Macie Semrau, a 6-year-old girl from Eliot, Maine, seldom missed school. So, when she refused to even get dressed one day, her mother decided to allow her to stay home with her father Kyle and her 4-year-old brother Caleb. The family would later be extremely thankful that the little girl refused to leave after she found her father passed out in the basement.
After returning from his night work, Kyle was feeling light-headed. He told his wife Kate that he would be laying low for the day with their children. He finally made his way to the basement. Macie paid attention to her father’s condition when she heard him shouting, and she and Caleb went to have a look. Macie found her 37-year-old father was about to lose awareness (意识). She asked him for his phone’s passcode (密码) so she could unlock it. After successfully opening his phone, she found the local police department’s number and called the police.
Smith was floored by Macie’s decision-making and her ability to stay calm. The little girl listed the family’s Goodwin Road address while explaining that her father was in trouble. In the meantime, Caleb comforted his father. Thanks to Macie and Caleb, he was sent to Wentworth-Douglass Hospital, where he required four liters of oxygen (氧气) and spent three days recovering.
“I’m very lucky, obviously because of my daughter and son and the police’s response” said Kate. “It was quick,” he added, mentioning that the police arrived just in two minutes thanks to Macie’s call. “It was unbelievable. I was in tears myself,” he said.
The Eliot Police Department also praised the young girl for her quick thinking and strong awareness. Eliot Police Chief Elliot Moya praised the Semraus for teaching their children about awareness of their surroundings (环境) as well as communication skills. Can your child open your phone and call the police? If not, now’s the time for them to learn.
4. What do we know about Macie from paragraph 1?
A. She was late for class regularly. B. She went off to school almost every day.
C. She enjoyed staying home with her father. D. She liked to play with her brother at home.

A. How to call for help with her father’s phone.
B. How to give emergency treatment to her father.
C. How to send her father to hospital with her brother.
D. How to get her father’s phone to connect to the Internet.
6. Why did Kyle say he was lucky?
A. His daughter was wise to skip school that day.
B. His kids and the police’s response was immediate.
C. A policeman happened to be there to come to his help.
D. The police department’s phone was not busy that day.
7. We can infer that parents had better teach their kids to ________.
A. fit into their new surroundings B. show off their communication skills

