Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America. Yet Death Valley is full of life. Death Valley isn't an easy place to live. It gets less than two inches of rain a year, so there isn't much water. It's hot, too. In July, temperatures often climb to over 46℃. The ground is mostly sand and rocks. There is even a driedup lake that has turned into salt crystals(结晶). None of this stops plants and animals from making Death Valley their home. People have found more than 1,000 types of plants there. It also has 51 types of mammals(哺乳动物), 36 kinds of reptiles(爬行动物), 6 types of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren't all small, either. There are big ones like bighorn sheep, mountain lions, and mule deer. Water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives in Death Valley. Some plants have roots that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from the seeds(种子)of desert sunflowers. Tiny pupfish can live in water that is 32℃ and five times as salty as the ocean! ( D )1.What do we know about Death Valley from the first two paragraphs? C.Life in Death Valley D.The challenge of living in Death Valley B (葫芦岛二模)Most of Greenland(格陵兰岛)is white because it's covered with snow and ice, which is different from what it's called. A special canyon(峡谷)was found there. 1.D Under all that snow and ice lies a rocky world. And the Greenland's Grand Canyon is there. In 2013, a group of scientists was studying the environment in Greenland. They were using special tools to look for the rocks deep below the ice. 2.B The canyon starts in the central part of the island and runs north to the Arctic Ocean(北冰洋). The canyon runs for at least 750 kilometres and is 800 metres deep. It is longer than any other canyon on Earth and is nearly as deep as the Grand Canyon in the United States. 3.E How was Greenland's Grand Canyon formed? There are two possible ways. The first is that the canyon was formed by huge ice. When ice slowly moved across the land, it cut its surface and created deep holes. 4.C For the last two million years, the world temperatures have gone up and down many times. When they go up, a lot of water melts from Greenland's ice and flows into the ocean. The plenty of water formed the long deep canyon. The discovery of Greenland's icy Grand Canyon is quite surprising. The canyon also helps scientists understand the history of Greenland. A.The beautiful scenery of Greenland Grand Canyon. B.While doing this, they found one of the world's largest canyons. C.The other is that the canyon was formed by huge rivers in the past. D.In some parts of Greenland, the ice goes two miles into the ground. E.Because of its size, it has been named the “Greenland's Grand Canyon”. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
