“We know it was you, Mr. Ryder,” Holmes said. “You don’t need to tell me much. I know nearly everything about it. But I have one or two questions to ask. How did you hear of the blue diamond (钻石)?” “Catherine Cusack told me,” said Ryder.
“I see,” Holmes went on. “So, you and Cusack wanted to get the diamond and sell it for lots of money. You asked John Horner to come and repair the window in the room because you knew of his time in prison (监狱). When he left, you stole the diamond from the box and then called the police. Because of Horner’s time in prison, they believed he was the thief. It was all very easy. Then…”
“Oh, please, please!” cried Ryder, now on the floor at Holmes’feet. “Think of my father! Think of my mother! I never did anything wrong before. I’m never going to do it again. Please don’t tell the police.”
“Sit down in your chair!” said Holmes coldly. “You’re crying now, but did you feel sorry for young Horner? He knew nothing about the diamond! But the police believed he was a diamond thief, and so he is now going to prison—all because of you.”
“Now, please tell me, Mr. Ryder. How did the diamond get into a goose (鹅)?”
Ryder began his story, “After the police caught Horner, I went to my sister’s house in South London with the diamond in my pocket. I told her about the diamond thief. Then I went into the back garden. ‘How can I walk across London with the diamond?’ I thought. Then I looked down at the geese and I thought of something. I knew one of those geese was for me, for my Christmas dinner. So I quickly caught a big white goose with a black tail. Then I took the diamond from my pocket and put it into its mouth. As night falls, the sound of drums fills the air as an 8-meter fish-shaped lantern, followed by smaller ones, moves through the streets of Wangmantian village in Anhui province. The lanterns dance in the moonlight, like fish going after the moon’s shadow (影) in the water.
In the crowd, 27-year-old Wang Lijun leads the parade (游行) as the “head fish”. Sometimes, she cheers on the team behind her. In the past, elders held this role, but now young volunteers returning home take on the job. “This tradition connects us. It has brought more young villagers like me back and attracted many tourists,” Wang said.
Every year, villagers hold fish-shaped lantern parades during the Spring Festival. Long ago, the mountain village faced fire risks, so people used fish lanterns to wish for “water to stop fire”. Over time, this tradition became a symbol of health and wealth. With over 600 years of history, the fish-shaped lanterns became a provincial intangible cultural heritage (省级非遗) in 2022. Through social media, more than 100,000 visitors came to Shexian to see the parades during this year’s Spring Festival from Feb 10 to Feb 17.
While protecting the intangible cultural heritage, the fish lanterns light up a way to the future for the local people. Sales of fish-shaped lanterns reached 1.15 million yuan ($159,700) this Spring Festival. Wang Huawu, 41, said his shop has been “full of orders” from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong since 2023.
As fish-shaped lanterns bring more tourists and business, the future looks bright.

29. Why does the writer mention Wang Huawu’s shop being full of orders in Para. 4?
A. To show the national popularity of fish-shaped lanterns.
B. To suggest that fish-shaped lanterns are replacing others.
C. To explain how expensive fish-shaped lanterns have become.
D. To show that only big cities enjoy and protect traditional culture.
30. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To compare fish-shaped lanterns with other festival traditions.
B. To encourage more people to visit Shexian during the Spring Festival.
C. To introduce the history, meaning and influence of fish-shaped lanterns.
D. To explain how people in Wangmantian village make fish-shaped lanterns.
31. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Make a Fish-Shaped Lantern
B. A Lantern Tradition That Brings Hope
C. The Meaning behind Fish-Shaped Lanterns
D. Villagers Say Goodbye to Their Hometown

