第四部分写作(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(满分15分)
Possible version 1:
I'm happy to declare our position on behalf ofour team.We firmly believe that Zheng He was the
greater explorer.
For one thing,Zheng He made seven grand voyages decades before Columbus, making him a true
pioneer in the history of exploration, not to mention his larger by far fleet. For another,Zheng He's
efforts helped develop and strengthen the relationships between China and its neighbors, promoting
mutual understanding and cultural exchanges. In contrast,Columbus's so-called"discovery"'was rather
an invitation to the suffering of indigenous peoples.
To conclude, with his accomplishments widely acknowledged, there is no arguing that Zheng He
was the great explorer.(95)
Possible version 2:
I'm happy to declare our position on behalf of our team.We firmly believe that Christopher
Columbus was the greater explorer.
Unlike Zheng He,Columbus drew on quite fewer resources but rose to many more challenges.
Also,Columbus's sailing into the unknown demonstrated extraordinary determination, putting Zheng
He's in the shade. That's why we think Columbus was more of an explorer.Additionally,in terms of
contributions to the world,Columbus's voyages directly paved the way for other explorers, opening a
new chapter of the Age of Exploration.
Therefore, based on his remarkable adventures and his lasting global impact,we argue that
Columbus was the greater explorer.(95)
第二节(满分25分)
Possible version:
Mrs Brown opened the door with a surprised look. She hesitated for a moment before inviting us
in.As Lucas handed her the cookies,Mrs Brown's eyes lit up.Her happy husband gave Lucas a pat on
the head. While the Browns were trying the cookies,I apologized again for the trouble Lucas had
caused. There was an awkward silence but it soon gave way to a heart-to-heart talk.Lucas listened
quietly.I was convinced that he had realized the impact of his drumming on our neighbors.(78)
Eventually,we agreed on a new schedule for drum practice.Lucas would practice from 7 pm to 8
pm,when Mrs Brown was already on the night shift and Mr Brown could take a break from writing."I
will be enjoying Lucas's music,"Mr Brown said jokingly.A friendly atmosphere dominated the
apartment, lifting the tension that had hung over us for days.As we turned back from the Browns,I
pointed to the walls between the two families, saying that they were thin again.Lucas smiled toothily

Some scientists insist that once we discover the truth about the world, we are done. Anyone who denies such truths, they suggest, is stupid or ignorant. Well, no.
In science, what we do is both hard and, often, hard to explain. The history of science offers many examples of matters that scientists thought they had resolved, only to discover that these matters needed to be reconsidered. Familiar examples include Earth as the center of the universe and the stability of continents.
Science is a process of learning and discovery, and sometimes we learn that what we thought was right is wrong. To say that science is “true” or “permanent” is like saying that “beauty is absolute”. At best, it’s a bit off - key. The concept of beauty today is very different from what it was in ancient Greece or the Middle Ages, and so are most of our “laws” of nature.
Other scientists may say scientific findings are true because they use “the scientific method”. But we can never actually agree on what that method is. Some will say it is observation and description of the world. Others will say it is the use of experience and experiment. Recently a leading scientist said the scientific method was to avoid fooling oneself into thinking something is true that is not.
Each of these views has its value, but if the claim is that any one of these is the scientific method, then they all fail. History and philosophy have shown that the idea of a singular scientific method is unscientific. In fact, the methods of science have varied between disciplines and across time. Scientists have bitterly argued about which methods are the best, and, as we all know, bitter arguments rarely get resolved.
In my view, science is not simple, and neither is the natural world. Our efforts to understand and explain the natural world are just that: efforts.
Because we’re human, we often fall flat. The good news is that when that happens, we pick ourselves up, brush ourselves off, and get back to work. Understanding the world we live in, and using that knowledge to do useful things, is its own reward.
24. According to paragraph 1, what is considered as truth in science ___.
A. may have lasting value B. may need re–examining
C. should be known to all D. should not be rejected
25. Why does the author mention “beauty” in paragraph 3?
A. To raise a question. B. To make a prediction.
C. To illustrate an idea. D. To propose a solution.
26. What does the author think of the methods of science?
A. They shouldn’t be used to fool the public.
B. They rely heavily on observation and description.
C. They seldom cause arguments among scientists.
D. They shouldn’t be limited to a single method.
27. What could be the best title for the passage?
A. Efforts in Science: Dreaming Big B. Science: Endless Journey to Truth
C. Scientists: Defenders of Science D. Scientific Method: Simple Choice

In the deepest and coldest parts of the ocean, sea creatures—mainly animals without backbones—can grow to sizes that dwarf (使显得矮小) related species around the world. The phenomenon is called gigantism (巨大畸形). But what is it about deep ocean waters that causes it?
