So how did I practise my spoken Chinese? In my effort to be a good student, I decided to talk to every single taxi driver in Beijing. Taxi drivers were easy targets. They couldn’t tell me to shut up and they had nowhere to hide from my horrible grammar. To my surprise, taxi drivers became my favorite Chinese teachers because most of the time they were happy to talk to me about anything. Also, their most loved topics of conversation tended to fall into three simple categories (种类): food, their hometown, and the foreigners’ countries. My ability to reach this level of conversational skill has been made possible by one question—“Are you a Beijinger?” and taxi drivers loved talking about their hometown. I found that 15 minutes with a Beijing taxi driver was worth one hour with my Chinese tutor because they couldn’t speak English so there’s no second language to fall back on when things got too tough. It’s just me and my Chinese skills that would help. I was constantly surprised by how much I understood in comparison to my Chinese language level. And even if they kept talking for the whole trip, at least I was honing my listening skills. Over time, I found I could understand more and more, and was able to respond surprisingly quickly. Another trick: If I wanted to impress, I would add an extra “r” to end my words. It always seemed to cheer them up, and usually I would get an encouraging “Your Beijing dialect is so good!” 4. What was an advantage for the author to talk to taxi drivers in Beijing? A. They were very knowledgeable. B. They were cheaper than teachers. C. They had to put up with his grammar. D. They were more willing to help. 5. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “honing” in paragraph 4? A. Improving. B. Showing. C. Missing. D. Exchanging. 6. Why did the author add an extra “r” to end his words? A. He hoped to practise his Beijing dialect. B. He wanted to make fun of the drivers’ accent. C. He mainly aimed to cover up his poor Chinese. D. He wanted to make a good impression on the drivers. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. The challenges of learning Chinese. B. The talkative taxi drivers in Beijing. C. The difficulty of living in a foreign country. D. The experience of practising spoken Chinese. C 5. A 6. D 7. 根据第二段“They couldn’t tell me to shut up and they had nowhere to hide from my horrible grammar.(他们不能叫我闭嘴,他们也无处可躲我糟糕的语法。)” 【5题详解】 词义猜测题,根据画线词后“Over time, I found I could understand more and more, and was able to respond surprisingly quickly.(随着时间的推移,我发现我能理解的越来越多,并且能够以惊人的速度做出反应。)” 故选A项。 根据最后一段中的“If I wanted to impress, I would add an extra ‘r’ to end my words.(如果我想给人留下深刻印象,我会在我的单词后面加一个“r”。)” 根据第一段“So how did I practise my spoken Chinese?(那么我是如何练习汉语口语的呢?)”以及第二段中的“In my effort to be a good student, I decided to talk to every single taxi driver in Beijing. Taxi drivers were easy targets.(为了成为一个好学生,我决定和北京的每一个出租车司机交谈。出租车司机很容易成为目标。)”并结合下文中作者回顾他在北京利用出租车司机练汉语的经历可知,本文主要介绍的是作者练习汉语口语的经历。故选D项。 C “Giraffenap” has been created by a Japanese company and is intended to allow the user to take a rest while standing when you feel tired or sleepy with the aim of improving performance at work. Rather than relying on coffee and endless yawns to try and make it through the workday, Koyoju Plywood Corporation declared about the “Giraffenap” that the nap box will allow you to “be refreshed” in just 20 minutes. Giving in to your sleepiness and taking a 20-minute nap will apparently help improve your performance by recovering from tiredness, reducing stress, restoring memory and concentration, and improving creativity. A study by NASA has found that pilots who took a 26-minute nap experienced a 34 percent improvement in performance, and a 16 percent improvement in reaction time. “As a new way to take a break, we will provide a space where you can take a nap while standing in the office,” the site explains. But why does it have to be standing? Well, the site explains that the research by Hokkaido University showed that sleeping while standing allows you to reach a sleep state in which you breathe lightly, so when you wake up you can feel the effect of a nap without having to sleep too much, and you can quickly return to work without feeling dizzy. Plus, making the box vertical (垂直的) rather than horizontal means that it takes up half as much floor space and makes it less likely that your boss will say there just isn’t room. The box also comes equipped with a fire extinguisher, smoke detector, and LED lighting for safety, and it blocks out sound from the outside to ensure a calm, sleep-worthy environment. Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t you just fall down if you tried to sleep while standing? Well, not with Giraffenap’s design. The box is equipped with four points to support the body at the head, butt, legs and feet, meaning you can relax in the box while still remaining upright. 8. Where is the “Giraffenap” designed to be used? A. At home. B. In the field. C. In the workplace. D. In the classroom. 9. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us? A. The benefits from taking a nap. B. The new finding by NASA. C. The ways of improving productivity. D. The pilots’ experience with the “Giraffenap”. 10. Why does the “Giraffenap” come in a vertical shape? A. It will ensure the sleepers’ safety. B. The sleepers can breathe slowly. C. It will occupy much less floor space. D. The sleepers can enter a deeper sleep state. 11. What can we infer about the sleepers in the “Giraffenap”? A. They have limited mobility. B. They will be disturbed by noise. C. They come out feeling pretty dizzy. D. They’re likely to suffer injuries. C 9. A 10. C 11. 由文章第一段““Giraffenap” has been created by a Japanese company and is intended to allow the user to take a rest while standing when you feel tired or sleepy with the aim of improving performance at work. (日本一家公司发明了这款名为“Giraffenap”的睡椅,当你感到疲倦或困倦时,它可以让你站着休息一下,以提高工作效率)”可知,Giraffenap被设计用于工作场所。故选C。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。由文章第三段“Giving in to your sleepiness and taking a 20-minute nap will apparently help improve your performance by recovering from tiredness, reducing stress, restoring memory and concentration, and improving creativity. A study by NASA has found that pilots who took a 26-minute nap experienced a 34 percent improvement in performance, and a 16 percent improvement in reaction time. “As a new way to take a break, we will provide a space where you can take a nap while standing in the office,” the site explains. (向困倦屈服,小睡20分钟,显然能帮助你从疲劳中恢复过来,减轻压力,恢复记忆力和注意力,提高创造力,从而提高你的表现。美国国家航空航天局的一项研究发现,小睡26分钟的飞行员在工作表现上提高了34%,反应时间提高了16%。该网站解释说:“作为一种新的休息方式,我们将提供一个空间,让你站在办公室里打盹。”)”可知,第三段主要讲述了小睡的好处。故选A。 由文章第四段中“Plus, making the box vertical (垂直的) rather than horizontal means that it takes up half as much floor space and makes it less likely that your boss will say there just isn’t room. (另外,把盒子竖着放而不是横着放意味着它只占一半的地板空间,这样你的老板就不太可能说没有地方放了)”可知,它是垂直的是因为它将占用更少的占地面积。故选C。 11题详解】 推理判断题。由文章最后一段“Now, I know what you’re thinking—wouldn’t you just fall down if you tried to sleep while standing? Well, not with Giraffenap’s design. The box is equipped with four points to support the body at the head, butt, legs and feet, meaning you can relax in the box while still remaining upright. (现在,我知道你在想什么——如果你站着睡觉,难道不会摔倒吗?好吧,Giraffenap的设计不会。这个盒子有四个点来支撑身体的头部、臀部、腿和脚,这意味着你可以在盒子里放松,同时保持直立)”可知,“Giraffenap”中的睡眠者行动受限。故选A。 D Someday, you may no longer need to brush your teeth by hand. Instead, a group of billions of nanoparticles (纳米粒子) could automatically do all that work for you. It would be especially life-changing for people who find it difficult or impossible to hold and move a toothbrush. Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter. The tooth-cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). One goes each side of the teeth. The nanoparticles sit in a liquid between the magnets. When the magnets are turned off, the nanoparticles move randomly in the liquid. As soon as one magnet gets turned on, the nanoparticles gather together near its center. When the researchers turn on the other magnet and turn off the first one, the nanoparticles extend outward in long, skinny bristles When there’s a tooth in the way, these bristles can’t stretch out as far as they want. So they push against the tooth’s surface. If there’s a gap between teeth, they push into the gap. Moving the magnets makes the bristles move against and between teeth. All that motion cleans the teeth. As a bonus, the nanoparticles also have strong power to kill viruses. The new device is just a proof of concept The researchers still need to turn it into a product that people will want to use. