01:课堂典例
A large source of rubbish is packaging material. It often makes up more than 30 percent of the total. To understand why this is true, think of the packaging commonly used for a simple product, such as toothpaste. The packaging includes not only the tube for the toothpaste, but also the box for the tube. This box is put into a plastic wrapper. Then, the boxes are transported in a cardboard container.
Most packaging material ends up in a landfill after it is thrown away. Though necessary, landfills take up valuable space, often stink, and can leak harmful substances into the soil. Landfills not included, the production of packaging material itself is a major source of air and water pollution.
People are now trying to solve the problems caused by packaging materials. In 1991, Germany took the lead by requiring companies to recycle the packaging used for their goods. To do this, the companies set up recycling bins in every neighborhood. Consumers now separate their rubbish into three categories—metal, plastic and paper cartons. They then put it into the appropriate bin. The rubbish sorted, it is transported to a recycling company for processing.
The programme worked well at first. However, the amount of rubbish has begun to increase again. One reason for this is that many consumers no longer reduce waste because they think the problem is solved. It seems that to properly deal with the problem of rubbish, everyone must remain vigilant and do their part.

Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
How Thankfulness Help Us
When you feel thankful for things you've received, that's gratitude. You never feel it from nowhere; you are clear who or what is responsible. “Gratitude is how you relate to others,”says Willibald Ruch, a psychology professor at the University of Zurich. He and other researchers believe this understanding of our reliance on others is becoming more difficult today.”With commercial and social media, everything makes the younger generation feel that they are the center of the universe,” says Tamiko Zablith, founder of the consulting firm Minding Manners. “If it's all about them, why thank others?”
If true, this would be a disturbing health trend, because thanking others in heartfelt ways carries long-lasting effects. Canadian researchers found that people who wrote thank-you letters or performed good deeds for a six-week period decreased their pain, upped their energy, accomplished more every day, and improved their mental health. And you can experience these benefits at any age. Swedish researchers have found that people ages 77 to 90 who choose to be thankful are happier and stronger.”When they can't change something, they choose gratitude and focus on what's good, like still being living by themselves,” says study author Helena Honder, at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden.
Gratitude is infectious, as well: Those who are helped are more likely to pay kindness forward. One study found that when someone is thanked, it more than doubles his or her chances of being helpful again, likely because he or she enjoys feeling socially valued. Zablith likes the reaction she gets when she thanks a stranger who holds the door open for her at Starbucks. “The look on his face is shock,”Zablith says. “He'll be nicer to the cashier, the next person he sees at work.”
Let's remember: gratitude isn't just a feeling—it's a powerful choice to recognize and appreciate others. With gratitude, we not only uplift ourselves but also contribute to a kinder, more connected world.

实战演练2
Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Rise of Artificial Intelligence and the Decline of Truth
Spreading convincing misinformation once required great effort, but today a smartphone and generative AI can create fake photos, cloned voices, and videos that misrepresent events. While warnings about social media’s power to mislead are not new, AI has intensified the danger by making false content easier to produce and harder to detect. As a result, people now question whether what they see and hear is real, with genuine recordings dismissed as fake and fabricated ones appearing convincingly true.
Fake content made by AI is already common. Many fake images show clear signs of AI generation, such as strange body shapes or unnatural faces, but these clues are easy to overlook. As the technology improves, such imperfections will become harder to spot. With so much fake content spreading, some people now use the existence of AI as an excuse to doubt even genuine information.
The effects of this technology can be very serious. For example, the U. S. Federal Trade Commission has warned that cheaters can now copy a person’s voice to pretend to be a family member and trick people into sending money. In schools, some teens have already been caught creating and sharing fake images of classmates using AI tools. Despite these harmful uses, the technology is also being packaged as a consumer product. For instance, some smartphones now have advanced editing tools that can change faces in photos or even remove people completely.
Not everyone thinks public access to AI will make misinformation worse. Some say there has always been more online content than people can handle. Yet this perspective is hardly comforting. Trust in institutions and experts is already at historic lows. As Hany Farid, a specialist in investigating digital evidence, observes: “If you don’t trust me and I don’t trust you, how do we respond to climate change, or have fair and open elections?”