Vacations are being redefined to improve your wellness experiences. The new buzzword is “sleep tourism” and the focus is on ensuring that you rest well at night and actually return from your vacation feeling refreshed.
When away, vacationers traditionally like to make use of every second of the day. They rush from site to site, eat meals at all hours of the day, and treat themselves at night. And when finally returning to their hotel rooms at night, they find it hard to sleep. Besides, downtown hotels may be centrally located, with noisy traffic and flashing city lights pervading (弥漫). Also, many people simply do not sleep well when away from their own beds. All these factors lead to pain, allergies and hormonal issues, making sleep challenging.
“Sleep tourism” addresses these issues and more. Special sleep suites have been thoughtfully designed to offer quiet and darkness. Hotels are investing in artificial intelligence mattresses (床垫) that adjust temperature and have cushions to relieve pressure points. The mattresses can also track sleep statistics and offer vacationers feedback on their sleep patterns.
Sleep suites are a huge advance in tourism and are now found in wellness hotels around the world. Each offers different ways of inducing sleep, according to Condé Nast Traveler. Many provide a menu of relaxing teas and a tailored bed. No matter which sleep suite you choose, the goal is to sleep well so you can improve your health and well-being. Sinking into a comfortable bed should be the best part of a trip!
The hope is that more hotels adapt to this wellness trend and return to the original purpose of a hotel room, which is sleep! Now you can tour around by day and have sweet dreams by night.
8. According to the text, what is the new trend in vacationing?
A. Partying all night. B. Eating at special hours.
C. Sleeping well on holiday. D. Rushing from site to site.
9. How do sleep suites improve the sleep experience for guests?
A. By serving a wide variety of food.
B. By introducing mattresses with AI technology.
C. By offering in-room entertainment systems.
D. By ensuring complete darkness in the rooms.
10. The underlined word “inducing” in Paragraph 4 probably means “________”.
A. promoting. B. preventing. C. causing. D. affecting.
11. What can we infer about the future of hotels from the passage?
A. All hotels will have artificial intelligence mattresses.
B. Traditional hotels will disappear because of “sleep tourism”.
C. More hotels will focus on providing better sleep experiences.
D. Downtown hotels will move to quieter areas to avoid traffic noise.
D
Some foods are highly processed or ultra-processed. Ultra-processed foods (UPF) have become increasingly popular and range from chips to microwave meals and even bread. Even just a casual glance at supermarket shelves reveals a collection of UPF offerings in delicate and attractive packaging. Besides their affordability, UPF not only offer time-saving convenience, but also momentary satisfaction filled with fat, sugar, salt and additives. After all, who can resist enjoying a tasty snack when lost in a football game or an exciting new TV series?
Although much is discussed about the direct negative impact of these products on our health, including obesity, heart diseases and diabetes, little has been said about the impacts of UPF on the environment. The most serious environmental impacts of UPF-rich diets mainly come from the post-farm stages, especially from the final product creation and packaging processes.
One specific additive that has the most environmental impact is palm oil. Palm oil is responsible for deforestation of some of the world’s big forests, which have diverse animals and plants. It is one of the world’s most consumed vegetable oils that can be found in half of our food. The massive waste generated by over-packaged UPF is another factor to consider. Their plastic packaging doesn't degrade in landfills or in nature and has a dramatic impact on soil health and life in the sea. One recent study published in Nature Sustainability demonstrates that UPF processing and packaging stages have the greatest environmental impacts of the whole system and are a major source of environmental waste worldwide.
The environmental impact of ultra-processed foods cannot be ignored any longer. While producers must take action, it is our growing awareness of what we buy and how it is produced that drives real change. By choosing wisely — whether by rejecting heavily processed options or supporting sustainable brands — we exercise the power to shape a better food system, a responsibility we must embrace.
12. What can be learned about UPF from the first paragraph?
A. They are primarily consumed during casual leisure activities.
B. They are carefully produced to be environmentally friendly.
C. They are filled with various kinds of healthy added nutrients.
D. They are favored by many for their fancy packages and flavors.
13. Why palm oil was introduced in the text?
A. To compare it with some other vegetable oils.
B. To explain UPF's harmful environmental effects.
C. To show its relationship with animals and plants.
D. To discuss factors of UPF's packaging-related pollution.
14. What does the author think of the role we play in fighting UPF?
A. Tiny. B. Essential. C. Replaceable. D. Limited.
15. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. From Shelf to Soil: the Hidden Journey of UPF
B. Fast and Cheap: UPF Take Over Our Daily Diets
C. Beyond the Shelf: UPF Are Harming the Planet
D. Convenience at a Cost: the Health Damage of UPF

On Sunday afternoon, Janice had words with her mom and then angrily rushed out of the house. She couldn’t help weeping when she thought of the scolding from her mother. Having wandered in the street for hours, she felt a little hungry and wished for something to eat. She stood beside a stand for a while, watching the middle-aged seller busy doing his business. However, with no money in hand, she sighed and had to leave.
The seller behind the stand noticed the young girl and asked, “Hey, girl, you want to have the noodles?”
“Oh, yes... but I don’t have money on me,” she replied.
“That’s nothing. I’ll treat you today,” said the man. “Come in.”
The seller brought her a bowl of noodles, whose smell was so attractive. As she was eating, Jenny cried silently.
“What is it?” asked the man kindly.
“Nothing, actually I was just touched by your kindness!” said Jenny. “Even a stranger on the street will give me a bowl of noodles, while my mother drove me out of the house. She showed no care for me. She is so merciless compared to a stranger!”
Hearing the words, the seller smiled, “Girl, do you really think so? I only gave you a bowl of noodles and you thanked me a lot. But it is your mother who has raised you since you were a baby. Can you number the times she cooked for you? Have you expressed your gratitude to her?”
Jenny sat there, speechless and numb with shock; she remembered Mother’s familiar face and weathered hands. “Why did I not think of that? A bowl of noodles from a stranger made me feel grateful, but I have never thanked my mum for what she has done for me.”
On the way home, Jenny made up her mind to make an apology to her mother for her rudeness as soon as she arrived home. As Janice approached the doorway, she took a deep breath.
Paragraph 1:
When Janice pushed the door open and entered the home, she found her mother was not in.

