Before planes, people traveled by boat. And getting goods from one place to another took a long time, especially when ships had to sail around continents. In the early 1600s, European trading companies were looking for faster routes to sail to Asia.
In 1607 and 1608, British explorer Henry Hudson led two failed voyages to find a northeast passage across the Arctic Ocean to Asia. He was searching for a route above the Arctic Circle, and his biggest problem was sailing around icebergs (冰山), which blocked his path. After failing twice, Hudson couldn’t get a British company to fund his next voyage. He had to persuade the Dutch East India Company to back his third trip.
Hudson left Amsterdam on April 4, 1609 aboard a ship named the Half Moon. The crew headed southwest across the Atlantic Ocean to America. After several months, he arrived in the New York Harbor and sailed up a body of water that is now named the Hudson River. He thought the river might lead to the Pacific Ocean. But he was wrong, and he was forced to turn back to Europe.
Hudson made one final attempt in 1610, on a new ship named Discovery. He sailed Discovery across the northern Atlantic and discovered a large body of water that became known as Hudson Bay. Unfortunately, the Hudson Bay did not lead to Asia. Furthermore, Hudson’s luck had run out. Winter weather hit the region and the crew suffered greatly from lack of food and supplies. Discovery had become trapped in thick ice. Hudson’s crew became angry. They wanted to return to Europe, but Hudson wanted to continue searching for a passage to Asia. When spring came, the crew revolted (反叛) and took control of the ship. They put Hudson, his son, and seven others on a small boat somewhere in the Hudson Bay. The crew sailed Discovery back to Europe and those who led the mutiny (叛乱) were severely punished. Henry Hudson was never seen again.
4 What was the purpose of Hudson’s voyages?
A. To look for new land.
B. To seek fame and fortune.
C. To do scientific research.
D. To find a shorter route to Asia.

Being more careful in which AI models we use for tasks could potentially save 31.9 terawatt-hours (太瓦时) of energy this year alone.
Tiago da Silva Barros at the University of Cote d’Azur and his colleagues looked at 14 different tasks people use generative AI tools for, ranging from text generation to speech recognition. They studied public rankings showing how different models perform. They also measured how much energy the models use when they are running. “Based on the size of the model, we estimated its energy use, and then we used that data for further calculations,” da Silva Barros said.
The research found that for all 14 tasks, switching from the best-performing model to the most energy-efficient model cut energy use by 65.8%, while the quality of the output dropped only 3.9%. The team was surprised by how much energy could be saved.
However, Chris Preist at the University of Bristol said that getting users to choose the most efficient models “is unlikely to reduce overall energy growth, at least for now.” He explained, “Reducing energy per prompt (提示) will only allow more users to be served faster, and with more complex reasoning.”
So da Silva Barros said both users and AI companies need to change. “We should think about using smaller models, even if we lose some performance,” he said. “And when companies develop models, it’s important that they share information about the model, so users can understand whether it uses a lot of energy or not.”
Sasha Luccioni at Hugging Face pointed out that research like this still depends on outside estimates. “To do more detailed analyses, we need more data from AI companies,” she said. “That would help researchers and policymakers make better plans and decisions.”
8. What does the research mainly focus on?
A. Behavior patterns of AI users. B. Energy efficiency of AI models.
C. Estimation of AI performance. D. Methods of AI energy measurement.
9. What is Chris Preist’s major concern?
A. The research results are unreliable.
B. Users won’t adopt green AI models.
C. Energy savings may not actually happen.
D. Quicker AI responses will reduce service quality.
10. What needs to be done according to Tiago da Silva Barros and Sasha Luccioni?
A. Slow down AI progress for now.
B. Increase the use of smaller AI models.
C. Develop more powerful AI models.
D. Encourage openness from AI companies.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI Advances at a Great Cost
B. Smarter AI Choices Save Energy
C. AI Consumes Too Much Energy
D. AI Future Remains Up in the Air
D
New research suggests that pandas may be at risk of extinction because they are too comfortable. Experts say too much happiness can stop the pandas from searching for new mates.
Environmentalists have long believed that human activities like road or house construction threaten pandas by fragmenting (分裂) their natural habitats. But the new research suggests that a “modest degree of discomfort and fragmentation” may actually help preserve panda populations.
The research, published in Conservation Biology, was conducted by scientists from Michigan State University. It concluded that pandas fail to wander off in search of new mates if they find their habitat too comfortable, resulting in a lack of vital genetic diversity. The ideal level of perfectly livable habitat was found to be only 80% of an area, with the remainder either too harsh or too affected by human activity.
The experts concluded that pandas should ideally “be happy enough to thrive (蓬勃发展) but not so content that they don’t want to move around and find new mates”. This “sweet spot”, described by The Guardian, is in line with the Goldilocks principle: there can be just the right amount of something. Claudio Sillero, a professor of conservation biology at Oxford University, told the newspaper that the significance of this new discovery may extend beyond panda conservation.
“Most large animals that eat meat live in increasingly fragmented landscapes”, said Sillero, who was not involved in the research. “It may well be that the messy nature of their relationship with human efforts makes more animals scatter or travel further, and might result in greater genetic connectivity and enhanced population persistence.”
The latest count of pandas found that there were more than 1,800 left in the wild, putting them among vulnerable, but not endangered, species.
12. What do we learn from the new research about pandas?
A. They are losing habitat due to the building of roads and houses.
B. They have stopped seeking new mates for reproduction.
C. They may not adapt to the fragmentation of their habitat.
D. They may stop existing as a result of enjoying too good a life.
13. What can we conclude from Michigan State University’s new research?
A. The previous belief regarding panda conservation may be incorrect.
B. Housing development near pandas’ homes may threaten their survival.
C. Pandas’ natural habitats are becoming less suitable for reproduction.
D. The increased panda population is due to the fragmentation of their habitat.
14. What is the experts’ conclusion regarding pandas?
A. It is urgent to provide an ideal habitat for them to thrive.
B. It is very important to preserve their genetic diversity.
C. Their chances of finding new mates have a lot to do with their habitat.
D. Their environment for survival has been continuously worsening.
15. What can the new findings do according to Professor Sillero?
A. Benefit pandas and help enlarge their population.
B. Help remove pandas from the list of endangered species.
C. Cast light on the conservation of most large meat-eating animals.
D. Show the complexity of interactions between humans and animals.

