“What do you think I should do?” asks your friend, as she sits beside you, waiting for your advice. This is no easy situation. Say something your friend disagrees with or something helpless, and you might feel you’ve disappointed her.
It’s human nature to want to offer solutions when someone comes to you with a problem. It’s also easy to fall into the trap of simply saying that “Everything will be OK”. 21 But we often say that because we believe we need to say something. This is because we’re glad that our friend has come to us for help, even if we don’t really think we’re able to give it. 22 The answer is yes... if it’s done in the right way.
In fact, friends often really only want someone to listen to them. It’s important to try to work out whether they’re actually asking for advice, or simply wanting to talk over whatever is going round in their head. 23 There’s no harm in asking whether they’d like you to give suggestions.
It’s also important to be honest. If you’re unable to think of a way to solve your friends’ problem, just say so. Your friends won’t feel upset, and you can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in their shoes. 24 You can ask yourself “What would I do if I were to experience the same thing?” Later you can go back to your friends with a few helpful suggestions.
25 It can be hard to listen to your friends going over and over the same thing without being able to help them. They will certainly be thankful if you just allow them to “talk it out”, though. Maybe they’re building up courage to take action, and need to convince (说服) themselves they’re doing the right thing. Just being there for them may be all you have to do to make things better.
A.Friendship is the most important to us.
B.This is not actually useful for your friend.
C.So is it a good idea to try to give advice at all?
D.You can find someone else to ask for their ideas.
E.Sometimes a problem doesn’t go away overnight.
F.Talking may make people feel better all by themselves.
G.Then you can go away and try to think of something helpful.
21.根据上文“It’s also easy to fall into the trap of simply saying that ‘Everything will be OK’.”
22.根据下文“The answer is yes...”
23.根据“In fact, friends often really only want someone to listen to them.”
24.根据上文“you can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in their shoes”和下文“...Later you can go back to your friends with a few helpful suggestions.”
25.根据下文“to listen to your friends going over and over the same thing”和“Maybe they’re building up courage to take action, and need to convince (说服) themselves they’re doing the right thing.”

We often hear of people who make long journeys to different parts of the world, with some even making it all the way to space. However, the biggest journey one can make is within oneself. The self-discovery journey helps you feel more confident and at peace with yourself. Then, how do you start your journey of self-discovery? 21
You may start with finding out what you like most about yourself. It could be about how creative you are about your ability to care about others or about your skills in playing an instrument or a sport. This will help you know better about your personal values or abilities.
Knowing what makes you excited is also helpful. What makes your eyes light up? 22 It could be when you are performing a dance on stage, when you help your dad fix his computer, or even when you are doing research on your school science project.
It is always more comfortable to be on familiar (熟悉的) ground. However, in order to discover yourself you will need to put yourself in some uncomfortable situations. 23 This may make you feel nervous, but it will give you a chance to learn more about how you feel and think when challenged.
What is your true purpose in life? 24 As you go about your daily activities, ask yourself these questions to learn about your true self. Such questioning will help you to think deeply and realize what kind of person you want to be.
25 As you go through life, the experiences can change you, and this helps you grow. As Ariana Huffington said, “The journey towards self-discovery is life’s greatest adventure.”
A.It’s never too late to learn.
B.Who or what do you want to be?
C.As the saying goes, “Life is short.”
D.The following may be of some help to you.

We all love spending time by the sea. Some lucky ones might live on the coast and enjoy the benefits (益处) all around the year. 71 Most of us would say we feel healthier by the ocean. In the past, doctors would actually suggest spending time by the sea to their patients. And research has shown that people who live on the coast are more likely to believe their health is good compared to those living in a city. So how do we benefit, exactly?
Well, to start with, it’s great for our mental (心理) health. Scientists have discovered that we have something called a blue mind. They have shown that watching, listening to the waves (海浪) or being in the ocean helps our brains slow down. 72 This is why people who have trouble sleeping are often told to listen to recordings of the sound of waves hitting the beach to help them relax at bedtime.
73 We go out a lot more when we’re on holiday by the sea. We often become more active on holidays and people who live on the coast are usually more active too. 74 Walking on sand requires more effort than on the pavement. And the sea air is good for people with breathing problems too. There is less pollution in the air near the ocean and in autumn and winter the air is fresher. This is healthier than the dry air in homes with central heating. It has even been found that the chemicals in sea water may help us have healthy skin.
75 We look forward so much to having our next one!
A.Breathing the air in the city makes you more active.
B.Others usually have to wait for the next vacation.
C.Being by the sea is also good for our physical health.
D.Kids especially like to have fun by the sea in summer.

