One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and this is exactly the case in Türkiye where garbage collectors started collecting abandoned books and ended up opening a library.
It started when garbage man Durson Ipek found a bag of abandoned books when he was working and then it snowballed from there.Ipek and other garbage men started gathering the books they found on the streets that were ready for landfills(垃圾填埋场) and as their collection started to grow,so did word-of-mouth.Soon,local residents started donating books directly. At first the library was only accessible to the garbage employees and their families but as the collection grew,so did public interest and the library was opened to the public in 2017.
“On the one hand, there were those who were leaving these books on the streets. On the other hand, others were looking for these books,”Ankaya mayor Alper Tasdelen told CNN.“We started to discuss the idea of creating a library from these books and with everyone’s support, the project became a reality.”
All the books that are found are carefully sorted and checked for condition. If they’re up to standard, they’ll go on to the shelves.Today, the library has over 6,000 books that range from fiction to nonfiction and there’s a very popular children’s section that even has a collection of comic books.Additionally, there is a section specially set aside for book types of scientific research and books there are available in both English and French. The collection has grown so large that the library lends books to schools and educational programs.
“Village school teachers from all over Türkiye are requesting books,” Tasdelen told CNN.The government has to hire a full-time employee to manage the library.
This library is incredibly popular. It is frequently filled with the children of the city’s workers and students from nearby schools. There is a waiting room set up for readers and chess boards for the people who visit the library. You can even enjoy a cup of tea in the waiting room.
24.How did the library attract public interest and support?
A.By offering free tea for visitors.
B.By organizing chess matches.
C.Through word-of-mouth and book donations.
D.By cooperating with nearby schools.
25.What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about the library?
A.Its great popularity. B.Its potential importance.
C.Its huge collection of books. D.Its wide variety of readers.
26.Why did the government hire a full-time employee?
A.To raise people’s awareness of recycling.
B.To classify and check the donated books.
C.To expand the social influence of the library.
D.To meet the huge demand from rural teachers.
27.What can be inferred about the library from the last paragraph?
A.It’s an excellent place to enjoy tea.
B.It’s crowded with readers every day.
C.It needs to improve its management.
D.It provides a very considerate service.

People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming—and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade.According to a study by the European Central Bank,by 2035,higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
To find out how this is affecting food prices,Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021.By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later.
In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude(纬度) of New York City and Beijing,warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.
“The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,”Kotz says.“Crops may be drying out on the vine(藤) when they should be being harvested.”Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar conclusions.Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation(食品通胀)due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060.“We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,”says Kotz.“Warming-fueled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.”
28.What does the study focus on?
A.The impact of climate change on food prices.
B.The factors in the rising living costs.
C.The effects of natural disasters on food production.
D.The comparison of food prices in different regions.
29.How did researchers reach their conclusions?
A.By conducting a survey among farmers.
B.By referring to previous studies.
C.By tracking some cities for years.
D.By analyzing a mass of data.
30.What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz?
A.Frequent rainfall.
B.Extreme high temperature.
C.The increasing demand for crops.
D.The influence of trade policies.
31.What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A.To call on people to pay attention to food security.
B.To urge farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue.
C.To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
D.To explain the situation of global food inflation.

A plan to thicken sea ice using water from the ocean below could offer mankind a final chance to save the disappearing sea ice.Field trials(实地试验) done this year in the Arctic have turned out to be successful, says UK start-up Real Ice.
Arctic sea ice cover is falling rapidly because of climate change. Many scientists expect the area to be ice-free in the summer in the 2030s,even if sharp cuts to emissions(排放)are made. The only way to save the area’s summer sea ice is to find a way to thicken the ice, some researchers say.
Real Ice’s solution includes making a hole through the ice, then drawing water up and onto the snow that sits atop the ice.The water would go in the snow and freeze(冻结),turning the snow into ice. This means the cold from the Arctic air would spread through it and result in the growth of more ice on the underside of the ice.
Working with the Centre for Climate Repair at the University of Cambridge,Real Ice has been doing field trials this year in Cambridge Bay on Victoria Island in Canada. The company says the trials have validated the idea, thickening the ice shelf by 50 centimeters compared with a control site between January and May.
The experiment also exhibited that the salty water left after the seawater freezes runs through the ice back into the ocean, rather than remaining on top of the ice, which would weaken the result of it.
But differences in attitude(态度)were obvious among scientists. Many are worried about the risk of unexpected results.
“I don’t think any of these ideas are practical,” says Julienne Stroeve at University College London. She raises worries about the plan’s energy(能源) requirements,as well as the influence that a loss of snow cover would have on animals such as polar bears and seals, which use snow to dig holes for their young. The only solution for saving Arctic ice is to cut emissions, she says.
32.What do some researchers think about the loss of sea ice in the Arctic?
A.It has been worsened more rapidly recently.
B.The Arctic area will soon be free of sea ice.
C.Fruitful steps are being taken to hold it back.
D.Mankind has no choice but to thicken the ice.
33.What does the underlined word “validate” mean in paragraph 4?
A.Supported. B.Accepted.
C.Misunderstood. D.Refused.
34.What is Julienne Stroeve’s attitude to thickening sea ice?
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive.
C.Unconcerned. D.Uncertain.
35.Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A.The Environment in the Arctic is Worrisome
B.The Plan to Refreeze Sea Ice Shows Promise
C.The Method of Cutting Emissions is Preferable
D.The Sea Ice Cover in the Arctic Disappears Rapidly

