When creative architectural minds are given free reign over their creations, some truly unique buildings are born.
Habitat 67(Montreal, Canada)
Habitat 67's unique architecture was designed by a young Canadian-Israeli immigrant named Moshe Safdie for Montreal's 1967 Universal Exposition (博览会). The building was designed to integrate the advantages of suburban living — namely privacy, gardens and multiple floors — in an urban environment.
Sagrada Familia(Barcelona, Spain)
When modernist architect Antoni Gaudi took the reins in 1883, a year after the construction began, he turned just another church into his masterpiece. Its complex designs and themes make the Sagrada Familia among the most unique architecture in the world. When it's finally finished in 2026, its iconic design will have long since been established as one of the great achievements of architecture.
Longaberger Basket Building(Newark, America)
There are plenty of buildings out there that reflect their purpose, like the Kansas City library that looks like a row of books. The Longaberger Basket Building is one of this kind. Head office of the Longaberger Company produces baskets which can be found around the world. The Longaberger founder's son wanted all the other Longaberger buildings to look like its products too.
Atomium(Brussels, Belgium)
Another example of an offbeat construction for a World's Fair, the Atomium was built for the 1958 edition of the Universal Exposition held in Brussels, Belgium by André Waterkeyn. Unlike Habitat 67, it wasn't meant to be a residential building. Instead it contains exhibition rooms and public halls. The building itself is designed to be a copy of the structure of iron crystal.
1. Which of the following building hasn't been completed by now?
A. Habitat 67. B. Sagrada Familia.
C. Longaberger Basket Building. D. Atomium.
2. What does Longaberger Basket Building look like?
A. A basket. B. A garden. C. A row of books. D. An iron crystal.