You don’t need to be an astronomer with a giant telescope to enjoy a simple but spellbinding activity: stargazing. ___16___ It’s so interesting to discover what’s going on. With a bit of practice, and know-how from books and websites, stargazers can spot particular stars and also groups of stars.
There is plenty to take in using just your eyes but some people use a telescope for a more detailed look. For the best results, choose a clear night when the moon is not very bright. ___17___
It can be harder to see the stars in towns and cities. It is because of light pollution. The night sky is brightened by light from street lamps, shops and car headlights. The best places for stargazing are open, hilly areas or the coast. ___18___ It is our home galaxy stretching across the night sky and is best seen in summer and fall evening skies. If the full moon is up, it will be hard to see. Try going for a night hike instead! Let your eyes adjust to the moonlight and keep your flashlight turned off.
___19___ That is camping in a national park under a star-filled sky. Many national parks offer various night sky programs, from telescope astronomy events to full moon walks with rangers. Besides, national parks are also great places to know about the animals that are awake at night and asleep during the day. Sit quietly and listen for these creatures.
When you head out at night, always go with an adult. Dress warmly and take a blanket or a chair to sit on, plus a hot drink to warm you up. You might want to take a camera with you as well, so you can take a photo if you see something amazing in the sky. A whole new world comes alive at night and is waiting to be explored. ___20___
A. Get prepared for the wonder above.
B. Just go outside at night and look up.
C. You are supposed to avoid the full moon.
D. It also matters which direction you observe.
E. In these places, you can look for the Milky Way.

May had just finished gluing two eyes onto her new craft (手工艺品) when Mom walked into her room. “Wow, an impressive Chinese dragon! Will that be keeping you company tomorrow?” Mom asked with a smile. May’s stomach tightened. Tomorrow was her first day at a new school. Her family had just moved from China to this new country over the summer.
Seeing the worry on May’s face, Mom added, “New-school nerves, right? I bet you’ll make all kinds of friends just by being you.” She kissed the top of May’s head before leaving the room. As May packed her backpack, she thought about Mom’s words. She hoped Mom was right.
The next morning, she decided to bring Longlong, her handmade Chinese dragon, to school. Throughout the morning, it helped to know Longlong was nearby. May found the courage to get through hellos and small talks without turning bright red.
Everything was going fine—until she checked her bag after the break. Longlong was missing! Her confidence disappeared. And now it was lunchtime. How could she face a room full of kids she didn’t know? As her class lined up outside the lunchroom, May busied herself by reading the posters on the wall. One caught her eye:
Want to Join an After School Club?
Sign up by Friday!
Chess, Math, Cooking, Drama, Kickball…
OR
See Mrs. Miller in Room 301, Teaching Building B with New Ideas!
Mom had told May clubs could be a way to make friends with kids who shared her interests. But none of these clubs seemed quite right.
Just then, a voice called, “Hey, you! In the red shirt!” May turned. A girl walked up and handed her Longlong, saying it had fallen from her backpack. She introduced herself as Olivia, a student from Mrs. Miller’s class. May thanked her and felt braver as she held Longlong again. When Olivia learned that May had made it herself, she said she also liked crafts and asked if May could teach her.