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager. 12. What is special about the tooth cleaner? A. It’s water-proof. B. It’s transformable. C. It looks like a toothbrush. D. It contains skinny bristles. 13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The working principle. B. The magnets motion. C. The virus-killing process. D. The bristles formation. 14. How does Steager feel about the future of the device? A. Uncertain B. Confident C. Concerned D. Surprised. 15. Which of the following would be the best title? A. A Tooth-Cleaner Fighting Bacteria B. A Breakthrough in Medicine C. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth-Cleaner D. A New Concept for a New Start 【答案】12. B 13. A 14. B 15. 根据第二段中的“But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter. (但这些刷毛的形状会发生变化,以适应它们遇到的任何表面。)”可知,这种牙刷的特殊之处在于的刷毛的形状会发生变化。故选B。 【13题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第三段中的“The tooth-cleaning robot works thanks to two magnets (磁铁). 故选A。 根据最后一段中的““There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager. (“从这里到那里有很多工程要做,但每个好的想法都需要有一个开始,”Steager说)”可推知,Steager对这款牙刷未来的发展很有信心。故选B。 【15题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“Steager, an engineer at the University of Pennsylvania (Penn) in Philadelphia and Hyun Koo, an inventor and dental researcher there, found a way to form the nanoparticles into long, skinny bristles (刷毛), a lot like the ones on a toothbrush. But these bristles shape-shift to fit whatever surface they encounter. (费城宾夕法尼亚大学的工程师Steager和那里的发明家兼牙科研究员Hyun Koo发现了一种将纳米颗粒形成细长刷毛的方法,很像牙刷上的刷毛。但这些刷毛的形状会发生变化,以适应它们遇到的任何表面)”可知,这篇文章主要介绍一款可变形的机器人牙齿清洁器。由此可知,C. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth-Cleaner A scientist is a person who explores and examines aspects of a certain field to better understand how they function. On a sunny afternoon, her favourite neighbour, Mrs. Baker, visited her. “I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said. “Do you know the empty lot (空地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. The place is a mess, covered with rubbish. “The city is letting us use the lot for a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.” “Sure, Mrs. Baker! ” Callie said cheerfully. “I will be happy to help you!” Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have a good place to go.” At school the next morning, Callie’s best friend Tamara was waiting for her in their classroom. Tamara said excitedly, “My mum bought tickets to go to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the new amusement park to open. Callie sighed and worried about her problem for the rest of the day. Her mother noticed her mood when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school?” her mother asked. Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mum?” Callie asked. “I know you want to go with Tamara and also help Mrs. Baker. B When I came to China, my supply of Chinese friends who were willing to hear me talk about school(one of the few topics I could hold more than a two-minute conversation about) was fairly limited. D He wanted to make a good impression on the drivers. 7. What is the text mainly about? A. The challenges of learning Chinese. B. The talkative taxi drivers in Beijing. C. The difficulty of living in a foreign country. D. The experience of practising spoken Chinese. C “Giraffenap” has been created by a Japanese company and is intended to allow the user to take a rest while standing when you feel tired or sleepy with the aim of improving performance at work. D Someday, you may no longer need to brush your teeth by hand. “There’s a lot of engineering to get from here to there, but every good idea needs to have a start.” says Steager. 12. What is special about the tooth cleaner? A. It’s water-proof. B. It’s transformable. C. It looks like a toothbrush. D. It contains skinny bristles. 13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The working principle. B. The magnets motion. C. The virus-killing process. D. The bristles formation. 14. How does Steager feel about the future of the device? A. Uncertain B. Confident C. Concerned D. Surprised. 15. Which of the following would be the best title? A. A Tooth-Cleaner Fighting Bacteria B. A Breakthrough in Medicine C. A Shape-Shifting Robotic Tooth-Cleaner D.
