The qipao, also known as cheongsam, is a traditional Chinese dress that has won the hearts of people around the world. Its beautiful look was shaped by many different cultures, including Manchu, Mongolian, Han and later Western styles.
The story of the qipao began in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). At that time, the Manchu people were called “Qi people” by the Han Chinese. So the long dress worn by Manchu women got the name “qipao”. The early qipao was very different from what we see today. It was wide and loose (宽松的), covering most of a woman’s body. Only the head, hands and feet could be seen. Made of silk with beautiful embroidery (刺绣), it was a true work of art.
In the 1920s, Shanghai became the center of qipao fashion. An exciting change happened—girl students started wearing qipao. This was a big step. At first, these dresses were simple and loose, similar to men’s robes (长袍). By wearing this “battle (战斗) dress”, young women showed that they wanted to be equal to men and stand up for their own independence.
Later, the Shanghai-style qipao began to mix Chinese traditions with Western fashion. It became more close-fitting to show a woman’s body shape with high slits (开衩) on both sides. In 1929, it was even named one of the official national dresses.
Thanks to its beauty, the qipao helped Shanghai win the name “Oriental Paris” in the 1930s. The fashion quickly spread across the country. Today, people still wear qipaos on special occasions like weddings and parties. It has also become a uniform in some Asian restaurants, hotels and even on airplanes.
24. What was the early qipao like during the Qing Dynasty?

D. In a race, all runners should have an equal chance to win.
26. When was the qipao named one of the official national dresses?
A. In 1644. B. In the 1920s. C. In 1929. D. In the 1930s.
27. What is the best title for the passage?
A. More Than a Dress B. Fashion in Shanghai C. Art in a Qipao D. The Story of Silk

Scene One
When Chase went back to school, everyone acted strangely around him. Some kids looked scared. Others avoided him.
A boy named Aaron walked up. “Chase! You’re back! We were about to pull a great prank (恶作剧). You’ll love it.”
Chase looked confused. “A prank? What kind?”
“You’ll see,” Aaron said. “It’ll be funny.”
But Chase felt uncomfortable. He didn’t want to hurt anyone. He turned and walked away.
“Wait! Where are you going?” Aaron shouted.

At lunch, a girl named Shoshanna sat next to him.
“I don’t know if you’re still the same person,” she said seriously.

The new kid stopped just in time. The bucket stayed where it was.
Aaron threw the bucket down angrily. “You’re not Chase anymore! You’re nobody!”

“You’re actually pretty good at this,” Brendan said, surprised.
Chase smiled a little. “It feels... right.”
At that moment, Shoshanna walked by and saw them. She didn’t say anything, but she gave Chase a small nod.

“Turn on the light.” You say this to a smart speaker. But what if you could just think about it, and the light turns on? This is not science fiction. It’s called Brain-Computer Interface (BCI), and it’s changing the world.
BCI is a technology that helps the brain and machines “talk” directly. It reads the brain’s electrical signals (信号), uses AI to understand them, and then turns them into orders. For example, a person can move a robotic arm or type a message just by thinking.
Recently, scientists in Shanghai made a big step forward. They worked with ten epilepsy (癫痫) patients who had brain implants (植入物). The patients read 54 Chinese words aloud while machines recorded their brain activity. Then, an AI model learned to match each word with its special brain signal pattern (模式). After just 100 minutes of training, the system could turn the patients’ thoughts into words on a screen!
This is great news for people who cannot speak because of illnesses like ALS. Understanding Chinese through brain signals is harder than English. English has about 50 basic sounds, but Chinese has over 400 sound combinations (结合). The Shanghai team solved this problem by building a large brain signal database (数据库). The chart (表格) below shows how well their system learned:
What the system did
Numbers
Characters learned
54
Words understood after learning
1,951
Time to make a sentence
Less than 0.5 seconds
After learning only 54 characters words, the system could understand 1,951 common words! Professor Li said, “This turns thoughts into text right and fast.” However, BCI still faces problems. The brain is very complex (复杂的). Reading clear signals sometimes needs small electrodes (电极) to be put in, and this can be dangerous. There are also big questions about privacy: if machines can read our thoughts, who can see them?
In the future, BCI might help us control machines with our mind, play games in virtual (虚拟的) worlds, or even create artwork from imagination. The journey has just begun. Stay curious!
32. How does the writer start the passage?
A. By listing facts. B. By telling a story.
C. By giving an example. D. By showing a survey.
33. What can we learn from the chart?
A. The system learned many more characters than words.
B. The system needs more than one second to make a sentence.
C. The more time it takes, the more words the system can understand.
D. The system can understand more words than the characters it learned.
34. According to Paragraph 5, what is the problem BCI faces?
①The brain is very complex.
②It takes too long to make sentences.
③Putting in electrodes can be dangerous.
④There are worries about privacy.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
35. Who needs BCI technology most according to the passage?
A. Anna, who wants to turn on the TV without using the remote (遥控器).
B. Bob, who is badly ill and cannot speak or move his arms.
C. Frank, who likes talking to his smart phone to send messages.
D. Cindy, who hopes to listen to English songs without using her phone.