In the deepest parts of the ocean, resources are severely limited. Much of the food originates in shallower waters and only a small part of that goes down to the sea depths. When food is not enough, being bigger provides a huge advantage, according to Alicia Bitondo, an expert who studies deep-sea species. “Larger animals can move faster and farther to find food. They have more efficient metabolism (新陈代谢) and are better at storing food. So when something gets down to deeper waters, big animals can consume more and store that energy for a longer time,” Bitondo said.
The cold temperature in the deep sea can also fuel gigantism by significantly slowing down animals’ metabolism. Near Antarctica, gigantism happens closer to the surface. In these polar waters, the oxygen concentration is high, but animals in these environments use oxygen very slowly because cold water temperatures reduce their metabolic rates, ecophysiologist Art Woods explained. Because the rich oxygen supply is far more than the animal’s oxygen demand, it’s possible that growth restrictions are lifted.
But even for polar giants, there seems to be a limit to how big they can grow. In a study, Woods and his teammates studied giant arctic sea spiders (蜘蛛), which can grow to be 30.5 centimeters long. The team found that larger sea spiders had lower oxygen levels in their bodies. Aerobic (有氧的) metabolism depends on oxygen levels in the body, and if it gets too low, tissues will suffer from a lack of oxygen. The declining oxygen level in large sea spiders suggests that something is shifting in the balance of oxygen supply and demand, the researchers reported in the study.
While there are several theories about the different factors that can produce ocean giants, no one is certain about the precise mechanisms (机制) that drive dramatic evolutionary changes in body size. “We would say in biology that nothing is ever certain,” Woods said.
28. How do bigger animals benefit from their sizes in the deep ocean according to Alicia Bitondo?
A. They can adapt to darkness in the sea.
B. They can store energy for a longer time.
C. They can hunt for food in shallow waters easily.
D. They can experience reduced resistance when swimming.
29. How does the cold temperature influence sea creatures near Antarctica?
A. It leads to slow growth.
B. It speeds up their metabolic rates.
C. It makes gigantism a rare occurrence.
D. It slows down their oxygen consumption.
30. What did the researchers find out about giant arctic sea spiders?
A. Their size is influenced by the oxygen level in their body.
B. They have a higher oxygen demand than normal spiders.
C. The oxygen levels in large sea spiders decline annually.
D. Their survival mainly depends on their oxygen levels.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The effects of cold temperatures on deep-sea gigantism.
B. The limitations and potential risks of gigantism in polar waters.
C. The uncertain mechanisms behind evolutionary changes in body size.
D. The probable factors contributing to the large size of deep-sea creatures.

Have you ever had to shout to call your family to the dinner table? It turns out that humans aren’t the only creatures that need to find creative ways to tell their loved ones about a meal on the table.
Professor Benjamin Taylor at LaGuardia Community College found wasps (黄蜂) have their own ways of communicating with each other about mealtime. Professor Taylor and his team studied a behavior exhibited by wasps called gastral drumming (腹部鼓动). When workers produce the behavior, they drum their gaster against different parts of the nest, producing distinct sounds.
“For nearly five decades, researchers thought gastral drumming was a signal of hunger. My team and I showed that wasps are actually informing each other through this behavior that there’s good food nearby,” said Professor Taylor. “Our findings are really exciting because they provide the first evidence that wasps have complex food communication, just like ants, bees, and other social insects.”
The study focuses on a species of wasps called the German yellow jacket. “These wasps often show up at picnics and ball games—anywhere food can be found. German yellow jackets are notorious (臭名昭著的) for aggressively defending their nests,” said Professor Taylor. “Anyone who has stepped on one won’t soon forget it. However, when they sting (蜇), it’s most often to defend themselves or other members of the group.”
German yellow jacket wasps are vital parts of ecosystems and are main pollinators (传粉者) for plants. Many wasp researchers have been trying to get others to reassess their importance in this regard. There’s also a hashtag (话题标签) used on social media to try to get people to understand their importance.
