Of all the Chinese 24 solar terms, Clear and Bright (清明) is the only one whose first day is also a traditional Chinese festival, the Qingming Festival. The words “clear” and “bright” describe the weather during this period. Temperatures begin to rise and rainfall increases, making it an important time for growing crops in the spring. As is known, it is a time to worship ancestors, however, here are several things you may not know about Clear and Bright.
Spring Outings
Not only is it a period to honor the dead, but it is also time for people to go out and enjoy nature. As trees turn green, flowers blossom, and the sun shines brightly, everything returns to life. It is a fine time to appreciate the beauty of nature.
Flying Kites
Flying kites is an activity favored by many Chinese during Tomb-Sweeping Day. Kites are not only flown during the day time but also in the evening. Little lanterns are tied to the kites. And when the kites are flying in the sky, the lanterns look like twinkling stars at night. What makes flying kites during this day special is that people cut the string while the kite is in the sky to let it fly freely. It is said that this brings good luck and that diseases can be chased away by doing this.
Cuju
Cuju is an interesting game played during this period. Ju is a ball made of leather with hairs plugged in it. Legend has it that the Yellow Emperor first invented it for training warriors. Later, Cuju was used by people to build up their bodies when they were unable to eat hot food during the Cold Food Festival.
Feasting on Qingtuan
In the lower parts of the Yangtze River region, qingtuan is very popular on Tomb-Sweeping Day. Qingtuan is a kind of round green cake. In order to make the cakes, people mash (捣碎) barnyard grass (艾草) to squeeze juice from it and mix the flour and juice to a paste. Then they put fillings into the paste and steam them. Pretty and delicate, qingtuan has a special flavor.

When people talk about American popular music, they don’t just mean country music or rock music. There are two other types of popular music with national and international appeal that are basically American. One is jazz. The other is a musical form associated with New York City theaters.
Jazz dates from African religious and folk music. The themes and songs of jazz music have historical origins. They come from songs sung by black Americans in church or at work. There have been different kinds of jazz music: bebop, ragtime, swing, boogie-woogie and others.
In playing jazz music, the performers combine rhythms and songs with their skills of improvisation (即兴创作). Modern jazz music has developed into a complex musical style enjoyed more by musicians and older jazz lovers than by the general public.
American theater has developed another American musical style. It is associated with a street in New York City, Broadway. Broadway musicals are dramatic productions in which the story is told partly by dialogue and partly through songs. The lyrics of these songs give background information about the story and express the feelings of the characters in the story. Many Broadway musicals have been made into movies that have been shown all over the world. Oklahoma, Sound of Music, My Fair Lady and West Side Story are some good examples.
Songs from these musicals and others have translations in various languages that are sung around the world. Many of them have become popular with people who have not even seen the musicals for which they were written.
4. What does jazz belong to?
A. Rock music. B. Country music.
C. Traditional music. D. American popular music.
5. What can we learn about jazz from Paragraph 2?
A. Its playing method. B. Its popularity.

6. Which of the following best describes modern jazz music?

When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns.
In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art O-level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so authoritative that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
8. How did the author feel about the result of the art exam?
A. Scared. B. Worried. C. Discouraged. D. Wronged.
9. In her 30s, the author _________.
A. avoided oil painting practice B. sought for a painting career
C. fancied abstract painting D. exhibited child paintings
10. Which word would best describe the author’s dream?
A. Confusing. B. Empowering.
C. Disturbing. D. Entertaining.
11. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Actions speak louder than words. B. Hard work is the mother of success.
C. Dreams are the reflections of realities. D. Creative activities involve being confident.
【答案】8. C 9. A 10. B 11. D

推理判断题。根据第二段“I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.(我觉得很难,但仍希望能通过测试。我没有通过,而且成绩很低。我过于自信了。现在,我被宣布为毫无(油画)天赋的人了)”并结合下文中作者多年不碰油画的经历可推知,作者对美术考试的结果感到气馁。故选C。

