An engineer shortlisted (入围) for a global prize by the Prince of Wales said his invention was created at his mother-in-law’s dining table.
Adam Root built filters (过滤器) that remove microplastics from the water that comes out of washing machines and industrial units, preventing them from reaching the ocean. “It’s one of the greatest challenges of our generation and people don’t really understand or know about it,” said Mr Root from Saffron Walden in Essex.
His company, Matter, could win £1 million at the Earthshot Prize on 5 November 2025, whose winners are honored for creative solutions to help the planet. Microplastics have been found everywhere on Earth, even in Antarctic ice and inside deep-ocean animals’ bodies. Mr Root said he began developing solutions after leaving his engineering job eight years ago.
Mr Root said creating his self-cleaning, reusable product, Regen, was challenging and took four years of work in a laboratory. “I was also working at my mother-in-law’s dining table for about nine months. I then upgraded to working out of a stable (马厩) for a little while in the countryside of Essex, and eventually made it ‘big time’ and got a unit on a turkey farm,” recalled Mr Root.
Supported by £250 from The Prince’s Trust (now The King’s Trust) and his wife — who gave up her job to help — his business started off building filters for household washing machines, but has since raised more than £15m for its work and has 45 workers, and adapted the filters for industrial use, dealing with millions of liters of water. The device is now used in textile (纺织品) factories worldwide.
Mr Root said his company is one of three competitors shortlisted in Earthshot’s “Revive Our Oceans” category (类别). Some of the finalists in other categories include countries and cities.
“It was a little bit strange. There’s the country of Barbados, a city in China... and here’s Adam,” Mr Root said.
4. What is the purpose of Root’s invention?
A. To improve washing machines. B. To recycle water in textile factories.
C. To stop microplastics entering the ocean. D. To provide clean drinking water for people.
5. What difficulty did Root have when he developed his product?
A. He was short of startup funds. B. He lacked professional guidance.
C. He didn’t get his family’s support. D. He didn’t have a suitable workplace.
6. What can we learn about Matter from paragraph 5?
A. It has shown great potential for growth. B. It will be managed by The King’s Trust.
C. It has inspired Root to start another business. D. It is struggling to compete with big companies.
7. Which of the following can best describe Root?
A. Generous and honest. B. Confident and friendly.
C. Humorous and independent. D. Hardworking and determined.

Blind boxes, also called mystery boxes, have become very popular in recent years, especially among online shoppers. People are interested in them because no one knows what is inside until they open the box. The surprise and excitement make blind boxes a popular fashion.
What are blind boxes exactly? They are packages with different things inside. Buyers can’t see these things before opening. You can buy them online or in stores, and they have many kinds, such as beauty products, clothes, games or food. The price of each box is fixed, but the value of the inside things is different- it’s like a game of luck. Why do people love them? It’s because surprise makes our brains produce dopamine (多巴胺),a material that makes us feel happy. Also, the fear of missing out (FOMO) is another factor that drives people to buy blind boxes, as they do not want to miss out on the chance of receiving a special or rare thing.
However, buying blind boxes has risks. First, you may get things you don’t like or don’t need. Second, some blind boxes have low-quality or fake (虚假的) products, which is a waste of money. So, before buying, you should check the seller’s information and read other buyers’ comments to make sure the box is worth the price.
If you think the risks are too big, there are better choices. One alternative is subscription (订制) boxes. They are similar to blind boxes, but you can choose the kind you like. The things inside are made for your needs. Another choice is to buy single things. This way, you can be sure to get the ones you want and will use.
While blind boxes are amusing and exciting, they do come with certain problems. Thus, it is important to check the seller’s details and read other buyers’ reviews before you decide to buy one. For those who want more control over something they buy, subscription boxes or single things are better choices. In the end, whether to buy a blind box depends on your own choice and how much you want to try your luck with the unknown.
8. What is special about blind boxes?
A. They don’t cost much. B. The content inside is a surprise.
C. The price changes daily. D. They are intended for adults.
9. Why is FOMO mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To explain a common shopping habit. B. To describe a feeling of excitement.
C. To give a reason for buying blind boxes. D. To compare two different emotions.
10. What does the underlined word “alternative” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Box. B. Surprise. C. Choice. D. Tip.
11. What is suggested if one wants more control over his buys?
A. Order a box with confirmed contents. B. Choose a box with lower fixed price.
C. Find buyers’ information after buying. D. Follow the seller’s comments carefully.
D
Over the past year, the Chicago Department of Transportation has completed 10 safety projects focused on protecting pedestrians (行人) and cyclists, particularly young people. These measures were introduced in response to accidents involving youth. Teens involved with West Town Bike — a nonprofit that runs cycling programs for students — have voiced concerns about cycling safety while also proposing concrete ideas for improvement.
Many of these students expressed mixed feelings about biking in the city: while they value the sense of freedom, they often do not feel safe. Their suggestions range from infrastructural (基础设施的) upgrades to educational initiatives. For example, David Harb from Lane Tech High School stressed the importance of safety training, such as hand signals, and recommended expanding National Walk and Bike to School Day to include high schools. He also proposed replacing stop signs with roundabouts to naturally slow traffic.
Other students highlighted issues with enforcement and infrastructure. Kaniyah Hale believes drivers who cause collisions with cyclists or pedestrians should receive stronger punishment. Armand Dunkines, who was hit while riding where a bike lane suddenly ends, urged the city to use data to guide bike lane placement and increase traffic law enforcement, especially on weekends. Tamara Scott, both a cyclist and a new driver, pointed out that bike lanes are frequently blocked by cars, emphasizing that motorists must be reminded they are sharing the road.
Christopher Garcia, an experienced cyclist, imagines a redesigned road system with separate spaces for bicycles and cars, along with shared zones. Together, these teens agree that making Chicago’s streets safer will require not only physical changes but also a shift in culture and attitudes among all road users.
12. What is West Town Bike according to the text?
A. A project on protecting pedestrians.
B. A school offering teens bike safety training.
C. An official department managing traffic safety.
D. An organization running free cycling programs.
13. What can be inferred about students’ views from paragraph 2?
A. Biking safety must be ensured.
B. Steps count in reducing infrastructure costs.
C. Safety training outweighs facility upgrades.
D. Stop signs effectively slow down traffic flow.
14. Why does the author mention Armand Dunkines’ accident?
A. To call on motorists to follow the rules.
B. To complain about the lack of bike lanes.
C. To show the benefits of law enforcement.
D. To criticize the poor design of infrastructure.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Teens’ Appeals for Safer Chicago Streets
B. Chicago’s New Traffic Rules for Cyclists
C. The History of Chicago Cycling Programs
D. Chicago’s Shift toward Fewer Car Accidents