①Do you have a good memory? Maybe your memory is better than all of your friends. But if you think you have a better memory than a chimpanzee’s (黑猩猩), you may be wrong!
②Tetsuro Matsuzawa, a scientist from Kyoto University, Japan, has shown how chimpanzees have far better memories than people. Scientists tested four chimpanzees and people. They showed them five numbers on a computer screen. Chimpanzees and people had to remember the numbers correctly. But to make it hard, the numbers disappeared after 0.7 second. Then, they changed the time to 0.2 second.
③“After many tests, we find that when people began to make mistakes, the young chimpanzees still did very well.” Matsuzawa said.
④“Chimpanzees have great memories,” he added, “You can do things to improve your memory. But you will never be a match for them.”
⑤ ▲ We share 98.8 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees. But during evolution (进化), we lost some of our shared abilities. As people learn new skills, like language, we have to lose some of our memory skills to make room in our brains. “To get something, we have to lose something,” said the scientist.
⑥Chimpanzees need good memories to live better. When a chimpanzee looks up at the big tree and picks a banana, he can’t forget where he saw it when he fights with other animals. That’s why chimpanzees still have better memories than us.
32. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A. People. B. Chimpanzees. C. Tests. D. Memory.
33. Which sentence can be put in the ▲ ?
A. Scientists are still wondering why.
B. Memory is important for humans’ evolution.
C. Humans and chimpanzees have a lot in common.
D. Here is why chimpanzees have better memories.
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Chimpanzees remember things faster and more correctly.
B. Language learning improves both memory and intelligence.
C. Scientists believe human memory will get better in the future.
D. People can train themselves to have better memories than chimpanzees.
35. Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Today is a day full of warmth and touching moments.
My son J, who has special needs, thanks me every day in simple but meaningful words, such as “Thank you, Mommy, for my dinner” or “Thank you for buying me this juice.” Although he doesn’t say much, his words always fill my heart with happiness and remind me of the beauty of being thankful.
Something special happened at school today. The Kindness Team visited us and brought so much warmth. Their kindness inspired (鼓舞) me, so I decided to prepare a lunch for them as a way to show my thanks. To my surprise, they were very moved and kept thanking me.
Later, they gave me a “Giving Plate” filled with cookies. The plate came with a special meaning: share the cookies with others, refill the plate with something new and then pass it on to someone else. I learned that this plate started in Detroit. Now, I’m thinking about sending it to Hawaii or Singapore, where my friends and family live. It’s amazing to think how this small plate could travel across the world, spreading (传播) kindness wherever it goes.
This experience taught me that even the smallest acts of kindness can make a big difference. I feel inspired by this kindness and want to share my story with you. I hope every one of you can _________________.

IX.
Social media influencers (网红) are a big part of teen life today. They seem to shape how you think, what you wear, and even how you feel about yourself. You may follow them for different reasons. No matter what the reasons are, they act like friends or role models, making you feel less alone.
Some influencers show good things, but others spread harmful ideas. The main danger of influencer culture lies in their gaslighting (操纵) of the people who watch them. They make you feel like you are never enough unless you buy their products. They make their lives look perfect but hide the hard work behind their “perfect” pictures. When you begin to doubt yourselves and wonder, “Why can’t I be like that?” or “What am I doing wrong?”, you have already been gaslighted.
Influencers know very well how to keep you watching. They show only what they want you to see. They share some personal moments every day and talk to you online. This can feel like a real relationship to you. But they aren’t your friends. What they want is to make money.
However, you are the one to decide whether they can influence you. Firstly, you should always ask yourself, “Is the influencer sharing his real life, or are they selling a product?” Secondly, choose to follow those who share meaningful things and ideas. If someone makes you feel bad about yourself, it’s time to unfollow. Finally, take up hobbies that create real-world connections and spend more time with your family and friends.
Remember, you have to know when to step back and keep it real.
My Reading Report
Hello, everyone. I recently read a passage about social media influencers. I learnt that influencers were like my friends and role models who could make me feel less alone. I also learnt how ____59____. They show their perfect lives, then I begin to doubt myself. I think if ____60____, I can be like them. And they act like my friends. How can I avoid the bad influence? Firstly, ____61____. Secondly, choose wisely who to follow. Finally, take up hobbies in real life.
After reading this passage, I began to think about my own life. I am following a girl online. I used to watch her videos day and night and hope to be as good as her. Now I realized social media ____62____. I decide it myself.

With the diamond inside the goose, I felt happy...”
(Adapted from The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle)
24. Why did Ryder ask Horner to repair the window?

B. Because Horner was a friend of his.
C. Because Horner was good at repairing windows.
D. Because he wanted to make Horner look like the thief.

【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了Holmes戳穿了Ryder的盗窃与嫁祸阴谋,Ryder哭诉求饶并交代了自己将偷来的蓝钻石藏进鹅肚子的经过。
【24题详解】
根据原文第二段:“You asked John Horner to come…he was the thief.”可知,Ryder知道Horner坐过牢,有犯罪前科。他故意叫Horner来修窗户,就是为了嫁祸,让警察以为Horner是小偷。
【25题详解】
根据最后一段:“‘How can I walk across London…I felt happy...”

30. What is the main purpose of the passage?

A. B. C. D.
【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. A

【32题详解】
第④段提到“Chimpanzees have great memories...But you will never be a match for them”,这里的them指代前文讨论的黑猩猩,因为整段都在对比人类和黑猩猩的记忆力。
【33题详解】
第⑤段后文提到“We share 98.8 percent of our DNA with chimpanzees. But during evolution, we lost some of our shared abilities. As people learn new skills, like language, we have to lose some of our memory skills to make room in our brains”,这是在解释黑猩猩记忆力更好的原因。D选项起到了承上启下的作用,符合逻辑。
【34题详解】
文章第②-③段提到“After many tests, we find that when people began to make mistakes, the young chimpanzees still did very well”,能推断出黑猩猩记忆事物更快、更准确。与选项A表述一致。