Because of modern medicine, millions of people now live longer, healthier lives, and we are developing new ways to fight diseases (疾病) all the time. 26
In the past, most people worked on their feet and moved their bodies all day, so they had lots of exercise. 27 Today, many people sit in front of a computer all day at work, and often eat a lot of sweet foods, or foods that are made in factories. This can be a big danger to their health.
The disease that causes most deaths in the world today—three in every ten—is heart disease. But many of these deaths need not happen, and are caused because people have not exercised or eaten well enough. Not exercising, or eating unhealthy food, can sometimes cause another dangerous disease-diabetes (糖尿病). 28 In the last twenty years, there has been a big rise in the number of deaths from diabetes.
Smoking is another very big health problem and it causes more than seven million deaths a year. There are lots of very dangerous chemicals in cigarettes (香烟), so smokers can get many diseases. Around the world, fewer people smoke today than twenty years ago, but there were still more than 1.2 billion smokers in 2025. 29 Nearly half of all the children in the world are taking cigarette smoke into their bodies every day because they have to spend time near people who smoke.
30 When people sit for too long in front of a computer, they can get problems with their eyes, arms, necks, and backs. And when they use computers and cell phones at night, it is often more difficult for them to sleep. Some scientists also think that cell phones may cause health problems because of a kind of energy which they produce called radiation (辐射).

Here are some things you may want to think about when designing your stadium.
The first step of the invention process is to “think it”. This includes finding a problem you would like to solve, or imagining something you plan to create. 21 , “What problem does it solve? What sports or events will take place in your stadium? Where will it be located? How will your idea be new and different?”
The next step is to “explore it”. You ask: “How have inventors created solutions in the past?” and then carry out research to learn more about the problem they would like to solve, or the idea they would like to create. This is done to understand solutions that may already exist. 22 .
Inventors use drawing as a way to organize their ideas. 23 . You can draw your ideas with paper and pencil or use any means of expression that is comfortable for you. Remember! Inventors seldom get it right on the first try.
24 Build a model which will show the size, shape and form of your stadium. Now that you have created your 3 D model, take some time to think about how your stadium looks and how it would work for an event.
Now it’s time to think about how it would work, and share your idea with others. Ask yourself, “What changes can I make to improve my stadium?” Sharing an idea also happens when you present your idea to others after you have made your final changes.
Inventors typically don’t succeed with an invention on the first try. Usually, inventors change their ideas many times before they are finished to make them work better. 25 , once changes are made. It can take many tries to make your ideas work or look the way you imagined they would.
A.To get started you can ask yourself
B.Inventors test their inventions again
C.Now it is time to see their idea turn into something real

They are very important.
(1) 表示转折让步关系:but、yet、however、although、instead、though、while、whereas、despite等。
(2) 表示并列递进关系:and、or、also、besides、even、similarly、in the same way、meanwhile、furthermore、moreover等。
(3) 表示因果关系:therefore、thus、as a result、for this reason、of course等。
(4) 表示解析、举例关系:for example、for instance、that is to say、in other words、that means等。
Passage 1
“Don’t try to change me,” 1 It is often used by people who regard change as a kind of attack (攻击) on their identity (身份). Any suggestion of improvement or an idea of reading a self-help book seems like they are not being accepted just the way they are. But is there a person in this world who never changes during their whole life?
If you think about it, change is something that is happening to us every day. Our experiences and the challenges we face, the people we meet, and the things we watch, read or hear all influence us, making us change gradually. 2 I believe that intentional (有意的) change in the form of self-improvement is something to be proud of.
3 We don’t trust the things that we know little about because we are not sure about the result they will bring. After years of being stuck in the same habits and patterns of thinking, we may be afraid of breaking the normal way we do things.
How does one break this cycle? 4 In order for anyone to change, they have to truly want it and make that decision on their own. Once they do, what they need is to find good ways to make an achievement. 5 Think about what can be done differently in the future instead of repeating the same behaviors and expecting a different result.
A.Perhaps changing makes us uneasy.
B.Another, probably more common way is to learn from experiences.
C.You may feel great after changing yourself.
D.Because life is not always staying the same.
E.You surely have heard it in many situations during your life.
F.It can only be done through a decision to change something.
G.We should keep this in mind.
【答案】1.E 2.D 3.A 4.F 5.B
1.根据前句“Don’t try to change me.”这一具体表述,以及后文“It is often used by people who regard change as a kind of attack on their identity.” E“You surely have heard it in many situations during your life.”
2.前文指出“change is happening to us every day...making us change gradually”,说明改变是日常且渐进的;后句“I believe that intentional change...is something to be proud of”表达积极态度。 D“Because life is not always staying the same.”
3.后文“We don’t trust the things that we know little about...afraid of breaking the normal way...” A“Perhaps changing makes us uneasy.”
4.前句“How does one break this cycle?”提出问题,后句“In order for anyone to change, they have to truly want it and make that decision on their own.” F“It can only be done through a decision to change something.”中“It”指代“break this cycle”,“only be done through a decision”与后文“make that decision on their own”高度一致,是直接回答问题的核心句。
5.根据前文“Once they do, what they need is to find good ways to make an achievement.”提到的“找到实现改变的好方法”,以及后文“Think about what can be done differently in the future instead of repeating the same behaviors”对具体方法的说明可知,此处应补充另一种实现改变的方式。选项B“Another, probably more common way is to learn from experiences.”中“Another way”承接前文“find good ways”,“learn from experiences”对应后文“反思过去行为、调整未来做法”,结构完整。