Forgiveness is the most important tool humans have been blessed with.Because, with it,we can let go of unnecessary burdens and truly own our lives. And by doing that, you maybe make a friend. That was a lesson an eleven-year-old boy taught me when I was in my eighth grade.
When I was in the fifth grade, there was a boy in my class named Kyle.He was big and strong.Maybe he was kind inside.Maybe he was just good at pretending in face of adults.I said so because I happened to see him helping an old man who was so grateful that he couldn’t stop saying thanks to him.
However,to the children of his age,he was the meanest person I had ever met.For the first couple days of school,Kyle and I sat across from each other.Once,he secretly reached his legs across the table and slammed(猛踩) his shoe down on mine, causing a rapid rush of pain.I stared at him angrily, but he just made faces to me.I chose to ignore him.I didn’t want to get involved into trouble because I was anxious to leave to see my brother. He suffered from a strange disease.Despite the fact that he was slow and had special needs,I loved him and couldn’t stand others laughing at him.
Kyle’s bullying(欺凌)went on.Eventually,I told a teacher, and my seat was moved. But Kyle’s abuse didn’t stop.He continued to call me names, such as “stupid”.His words were quite embarrassing to an eleven-year-old girl.He continued to physically hurt me.In “morning meeting” he once stepped on my foot so hard that I burst into tears. This continued for most of the school year.
Kyle also bullied my friend Megan. At one point she ran out of the classroom because he copied her nonstop. Both of us were absolutely painful. And despite meetings with teachers and guidance counselors, nothing changed. We had a large class of noisy boys, and the teacher had a hard time keeping order.

W:OK,so tomorrow we’ll be doing a tour of the city to see some of the most important sights in San Francisco. We need to be at the Ferry Building in time to catch the boat at 8 a.m.But I think we should aim to be there by 7:45,because the earlier you get on,the better seats you can get. It’s a 15-minute walk from the hotel. You won’t need to bring any money for food because a packed lunch is provided. It’s included in the boat fare, which is $30.It should be sunny tomorrow, but it can get windy on the boat,so a jacket is necessary. It takes about 25 minutes to get to Sausalito. We’ll spend about an hour in Sausalito where we’ll do some shopping. From Sausalito we’ll get a bus to the Golden Gate Park. Here, you’ll have a choice of activities.Firstly, the museum. The best thing here is the painting collection.Anyway, you’ll have about two hours to visit before we break for lunch. After lunch, you can go to the Japanese Tea Garden. This is the oldest Japanese garden in the United States. There, you’ll have the opportunity to experience the natural beauty and harmony of a Japanese-style garden.

写作
第一节
I can still remember one day I decided to help my parents wash dishes after dinner. At first,I got the dirty dishes to the kitchen. Then I began to wash them.I turned on the tap and water covered all the dishes in the sink. Then I added some detergent to the water.Maybe because I put too much,it was full of bubbles in the sink.It was just like a bubble bath for dishes and bowls.I caught a bowl to wash.It was slippery.“Pang!” The bowl slipped from my fingers. It dropped into the sink and broke another bowl and a dish.It was terrible! There was only one dish left.
At that moment,my mother suddenly appeared by my side with her mouth widely open.I thought she was going to punish me,but she just burst into laughter and encouraged me to do a better job next time.
第二节
The climax of Kyle’s bad behavior occurred in mid-May.One day,Kyle cornered me into a wall and laughed at my brother, calling him a “stupid”.I couldn’t control myself any longer. With my teacher standing behind me,I told Kyle exactly how much he had hurt me—both physically and emotionally.I had tears streaming down my face and probably looked ridiculous, but I didn’t care.I had been waiting for the opportunity to tell Kyle how much I hated him for months.Seeing this,Kyle was shocked and his face turned red.
He apologized to me,promising he would never laugh at my brother.Later,Kyle kept his promise and never laughed at my brother. His teasing didn’t completely end but he changed a lot.Summer came and went,as did sixth grade, and seventh grade. When I was in eighth grade,I let go of the pain that Kyle brought to me.I felt no hate for him.My forgiveness made us become friends.
