A
Climate change could have large impacts on food production across the world. Rising Temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in warmer areas. Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO₂ in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures.
Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways:
A recent study by experts modeled three adaptation methods — changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing both of them. The chart below shows their impact on the output of corn, rice, sorghum, soybean (大豆) and wheat.
These three adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in some countries. But, of course, we don’t only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure — cannot adapt to climate change, this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future.
1. What should farmers change if they are short of money and labour?
A. WHAT. B. WHERE. C. WHEN. D. HOW.
2. Which crop may benefit most if farmers plant improved varieties?
A. Corn. B. Rice. C. Sorghum. D. Wheat.
3. What should be done in the future?
A. To move to colder regions. B. To adopt the three methods.
C. To focus on crop production. D. To help the farmers in need.

August Lamm, a writer, artist and former art influencer, hasn’t owned a smartphone since 2022. Her journey to give up the smartphone began shortly after graduating from college, when she started posting pictures of her art online and got hundreds of thousands of followers. “Everything that I shared online — all these pictures and words about my love life, my vacations or my house — was feeding into my business, helping to generate sales,” Lamm said. Finally, she said, the pressure to keep that up became too much, and she reached a breaking point.
At first, Lamm tried to put her phone in a drawer and avoid using it for a whole day, which, she said, made life inconvenient for everyone around her. It took her about a year to quit her smartphone and fully devote herself to the dumbphone lifestyle, which offers only basic calling and texting.
Still, there are certain things that may feel impossible to deal with without smartphones, since they are more than just texting and surfing social media. In 2025, these smartphones function as virtual wallets, health trackers, identification tools, and even personal assistants. However, Lamm has found solutions to the challenges. “You work out these problems by asking,” Lamm said, “like asking the parking company if they can offer you an alternative when you can’t use parking meter (停车收费表), and a lot of the time they will.”
When it comes to her career, Lamm says she earns more money now than she ever did as an influencer online. That’s because now she only does the actual work, rather than spending hours and hours crafting posts. “When I stopped posting, I found out income sources that existed before social media: agencies, magazines, galleries, publishers,” she said. “If I hadn’t spent thousands of hours trying to build a huge following, I could have spent that time going to galleries, taking classes, meeting people, making connections, organizing events, taking part in exhibitions and otherwise making a name for myself in the real world. I could have improved more quickly if I had not placed online popularity above creative development.”
4. What made August Lamm decide to give up the smartphone?
A. Her addiction to the smartphone.
B. The stress from social networking.
C. Her pressure from the busy college life.
D. Her concern over the downsides of technology.
5. Why does the author mention the situations in 2025 in paragraph 3?
A. To explain why smartphones are developing very fast.
B. To advise people to depend less on modern technology.
C. To show the wide use of virtual wallets and health trackers.
D. To stress the important roles smartphones play in daily life.
6. How can we best describe August Lamm according to the text?
A. Confident and demanding.
B. Creative and ambitious.
C. Determined and adaptable.
D. Generous and efficient.
7. What message does August Lamm want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Social media do more harm than good.
B. Dumbphones are making a comeback.
C. Use smartphones only when necessary.
D. One can be less dependent on social media.
C
We already know how watching other people’s lives on social media can negatively affect our self-esteem (自尊) and satisfaction with our own lives. Apparently, using apps to track your own calories or fitness activities can have a similar effect. New research from scientists at University College London (UCL) suggests that fitness apps can actually become major demotivators.
The researchers analyzed nearly 60,000 posts on the X platform. This data is particularly valuable because unlike traditional surveys, people tend to share honest, unfiltered (直白真实的) opinions online. The posts included feedback on popular apps, such as MyFitnessPal. Around 13,000 posts contained negative keywords the researchers tracked — and over half mentioned the calorie-counting app MyFitnessPal.
At first glance, MyFitnessPal seems to offer everything you need to stay on top of your fitness and diet. It allows users to track calorie intake, monitor proteins, and set personalized goals. You can simply import recipes or scan bar codes from food packages — the app will do the rest offering you guidance on what and when to eat. It sounds like working with a personal dietitian.
However, many people are not necessarily that gratified by it. Senior author Dr. Paulina Bondaronek explained, “In these posts, we found a lot of blame and shame, with people feeling they were not doing as well as they should be. These emotional effects may end up harming people’s motivation and health.”
