At 57, my body wobbled, but my mind was also in worse shape. After 25 years writing about travel, I wanted to wake up my mind. I chose to train as a London Blue Badge (徽章) guide. The course costs about £ 13,000 and lasts 18 months, but it mixed my love of history with a new job.
The Blue Badge began in 1951 after the war, so visitors could trust trained guides. Today only these 500 guides may lead tours inside big sights like Westminster Abbey or the Tower.
Our class had 32 people of all ages from China, Brazil, Portugal, Turkey, Ukraine and many parts of the U. K. We had lectures twice a week, weekend walks and day trips to Canterbury and Stonehenge. People say the course is as hard as the taxi drivers’ “Knowledge”.
My head filled with dates, kings, church styles, museum times and pub prices. I can now count the buttons on a guard’s coat, the steps up St Paul’s and the date of the last frost fair on the Thames. Before this, I had never been inside the National Gallery; now I love talking about Van Eyck, Vigée Le Brun and Seurat.
The hardest part was guiding on a moving coach. I had to point out buildings clearly — “the grey one on the right with white windows” — without sounding like a satellite navigation (卫星导航). After many talks and three retakes I passed and received my badge. I almost cried.
I still write, but now I also show visitors around London. Most are cheerful Americans who ask fun questions: Is the King at home? Why do police ride horses? Do the guards’ hats really use bear fur? Answering makes me see the city fresh again. As Dr Johnson said, “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life.”
4. What does the underlined word “wobbled” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Weakened. B. Shook. C. Recovered. D. Balanced.
5. What does the author imply by mentioning the taxi drivers’ “Knowledge”?
A. The course required excellent driving skills. B. The training was relatively difficult.
C. The guides must know the city streets well. D. The course focused on practical tests.
6. What was the author’s biggest challenge during the training?
A. Memorizing a massive amount of facts. B. Affording the expensive course fee.
C. Commenting on sights from a moving bus. D. Competing with younger classmates.
7. How does the author feel about her new career?
A. It is financially rewarding. B. It has renewed her viewpoint.
C. It is less stressful than writing. D. It satisfies her love for art.
C
A few years ago, I walked into Panera and placed my order. After I paid and filled my plastic cup with water, I walked further into the cafe to find a seat. As I sat down, I noticed that at the table next to me, there was an older man with a cap eating his soup alone. The chair in front of him was empty; he wasn’t saving the seat. He was eating all alone. As this fact settled in, a feeling of sadness began to wash over me. Why was he eating alone? Was he lonely? Did he want someone to keep him company?
This wasn’t the first time I’d felt sad when I noticed someone eating alone. I don’t like being alone very much, so I don’t like seeing people eat alone. I automatically assume they’re lonely and need someone to be there for them.
For some reason, eating with other people is the norm. Modern society has evolved (进化) to the point where most people eat with others and do almost every activity together. If we need to get lunch before a class, we’d rather ask around to see if someone will come with us. But is it possible we just don’t want to appear lonely?
For me, it’s easy to feel pressured to have to be around other people when I see everyone else around me accompanied by a friend almost all the time. So many people are always around someone else, and that may make people think we always need someone with us to feel better about ourselves.
But that’s not true. We can enjoy being alone — not everyone needs to be constantly surrounded by friends to be happy. And we shouldn’t be afraid to eat alone if that’s what we want to do. We don’t have to do what everyone else does.
Ultimately, I don’t think I’ll ever not get sad if I see someone eating alone, but I’ll bear in mind that maybe they just want a break from the world, or maybe they prefer it that way. It’s important to realize seeing someone doing something alone doesn’t always mean they’re lonely.
8. What was the author’s initial feeling seeing the man alone?
A. Deep curiosity about his story. B. A strong sense of pity for him.
C. Embarrassment for staring at him. D. Admiration for his courage.
9. What is the author’s opinion on social pressure according to paragraph 5?
A. It is necessary for building friendships. B. It is unavoidable in modern society.
C. It is unnecessary and misleading. D. It is helpful for self-improvement.
10. What does the author finally realize?
A. People shouldn’t expect others’ company. B. Being alone doesn’t equal loneliness.
C. Society’s norms withstand the test of time. D. Personal preference is less important.
11. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Why We Feel Sorry for Others B. A Sad Memory: Story in a Café
C. Eating Alone: Rethinking Its Meaning D. How to Avoid Social Pressure with Others
D
Repeated exposure (接触) to heatwaves, which are growing more frequent due to climate change, may speed up ageing, particularly among manual (体力) workers, a new study warns.
Although previous research showed heatwaves had negative effects on the health of older people, it primarily focused on short-term exposure to constant heat. The new study, published in the journal Nature Climate Change, assessed the potential long-term impact of heatwaves on health and ageing.