Good news for primary and secondary school students in Chongqing: You may get more holidays! This year, Chongqing has introduced a new spring break for primary and junior high school students (Senior high school students are not included). The spring break lasts 2 days and connects with Tomb-Sweeping Day to make a 5-day holiday. It aims to reduce students’ stress and help them develop in a more balanced way. Here are the survey results and comments (评论) about it:
Mr. Li, a headmaster of a school
Spring and autumn holidays will give students more time to rest and relax during the stressful and busy term. For their healthy growth and development, they can spare some time to enjoy our beautiful country. After the short rest, they will be more energetic, which is very beneficial for their study. In this way, students can keep a good balance between study and life.
Ms. Zhang, a secondary school teacher
I strongly support this new policy. As a teacher, I believe health is more important than scores. Outdoor activities can help students relax themselves and connect textbook knowledge with real life. It is also good for their all-round development. During the break, students can learn a lot from nature and traditional culture. They will become more active and creative.
Mrs. Huang, a parent of a secondary school student
I really welcome the spring break. It’s a great time for family trips. I plan to take my child to Wulong Karst (武隆喀斯特景区) to enjoy the beautiful sights. It can not only help our child relax but also improve our family relationship. I believe this break benefits his growth as well. But I have a small worry: I’m busy with work and can’t stay with my child all the break. I’m also afraid that my child may not focus on study when he’s alone.

When life feels stressful and things are out of your control, negative thinking often appears. Feelings of sadness, disappointment and self-doubt come along. That’s why such negative thinking needs to be dealt with. However, there are many things you can do when you have negative thinking.
First, try a “No Complaining” challenge. You can decide not to complain for a whole week. If you complain at any time, you have to start counting from Day 1 again. You may be surprised to find how much time you waste on things you cannot change.
Second, stop asking “what if” questions about bad things. Instead, ask yourself, “What if everything works out well?” When you feel worried, use the same energy to think about good results.
Third, follow the 10-Second Rule. When a negative thought comes to your mind, take 10 seconds to decide whether you should care about it. Ask yourself: Is this thought helpful? Can I do anything about it right now? If not, just let it go.
Finally, stop imagining terrible things in your mind. If you always think about the worst situations, you will only expect disappointment. Instead, try to imagine that things will go well.
It is not easy to change your way of thinking. But if you put in time and keep practicing, you can surely make progress. Be patient and kind to yourself!
Summary

A. B. C. D.
25. Which sentence uses “equal” with the same meaning as the underlined word?
equal /’i:kwəl/ adj. ①平等的 ②相等的 ③胜任的 ④相当的
A. His voice was equal to the situation, calm and confident.
B. The two pieces of cake are equal in size.
C. She worked hard to prove she was equal to the task.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. C 27. A

文中“equal”出现在第三段“they wanted to be equal to men”,意为“平等的”。选项D“all runners should have an equal chance to win”中的“equal”同样表示“平等的”。选项A意为“胜任的”,选项B意为“相等的”,选项C意为“胜任的”。故选D。
【26题详解】
根据第四段“In 1929, it was even named one of the official national dresses.”可知,时间为1929年。故选C。
【27题详解】
全文不仅介绍了旗袍的外观和工艺,更讲述了其背后承载的文化融合、女性独立意识及国际影响力,远超一件衣服的范畴。选项A“More Than a Dress”(不止是一件衣服)准确概括了这一主旨。选项B“Fashion in Shanghai”过于片面,选项C“Art in a Qipao”仅强调艺术性,选项D“The Story of Silk”偏离主题。故选A。

【答案】32. C 33. D 34. C 35. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要介绍了脑机接口(BCI)技术的原理、研究进展、应用价值、面临的问题与未来发展方向。
【32题详解】
根据第一段“‘Turn on the light.’ You say this to a smart speaker. But what if you could just think about it, and the light turns on?”可知,作者通过举开灯的例子引出脑机接口技术。
【33题详解】
根据表格“After learning only 54 characters words, the system could understand 1,951 common words!”可知,说明系统学习的字符数远少于能理解的单词数,即系统能理解的单词比学习的字符多。
【34题详解】
第五段“The brain is very complex. Reading clear signals sometimes needs small electrodes to be put in, and this can be dangerous. There are also big questions about privacy: if machines can read our thoughts, who can see them?”,BCI面临的问题包括:①大脑非常复杂;③植入电极有危险;④隐私方面的担忧;文中未提及造句子耗时过长的问题。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“This is great news for people who cannot speak because of illnesses like ALS.”,说明BCI技术最适合因疾病无法说话、无法活动身体的人,对应Bob的情况。