Ice Cream Innovation
Is there anything nicer than a cooling ice cream on a hot summer’s day? This traditional treat is centuries old, but our tastes and consumer habits are evolving. How is the ice cream production process changing, and who is driving this change?
Making ice cream is a time-consuming process. While the recipe is simple, getting the balance right between ice, fat and air is important if the ice cream is to have the right texture. To achieve this, the ingredients need to be mixed and heated, then cooled and frozen-a process that takes time and uses a lot of energy. Designers and engineers are working to improve the production process with new specialized equipment to make it increasingly automated. For now, however, even with the help of robots and 3D printers, it can take up to two years from testing a new frozen dessert product to it being available to consumers.
And demand is only going up. According to statistics, more than 25 billion litres of ice cream were eaten worldwide in 2021. While the US and China are the biggest consumers, data shows that people in the UK bought 28%more ice cream during the UK’s record-breaking summer compared to a year earlier. Clearly, rising temperatures can explain why some people are buying more ice cream, but it’s not the only explanation. The pandemic has seen people reaching for pleasures they can enjoy at home, which include eating indulgent(纵容的) foods.
So, what new things can we expect? Dairy still dominates, but plant-based ice cream and low-calorie choices are a growing part of the frozen dessert market. But, according to Elsebeth Baungaard, the next global trend will be less about innovation and more about portion size “I’m sorry to say it’s simply shrinking”, she says. “But the quality will be higher.”

实战演练4
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize in no more than 60 words the main idea and the main point (s) of the passage. Use your own words as far as possible.
Why People Watch Sports
On a weekend afternoon, millions of people sit before screens or gather in stadiums, their hearts rising and falling with every goal, every swing, every shout. To an outsider, this passion might seem puzzling — after all, the result changes nothing about their own lives. Yet for those watching, the experience feels deeply real, even necessary.
Part of the appeal lies in emotion. Sports compress the drama of life into a few exciting hours, offering joy, tension, relief, and sometimes heartbreak—all without lasting harm. A match can stir the same chemical reactions as adventure or love, releasing energy that makes spectators feel vividly alive. The emotional rollercoaster is not chaos but a kind of shared rhythm that binds people together.
That sense of connection is what keeps fans returning. Sitting among strangers who cheer for the same team, or chatting online with distant supporters, we become part of a temporary community that breaks the boundaries of daily life. Victories and losses alike strengthen this invisible bond, giving fans the warmth of belonging and the comfort of shared identity.
Research suggests that these moments matter. Studies in England and Belgium have found that people who regularly watch or attend sporting events tend to feel less lonely and more satisfied with life. Even those who follow games on TV often describe a lift in mood and motivation, as if each match renews their sense of participation in the wider world.
Beyond the excitement, sports offer stories — of discipline, courage, and persistence — that mirror the struggles of ordinary people. Watching athletes push limits or recover from failure reminds us what effort and hope can achieve.
Sometimes, when the crowd falls silent just before a decisive play, time itself seems to pause. In that breathless space between hope and outcome, every spectator feels the same heartbeat — a quiet reminder of how deeply alive we are.

实战演练 5
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
The Future of Virtual Reality
Over the next decade, Virtual Reality (VR) could dramatically change our lives as it becomes more advanced and widely used. Experts think that by 2030, VR might be a big part of our everyday routines. Right now, over 40 million people own VR headsets, and this number is expected to double in the next three years.
VR is set to make a big impact in various fields. In gaming, VR will offer a new level of engagement, letting players fully explore and interact with virtual worlds. Games will become more interactive, allowing players to look around and control their experiences in ways not possible with traditional games. Designers are already exploring new game styles that focus on enjoying the VR environment rather than just quick reactions or scoring points.
Education will also see exciting changes. Within the next five to ten years, teachers might use VR to take students on virtual field trips or provide engaging learning experiences. History students could witness important battles up close, medical students might explore the human body as if they were tiny cells, and music students could attend virtual concerts in iconic venues like the Sydney Opera House.
VR could also transform travel. By 2021, virtual scenes of cities, beaches, and other stunning places could become available, allowing people to “visit” destinations that are otherwise hard to reach due to distance or cost. This could make travel more accessible for everyone and potentially reduce the environmental impact of tourism, such as reducing carbon emissions from flights and transportation.
However, VR might not become as popular as expected. If the technology doesn’t advance enough, it could end up like older tech such as CDs or PDAs. Problems like delay or motion sickness from underpowered hardware might make it less appealing. Despite its potential, VR’s future success will depend on overcoming these challenges.
