ages of 2 and 12 are most likely to get it.
People get motion sickness because their senses send different messages to their brains. In a moving car, for example, your eyes tell your brain you’re moving, but your inner ear (which helps with balance) tells your brain you’re sitting still. This conflict (矛盾) can make you feel ill. If you’re reading a book or looking at a screen, stop it.
Led by brain expert Li Yilun, the team chose 30 volunteers to take part in the study. The results showed that joyful music was better at reducing motion sickness problems than anything else. Soft music was a close second, followed by loud music. However, sad music actually slowed down people’s getting better. Even people, who didn’t listen to any music felt better sooner than those who listened to sad music.
Some people believe that eating ginger will help them ward off vomiting. Although research hasn’t proved that it works, if it makes you feel better, keep using it. Motion sickness is unpleasant, but it will go away when you stop moving.
22. Which group is most likely to experience motion sickness according to the passage?
A. Adults over 50. B. Babies under 1 year old.
C. Children between 2 and 12. D. Teenagers aged between 15 and 18.
23. What can we infer about people who listen to sad music during travel?
A. They may feel more relaxed and calmer.
B. They may take longer to feel better after travel.
C. They may never experience motion sickness.
D. They may recover from sickness more quickly.
24. The underlined words “ward off” probably mean “________” in the last paragraph.
A. avoid B. cause C. increase D. notice
25. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Avoid Traveling by Car
B. The Best Food for Motion Sickness
C. Why Children Get Motion Sickness Easily
D. Music and Motion Sickness: A New Discovery

Have you ever felt discouraged (泄气的) by a big goal, like learning a new language or getting better at a sport? ____26____ However, experts suggest that paying attention to “small wins” can make a big difference.
____27____ For example, learning five new words today, running for one more minute than yesterday, or finally understanding a difficult math problem—all these are small wins. They might seem unimportant alone, but together they create the way to success.
Celebrating these small victories is very important for our brains. Each time we recognize a small win, our brain produces a chemical (化学物质) that makes us feel happy and proud. ____28____ It builds our confidence and helps us believe that we can improve through effort.
On the other hand, if we only focus on the faraway final goal, we can feel stressed and want to give up when progress is slow. Recording small wins helps us see that we are moving forward, even if the steps are small. ____29____ So, how can you use this power? ____30____ At the end of each day or week, take a moment to write down or think about what you have achieved, no matter how small it seems. By doing this, you will stay positive and discover that every small step truly matters.
A. This positive feeling gives us energy to keep going.
B. Start by breaking your big goal into small, clear steps.
C. The final success seems so far away that it’s easy to lose heart.

make noises“发出噪音”、make tests“做测试”、make records“做记录”均与上下文无关。
“to take my first step by myself”表明作者不敢独自行动,原因是害怕。
后文“even though I might fail”表明作者接受失败的可能性,take the risk of doing sth.
作者总是问“What should I do?”,期望得到回答,have the answer to 表示“有……的答案”。research“研究”、magic“魔法”、interview“面试”均不能与 to 构成此搭配。
【14题详解】
句意:现在,我每天都抓住这些小小的机会。
后文举例“我在课堂讨论中分享想法”,这是主动尝试的行为。take chances 表示“抓住机会”,符合语境。trades“交易”、surveys“调查”、problems“问题”均不符合。

C 23. B 24. A 25. D

D. A small win is any tiny progress you make toward your goal.
