Jane Austen, a famous English writer, was born at Steventon, Hampshire, on December 16, 1775, and died on July 18, 1817. She began writing early in life, although the prejudices of her times forced her to have her books published anonymously(匿名).
But Jane Austen is perhaps the best known and best loved of Bath's many famous local people and visitors. She paid two long visits here during the last five years of the eighteenth century and from 1801 to 1806, Bath was her home. Her deep knowledge of the city is fully seen in two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, which are largely set in Bath. The city is still very much as Jane Austen knew it, keeping in its streets and public buildings the well-ordered world that she described so well in her novels. Now the pleasure of learning Jane Austen's Bath can be enhanced(增强) by visiting the Jane Austen Centre in Gay Street. Here, in a Georgian town house in the heart of the city, you can find out more about Bath in Jane Austen's time and the importance of Bath in her life and work.

Jane Austen quizzes are offered to keep the children busy.

There seems to be a lot of talk these days about what is fair, and what is not. Most people tend to believe life should be fair. Some of the 99% seem to believe life has somehow treated them unfairly, and some of the 1% feel life hasn't treated them fairly enough. My questions are these: What is fairness? Is life fair? Should life be fair?
We clearly have no choice about how we come into this world. We have little choice early in life. But as we grow older, choices abound. I have long believed that while we have no control over the beginning of our life, the majority of us have the ability to influence the outcomes we get. Fairness is a state of mind, and most often, an unhealthy state of mind. Our state in life cannot, or at least should not, be blamed on our parents, our teachers, or our society—— it's largely based on the choices we make, and the attitudes we adopt.
Life is full of examples of the uneducated, the mentally and physically challenged people born into war-torn areas, who could have complained about life being unfair, but who instead chose a different path. Regardless of the challenges they faced, they had the character to choose contribution rather than complaint.
I agree that challenges exist. I agree that many have an uphill battle due to the severity of the challenges they face. What I disagree with is the attempt to use fairness to solve all problems in the world. Rules and orders don't create fairness, but people's desire and determination can work around most life challenges.
It doesn't matter whether you are born with a silver spoon, plastic spoon, or no spoon at all. A friend of mine came to this country from Africa in his late teens, barely spoke the language, drove a cab while working his way through college, and is now the president of a technology services company. Stories such as this are all around us—— they are not miracles, nor are they the rare exception. They do, however, demonstrate the courage to overcome the mindset of fairness.
28. What is the primary purpose of the passage?
A. To promote “efforts over complaint”.
B. To stress the importance of fairness.
C. To share an inspiring story of a friend.
D. To prove that there are no miracles.
29. What's the writer's attitude towards the mindset of fairness?
A. Supportive. B. Critical.
C. Sympathetic. D. Indifferent.
30. What opinion may the writer agree to?
A. Most of us can have impacts on the results we achieve.
B. Our background determines our choices.
C. People's desire and determination create unfairness.
D. We should depend on fairness to solve all problems.
31. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A. Fairness Is Justice B. Life Is Not Fair—— Deal With It
C. Fairness Comes First D. Cry for Fairness
D
Jason, a straight-A student from the University of Pennsylvania, uses the term “pseudo-working” to describe how many of us study. The pseudo-worker looks and feels like someone who is working hard—— he or she spends a long time in the library and is not afraid to push on late into the night—— but, because of a lack of focus and concentration, he or she doesn't actually accomplish much.
This phenomenon can be seen in most colleges. For example, at Dartmouth there was a section of the main library that was open twenty-four hours a day and the students I used to see in there late at night crowded in groups, drinking coffee, were definitely pseudo-working.
By placing themselves in distracting environments and insisting on working long hours, these students are damaging their brain's ability to think clearly and efficiently to accomplish the task at hand. In the end they get half the results with twice the effort.
The bigger problem here is that most students don't even realize that they' re pseudo-working. To them pseudo-working is work—— it's how they' ve always done it, and it's how all of their friends do it. It never crosses their mind that there might be a better way. Straight-A students, on the other hand, know all about pseudo-working. They fear it, and for good reason it not only wastes time, but it's also mentally tiring.
In fact, the most important skill in becoming a better student is the ability to get work done quickly and with a minimum of wasted effort. Some cognitive science research concludes that about 50 minutes is the optimal learning period to maximize the material learned per time unit.
So how can students manage to study efficiently? One key factor is captured in the following simple formula: work accomplished= time spent× intensity of focus. Pseudo-working features a very low intensity of focus. Therefore, to accomplish something by pseudo-working, you need to spend a lot of time. The straight-A approach, on the other hand, maximizes intensity in order to minimize time.
32. What is a pseudo-worker described as?
A. A poor monitor. B. An effective learner.
C. A damaging cheater. D. An inefficient learner.
33. What may result from pseudo-working?
A. Distracting straight-A students.
B. Finishing task with less time.
C. Mental exhaustion with little achievement.
D. Decreased IQ.
34. What does the underlined word “optimal” in paragraph 5. mean?
A. Longest. B. Best. C. Least. D. Shortest.
35. Why does the author mention the formula in the last paragraph?
A. To show the benefit of working hard.
B. To emphasize the importance of concentration.
C. To prove the necessity of accomplishing work.
D. To explain the reason for spending much time.

After filling out fifty applications, going through four interviews, and winning one offer, I took what I could get——a teaching job at what I considered a distant wild area: western New Jersey. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen— teaching English literature.
School started. I was teaching English literature. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class who were only six years younger than me. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love for written word. But the students only threw spitballs(纸团) and whispered dirty words in the back of the classroom.
In my opinion, I had thought that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students perfect lecturing. But in fact, humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seem to be reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my supervisor, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise.
My boss sat in the back of the classroom. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn't happening and went on talking and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes, he left silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes. I felt mildly proud that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period, I knew I had to face him.
