In the early 1400s, a Chinese translator named Ma Huan sailed to a place that seemed almost like a dream. He was traveling with Zheng He, whose giant ships had reached Hormuz (霍尔木兹). Ma Huan had a habit: he wrote down everything. When he returned home, he turned his notes into a book. For centuries, people read his words and wondered: Could any of this be true?
A Land of Wonders
Hormuz, Ma Huan wrote, was like nothing he had ever seen. Near the city stood a mountain with five different colors — red, yellow, white, and more. The soil itself seemed to shine. Even stranger, the local people made plates and bowls out of a special stone. When they served food on these plates, the food became salty. No need for salt shakers!
Ma Huan also saw women cover their faces with silk when they went out and businessmen from many countries trading in busy markets. What’s more, he noticed the kindness of the people. If someone fell on hard times, others would step in to help.
A Mystery for Centuries
For hundreds of years, historians didn’t know what to make of Ma Huan’s stories. A mountain with five colors? Plates that salted food? It sounded more like fairy tales than real history.
Then, in recent years, scientists took a closer look at Hormuz Island. What they found was surprising. The island really does have colorful mountains. The rocks are full of different minerals (矿物质), creating red, yellow, and white lines.
And the “salt plates”? They were real too. The local stone is actually rock salt. People in the region had cut it into bowls and plates for centuries. Ma Huan had been telling the truth all along.
Why He Matters Today
Today, Ma Huan’s book helps us see the past in a new way. He didn’t just write about kings and battles. He wrote about how ordinary people lived — what they ate, what they wore, how they treated each other.
His story reminds us that sometimes the most important person on a voyage isn’t the captain. It’s the quiet one with a notebook, paying attention to the small things that make a place special.
47.Which of the following best describes the people of Hormuz according to Ma Huan?
A.Rich but selfish. B.Strange and scary.
C.Kind and helpful. D.Poor but honest.
48.Why did historians doubt Ma Huan’s stories for so long?
A.His book was lost for many years.
B.His descriptions sounded unbelievable.
C.He couldn’t speak the local language.
D.Other travelers disagreed with him.
49.In the last paragraph, the writer mentions “the quiet one with a notebook” to show that ________.
A.Captains are not as important as translators.
B.Taking notes is the most difficult job.
C.Ordinary people’s records can be valuable.
D.Writers speak louder than soldiers.
50.Which “make of” has the same meaning as the underlined one in Paragraph 5?
A.I don’t know what to make of his strange behavior.
B.These old chairs are made of bamboo and they are cool to sit on in summer.
C.The bad news was made up of lies and wrong information.
D.We should make the best of our time every day.
51.Which best describes the way the writer develops the passage?
A.By telling events in time order.
B.By presenting a mystery and then proving the truth.
C.By comparing different places.
D.By explaining reasons for a result.

From the age of eleven, Robert Swan knew he wanted to be an adventurer. Influenced by famous adventurers Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott, Swan wanted to become the first person to walk to both the North and South Poles (北极和南极). People told him he was crazy, but after years of raising money, he began his adventure.
In January 1986, Swan and his team arrived at the South Pole after a 1,400-kilometre journey. Just three years later, Swan created a new team to head to the North Pole. After walking 1,000 kilometres in 60 days, the team finally succeeded. Swan, in his own words, became “the first person stupid enough to walk to both Poles”.
During those two adventures, however, Swan noticed some terrible things. At the South Pole, his eyes changed colour because of the sun’s harmful rays (光线) going through the hole in the ozone layer (臭氧层) . These rays are harmful to both humans and the environment. At the North Pole, the ice started to melt (融化) under his feet. This was four months earlier than the usual “melt season”. These experiences made Swan realise something-the Poles were in real danger.

Volunteering has become one of the most popular activities among teenagers in recent years. More and more middle school students choose to spend their free time doing volunteer work instead of playing computer games or watching videos at home. Volunteering is not only a great way to help people in need, but also an important chance for teenagers to improve themselves and grow into responsible persons.
On weekends and holidays, student volunteers take part in different kinds of volunteer activities. Some groups go to city parks and streets to pick up rubbish, clean public benches and plant small trees to protect the environment. Some volunteers visit the old people’s home nearby.

A.Captains are not as important as translators.
B.Taking notes is the most difficult job.
C.Ordinary people’s records can be valuable.

50.Which “make of” has the same meaning as the underlined one in Paragraph 5?

Taihe Forum Focuses on Museum Development
As the Palace Museum—China’s imperial palace (皇宫) from 1420 to 1911 and also known as the Forbidden City—celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding, experts from home and abroad gathered at a forum to talk about the development of museums.
Organized by the Palace Museum and the Forbidden City Cultural Heritage Conservation Foundation (故宫文化遗产保护基金会), the 7th Taihe Forum was held in Beijing on Saturday. More than 300 experts from 26 countries and international organizations took part in it. They came from museums, scientific research institutions, universities, and enterprises.

Lazare Eloundou Assomo, director of UNESCO World Heritage, said the Forbidden City (now the Palace Museum) has stood for over six centuries. It is a witness (见证者) to Beijing’s vitality (活力). He added that protecting cultural heritage and sustainable (可持续的) development can go together. This not only makes citizens’ lives richer but also inspires future generations.
Other experts discussed topics such as how technology helps protect cultural heritage, the influence of climate change on heritage sites, and their sustainable development.
The Taihe Forum is named after Taihe Dian (the Hall of Supreme Harmony), the most important imperial building in the Forbidden City. Founded in 2016, the forum aims to stress the values of ancient civilizations and how they can inspire modern development.

That feeling never left Swan. He now works hard so that he will get more people to pay attention to environmental protection. In doing this, Swan hopes that he can help not only with the Poles, but also with humans’ health.

Dear Peter,
How is everything going? I have a heartwarming story to share with you about one of my classmates, Wang Hong.
Last Saturday morning, Wang Hong was running along the river when she saw a stray cat. It looked so poor and weak that she decided to buy some cat food for it. Then she entered a pet hospital nearby. The doctor there was deeply touched after knowing the situation and gave her some cat food for free. Wang Hong bowed to express her sincere thanks and then left.
In my opinion, Wang Hong’s kindness is really inspiring. Small acts of love can make a big difference to those in need.
Do you have a story to share? Looking forward to hearing from you soon.
