Unit 1 Career Talks Developing Ideas I. Basic Information · Grade: Grade 8 · Textbook Version: Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press (2024 Edition) · Unit: Unit 1 Career Talks · Section: Developing Ideas (Listening Focus) · Class Duration: 45 minutes · Teaching Objectives 1 Listening Skills: Students can listen for the main idea and specific details of a radio program preview and an interview. They can complete related tasks (multiple choice, web page filling, and diagram completion) accurately. 2 Language Knowledge: Master core words and phrases related to jobs and career talks, such as "career, interview, preview, radio program, experience, skill, patience, challenge". 3 Affective Goal: Cultivate students’ interest in different jobs, encourage them to understand the meaning of work, and form a positive attitude towards career exploration. · Key and Difficult Points 1. Key Point: Listening for specific information to finish the three required tasks (choosing next week’s show, completing the web page, and filling in the diagram about Yanjing’s interview). 2. Difficult Point: Catching key details quickly while listening, especially the reasons, specific jobs and gains mentioned in Yanjing’s interview; understanding the logical connection of the listening materials. · Teaching Aids: Multimedia equipment (audio player, PPT), listening materials, worksheets (with web page and diagram), blackboard. II. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Warm-up & Lead-in (5 minutes) 1. Greeting: Greet students in English and have a short free talk. Teacher: Good morning, class! How are you today? Do you have a dream job? What kind of job do you want to do in the future? (Invite 2-3 students to share their answers.) 2. Lead-in: Introduce the topic of the lesson. Teacher: Today, we will learn about a radio program and an interesting interview. The radio program is about career talks, and we will listen to a guest who tried many different jobs. Let’s start our listening journey! Step 2: Pre-listening (7 minutes) 1. Present new words and phrases: Show the new words on the PPT, read them aloud, and explain their meanings briefly (combined with the context of the listening materials).Key words: preview (n. 预告), radio program (广播节目), interview (n. 采访), guest (n. 嘉宾), onion cutter (切洋葱工), panda keeper (熊猫饲养员), challenge (n. 挑战), patience (n. 耐心), skill (n. 技能) 2. Introduce the listening tasks: Tell students clearly about the three tasks they will finish in this lesson. Teacher: Today we have three listening tasks. First, we will listen to the preview of a radio program and choose what next week’s show is. Then, listen again to complete the web page “Exploring Our World”. Finally, we will listen to the interview of Yanjing and fill in the diagram about his jobs. 3. Guide students to predict: Ask students to look at the options of the first task and the blank web page, and predict the possible content of the listening materials. Teacher: Before listening, let’s look at the options for Task 1. Can you guess what next week’s radio show will be about? And look at the web page, what information do you think we need to fill in? (Ask students to share their predictions.) Step 3: While-listening (20 minutes) Task 1: Listen to the preview of the radio program and choose what next week's show is (7 minutes) 1 First listening: Play the audio of the radio program preview once. Ask students to listen for the main idea and choose the correct answer from the given options (e.g., A. A talk about dream jobs; B. An interview with a person who tried many jobs; C. A discussion about how to find a good job). Teacher: Now, let’s listen to the preview for the first time. Please focus on the main idea and choose the right option for next week’s show. Don’t worry about the details. 2 Check the answer: Invite a student to share his/her answer and explain the reason briefly. Then play the audio again to confirm the answer. Teacher: Who can share your answer? Why do you choose this option? Let’s listen again to check if you are right. Task 2: Listen again and complete the web page “Exploring Our World” (7 minutes) 1) Second listening: Play the audio of the radio program preview again. Ask students to listen carefully and fill in the blanks on the web page (the web page includes basic information such as the name of the radio program, the time of next week’s show, the guest, and the topic). Teacher: Now we will listen to the preview again. This time, please listen carefully and fill in the blanks on your worksheet. Pay attention to the key information like the program name, time, guest and topic. 2) Check and correct: Ask students to exchange their worksheets with their deskmates to check the answers. Then invite several students to fill in the blanks on the blackboard (or PPT) and explain the key information they caught. Play the audio for the third time if necessary to help students correct their mistakes. Teacher: Please exchange your worksheets with your deskmates and check each other’s answers. Then who can come to the front and fill in the blanks on the PPT? Let’s listen again if you have any questions. Task 3: Listen to the interview of Yanjing and complete the diagram (6 minutes) 1. Introduce the diagram: Show the diagram on the PPT or worksheet, which includes three parts: “Why he tried different jobs”, “What fun jobs he did”, and “What he learned”. Teacher: Next, we will listen to an interview with Yanjing. He tried many different jobs in three years. Please listen carefully and fill in the diagram. The diagram has three parts: the reasons for trying different jobs, the fun jobs he did, and the things he learned from these experiences. 2. First listening for the interview: Play the interview audio once. Ask students to listen for the main idea and get a general understanding of Yanjing’s experience. Teacher: Listen to the interview for the first time and try to know what Yanjing’s story is about. Don’t worry about filling in the diagram now. 3. Second listening for the interview: Play the audio again. Ask students to listen carefully and fill in the diagram with key words or short sentences. Teacher: Now listen again. This time, focus on the three parts of the diagram and fill in the key information. You can use key words or short sentences, not full paragraphs. 4. Check and explain: Invite students to share their answers for each part of the diagram. Correct the mistakes and explain the key details (e.g., Yanjing tried different jobs because a teacher encouraged him; the fun jobs he did include onion cutter and panda keeper; he learned that it’s important to love the job, keep learning new skills and work hard). Play the audio for the third time if some students still can’t catch the key information. Teacher: Let’s check the answers one by one. Who can share the reasons why Yanjing tried different jobs? What fun jobs did he do? And what did he learn? Let’s listen again to confirm. Step 4: Post-listening (10 minutes) 1) Retell the listening content: Ask students to work in pairs. Based on the completed web page and diagram, retell the radio program preview and Yanjing’s interview in their own words. Teacher: Now work in pairs. Use the information on your worksheet to retell the radio program preview and Yanjing’s story. You can use simple sentences and key words. 2) Group discussion: Ask students to discuss the question in groups of 4: “What do you think of Yanjing’s experience? What can you learn from him?” Invite 2-3 groups to share their opinions. Teacher: Yanjing tried 20 different jobs in three years. What do you think of his experience? What can you learn from him? Discuss with your group members and share your ideas with the class. 3) Summary: Summarize the key points of the lesson, including the listening skills (listening for main idea and specific details) and the key information from the listening materials. Emphasize the importance of trying new things and learning from experiences. Teacher: Today we listened to a radio program preview and an interview with Yanjing. We learned how to listen for main idea and specific details. We also knew that Yanjing tried many jobs because of a teacher’s encouragement, and he learned a lot from these experiences. I hope you can also be brave to try new things and form a positive attitude towards careers. Step 5: Homework (3 minutes) 1 Listen to the radio program preview and Yanjing’s interview again (at least 3 times) and read the listening scripts aloud. 2 Complete the worksheet (check and correct the mistakes in the web page and diagram). 3 Write a short passage (50-80 words) about Yanjing’s experience, using the information from the diagram. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