MyFitnessPal is also pretty easy to “fool”, since it’s up to users whether to log or skip a meal. This creates a false sense that if something isn’t recorded in the app, it “didn’t happen”. Many admitted cheating (e.g., not recording a post-dinner cup of ice cream) to feel better, but this only led to more guilt. In some cases, people quit the app and their healthy habits altogether.
It’s important to note the study only analyzed negative posts, so there’s no scientifically proven data on fitness apps’ benefits. However, their drawbacks are hard to ignore. This is a clear wake-up call for developers to consider their products’ unintended consequences.
8. What do we know about MyFitnessPal?
A. It tracks health through exercise data.
B. It provides personalized dietitian services.
C. It automatically records every meal intake.
D. It may cause the discontinuation of healthy practices.
9. What do the underlined words “gratified by” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Puzzled about. B. Satisfied with.
C. Astonished at. D. Concerned about.
10. What is the author’s attitude towards fitness apps?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Convinced. D. Indifferent.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Fitness Apps: Unexpected Harms
B. Fitness Apps: A Double-edged Sword
C. Social Media: A Threat to Self-esteem and Health
D. MyFitnessPal: A Convenient Tool for Diet Control
D
An electronic “tongue” that can potentially replicate (复制) human preferences for certain foods is in development. This breakthrough comes as researchers aim to integrate emotional intelligence into artificial intelligence (AI).
AI has advanced significantly over the years. However, its current models don’t involve human psychology, such as emotional intelligence.“The main focus of our work was how we could bring the emotional part of intelligence to AI,” says Saptarshi Das, associate professor at the Pennsylvania State University (Penn State). “Human behaviour is easy to observe but difficult to measure and that makes it difficult to replicate in a robot and make it emotionally intelligent. There is no real way right now to do that.”
Eating habits serve as a prime example of this emotional intelligence. While hunger is the physiological drive to eat, our choices of what to eat are influenced by our sense of taste. As Das explains, even when one is not hungry, the psychological desire can drive him or her to consume a sweet treat, rather than a piece of meat.
To grasp the complicated details of taste, Penn State researchers looked to the human tongue, which translates chemical data into electrical signals sent to the brain’s gustatory cortex In this brain region, complex neuronal networks shape our sense of taste. To imitate this, the team created an electronic “tongue”.
This technology can be adapted to recognize all primary taste profiles, from sweet and salty to umami (鲜味). Looking ahead, the researchers see numerous applications, including AI-designed diets based on emotional preferences or tailored restaurant meal suggestions.
The team’s immediate goal is to expand the electronic tongue’s capacity. “We are trying to imitate the 10,000 or so taste receptors we have on our tongue that are each slightly different compared to the others, which enables us to distinguish between small differences in tastes,” says Das. “The example I think of is people who train their tongue and become a wine taster. Perhaps in the future, we can have an AI system that you can train to be an even better wine taster.”
Beyond taste, the team wants to broaden this concept to other senses, leading to a more comprehensive and emotionally intelligent AI system.
12. What can be learnt from paragraph 2?
A. It is by no means tough to assess human behavior.
B. It is necessary to make robots emotionally intelligent.
C. Emotional intelligence is complex and difficult to observe.
D. Researchers struggle to create emotionally intelligent AI.
13. What might this electronic “tongue” be applied to in the future?
A. Evaluating people’s diet plans.
B. Helping restaurants serve customers better.
C. Designing a healthier diet plan for people.
D. Correcting people’s poor dietary preferences.
14. What is the team’s plan according to the last two paragraphs?
A. Bringing more human senses into the AI system.
B. Making the electronic “tongue” available for everyone.
C. Attracting the attention of other researchers to AI’s innovation.
D. Improving people’s taste sensitivity with the electronic “tongue”
15. What is the text mainly about?
A. AI’s development trend in the future.
B. The electronic tongue’s advantages.
C. AI’s big role in developing emotional intelligence.
D. The electronic tongue’s bridging emotional intelligence and AI.

Missy was absolutely my best friend in the whole world. We had known each other since first grade, and we literally did everything together. We frequently visited each other’s homes, we knew each other’s families like they were our own. The interesting thing about our relationship, however the fact was that the older we got, the more our values seemed to differ. We still enjoyed a lot of the same things, but I was a bit more settled while she loved being associated with popular people and things. Although she was basically a good person, she had no problem with forcing things to go her way.
Perhaps this is why it seemed that her family actually trusted me more than they trusted her. So, on the day when Missy showed up at my house with a huge dent (凹痕) in her father’s car, I knew that we were in for a troublesome time.
