Love letters written by a long-distance couple, a diary belonging to a teenage girl, and an old photo album are just a few of the hundreds of artifacts (手工制品) that Chelsey Brown has returned to their rightful owners. The heirloom (祖传遗物) hunter, who started this work in 2021, has helped people around the world get back their lost family treasures.
It all began when she was looking for nice old things at flea markets for her customers as a decorator. “My dad studies family history, so I’ve always felt connected to it. And it would break my heart every time I pass a box of family heirlooms at the flea market because I know that those things should be with the families they belong to,” said Chelsey.
“One day, I decided to use what my dad taught me and what I knew about researching, and see if I could start returning these artifacts to families.” When she finds an artifact with a name on it, Chelsey puts the name in genealogy (家谱) databases. She then looks through old public records, newspapers, wedding papers, cards, and other information to find the family of the original owner.
“Every single artifact has its own special story,” said Chelsey. “I actually like the letters and diaries best; you know, they can tell you things that no record ever could. I have probably come across every possible story you can think of.”
In addition to making an impact on the families who’ve received their relatives’ lost things, Chelsey’s work has also made her popular on social media. With more than 240,000 followers on TikTok, she’s able to share her love of. history with younger generations while telling the long-lost stories behind the artifacts she finds.
“I’m inspiring a new generation to get involved or to become more interested in history and family history,” she said. “It’s exciting to see where this project will be 10 years from now because I only see it growing.”
24. What inspired Chelsey to start the work of returning artifacts?
A. Her wish to satisfy her dad’s expectations.
B. Her plan to find her family’s lost heirlooms.
C. Her understanding of the value of heirlooms.
D. Her worry about the damage to old artifacts.
25. How do genealogy databases help with Chelsey’s work on artifacts?
A. By connecting her with suitable buyers.
B. By helping her reproduce them more conveniently.
C. By enabling determination of artifacts’ market value.
D. By aiding in identifying the original owners’ families.
26. Why does Chelsey especially like old letters and diaries?
A. They are usually kept in good condition. B. They include more details of the past.

Simple songs are used to teach children important life skills in fun ways. These songs have the power to affect your child’s life forever: you likely remember songs from your childhood that taught you life lessons and new words that you can probably still recall to this day. Likewise, the use of songs in everyday activities can improve your child’s ability to learn and memorize new information.
The rhythmic (有节奏的) structure of language is present in music and speech. When your child sings songs they will pick up on natural and unnatural rhythms. Pauses and stressed syllables (音节) or words are used in conversations to express emotion and stress key points. Songs and rhymes can be used to remember many kinds of information. Music floods into all areas of the brain, allowing itself to be stored in multiple memory locations. The ability to retain information is increased when the child stores memories into multiple areas.
Children learn language quicker through songs rather than lectures. Singing contributes to short-term phrase learning for unfamiliar terms. If your child is young, singing can be an excellent way to teach them unfamiliar words and phrases. These short-term memory exercises are repeated to turn the learned language into long-term memory.
Research has found a significant link between beat-keeping and the ability to read. When your child keeps a beat, they use the same parts of the brain that are responsible for hearing sounds of speech and linking them with letters.
There are small differences in spoken language that can greatly impact the ability to read in young children. Consonants (辅音) such as “b” and “p” can be difficult for a child to distinguish on paper, but their learned ability to associate small changes m songs can help them understand the difference between the consonants while reading.
28. Why do simple songs have a strong influence on children?
A. They develop deep thinking. B. They have lasting effects.
C. They improve singing skills. D. They teach special skills.
29. Why are songs helpful for children’s language learning?
A. They makes repetition achievable. B. They teaches difficult expressions.
C. They helps with long-term memory. D. They are more interesting than talks.
30. What might be the result if a child fails to keep a beat?
A. Less speaking fluency. B. Poor reading skills.
C. Bad writing habits. D. Loss of hearing.
31. What is the main topic of the passage?
A. Rhythms in language. B. Songs and brain areas.
C. Songs in child development. D. Songs and consonants.

