Why Do Older People Get Shorter?
You’re now growing taller each year. But did you know most people start to get s 1 little by little after 30? When you are 80, you would be 5 ~ 6cm shorter.
Here comes an interesting question. W 2 gets shorter so much in your body? Go on reading and you can f 3 out the fact. It is your back (脊柱) that keeps you upright (直立的). There are 33 little bones (骨头). Between most of these bones are soft discs (椎间盘).
The middle of these soft discs is like jelly (果冻), and are mainly made of water. As you get older, these discs lose water slowly. They b 4 a little thinner. There are usually 23 discs, and they are as high as 1/4 of your back. As a result, when e 5 of them gets shorter a little bit, you get shorter.
Older people’s muscles (肌肉) a 6 get smaller and weaker, their bones get thinner and the spaces between the bones get smaller. Together, this can change your h 7 .
There’s another f 8 that you may not realise. Even when you are y 9 , you get shorter over the day. You are actually tallest when you w 10 up in the morning. You lose up to 2.5cm in less than 3 hours after getting out of bed.
So, if you really want to be the tallest you can be, try to measure (测量) how tall you are just after you get out of bed in the morning.

Why Do Older People Get Shorter?
You’re now growing taller each year. But did you know most people start to get s 1 little by little after 30? When you are 80, you would be 5 ~ 6cm shorter.

There’s another f 8 that you may not realise. Even when you are y 9 , you get shorter over the day. You are actually tallest when you w 10 up in the morning. You lose up to 2.5cm in less than 3 hours after getting out of bed.

Is there a way to quickly recall (回忆) information just before taking an exam? Walking backward (倒着走) might help you. Scientists from the University of Roehampton in the UK said this a 1 can help people improve their short-term memory.
Researchers asked 114 v 2 to watch a video. After watching the video, they were d 3 into three groups. One group was told to walk 10 meters forward. The s 4 group walked ten meters backward. The third group stood in one place. All three groups were then asked twenty q 5 about what they saw in the video.
The scientists found that the backward-walking group got two more answers correct on average (平均来看) than the other two groups.
This suggests that the link (联系) b 6 the concepts (概念) of time and space is important for how our minds form memories. “Time is really expressed via (通过) space,” Aleksandar Aksentijevic, who led the study, told the Daily Mail. When you walk backward, you see things from a different angle (角度). This difference helps people recall things that happened in the p 7 .
And walking backward is also good for the rest of our body. Compared to walking forward, walking backward is more challenging (具有挑战性的). This can help us keep f 8 , according to New Scientist. Walking backward u 9 more energy in a short time and burns more calories (卡路里).
In addition, walking backward is less stressful (有压力的) for our knees. It could be h 10 for people who often have pain in their knees, according to researchers from the University of Oregon in the US. Walking backward also keeps our spines (脊柱) strong, which can help to ease pain in the lower back. This might be why many old people like walking backward.

Sometimes a little self-criticism (自我批评) is not a bad thing. We all can learn much from our mistakes. However, too much of it may i 1 your brain and your life.
Negative (消极的) self-talk is that little voice in your head that judges (评价) you. It says you are not good e 2 and reminds you of all your mistakes.
Dr. Hughes, an educator and a researcher on how the mind controls behavior, noticed that there are some students who are doing all the right things. They are good students. They show up for class, do their homework and work h 3 . But when it comes to taking a test, they do not do well. They may s 4 from something commonly called “test anxiety (焦虑)”.
Lindsay was one of Hughes’ b 5 students at a community college. She came to class early, listened carefully and did all of her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hughes asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very n 6 . She wondered why she had trouble remembering what she had studied. She said she did not trust that she knew the right answers. This is an example of negative self-talk.
Dr. Hughes took Lindsay’s negative self-talks and t 7 them into positive (积极的) questions. Before a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why am I so relaxed when I take an exam? Why am I so focused during my exam? Why do I trust my answers?
Lindsay took his a 8 . Two weeks later, she took an exam in another class and scored 15 points h 9 than she had on an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she earned an “A” on the final exam in Hughes’ class.
Dr. Hughes saw many students succeed with his method. More importantly, they got their self-confidence back. In a television interview, he said, “We can train ourselves for s 10 in life, or we can train ourselves for failure.”

It was the proudest moment of my life. We were waiting for instructions from ground control. The minutes seemed like h 1 . Finally, we took off. We were travelling so fast—it only took about 10 minutes to get into orbit (轨道). At first, it was a shock to my body. I wasn’t feeling great. However, I soon changed and felt better. At last, we r 2 the space station—my new home for a while! Let me tell you what life in space is like.
Eating in space
I used to w 3 about the food in space. But in fact we can choose from many types of food, such as fruit, nuts, chicken, beef and seafood. We have different types of tea, juice and soup as well. It turns out (证明) that eating can be a p 4 in space too!
Working in space
We are very busy every day. Being an astronaut is hard because you do not experience gravity (重力) when you are in orbit. Everything floats (漂浮), i 5 you, so simple tasks seem harder and take longer to do. When we go outside, we have to move very carefully. We can’t afford to make any mistakes, so it can be stressful sometimes. However, it is an a 6 experience to go outside the space station in a spacesuit. The view of the Earth is great!
Sleeping in space
Just like on Earth, I go to bed at a c 7 time. However, I sleep in a sleeping bag in a small room, and I have to stick my sleeping bag to the wall. This stops me from floating around the room and h 8 something by mistake!
Exercising in space
Exercise is an important part of our daily life in space. When we live in space, we start losing muscle (肌肉). Exercise can slow down the muscle loss. If we do not exercise, we will be very w 9 when we return to the Earth. L 10 , we have a small gym on the space station to help us stay fit. However, the exercise equipment is very different from what we use on Earth.

But there are s 7 some worries. Qin Peixuan, 24, thinks that the air in the closed carriage (车厢) may not fresh. Peng Ying, a cat owner, also said that keeping different animals together might not be a good i 8 . For example, a dog’s barking (叫声) may make cats feel afraid.
A 9 the service needs to be improved, it reflects (反映) a change towards more user-friendly railways. In the future, we may see more services like this to help meet the increasing need in the market. Railways will become a bigger part of d 10 life, not just a way to travel, noted Xinhua.

Hey there, kids! Today, we will learn some important rules for communication. Good communication is the secret of m 1 friends and keeping them. So, let’s get started!
First, listen with your ears and your heart. When someone is talking to you, pay full a 2 to them. Look at them, nod your head, and listen with your ears and your heart. It shows that you c 3 about what they are saying.
Second, think before you speak. Just like you look before you c 4 the street, you need to think twice about something before you say it. Ask yourself, “Is it kind? Is it helpful?” If the answer is yes, feel free to share it! But if it’s not, keep it to yourself.
Third, use your words, not your fists (拳头). If you have a p 5 with someone, don’t solve it with your fists. Instead, use your words to e 6 how you feel. Your words can make a world of difference, while getting physical only makes things worse.
Fourth, treat (对待) others the way you want to be treated. This rule e 7 you to put yourself in someone else’s shoes and consider how you would like to be treated if you were in their position (位置). If you treat others with love, kindness, and respect (尊敬), the chances are that they will treat you the s 8 way.
F 9 , be a friend, not a bully (恃强凌弱者). Bullies are no fun, and they don’t have many friends. Instead, be a friend to others. Stand up for those who need help and always be there to lend an ear. Together, we can make the world a better place.
Remember to put these s 10 into practice, and you’ll be a popular person soon!
