Li Haorong, a 17-year-old student from Beijing, reached the summit of Mount Qomolangma, the world’s highest peak in the Xizang autonomous region on May 25, 2025, becoming the youngest Chinese male to climb the summit from its northern slope. Beyond mountaineering, he is also keen on other sports like basketball, skiing and surfing, thus contributing to his active and open-minded way of thinking.
As a member of the Youmei Youth Mountaineering Team, the world’s first youth team to climb Qomolangma, Li began his mountaineering journey in January 2023. He said the sport has taught him valuable life lessons, the most important of which is “to have a heart of awe”. After returning to base camp, Li kowtowed (叩头) three times to Qomolangma to express his gratitude for a safe climb and for all the lessons it had taught him.
Li Jinghui, the team leader and CEO of Youmei Camp, said the journey took 46 days. After arriving at base camp, the team carried out progressive high-altitude adaptive training, climbing from 5,200 meters to 7,028 meters at Camp1. “This strict training involved walking through real snow and ice environments, practicing crevasse (冰缝) crossing and other high-altitude skills,” he said.
Lobsang Dondrub, an experienced mountaineering guide, told China Daily that spring weather on the mountain remains unstable and risky. He noted that teenagers are generally discouraged from attempting the summit because their developing bodies are less able to deal with the challenges of high-altitude climbing. However, he praised Li Haorong’s performance in particular. “He braved various challenges, such as the crevasses of the Rongbuk Glacier, the steep ice walls of the North Col and the oxygen-deprived (缺氧的) ‘death zone’ above 8,000 meters,” he said.
24. What benefits does sports bring to Li Haorong?
A. Thinking patterns. B. Physical strength.

D. They are easy to get lost in snow and ice conditions.
27. Which words best describe Li Haorong according to the passage?
A. Active and responsible. B. Helpful and creative.

When you finally finish your homework and get to relax, what do you do? Do you lie on your bed and scroll through (滚屏) your phone? Many people find that this kind of entertainment only brings boredom and emptiness.
Contrary to what many people may think, play isn’t just a waste of time. Having the ability to play and relax meaningfully during your leisure time is important.
“Leisure doesn’t improve quality of life unless one knows how to use it effectively,” James Wallman, the author of Time and How to Spend It, told CNBC Make It, explaining that some experiences are “junk experiences” while others are like “superfoods”.
The “superfood” activities put you into a state of “flow”, which is “about being in the present zone and really enjoying yourself”, added Wallman. Any pleasurable activity that truly challenges us has the potential to lead to the flow state.
These “superfoods” help you achieve a higher “leisure quotient” (LQ, 玩商). LQ is an index (指数) used to describe one’s ability to relax and play. A high LQ usually means that a person has good control over their life, knows how to develop their potential and keeps a balanced lifestyle that makes them healthier and happier, according to China Daily.
Psychological (心理学的) research shows that people with high LQ scores feel happier and generally avoid depression (抑郁) and other mental illnesses. Meanwhile, Kenichi Ohmae, a Japanese management expert, points out that those who can play will succeed.
Instead of doing passive activities like scrolling through short videos, people with high LQ scores actively select activities that suit their interests and strengths, giving them continuous positive feedback.
According to Wallman, examples of this positive feedback include: a memorable story you can share with others; a new skill or a different world view; greater engagement with the real world; and improved relationships or a higher social position.
Next time you find yourself bored with nothing to do, try engaging in some experiences that can benefit you or add to your life. It’s never too late to improve your LQ!
28. What kind of activities are “superfood” activities according to James Wallman?
A. Those that make you energetic.
B. Those that help you find something new.
C. Those that are both enjoyable and challenging.
D. Those that cause you to feel excited for a while.
29. What does the LQ index measure?
A. The potential to have a successful life.
B. The ability to manage stress effectively.
C The ability to balance health and happiness.
D. The skills in meaningful play and relaxation.
30. What can people with a high LQ usually do?
A. Follow the same world view as others.
B. Make life meaningful, enjoyable and healthy.
C. Select activities which suit their interests only.
D. Avoid depression and mental illnesses completely.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. The debate about the use of LQ.
B. The importance of LQ and its effects.
C. Different ways to improve a person’s LQ.
D. The connection between LQ and happiness.

