It was a dream come true to study at one of the oldest and best universities in the world. I enjoyed living and studying in Oxford which is little old town with rich history and beautiful buildings. The studying pace was very fast and demanding. However, there was still enough room to have fun with friends from my cohort (同伴). I really enjoyed the social life and being surrounded by like-minded people from all around the world.
I was surprised by how diverse the student body was when I arrived in Oxford. It is a melting pot (熔炉) of extremely smart and talented people from different cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Another shock I experienced was the obvious divide between students and locals. Oxford is after all not just a university but also a town inhabited (居住于) by locals. Although we all share the same space, there is almost no interaction between the students and the locals.
During my studies, I could not work because there simply wasn’t enough time to balance a demanding academic program and a job. Luckily I was on a scholarship that covered all of my costs so I didn’t have to worry about it. At the end of my master’s program, I interned (实习) at the Open Society Foundations.
I come from a low-income family in Croatia, and as a young person, I never thought I would be able to visit places like the UK, let alone study at a world-famous and expensive university like Oxford. Later I realized that there are actually many scholarships and programs that help students like me gain access to higher education. I would recommend young students from disadvantaged backgrounds to think big and not give up on their dreams. The doors will open for those who are determined and positive.
4. What did the author like in Oxford?
A. The social life and his cohort’s company. B. The fast and demanding studying pace.
C. The old and beautiful buildings. D. The local cultural history.
5. Why was the author surprised on arrival in Oxford?
A. The beautiful town. B. Friendly local people.
C. Smart and talented people. D. Students from different backgrounds.
6. How did the author pay the costs in Oxford?
A. With the help of the Open Society Foundations. B. With the support of a scholarship.
C. By attending some programs. D. By doing part-time jobs.
7. What does the author tell the young students?
A. They should study in famous universities. B. Scholarships will make them excellent.
C. They should try hard to realize their dreams. D. Students from low-income families are not bad.
A 5. D 6. B 7. C

Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operation and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world’s dessert masters.
In the latest experiment, researchers tried various cheesecake designs. In early attempts, which involved simply adding ingredients one by one, the team found that the cake quickly turned into a mixture. Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart. “To print the cake successfully, we need to put the ingredients together in a careful way,” said the team leader Cooper.
Although much work is still needed to collect data and improve the designs, scientists are hopeful that once mastered, 3D printing could replace traditional cooking, allowing food to be adapted to different nutritional(营养)needs. “We have a huge problem with the low nutrition of processed foods,” said Cooper. “3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs.”
The team said 3D printing could also allow chefs to create entirely new food experiences, with flavours and textures (质地) placed very precisely. “It is particularly practical for the plant-based meat market, where texture and flavour need to be carefully designed to taste like real meats,” said Cooper. And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us.
8. Why does the author mention robots in paragraph 1?
A. To show the disadvantages of 3D printing.
B. To introduce the popularity of using robots.
C. To stress the difficulty of 3D printing desserts.
D. To explain the function of robots in different areas.
9. What is the key to the success of the 3D printed cheesecake?
A. The thickness of biscuit walls. B. The flexibility of inside support.
C. The unique taste of ingredients. D. The structural design of the cake.
10. What do the underlined words “the silver lining” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. The side effect. B. The main reason.
C. The positive aspect. D. The best solution.
11. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning 3D printed food?
A. Promising markets. B. Additional benefits.
C. Practical concerns. D. Technical challenges.
C 9. D 10. C 11. B

根据第一段中“Robots have learned to drive on Mars, carry out brain operation and defeat master chess players. But when it comes to baking, making tasty desserts is far from a piece of cake. After many failed attempts, US researchers have successfully 3D printed a cherry cheesecake, although the outcome is unlikely to trouble the world’s dessert masters.(机器人已经学会了在火星上驾驶,进行大脑操作和击败国际象棋大师。但是说到烘焙,做出美味的甜点可不是小菜一碟。经过多次失败的尝试,美国研究人员成功地用3D 技术打印出了一个樱桃奶酪蛋糕,尽管这个结果不太可能困扰世界甜点大师们)”可知,机器人能在火星上驾驶,但是却很难做出美味的甜品,由此可推知,作者在第一段中提到机器人是为了强调3D打印甜点是有难度的。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Through trial and error, they discovered that a more architectural solution was needed. Walls of biscuit base were required throughout the cake to hold the softer ingredients, while triangular (三角的) biscuit supports on the inside were necessary to keep the cake from falling apart.(通过反复试验,他们发现需要一个更加体系结构化的解决方案。整个蛋糕需要饼干底座的墙壁来容纳较软的成分,而内部的三角形饼干支架是必要的,以防止蛋糕掉下来)”可推知,3D打印芝士蛋糕成功的关键是蛋糕的结构设计。故选D。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线短语所在句子“3D food printing will still produce processed foods, but perhaps the silver lining will be, for some people, a better control of nutrition based on personalized needs.(3D食品打印仍将生产加工食品,但也许the silver lining将是,对一些人来说,基于个性化的需求能更好地控制营养)”中but可知,前后是转折关系,3D食品打印仍将生产加工食品,这是不好的一面,但是对一些人来说,基于个性化的需求能更好地控制营养,这是它的积极方面。
根据最后一段中“And, with more concern about food safety, food prepared with less human handling could lower the risk of food-related illness and the spread of disease. According to Cooper, this seems like a win-win solution for all of us.(此外,由于人们对食物安全的关注日益增加,以较少人手处理的食物可以降低与食物有关的疾病和疾病传播的风险。据库珀所说,这对我们来说是个双赢的解决方案)”可知,最后一段主要介绍了关于3D打印食品的附加好处,故选B。