Back in 2003, Erica Hernandez was just a kid helping 20 adults take care of the beach. They overheard a plan to build a processing station for natural gas 14 miles off the coast of Oxnard. The plan would send over 200 tons of air pollution per year to Erica’s community. Not only that, the station would take in millions of gallons of seawater per day to cool its generators, and discharge the water more than 15 degrees centigrade hotter than the surrounding ocean. This hot wastewater would cause serious harm to the surrounding ecosystem, killing tiny creatures and small fish crucial to the survival of marine mammals and fisheries.
Erica cared too much to stay silent. She joined her friends in weekly protests at the office of the natural gas company. Prospects of stopping the project did not look good. The governor was in favor of it, and so were the powerful state commissions that would have to approve it. “The word on the street was that there was nothing we could do.”
Behind the scenes, however, opposition was growing, so Erica became the spokesperson for the youth of the town. She regularly walked her neighborhood along the route of the proposed pipeline, using a hula hoop to show people the size of the pipe that would pass by their houses. She talked to the media, and stories about the dangers of the proposed facility began appearing in the press. “We made thousands of phone calls and sent thousands of postcards telling the governor why this facility was a bad idea.” In July 2007, the governor made an unexpected move: He turned down the project. Erica and her friends won!
As only the second person in her family to go to college, Erica wants to become an environmental lawyer so she can fight for the environment and for the rights of communities. She wants other young people to speak out when they see something wrong, even if they feel shy about it at first. She likes to quote the words of her role model, Cesar Chavez: “We are the future. The future is ours.”
4. What can be learned about the planned processing station?
A. It would change the climate. B. It would depend on seawater to clean generators.
C. It was designed to provide local energy. D. It would do harm to local ecosystem.
5. What does “The word on the street” in paragraph 2 probably refer to?
A. The official announcement. B. The common belief among people.
C. The false news spread by the media. D. The instruction from the government.
6. Which of the following can best describe Erica?
A. Idealistic and friendly. B. Brave and determined.
C. Patient and organized. D. Creative and artistic.
7. What can we learn from Erica’s story?
A. Courage is always rewarded in the end.
B. Success relies on teamwork and cooperation.
C. Young people can make a difference if they speak up.
D. Environmental protection should come before economic development.
C
In the summer months, fireflies (萤火虫) become lively, starting their “love stories”. Male fireflies fly around and a part of their belly (腹部) will light up. Then females sitting on the ground look up at the show and flash back to the males they like. They’re not going to mate unless they’ve exchanged these light signals.
Firefly species have performed that for millions of years, lit only by the moon. Now humans are damaging their feelings, turning on street lights and LEDs at the fireflies’ summer party.
In the firefly world, it’s the females who are particularly turned off by man-made light. Owens, a researcher at Harvard University, led studies in experimental conditions and field conditions and found that male fireflies often keep flashing under street lights and other kinds of overhead light, while female fireflies, active at night, basically shut down and stop reacting.
“Probably because they just can’t see the males very well,” Owens explained. “Typically male fireflies are looking down. Female fireflies are looking up at street lights and other light sources.” In lab conditions, not one of 20 pairs mated successfully under bright lights, while about half of firefly couples mated successfully in natural dim light.
In the last decade, the night sky became twice as bright due to the increasing use of LEDs, Owens said, which hurts the populations of fireflies. Sadly, no fireflies are protected under the Endangered Species Act presently.
“I like people to think about firefly extinction (灭绝) as sitting in a room of candles, and it’s beautiful,” said Sara Lewis, a professor of biology at Tufts University. “And if one or two of those candles went out, you probably don’t even notice it, but if that continues, eventually you are left sitting in complete darkness.”
8. What is the main problem for fireflies caused by man-made light?
A. It confuses their sense of direction. B. It prevents them from finding mates.
C. It reduces their ability to produce light. D. It makes them more visible to other insects.
9. What did Owens’ lab experiment show?
A. Bright lights help fireflies find mates faster. B. Male fireflies stop flashing under bright lights.
C. Female fireflies prefer bright lights to dim light. D. No fireflies managed to mate under bright lights.
10. What does Sara Lewis mean by comparing firefly extinction to candles?
A. Fireflies need darkness to survive. B. Fireflies are as beautiful as candles.
C. Fireflies extinction happens gradually. D. Fireflies are easily destroyed as candles.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Fireflies’ Habits: A Natural Wonder B. Man-made Light: A Threat to Fireflies’ Mating
C. Fireflies’ Signals: A Mysterious Language D. Scientists’ Studies: A Key to Fireflies’ Survival
D
Every time you crowd into a packed plane, you might wonder if you will catch something from the person sitting next to you — or a few rows away. You’re not alone: researchers share that curiosity.
Erica, associate professor at Northwestern University, and her colleagues tried to find out by testing face masks worn by passengers on flights to document what kinds of bugs they trapped. The team was also interested in the air circulating in hospitals and tested face masks worn by hospital staff. They collected 53 masks for analysis.
They detected 407 total microbial (微生物) species from both the plane and hospital settings, with similar populations of bugs from each. The vast majority of these came from skin and are harmless, says Erica. She says most airborne microbes come from our skin, as we shed (使掉落) them everywhere we go.
The kits that the team used were designed to collect DNA, so that meant the researchers primarily captured bacteria — not viruses, many of which have RNA as their genetic base (like influenza). Erica says that viruses likely make up a smaller proportion of microbes in the air than bacteria, since people shed more skin bacteria than virus particles. She notes that viruses tend to heavily depend on the right habitat in order to thrive, and once outside the body and away from cells that they can infect, they can become slightly less pernicious.
The results of the study highlight the importance of developing better ways to monitor the air for disease-causing pathogens (病原体), including viruses, using sensing systems that could provide more real-time readings. “Imagine something like a gas alarm that, depending on the levels of microbes present, could automatically increase air-exchange rates or alert people to put on masks,” says Erica.
Erica hopes people will remember that the air — even in tight places like a plane or hospital — may not be as full of disease-causing bacteria as we think. Still, if you are worried about getting sick, face masks are an effective way to protect yourself from pathogens, as well as protecting you from spreading bacteria to others if you are ill.
12. Why did Erica and her colleagues carry out the study?
A. To compare bugs in different settings. B. To design a new air conditioning system.
C. To explore infection risks in specific places. D. To prove that using face masks is ineffective.
13. How did the team collect data for their research?
A. By examining DNA from skin samples. B. By tracking viruses spread among patients.
C. By checking air quality inside the airplanes. D. By testing face masks from different groups.
14. What does the underlined word “pernicious” most probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Rare. B. Harmful. C. Visible. D. Stable.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Viruses are the main microbes in the air. B. Real-time air monitoring is now widely used.
C. Shed skin spreads more bacteria than viruses. D. People needn’t overreact to the air in tight spaces.
第二节 (共5 小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
It’s easy to give in to the winter hibernation (冬眠) urge — but countless studies have shown that outdoors activity is one of the best ways to reduce your risk of anxiety, depression and seasonal affective disorder (SAD). ____16____ Here’s how to make the best use of our natural health service.
Starting small.
“Sometimes getting out and running 5km was like climbing Everest. It would take me all day just to find the energy to get out,” says Alex Staniforth, a mental health campaigner. ____17____ Try opening a window, sitting by natural light, or bringing nature indoors with plants. When you’re ready, aim for short, achievable goals like a five-minute walk. You don’t need hours. Aiming for regular activity is key.
____18____
Mental health and fitness coach Gareth Jones emphasized that good planning and structure are crucial. “If you know you’re struggling with motivation, laying out all your kit — from your socks all the way up to the food you’re going to take — can be helpful,” he says. “____19____ You might want to get out when you get to the front door — but if you have to go and search for your trainers because they’re lost under the stairs somewhere, you may not feel like going out at all.”
Group support.
Social commitments can also act as motivation for people with depression and anxiety. Having other people around us — whether that’s joining a club or committing to something with a friend — can really help. ____20____ “People are very quick to post their accomplishments on social media, but what you don’t see is the build-up,” says Gareth. “It doesn’t matter where people are now in their lives, they’ve had to work to get there. And you’ll get there too.”
A. A clear goal.
B. A structured approach.
C. However, don’t compare yourself to others.
D. A disorganized life can affect your motivation.
E. Therefore, doctors are encouraging people to go outdoors more.
F. But time in nature isn’t the only cure for mental health problems.