It’s nothing new that you can find many files or services you can download or use from the Internet. The question is; Is download legal or not? In most cases the answer is negative, because sharing and download are illegal. Of course, you can find files for legal download, but you have to pay for them.
It seems innocent if you click on the download mark, but it isn’t. It should be compared with stealing in a store. Would you steal a magazine, an MP3 player or a car? Downloading files from the Internet is theft, and sharing files, once you have stolen them, only makes it worse. For example, if everybody only downloaded files, movies wouldn’t make money and the studios wouldn’t invest millions of dollars to make new ones.
Many people may think it better, easier and cheaper to download files. That is the main reason why Internet users prefer sharing something to buying them. In the modern world we love convenience and what could be more convenient than getting music, films and games without having to leave your house? You don’t need to pay for what you get, and you don’t have to wait until shops open or the CD/ DVD you want is posted to you. However, you could be in big trouble if you are caught. You could go to prison as a result of acting unlawfully, but so far only a tiny minority of people have been charged with downloading files illegally. The majority of people who download files for personal use will not get in trouble. And that’s why it’s important for people to understand what the long-term consequences are if they don’t want to pay for their music, films and TV, Will film and music companies still spend millions of dollars every year if they have no chance of making a profit? The-answer is plainly “no”
Finally I would like to say that the Internet offers a lot of paid services, but people will always try to get them for free. To summarize my thoughts, I’d like to highlight the view that illegal download is both unfair to producers and dangerous for those who practice this kind of activity. You have to decide whether to buy or download things.
32. What can be inferred from paragraph 2?
A. Sharing files on the Internet is dangerous.
B. Sharing files on the Internet can make a profit.
C. Download makes movies more popular.
D. Downloading free files is as illegal as stealing.
33. Why do lots of people choose to download files for free online?
A. Because they don’t think they may be charged by the producers.
B. Because they follow others’ examples to do such things.
C. Because they think it is legal, convenient and simple to do so.
D. Because they think everything on the Net can be shared by others.
34. What does the underlined word “highlight” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Stress. B. Explain. C. Admit. D. Deny.
35. What is the main purpose of the author in writing this passage?
A, He advises readers to download legal files.
B. He asks readers to limit the amount of free download.
C. He tells readers how to avoid being charged with downloading files illegally.
D. He wants to make it clear that downloading files for free is against the law.

In the past few years, online learning has become an important part of the university and college experience. 36 But are all online courses created equal? How can you be sure that digital learning is right for you? 37 We interviewed students and professors to get their advice about online courses.
The most obvious advantage of online learning is that you can study anywhere and anytime, 38 “I think a point that many people lose sight of is how easy it can be to fall behind schedule,” says graduate student Amanda Bindman. Before choosing to study online, consider whether you’re a self-inspired learner and if the material seems interesting enough to keep you going.
The tip that comes up most often is simple: build online courses into your weekly schedule, just like what you would do with in-person courses. 39 He noted that his online students usually end up with lower grades. It is so easy to let an online course slide, but your grades will suffer as a result. Be sure to schedule set-times to watch your lectures, read materials and contribute to online discussion boards.
40 A social connection is often a big part of learning. There are things you can do to ease this problem. Jessica Pink, an undergraduate student, suggests taking online courses with a friend, so you can inspire each other to stay on track. You can also find students on the class discussion board to organize a study group, or schedule in-person meetings with your professor to discuss course concepts.
A. Your motivation should be your main concern.
B. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t deadlines (截止日期).
C. Do you know that online courses are also part of your education?
D. Professor Alex Davidson teaches the same course in person and online.
E. If you take an online course, what can you do to ensure the best possible grade?
F. A survey found that 29 percent of college students registered for online courses.
G. The chief complaint (抱怨) about online courses is that they are short of human communication.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy would ask for: a cell phone. I lived on that phone all summer. I always texted my friends, even at night. And I paid no attention to the people and things around myself. Being connected to the Internet was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when the time came for our family vacation that year. It was not the Disneyland trip or beach vacation that I had been hoping for. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special, something I used to do with my dad when I was a kid, We’re going camping in the forest!”
His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh (叹气), which was my communication style at that age. But he had made the decision and would not change his mind. I comforted myself by telling myself that it was still a vacation. I remained uninfluenced while they were busy preparing for the vacation.
My mind was on my phone, the texts flying back and forth. I focused on the screen in my hands so much that the first time I looked up was when we drove across a bridge on the trip to our campsite.
I looked out of the window and saw a fast-moving river. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot and smelled of trees. But that didn’t matter to me. The reason why I had looked up was something far more serious and annoying. My phone no longer had service. The signal was weak. During the last hour of the drive, there was no signal at all.