Emperor penguins are the largest penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a meter tall, and can weigh up to 40 kilograms.
For many months each year, emperor penguins live near the sea in large groups. However, the weather gets colder in May, and ice covers large areas of ocean. Each group moves many kilometers from the water. There, each mother penguin lays just a single egg. Then all the hungry mothers walk back to the ocean to find food. The father penguins put their eggs on top of their feet. They cover the eggs with a special piece of skin called the brood pouch.
For two months, the father penguins protect the eggs and keep them warm. They do this through some of the coldest weather conditions on Earth. By July, it is winter in Antarctica. Most other animals leave for warmer places, but the father penguins stay.
By August each mother penguin returns just in time to see her baby hatch. The chick is then moved to her brood pouch. This can be difficult. If the chick falls, it can freeze quickly. The penguin parents must be very careful. Once the chick has been moved, the father penguin can go back to the ocean to find food.
Over the next few months, penguin parents take turns going to the ocean for food. They each make the trip several times, bringing back food for the chick. The chick is always hungry and grows rapidly.
By December winter is ending. The chick can now live on its own. Soon it enters the water for the first time. It will swim and eat until next April, and then return. After a few more years, it, too, will start its own family.
12. What do father penguins do after the mother penguins lay eggs?
A. Build nests to keep the eggs warm. B. Cover the eggs with their whole body.
C. Take turns carrying the eggs to the sea. D. Hold the eggs on their feet with a skin pouch.
13. What will mother penguins do after returning in August?
A. Hatch the egg in the brood pouch. B. Move the chick to her brood pouch.
C. Let the father penguins rest immediately. D. Feed the chick with food from the ocean.
14. According to the text, when can the penguin chick begin to live on its own?
A. After the spring. B. Before the summer.
C. During the fall. D. After the winter.
15. What can be the title of the text?
A. How Emperor Penguin Parents Lay Their Eggs
B. The Life Cycle of Emperor Penguins in Antarctica
C. Surviving the Cold: Emperor Penguins’ Winter Habits
D. From Ocean to Land: Where Emperor Penguins Lay Eggs
D 13. B 14. D 15. B

根据空前“For most people, when they wake up in the morning, the first thing to come to their mind is to find their smartphone (对大多数人来说,早上醒来,脑海里浮现的第一件事就是找智能手机)”以及空后“Here are some quick and easy ways to handle the problem (这里有一些简单快捷的方法来解决这个问题)”可知,此空应衔接前文现象并引出下文解决办法。G选项“If it is the same to you, it is time for you to put your smartphone down (如果你也是这样,那么是时候放下你的智能手机了)”承接前文的普遍现象,且引出下文的解决策略,符合语境。故选G项。
根据空前内容可知本段建议读报纸,空后“Even the New York Times costs only $9 a week. It offers both home delivery and digital access (就连《纽约时报》每周也只需要9美元。它既提供送货上门服务,也提供数字版阅读权限)”提及了报纸的价格和订阅方式,由此可知此空应与读报纸的成本相关。B选项“Don’t be worried about the cost (不用担心成本问题)”引出下文关于报纸价格的内容,符合语境。故选B项。
本段小标题为“Listen to the radio (听收音机)”,空后“You will be amazed at how entertaining and helpful some radio programs still can be (你会惊讶地发现,有些广播节目仍然既有趣又有用)”介绍了听广播的好处,因此此空应是给出“打开收音机”的具体建议。D选项“Take your old radio out again and turn it on (把你的旧收音机再拿出来打开)”呼应小标题主题,且衔接下文内容,符合语境。
根据空后“However, whether dining at home or out, stick to the no-device rule. When having dinner in a restaurant with others, to make you stick to it, you can place phones in the center of the table (然而,无论是在家还是外出就餐,都要遵守不用电子设备的规则。和别人在餐厅吃饭时,为了坚持这个规则,你可以把手机放在桌子中央)”可知,本段核心建议是吃饭时放下手机。A选项“Set aside your phones(把手机放到一边)”为祈使句,且精准概括本段内容,适合作小标题。故选A项。
根据空前“When having dinner in a restaurant with others, to make you stick to it, you can place phones in the center of the table (和别人在餐厅吃饭时,为了坚持这个规则,你可以把手机放在桌子中央)”以及空后“Thus no one can break the rule (这样就没有人能违反规则了)”可知,此空应是补充另一个能让大家遵守“不用手机”规则的方法。F选项“You can also have a waiter put them in somewhere else (你也可以让服务员把手机放到别的地方)”中的“also”表明是补充建议,且能达到空后“没人违反规则”的效果,符合语境。

根据空前的“was so”和空后的“to”可知,此处考查固定短语be addicted to,意为“对……上瘾”,所以空处应用形容词addicted作表语。故填addicted。
【37题详解】
考查非谓语动词。句意:对我来说,戒掉这个习惯是非常困难的。根据空前的“It was very hard for me”可知,此处考查固定句型“It is + adj. + for sb. to do sth.”,意为“对某人来说做某事是……的”,其中it是形式主语,真正的主语是后面的动词不定式,所以空处应用动词不定式to quit作真正的主语。故填to quit。
故填a。
故填on。
故填what。
故填but。
