According to a 2023 report by the Chimese short-video platform Douyin, the views for book-related

When you picture a farm,do you think of green fields and a big red barn? The farms of the future may
look very different from that. That's because farms do not have to be outside anymore. They also won't have
to be above ground. In London,100 feet below the streets there was a huge empty abandoned space. It was
unused for almost 70 years before it was turned into the world's first underground farm.
Richard Ballard and Steven Dring, founders of the company Growing Underground, thought it would be
an ideal spot to build a hydroponic (farm. After all, these types of farms are doing well in other
indoor spaces.
Founded in 2015,Growing Underground's farm grows microgreens and salad leaves using hydroponic
teennoiogy that grows piants in water but not soil.In fact, the company said that its hydroponic technoiogy
allows for the perfect pest-free(无害虫的)growing environment..
These methods save 70 percent less water than traditional field agriculture and all the nutrients are kept
within a closed circle system. They can grow the greens all year round because they are not affected by
weather or growing seasons.
But it is the LED lighting system that is the key to growing food underground.Ballard said,"Already,
LEDs allow the growers to change the flavor of the greens,as their sugars and starches develop differently
under different light spectrums(光谱).”
Right now,the company only sells greens with a lot of leaves because they are the only crops that grow
fast enough to be economically()feasible but Ballard believes that will change."As technologies
improve,you'll see soft fruits,cucumbers,peppers,"he said.
The company's goal is to keep food local. They say that all of the greens can be in your kitchen within
four hours of being picked. They currently sell to local restaurants and people who live in London, but they
hope to be entering the local retail markets soon.
32.What makes the underground farm possible?
A.The perfect environment.
B.The great demand for fruits.
C.The hydroponic technology.
D.The good weather condition.
33.What is the function of the LED lighting system?
A.To get rid of pests.
B.To make use of solar energy
C.To allow greens to grow rapidly.

When Jaron Casillas was very young, his parents discovered that he saw the world a bit differently:a
Texas sunrise for example.
One morning,Jaron's mom was driving him to school beneath an especially spectacular Texas sunrise.
She heard his little voice from the car seat behind her say,"Look,Mommy!Look at the beautiful green
sunshine!"She turned to look at it.The rising sun was so beautiful, flooding the earth with warmth and red
light.However,Jaron's mom was about to cry."Oh dear,my poor boy,"she thought.Without delay,the parents
rushed Jaron to the hospital for a check-up,which turned out to be color blindness.
On that fateful day,Jaron's parents were shocked to learn that their son was color blind-a condition
that affects a person's ability to see colors in the same way as others. There is no cure, but special glasses can
help individuals like Jaron distinguish between different colors.Unfortunately, these glasses are often too
expensive for most families to afford. The parents were sad,but Jaron remained calm and even comforted his
parents. He saw his condition as something special and decided to keep it a secret. However, his silence
caused him to feel left out when others talked about colors.
One day,during a class discussion,the teacher,Christina Hayes,asked the students to share a secret about
themselves.Working up his courage,Jaron revealed his condition to his classmates, explaining that he saw
gray instead of colors like purple, green, and blue. When the teacher asked if there was anything that could
help him,Jaron mentioned the special glasses, but noted that they were too expensive for his family.Hearing
Jaron's words, the teacher fought back tears and praised the boy for his bravery. The other students looked at
