Step 2: Pre-reading—Vocabulary Learning (8 mins) Show & Learn Key Words Show word cards with pictures and Chinese meanings: escape v./n. to get away from danger 逃跑；逃脱 drill n. a practice activity 训练；演习 strategy n. a plan to succeed 策略；方法 calm adj. not excited 冷静的 protect v. to keep safe 保护 evacuate v. to move to safety 疏散；撤离 safety n. the state of being safe 安全 shake v. to move quickly up and down 摇晃 cover v. to put something over 遮盖 injured adj. hurt 受伤的 T leads reading; Ss read aloud in chorus and individually. Quick practice: Match words with meanings. Brainstorm Safety Words T: What other words do you know about safety? Ss: careful, danger, help, fire, earthquake... T writes useful words on the blackboard. Step 3: While-reading—Text Learning (12 mins) Fast Reading Ss read the text quickly and answer: Where did the escape drill happen? (At Fengcun School.) Cover your head with your hands! Hide under the desk! Evacuate quickly! Follow me! Go to the playground! Ss repeat and act out the sentences. Group Work: Make a Dialogue Divide Ss into groups of 4. Task: Make a short dialogue about "What to do in an escape drill" using new words and sentences. Example: A: What should we do in an earthquake? B: We should stay calm. C: Don't run or push. D: Let's cover our heads and evacuate quickly. Groups practice for 3 mins; then perform in class. Simulated Escape Drill (5 mins) T: Now let's do a real escape drill in the classroom!