G.This will tell you where your true joy comes from.

In our daily life, while we look for happiness, we may often end up with bad feelings. Here is some advice on beating those low spirits.
21 When you have a conversation with your friends, they can understand how you feel. This can make you feel happy again. It also helps you see yourself in positive (积极的) ways, so you can get back to being who you want to be.
Get out of the house. 22 That’s OK, but at least let yourself walk to a place that is beautiful or a place that brings you some peace. A change of fresh air will help you feel better.
Watch a comedy. When you’re sad, you don’t want to laugh. But the cycle of sadness must be broken so you can get back to your normal life. 23
Smile. When you smile, there will be chemicals (化学物质) in your brain that make you want to smile more and make you feel better. 24 People will smile back, and that will make you happier.
25 Please give yourself a chance. You’d be surprised at how easy it is to feel better when you do things to help yourself.
A.Talk with friends.
B.Make new friends.
C.Go to a public place and wear a smile.
D.The more you smile, the happier you will feel.
E.These ideas above are to make you feel happy.
F.And watching a comedy is a very easy way to start it.
G.Going out can be hard if you don’t want to be around people.

E.Naturally we often feel so great at the end of a seaside holiday.
F.The sound of them can help us relax and feel free from stress.
G.And if you take your walks on the beach, this is a lot better.

Maybe you want to exercise more or start going to bed earlier in the coming year. 21
·Make a detailed(详细的)plan.
If your New Year’s plan is to exercise five days each week, a plan like “I’ll exercise on weekdays” would not be clear. A detailed plan like “I’ll exercise at school on weekdays during my lunch break” would be better. 22
·Make it fun.
If it’s not fun to exercise or study, you won’t keep it easily. 23 If you can only drink your favourite juice during study hours, you’ll look forward to studying.
· 24
Tell a few friends about your goals so you’ll feel a deep sense of shame if they check back later and find out you haven’t followed through.
·Give yourself more chances.
You planned to get to bed early every night, but one Friday you stayed up late. 25 But giving yourself one or two more chances can help you get better results.
A.Make more friends.
B.Get a little help from your friends.
C.Maybe you’re going to take up a hobby like painting.
D.Here is some advice that can help you keep your goals.
E.After that, you may want to give up the early-to-bed plan.
F.But if you get fun from your exercise or study, you’ll keep longer.
G.All in all, you should give all the facts or information about something in your plan.

Celebrate Your Achievements
A study has found that achievements make the brain think clearly and work well. Celebrating even your small achievements can help you to feel more confident.

Studies show that when you celebrate achievements, your brain becomes active and you feel better about yourself. This makes you encouraged and keep positive. 24
How can you reward (奖励) yourself?
Try making an achievement jar (罐子) where you put a coin every time you succeed in something. When the jar is full, reward yourself. 25 These things are interesting and relaxing. Share your wins with family and friends, too, so they can support you.

A.This is not just a health problem for cigarette smokers.
B.But in a changing world, there are changing health problems.
C.When someone has diabetes, there is too much sugar in their blood.
D.They also mostly ate natural foods like fruit, vegetables, fish, and meat.

D.Once you have created your design, move on to the next step
E.It allows inventors to imagine what their invention might look like and how it will work
F.They learn from what others have tried and make sure that their solutions are new or different