The classroom fell quiet after the new girl named Sophia finished answering a question. Her words carried a strange accent (口音). Suddenly, a loud laugh broke the silence. Leo, the boy from the back row, was copying her accent perfectly. The room was filled with laughter. Sophia didn’t say a word. She just looked down, her ears turning red, and tried to write something in her notebook.
From that day on, Sophia became silent. She spoke only when called upon and spent every lunchtime alone in the library. Leo’s world was the opposite — full of friends, basketball, and noise. He soon forgot about the incident, but an invisible wall remained between them.
Then, on a rainy Tuesday after school, something unexpected happened. Leo had stayed late to practice basketball alone. Jumping for a score, he landed badly and fell heavily to the ground. He tried to stand up but failed again and again, pain shooting through his ankle.
Just then, Sophia walked past the court, her head buried in a book. She heard his sharp cry and looked up. Seeing Leo on the ground, she hesitated (犹豫) only a second before walking towards him. She didn’t smile or speak much. Silently, she helped him up, supporting his weight as they moved slowly across the wet court. Step by step, she guided him towards the school gate where he could call for help.
The next week, Leo returned to school on crutches (拐杖), struggling to move between desks. He couldn’t keep up with the lessons. One morning, he found a simple notebook waiting on his desk. Inside were perfect math notes, covering every topic he had missed, with clear explanations and example problems. At the top, in small, careful handwriting, was the only message: “The key points are underlined.” Leo looked around the classroom, wondering who had left this quiet gift.
注意:
1.写作词数应为150左右;

【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中的“If you think the risks are too big, there are better choices. One alternative is subscription boxes.(如果你认为风险太大,还有更好的选择。其中alternative是定制盒。)”可知,前文提到有更好的选择,后文紧接着介绍定制盒,因此“alternative”与前一句中的“choices”表意相近,意为“选择”。故选C项。

【答案】12. D 13. A 14. D 15. A

The activity aimed to show how modern technology can help preserve traditional culture. Visitors enjoyed exhibitions of digital relic images, 3D modeling, and virtual restoration of ancient buildings. Some experienced digital scanning and VR programs that brought old cultural relics to life.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1.写作词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
He turned to the first page of the notebook and looked at the name on it.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
He turned to the first page of the notebook and looked at the name on it. It was Sophia’s name, written in the same small and careful handwriting as the message. Leo’s heart sank suddenly, filled with deep guilt. He thought of the day he mocked her accent, the way she lowered her head in embarrassment, and how she had been alone every day since then. Yet she still helped him when he was in trouble, without a single complaint or mention of his past mistake. He clutched the notebook tightly, his eyes burning with regret, determined to apologize to her sincerely.
From that day on, Leo and Sophia’s relationship changed a lot. Leo gave up his playful and rude ways, and he often went to the library to accompany Sophia during lunchtime. He would ask her for help with math patiently, and in return, he helped her practice her spoken English to get rid of the strange accent. The invisible wall between them disappeared gradually. They became good friends, sharing joys and sorrows with each other. Leo finally realized that true friendship comes from kindness and respect, not mockery.