Researchers analysed data from 24,922 adult people with an average biological age of 46 years to assess how heatwaves influenced ageing. They defined rapid ageing as the difference between biological and actual age and assessed its association with heatwave exposure. Biological age shows how old your body seems based on its actual health and condition, which can be different from your age in years. If your body’s age is higher than your actual age, you are more likely to get sick.
By analysing patient data from 2008 to 2022, the researchers discovered that the more time people spent in heatwaves, the more their bodies aged.
Though the participants appeared to adapt to heatwave conditions over the 15-year period, the harmful health effects did not disappear. Manual workers, rural residents and people in communities with fewer air conditioning units were more likely to be impacted by heatwaves on ageing, the study found.
The findings suggest people living in places that experience more days of high heat show greater biological ageing on average than those in cooler regions. “Here we analysed data from 24,922 adults and used linear mixed models (线性混合模型) to show heatwaves speed up ageing,” the researchers said.
The above findings carry significant applications and can be used to inform practical actions. Thus, based on the research findings, researchers are urging governments to make sure everyone is equally protected from heatwaves and to help communities handle them better, especially among at-risk groups.
12. What makes the new study different from previous research?
A. It has a larger and diverse research team.
B. It studied a much larger group of participants.
C. It examined heat’s immediate effects on people.
D. It focused on the long-term impact of heatwaves.
13. Who is most affected by heatwaves in terms of ageing according to the study?
A. Office workers in air-conditioned buildings.
B. People living in cold northern regions.
C. Those who do physical work outdoors.
D. Young adults with good medical care.
14. How did researchers prove that heatwaves speed up ageing?
A. By asking people how old they felt.
B. By testing new cooling technologies.
C. By tracking biological age changes in adults.
D. By measuring body temperature during heatwaves.
15. What’s the author’s attitude towards the study’s conclusions?
A. Dismissive. B. Critical. C. Doubtful. D. Favorable.

When I first moved into my new cottage in Scotland, I discovered it came with an unexpected surprise: a small plot in the community garden. With a house full of unpacked boxes, the last thing I wanted was to care for the plot. I saw the garden as a problem, something I could safely ignore.
One afternoon, to avoid the mess indoors, I decided to take a walk to see this garden. It was a lively place. Neighbors were chatting and tending to their land. I found my plot, Number Seven. It looked lonely and abandoned, filled with weeds and a few big, deep holes. In one corner stood a shed (棚子) that was falling apart. Seeing its state only confirmed my decision: I wasn’t going to touch it.
My presence didn’t go unnoticed. An elderly man from the next plot stopped his digging and looked over. “You must be the new owner of Bert’s cottage,” he said. I nodded. He pointed at the holes. “Old Bert, the previous owner, loved digging. Said he was looking for treasure.” Then he came up closer, lowering his voice. “Some folks say Bert was convinced that an ancient, kind-hearted giant slept under our village. He believed these deep holes would let the giant hear our laughter and stories, which would keep him happy and the soil rich. He called them ‘listening holes’.”
I was taken aback, staring at the holes with a new sense of unease. Just then, a cheerful woman named Eleanor came out of a nearby shed, carrying a pot of tea. “Oh, don’t listen to his tales!” she laughed. She explained that Bert was a kind man who loved a good story more than he loved weeding. After that, we just all laughed.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
After that day, I often walked to the neighbors’ garden.

Dear George,
I’m so excited to hear that you’re planning a trip to China this winter! Based on your interest in history and culture, I’d suggest a classic itinerary: Beijing and Xi’an.
Start your journey in Beijing, the capital city. You can spend three to four days visiting iconic sites like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Temple of Heaven. Don’t miss tasting Beijing Roast Duck — it’s a must! Then, take a high-speed train (around 4-5 hours) to Xi’an, one of the oldest cities in China. Here, the Terracotta Warriors will absolutely amaze you. You can also cycle on the ancient City Wall, and try various local snacks.
Both cities offer a mix of ancient culture and modern convenience. I’m sure you’ll have a wonderful and memorable experience. Let me know if you need more specific recommendations!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】例文
After that day, I often walked to the neighbors’ garden. The fresh smell of wet earth and the quiet sounds of work became a nice habit. I would drink tea with those lovely neighbors, who told me more about Bert’s weird habits. Other neighbors showed me the birds that visited. Bit by bit, the garden stopped being a problem and became an interesting place. I saw how the morning sun made the drops of water on a spiderweb shine over one of the holes. It no longer felt lonely, just quiet and waiting.
One sunny morning, I found myself buying a pair of gardening gloves. Later, I walked to Plot Seven, and this time, I didn’t just stand outside the fence. I opened the gate. The neighbors saw me and gave me an encouraging smile. I took a deep breath and started pulling up the first weed. I wasn’t just cleaning a garden; I was opening the first chapter of my own story. And I was ready to show my neighbors my stories and integrate into the warm community.