Ethan had always been known as the “piano guy” in his small town. From the age of seven, his fingers danced across the ivory keys, filling his home with melodies that echoed off the walls. Music was his voice, his comfort, his identity. However, everything changed when his family moved to a bustling metropolis during his senior year. Here, in a massive high school with thousands of students, Ethan became just another face in the crowd.
The first few months were brutal. In his old school, he was a big fish in a small pond. Here, he was invisible. During lunch, he sat alone, picking at his food while conversations swirled around him like a foreign language. He watched groups of friends laugh and share secrets, feeling a profound sense of loneliness. He stopped playing the piano altogether. The grand piano in his new apartment’s living room remained untouched, a silent monument to a life he felt he had lost. He threw himself into textbooks, believing that academic perfection was his only path to recognition. But the silence inside him grew louder each day.
One Friday afternoon, Ethan was packing his bag, eager to escape the crowded hallway. Suddenly, a gentle hand on his shoulder stopped him. He turned to see Mrs. Laurent, the silver-haired music teacher, her eyes twinkling behind her glasses. “Ethan, I’ve been reviewing your transfer record,” she said, her voice soft but firm. “It says here you’re a pianist. The annual school talent show is next month.” Ethan felt his cheeks flush. He shook his head, muttering an excuse about being too busy with schoolwork. Mrs. Laurent didn’t look disappointed. Instead, she smiled knowingly. “Music isn’t just about performing for others, Ethan. Sometimes, it’s about finding the parts of yourself you’ve forgotten.” She handed him a flyer for the talent show and walked away, leaving the words hanging in the air like a lingering note.
That night, Ethan lay in bed, Mrs. Laurent’s words echoing in his mind. He thought about the dusty piano in the corner of the living room. A wave of longing, mixed with fear, washed over him.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;

【答案】4. D 5. B 6. B 7. C

【答案】8. B 9. D 10. C 11. B

【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Owens, a researcher at Harvard University, led studies in experimental conditions and field conditions and found that male fireflies often keep flashing under street lights and other kinds of overhead light, while female fireflies, active at night, basically shut down and stop reacting.(哈佛大学的研究员欧文斯在实验环境和实地环境中进行了相关研究,发现雄性萤火虫在街灯和其他高架光源下常常持续闪烁,而夜间活跃的雌性萤火虫则基本停止活动并不再做出反应)”可知,人造灯光使萤火虫无法找到配偶。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“In lab conditions, not one of 20 pairs mated successfully under bright lights, while about half of firefly couples mated successfully in natural dim light.(在实验室条件下,20对萤火虫中没有一对在强光下成功交配,而约有一半的萤火虫对在自然昏暗光线下成功交配)”可知,在强光照射下,没有一只萤火虫能够成功交配。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段““I like people to think about firefly extinction (灭绝) as sitting in a room of candles, and it’s beautiful,” said Sara Lewis, a professor of biology at Tufts University. “And if one or two of those candles went out, you probably don’t even notice it, but if that continues, eventually you are left sitting in complete darkness.”(塔夫茨大学的生物学教授萨拉·利维斯说:“我希望人们能将萤火虫的灭绝想象成置身于一屋子的蜡烛之中,那是一种很美的景象。”“如果其中有一两支蜡烛熄灭了,你可能根本察觉不到,但如果这种情况持续下去,最终你就会发现自己置身于一片漆黑之中。”)”可知,萨拉·刘易斯将萤火虫的灭绝与蜡烛的消失相提并论,意思是萤火虫的灭绝是渐进式的。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Firefly species have performed that for millions of years, lit only by the moon. Now humans are damaging their feelings, turning on street lights and LED s at the fireflies’ summer party.(萤火虫种群数百万年来一直以这种方式活动,仅靠月亮的光亮照明。如今人类却在破坏它们的生存环境,纷纷开启街灯和 LED 灯,干扰了萤火虫在夏季聚会时的正常活动)”结合文章主要讲述了人造光对萤火虫的求偶和繁衍造成严重干扰,长此以往可能导致其灭绝。可知,B选项“人造光源:对萤火虫求偶行为的威胁”最符合文章标题。
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. D

注意:
(1) 续写词数应为 150 个左右;

【答案】
The next evening, drawn by an irresistible force, Ethan lifted the keyboard cover of the piano. His fingers hesitated at first, then began to move tentatively across the keys. As the familiar melodies filled the room, a warmth spread through him. The music was like an old friend, welcoming him back. He played with increasing confidence, losing himself in the rhythm. For the first time since moving, he felt truly alive.
On the night of the talent show, as he walked off the stage amidst thunderous applause, Ethan saw Mrs. Laurent waiting in the wings. She gave him a proud smile and a thumbs-up. “You did it, Ethan,” she said. “You found yourself again through music.” Ethan felt a lump in his throat. He realized that music wasn’t just about being recognized; it was about connecting with his inner self and sharing that joy with others.