Chinese architect Liu Jiakun, born in Chengdu in 1956, has been awarded the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize, often called the “Nobel Prize of architecture.” His childhood memories of exploring the brick hospital where his mother worked as a doctor deeply influenced his architectural vision. From the rooftop, he observed Chengdu’s mix of traditional wooden homes and modern buildings — a balance that later inspired his design philosophy.
After graduating in 1982, Liu worked in an architecture firm but struggled to balance his architectural work with his comparatively stronger passion for writing. He described this period as having “two identities.” However, writing has given him more perspectives to observe society and human behavior, which enriches his architectural work. These days, Liu said, he sees similarities between the two: both sharing similar vocabularies like beginnings, build-ups, climaxes, and endings.
Liu also applies this vocabulary to busy public spaces. His West Village commercial complex, built in Chengdu in 2015, fills an entire old block with modern buildings, bike paths, monuments and walkways for pedestrians. A 2020 art exhibition praised it as “translating traditional Chinese cultural ethos (精髓) into contemporary architectural language”.
Perhaps nothing sums up Liu’s approach more effectively than the “recycled bricks” he formed after the 2008 Sichuan earthquake destroyed entire villages northwest of Chengdu. To help with rebuilding, Liu made bricks, using straw and the rubble (碎砖瓦) left from the fallen buildings. “You can see history in each brick,” he said, adding that their production stopped after there was no more debris (残骸). “But in the world, as long as there are disasters like earthquakes, we can always find a use for recycled bricks.”
12. What inspired Liu Jiakun’s architectural philosophy during his childhood?
A. His mother’s medical career.
B. Studying ancient Chinese literature.
C. Designing hospitals with brick materials.
D. His observations from the hospital rooftop.
13. How did Liu’s passion for writing influence his architectural work?
A. It limited his creativity in public spaces.
B. It expanded his vocabulary in architecture.
C. It provided him with broader social perspectives.
D. It almost caused him to lose a professional identity.
14. Which aspect of West Village complex best reflects Liu’s design philosophy?
A. Its use of recycled construction materials.
B. Its function as an ideal space for art exhibitions.
C. Its emphasis on high-profit commercial activities.
D. Its application of traditional cultural elements to modern architecture.
15. What does Liu imply by saying “you can see history in each brick” in paragraph 4?
A. The bricks contain ancient texts.
B. The bricks are designed to last for centuries.
C. The bricks reflect the destruction of modern cities.
D. The bricks physically show fragments of fallen buildings.
【答案】12. D 13. C 14. D 15. D

PE classes weren’t always easy for Eva. While her classmates raced across the sports field or scored basketball points, Eva often fell behind. She wasn’t as fast or as agile (敏捷的), and she’d always shrink to the sidelines, pretending to tie her shoelaces just to avoid attention.
One day, during a timed running test. Eva tripped and fell hard on the track. She managed to stand up and kept running, but still failed to pass in the end. When the PE teacher announced the grades, a few students laughed, and Eva’s cheeks burned with embarrassment.
Later that afternoon, when Eva went to the restroom, she heard her classmate Sandra say, “Bet Eva can’t even finish one lap without gasping like a fish.” The other students agreed, adding more hurtful comments. Tears welled up in Eva’s eyes, and all she wanted was to disappear.
That evening, Eva’s mother noticed something was wrong because Eva had eaten almost nothing. After some gentle questions, Eva finally told her mother what had happened. Her mother listened quietly, then hugged her and said, “Everyone has their own pace, Eva. What matters isn’t how fast you run, but that you never give up.”
The next day after school, Eva’s mother surprised her with a pair of bright red running shoes. “Let’s train together,” she suggested with a smile. At first, Eva was hesitant. The thought of running again filled her with anxiety, but the look of encouragement on her mother’s face gave her the courage to say yes. Then they laced up their shoes and stepped outside. From that day on, they jogged around their neighborhood almost every afternoon. Although Eva grew tired in the beginning, her mother always cheered her on. “You’re doing great! One step at a time!” Slowly, Eva’s stamina (耐力) improved, and she even began to enjoy their runs.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
A few weeks later, the PE class held another running test.

Everyone was surprised at Eva’s progress, including Sandra.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】A few weeks later, the PE class held another running test. Eva took a deep breath as she stood at the starting line, her bright red shoes gleaming under the sun. The memory of her last failure flashed through her mind, but she pushed it away, focusing instead on her mother’s encouraging words that her mother had said to her. When the whistle blew, Eva ran steadily, her strides confident. Though others sprinted ahead, she maintained her pace, just as she had practiced. By the final lap, her endurance surprised even herself — she wasn’t gasping for air but running with determination. As she crossed the finish line, the teacher announced, “Eva, you passed!”
Everyone was surprised at Eva’s progress, including Sandra. Sandra stared, her earlier mockery replaced by disbelief. After class, she approached Eva hesitantly. “How did you do that?” she asked. Eva smiled, wiping sweat from her forehead. “I practiced every day,” she replied. Sandra’s expression softened. “That’s… impressive.” From that day on, the teasing stopped, and some classmates even asked Eva for running tips. Eva realized that perseverance, not speed, had earned their respect — and more importantly, her own.

C
D

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