She had banged the car into a tree while out that day, and she knew her father was going to have an explanation. So she stopped by my house in order to make up a story that would lessen her father’s rage. Missy decided to tell him that while in a parking lot, someone must have backed into the car and dented it. Looking at the dent with some crashed leaves and bark still sticking there, I attempted to perish (打消) her thought. “I don’t think your father will buy it.” “ Don’t worry,” she insisted,“even if my dad doesn’t trust me, he’ll trust you.” My role was to confirm for her. Now keep in mind that I had strong objections to lying and I wanted absolutely nothing to do with the situation. I loved her parents just like my own, and I did not want to be a party to this lie that Missy was creating. Nevertheless, after much request and a general questioning of my loyalty to our friendship, I decided that the least I could do was to act as a silent witness. That way, I wasn’t actually lying; I just wasn’t telling the full truth.
Paragraph 1: An hour or so later, we presented Missy’s father with the car and the inquiry began.

B 5. D 6. C 7. D
根据第一段最后两句““Everything that I shared online — all these pictures and words about my love life, my vacations or my house — was feeding into my business, helping to generate sales,” Lamm said. Finally, she said, the pressure to keep that up became too much, and she reached a breaking point. (拉姆说:“我在网上分享的所有东西——所有这些关于我的感情生活、假期或房子的照片和文字——都在为我的生意服务,帮助带来销售额。”她说,最后,维持下去的压力变得太大,她到了崩溃的边缘。)”可知,拉姆因社交媒体分享带来的持续压力,最终决定放弃智能手机。故选B项。
【5题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段前两句“Still, there are certain things that may feel impossible to deal with without smartphones, since they are more than just texting and surfing social media. In 2025, these smartphones function as virtual wallets, health trackers, identification tools, and even personal assistants. (尽管如此,有些事情如果没有智能手机可能会觉得无法处理,因为它们的功能远不止发短信和刷社交媒体。到2025年,这些智能手机充当着虚拟钱包、健康追踪器、身份证明工具,甚至是个人助理。)”可知,作者提及2025年智能手机的多种功能,是为了说明人们的日常生活与智能手机联系紧密。这也服务于后文凸显拉姆放弃智能手机的不易。故选D项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段最后一句“It took her about a year to quit her smartphone and fully devote herself to the dumbphone lifestyle, which offers only basic calling and texting. (她花了大约一年时间来放弃智能手机,完全投入到只提供基本的通话和短信服务功能的非智能手机的生活方式中。)”和第三段第三句“However, Lamm has found solutions to the challenges. (不过,拉姆已经找到了应对这些挑战的办法。)”可知,拉姆花一年时间坚持放弃智能手机,且能解决无智能手机带来的难题,说明她有决心且适应能力强。故选C项。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段第三至五句““When I stopped posting, I found out income sources that existed before social media: agencies, magazines, galleries, publishers,” she said.
D 9. B 10. B 11. A
根据第五段最后一句“In some cases, people quit the app and their healthy habits altogether. (有时,人们会放弃这个应用,甚至连健康习惯也一起放弃。)”可知,因为弃用这个应用可能会导致健康习惯的中断。故选D项。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段前两句“However, many people are not necessarily that gratified by it. Senior author Dr. Paulina Bondaronek explained, “In these posts, we found a lot of blame and shame, with people feeling they were not doing as well as they should be.
但文章最后一段第一句“It’s important to note the study only analyzed negative posts, so there’s no scientifically proven data on fitness apps’ benefits.
故选A项。

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Her father looked at me with great disbelief.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
An hour or so later, we presented Missy’s father with the car and the inquiry began. Under a barrage of inquiries, Missy recapped her concocted story unhurriedly, while I stood there in silent agreement. After Missy finishing her seemingly perfect statement, her father raised his eyebrows and turned to me, waiting for my proof. However, once again, I chose silence under his scrutinizing eyes with my heart pounding violently. Suddenly, he walked over to the dented area for a closer inspection. It was at that point that pieces of bark from the tree that Missy had hit fell out.
Her father looked at me with great disbelief. An enormous sense of guilt rose up in me as his cold eyes seemed to proclaim me as the “guilty” bystander. I was so flustered that I wanted to explain but was interrupted by his harsh words, “You guys really failed me! Especially...” Instead of continuing his reproach, he took a deep breath and turned his back on me. It dawned on me that the precious but fragile trust had been smashed by my silence. In fact, the process of how we apologized to make amends was just a blur, but the bitter lesson of being a silent accomplice was branded on my memory.