【答案】12. D 13. B 14. B 15. C
【解析】

Even just a casual glance at supermarket shelves reveals a collection of UPF offerings in delicate and attractive packaging. Besides their affordability, UPF not only offer time-saving convenience, but also momentary satisfaction filled with fat, sugar, salt and additives. After all, who can resist enjoying a tasty snack when lost in a football game or an exciting new TV series?

根据最后一段中“While producers must take action, it is our growing awareness of what we buy and how it is produced that drives real change. By choosing wisely — whether by rejecting heavily processed options or supporting sustainable brands — we exercise the power to shape a better food system, a responsibility we must embrace. (虽然生产商必须采取行动,但我们对购买什么以及如何生产的日益增长的意识才是推动真正变革的动力。通过明智的选择——无论是拒绝过度加工的产品还是支持可持续的品牌——我们行使了塑造更好食品体系的权力,这是我们必须承担的责任。)”可知,作者认为我们在对抗UPF中起着至关重要的作用。故选B项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第二段中“Although much is discussed about the direct negative impact of these products on our health, including obesity, heart diseases and diabetes, little has been said about the impacts of UPF on the environment. (虽然关于这些产品对我们健康的直接负面影响,包括肥胖、心脏病和糖尿病,已经讨论了很多,但关于UPF对环境的影响却很少被提及。)”和第三段中“One recent study published in Nature Sustainability demonstrates that UPF processing and packaging stages have the greatest environmental impacts of the whole system and are a major source of environmental waste worldwide. (最近发表在《自然可持续性》杂志上的一项研究表明,UPF的加工和包装阶段对整个系统的环境影响最大,是全球环境废物的主要来源。)”可知,文章主要讲述了超加工食品(UPF)对环境的有害影响,所以C项“Beyond the Shelf: UPF Are Harming the Planet (货架之外:超加工食品正在危害地球)”适合作为文章标题。故选C项。

【答案】Paragraph 1:
When Janice pushed the door open and entered the home, she found her mother was not in. The house was quiet, with only the soft hum of the refrigerator breaking the silence. Janice felt a pang of guilt as she looked around the familiar surroundings, remembering the argument they had earlier. She walked over to the kitchen and saw a note on the table, written in her mother’s neat handwriting. “Janice, I’m sorry for losing my temper. I’ve gone to the market to buy some fresh ingredients for dinner. Let’s talk when I get back.” Janice’s heart sank as she read the note, realizing that her mother had been worried about her and had even apologized first. She felt a wave of gratitude and love wash over her, and decided to wait for her mother to return, ready to apologize and make things right.
Paragraph 2:
Her thoughts were brought back by a gentle touch on her hair. Janice turned around to see her mother standing there, with a look of concern and relief on her face. “Janice, you’re home! I was so worried about you,” her mother said, hugging her tightly. Janice felt tears welling up in her eyes as she hugged her mother back. “Mom, I’m sorry for what I said and did. I didn’t mean it. I was just so upset,” Janice apologized, her voice trembling. Her mother smiled and wiped away a tear from Janice’s cheek. “It’s okay, sweetie. I’m sorry too. Let’s not argue anymore and enjoy our dinner together,” she said, holding Janice’s hand and leading her to the dining table. As they sat down to eat, Janice felt a sense of warmth and peace wash over her, knowing that no matter what happened, her mother’s love and support would always be there for her.