4. What was the purpose of Hudson’s voyages?
A. To look for new land.
B. To seek fame and fortune.
C. To do scientific research.
D. To find a shorter route to Asia.
5. What does the underlined word “back” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Arrange. B. Follow. C. Support. D. Value.
6. Where did Hudson arrive during his third voyage?
A. Asia. B. The Hudson River.
C. Hudson Bay. D. The Pacific Ocean.
7. What do we know about Henry Hudson from the text?
A. He enjoyed his last days.
B. His three voyages were funded by the British.
C He named a river after himself.
D. His sailing life finished with a sad ending.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. D

【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. B

根据第二段中的“They studied public rankings showing how different models perform. They also measured how much energy the models use when they are running.”(他们研究了显示不同模型表现情况的公开排名,还测量了模型运行时消耗多少能源。)”以及第三段中的“The research found that for all 14 tasks, switching from the best-performing model to the most energy-efficient model cut energy use by 65.8%, while the quality of the output dropped only 3.9%.(研究发现,在所有14项任务中,从性能最好的模型切换到最节能的模式,能耗降低了65.8%,而产出的质量仅下降了3.9%。)”可知,该研究比较了不同AI模型在完成相同任务时的能量消耗,并指出更换为高效模型可减少65.8%的能耗,因此,该研究主要关注AI模型的能效。故选B。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“However, Chris Preist at the University of Bristol said that getting users to choose the most efficient models “is unlikely to reduce overall energy growth, at least for now.” He explained, “Reducing energy per prompt ( 提示) will only allow more users to be served faster, and with more complex reasoning.(然而,布里斯托尔大学(University of Bristol)的克里斯・普里斯特(Chris Preist)表示,让用户选择最高效的模型‘至少在目前不太可能减少整体能源消耗的增长’。他解释道:‘降低每个提示的能耗,只会让更多用户获得更快的服务,并进行更复杂的逻辑推理。’)”可知,Chris Preist担心,如果只减少每次提示的能耗,可能会让AI公司以更低成本服务更多用户、提供更复杂的推理,从而导致总能耗不降反升,即Chris Preist担心实际的能源节省可能不会发生。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“So da Silva Barros said both users and AI companies need to change. “We should think about using smaller models, even if we lose some performance,” he said. “And when companies develop models, it’s important that they share information about the model, so users can understand whether it uses a lot of energy or not.”(因此,达・席尔瓦・巴罗斯(da Silva Barros)表示,用户和人工智能公司都需要做出改变。‘我们应该考虑使用更小的模型,即便这会损失一些性能,’ 他说,‘而且企业在开发模型时,公开模型相关信息十分重要,这样用户就能了解它是否高耗能。’)”以及第六段“Sasha Luccioni at Hugging Face pointed out that research like this still depends on outside estimates. “To do more detailed analyses, we need more data from AI companies,” she said. “That would help researchers and policymakers make better plans and decisions.”(Hugging Face公司的萨莎・卢乔尼(Sasha Luccioni)指出,这类研究目前仍依赖外部估算。‘要开展更细致的分析,我们需要人工智能公司提供更多数据,’她说,‘这将帮助研究人员和政策制定者制定更完善的方案与决策。’)”可知,Tiago da Silva Barros强调公司应提供模型能耗信息,Sasha Luccioni则指出需要更多来自AI公司的数据支持研究。因此,根据Tiago da Silva Barros和Sasha Luccioni的说法,应鼓励AI公司提高信息透明度,公开更多数据。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。文章开篇“Being more careful in which AI models we use for tasks could potentially save 31.9 terawatt-hours (太瓦时) of energy this year alone.(仅在今年,更加谨慎地选择我们用于各项任务的AI模型,就有可能节省31.9太瓦时的能源。)”

The experts concluded that pandas should ideally “be happy enough to thrive (蓬勃发展), but not so content that they don’t want to move around and find new mates”.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. C

Learning that you are looking for a parent-child travel destination, I’m writing to recommend Sanya as my top choice. The reasons are as follows:
To start with, nothing beats Sanya for its golden beaches and crystal-clear water, where families can relax and play together. Moreover, the city offers a variety of parent-child interactive activities, such as diving and boat tours. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The next morning she decided to bring Longlong, her handmade Chinese dragon, to school.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“Sure! Want to meet here after school?” May asked. Olivia’s face lit up with excitement. “That would be awesome!” she replied. The two girls started chatting animatedly about all the craft ideas they had, like making friendship bracelets and paper lanterns. As they talked, May felt a sense of ease she hadn't felt all day. When the line started moving into the lunchroom, they sat together, still engrossed in their conversation about crafts.
May got a new idea and she decided to have a talk with Mrs. Miller. After lunch, she made her way to Room 301 in Teaching Building B. She walked in nervously but when she saw Mrs. Miller’s warm smile, her courage grew. May explained her love for crafts and how she hoped to start a craft club. Mrs. Miller was delighted and said it was a wonderful idea. With Mrs. Miller’s support, May couldn't wait to tell Olivia and start their very own craft club, looking forward to making more friends who shared their passion.