Professor Taylor and his team are currently testing additional theories about the function of gastral drumming. Because of the significant variation in how the wasps produce the behavior, they’re examining whether this variation means the quality of the food in addition to the fact that there’s food available.
“There’s a lot that we can learn from social insects. For one, they’re known for being incredibly efficient, so much so that shipping companies use models which have been inspired by ants to try and ship their goods as efficiently as they possibly can. So, if your package arrives faster, you probably have a social insect to thank for that,” said Professor Taylor.
32. What is the function of wasps’ gastral drumming?
A. To relieve hunger. B. To pollinate plants.
C. To defend their nests. D. To inform other members of food.
33. Why is the hashtag used on social media?
A. To raise awareness of wasps’ importance to the ecosystem.
B. To correct wasps’ bad reputation for harmful stings.
C. To share pictures of wasps in their natural habitats.
D. To encourage researchers to study wasps.
34. What will Professor Taylor’s later research into wasps focus on?
A. Their various defense mechanisms.
B. The types of foods they prefer to eat.
C. Different meanings of their gastral drumming sounds.
D. The ways that they help with the pollination of plants.
35. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The highly efficient work of social insects.
B. The rapid development of modern transportation.
C. Shipping companies’ models for delivering packages.
D. An example of social insects’ contribution to mankind.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Temptation (诱惑) is when you have a strong desire to do something even though you know you should not. For example, you might feel tempted to do something that is unhealthy for your body. 36
For example, you can distract (转移) yourself with a healthier activity. Distraction is a great way to avoid temptation because it shifts your thoughts to something else. 37 Let’s say you’re tempted to eat a second slice of dessert, even though you know it’s unhealthy. You might distract yourself by enjoying your hobby or calling a friend.
38 When you feel tempted, you can think about these questions, like what will your life look like in the long run? Or how will you feel tomorrow? 39 For example, you might be at a party where you’re tempted to drink or smoke. Consider what could happen if your school found out.
Know your temptation so you can overcome it. Denying a desire will only make it worse because you won’t be able to stop thinking about it. 40 For example, you might expect sugary snacks every afternoon when you feel an energy decrease. Tell yourself, “I really want candy right now because I’m tired. But I can get a similar boost by drinking green tea, instead.”
A. Stop buying things that really tempt you.
B. Remind yourself about the benefit of overcoming temptations.
C. Imagining what will happen if you give in to temptation also helps.
D. If you aren’t thinking about your temptation, it’s easier to say “no”.
E. Facing these results can help you resist whenever temptation arises.
F. Luckily, you can do many things to overcome temptation in the moment.
G. Think about why you feel that way, and then list other healthier ways you can satisfy your needs.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Mr. and Mrs. Brown moved into the apartment next door in early July. Initially, we exchanged polite smiles when passing by, but somehow things changed soon. Lucas, my younger son, was crazy about playing the drums (鼓). He’d been dreaming of joining the school’s music band and practiced with all his might every evening, usually from 5 pm to 6 pm. He said the loud beats helped him release stress from a day of studying. However, our thin apartment walls turned his practice sessions into a headache for the Browns.
Mrs. Brown worked night shifts at the hospital. She relied on the afternoons to sleep and recharge for the next shift, but the drumbeats would wake her up repeatedly. Mr. Brown, a freelance writer who worked from home, needed complete quiet to focus on his stories, but the constant “boom-boom-boom” would break his train of thought. We didn’t notice their trouble at first; Lucas always closed his bedroom door when practicing, and we thought that would reduce the noise to the minimum level.
One Thursday evening, Mr. Brown knocked on our door. His face looked serious, and I could tell he was upset. “I’m sorry to bother you,” he said, “but the drum noise has been making it hard for my wife to rest and me to work. We’ve tried closing the windows, but it still doesn’t help much.” My husband and I apologized immediately, but Lucas felt wronged. He argued that he only practiced for an hour each day and had nowhere else to play. For the next few days, the atmosphere between the two families became awkward. We ceased greeting each other, and the walls seemed to grow thicker.
I decided to fix the situation. I baked a plate of chocolate cookies—Mrs. Brown’s favorite, which I learned from a casual chat before. Lucas offered to take them to the Browns. I gave him a thumbs-up and followed behind.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Mrs. Brown opened the door with a surprised look.
Eventually, we agreed on a new schedule for drum practice.