NASA’s first humanoid (像人的) robot, Valkyrie is going through a few of its final testing stages at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston. Texas. The humanoid robot, much like Iron Man but constructed from metal and electronics, copies human walking and appearance. NASA is exploring if such machines can further space exploration, starting with the Artemis mission, according to Reuters.
Standing at 6 feet 2 inches (188 centimeters) and weighing 300 pounds (136 kilograms), Valkyrie is an electric humanoid robot able to operate in degraded or damaged human-engineered environments, like areas hit by natural disasters.
JSC designed and constructed NASA’s Valkyrie specifically for participation in the 2023 DARPA Robotics Challenge Trials. Drawing on the knowledge gained from the creation of Robonaut 2, the Valkyrie team at JSC created this robot in fifteen months. They integrated (整合) improved electronics, actuators and sensing abilities based on the advancements made in earlier generations of humanoid robots at JSC.
In July, the humanoid robot went through testing in Australia to rate its software, generating valuable data and feedback (反馈) for NASA. These tests aimed to advance remote mobile dexterous manipulation (灵活操控) abilities.
NASA has cooperated with robotics firms, including Apptronik based in Austin, Texas, to explore the insights gained from humanoid robots designed for Earthly applications. This cooperation aims to learn how humanoid robots developed for purposes on Earth could help the development of future humanoid robots meant for space.
Humanoid robots to be arranged in space hold the possibility to perform dangerous tasks such as cleaning solar panels or examining equipment that is out of order outside spacecraft. This ability allows astronauts to focus on exploration and discovery without putting their safety at risk. “We’re not trying to replace human workers; we’re just trying to take the dull, dirty and dangerous work off their plates to allow them to focus on those higher-level activities,” told Shaun Azimi, NASA Dexterous Robotics Team Leader, to Reuters.
32. What is mainly presented about Valkyrie in paragraph 2?
A. Its testing results. B. Its creation process.
C. Its wide applications. D. Its appearance and functions.
33. What does the underlined phrase “Drawing on” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Making use of. B. Taking care of.
C. Losing sight of. D. Keeping track of.
34. What can be inferred about humanoid robots to be used in space?
A. They will replace astronauts soon.
B. They are too expensive to be widely used.
C. They can help astronauts avoid risky work.
D. They have already solved all space problems.
35. What is the text mainly about?
A. The future development of space exploration.
B. The comparison of different humanoid robots.
C. The partnership between NASA and robotics firms.
D. The introduction of a NASA-based humanoid robot.

My Dream Job
Good morning, everyone!
I’m Li Hua, and my dream job is to become an astronaut. Space has always fascinated me — the vast stars, mysterious planets, and the challenge of exploring the unknown.
To achieve this dream, I’ll take practical steps. First, I’ll study math and physics hard, as they’re the basis of space knowledge. Second, I’ll keep exercising to build a strong body, which is necessary for tough space missions. Besides, I’ll read books and watch documentaries about space to learn more. Joining our school’s science club might also help me connect with others who share the same interest.
I know the path is tough, but I’m ready to work for it. Someday, I hope to float in space and make contributions to human exploration. Thank you!

W: Now get out of here and dry yourselves
2. 【原文】M: Hi, Mary. Who was the girl playing ball with you near your house yesterday afternoon? She was just as sweet as a strawberry.
W: Oh, she was my sister’s friend Camila. She came over to ask for a comic book.
3. 【原文】W: What team sport is the most popular in your country?
M: In Brazil, a large majority are crazy about football.
W: So are you also a fan of it?
M: No. I’m fond of playing tennis. I hate contact sports, such as boxing or karate.
4. 【原文】M: Here is some medicine for you. Since autumn has arrived, you’d better eat less yogurt. Refrigerated food will do harm to your stomach.
W: Got it. I’ll get pure milk and warm it up.
M: Yes, that’s it. If you still feel the pain, you’d better go to a clinic.

W: Well, I often play basketball in the park near my house after work. I think basketball is cooler and more exciting. What’s more, winning a point in a basketball game is much easier than scoring a goal on a football field.

W: Certainly, they truly deserve our respect and admiration.
7. 【原文】M: Hi, Ruth. Is everything okay? You seem a bit down.

When I finally rushed into the classroom, Mr. Thompson was explaining the English grammar rules. His face darkened when he saw me standing at the door.
M: Oh dear! It was the second time that you had been late for his class this week. You were late due to a broken alarm clock on Monday.
W: After getting off the school bus in the afternoon, I fell down on the road.
M: Last night, it snowed heavily, and the road turned quite icy.
W: Yes, I wish the beautiful sun could come out tomorrow.
M: Me too. I’m fed up with the clouds and snow.
8. 【原文】M: Hi, can I take your order?
W: I downloaded a coupon from Coupons.com. It says I can get forty dollars’ worth of a set meal for twenty dollars.

W: No wonder Stuart chose to leave his job.
M: For the first time in 25 years, my sister Alexandra is struggling financially. She just gave birth to a kid several months ago. To tell the truth, I’m also under constant pressure at work.
