Passage 2
Conquering Nature: The Story of the Trans-Siberian Railway
Building the Trans-Siberian Railway was one of the greatest challenges in history. It is the longest railway in the world, stretching about 9,289 kilometres from Moscow to Vladivostok. The project began in 1891 and took over 25 years to complete.
Workers faced terrible conditions along the way. They had to build tracks through frozen ground, deep forests, and high mountains. In winter, temperatures dropped to -50°C, making it almost impossible to work outside. Many workers fell ill or died from cold and hard labour.
However, the Russian people were determined to complete the railway. They built bridges across huge rivers like the Ob and the Yenisei. They dug tunnels through the Ural Mountains. Bit by bit, they pushed forward despite all the difficulties.
Today, the Trans-Siberian Railway is not only a symbol of human determination but also an important link between Europe and Asia. It carries millions of passengers and tons of goods every year. As one engineer put it, “We didn’t just build a railway; we conquered nature itself.”

3. 第二段提到工人面临的困难:“They had to build tracks through frozen ground, deep forests, and high mountains.”,文中提到了冻土、深林和高山,未提到野生动物。
4. 本文围绕人类克服自然重重困难完成这项伟大工程展开,并且最后一段指出:“the Trans-Siberian Railway is not only a symbol of human determination but also an important link between Europe and Asia.”,因此作者引用“We didn’t just build a railway; we conquered nature itself”这句话是为了强调人类在极端困难下完成这一工程的伟大成就。

Passage 5
The chances of being hit by a falling helicopter (直升机) are low, but never zero! Two days before Logan Schneider’s 19th birthday, an accident happened to him. While Logan was helping his brother on the farm in Wenatchee, Washington, a helicopter fell from the sky and landed directly on him.
Logan was wearing noise-canceling headphones (降噪耳机) just before the crash. He said he heard a couple of thumps (重击声) and looked up just in time to see the helicopter falling straight to him. He hardly had time to think before a fire broke out. As he tried to make his way out, he heard the pilot Cori Johnson shouting for help.
“I heard him shouting,” Logan said. “I looked around and saw him hanging upside down. Fire was everywhere. When I was in the moment, I wasn’t thinking. I was just doing.” Logan reached Cori through the fire and brought him away from the fire. Once Cori was on his feet, Logan helped him get away just seconds before flames burst (爆炸) 30 feet into the air.
Firefighters arrived and put out the fire. Both Cori and Logan were taken to the hospital. Logan suffered second-degree burns on his arms and got hurt in his back, while Cori had a broken arm and several burns.
“I don’t know how we both got out. I’m lucky to be alive,” Logan said. “The craziest thing about the whole situation is the pilot and I share the same birthday!”
Sounds like it was meant to be, right? Well, this story gets even more coincidental (巧合的). Logan has always planned to enter college to learn about planes so that he can become a pilot. The crash has not stopped him, and he still plans to fly in the sky.
1. Where did the accident happen?
A.In the forest. B.Near the river. C.On the farm. D.On the beach.

D.The pilot was hurt more seriously than Logan.
4. Which of the following is TRUE about the story?
① Logan and the pilot got away just before flames burst.
② Logan plans to be a pilot in the future.
③ The pilot will be Logan’s teacher at college.
④ Logan and the pilot share the same birthday.
A.①②③ B.②③④ C.①③④ D.①②④
【答案】1. C 2. C 3. B 4. D

2. 通读第二段,本段主要介绍了事故发生初期,Logan的状态、看到的情况以及事故的初步发展,讲述的是事故过程中发生的事情。
3. 第三段提到:“Logan reached Cori through the fire and brought him away from the fire.”,这表明Logan非常勇敢,穿越火场救下了飞行员。
4. 第三段提到:“Logan helped him get away just seconds before flames burst 30 feet into the air.”,对应①;第五段提到:“the pilot and I share the same birthday”,对应④;第六段提到:“he still plans to fly in the sky”,对应②。因此①②④正确,文中未提及③。
