People usually wash their produce before eating to remove residue (残留) from pesticides. But are your fruits and vegetables really clean enough to eat? 14-year-old Sirish Subash from Georgia has won the 2024 3M Young Scientist Challenge for inventing an AI-based handheld pesticide detector called PestiSCAND that is very accurate in detecting pesticide residue.
Now in its 17th year, the Challenge supports middle school students to think creatively and apply STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) principles to discover real-world solutions. When the finalists are chosen, they are paired with a 3M scientist who guides them over the summer to help turn their ideas from just concepts to prototypes (雏形).
Sirish spent four months competing against nine other finalists and secured his win at the final challenge events at 3M’s global headquarters in St. Paul, Minnesota that were held on October 14 and 15, 2024. The finalists had to traverse a series of interactive challenges and were evaluated on their innovation, application of STEM, as well as their ability to inspire others.
Sirish’s journey to winning the award came from watching his mother washing vegetables and fruits and reminding him to always do so. He wondered whether washing actually made a difference. Since 70 percent of the produce in the US has pesticide residue that is linked to illnesses like cancer, it’s very important to know if the fruits and vegetables are safe to eat. That’s what PestiSCAND is designed to do.
The device works by shining light on the surface of the produce and measuring the wavelengths that bounce (反射) back. Sirish tested the device on more than 12,000 foods including strawberries, apples and tomatoes. PestiSCAND uses a sensor and AI-based processor to achieve an accuracy of over 85 percent. Sirish aims at making this technology widely accessible so that consumers will be able to make safe food choices. But he still believes you should wash your produce anyway.
4. What is the function of PestiSCAND?
A. To treat cancer. B. To clean vegetables.
C. To detect pesticide residue. D. To promote the growth of fruits.
5. What does the underlined word “traverse” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Note down. B. Give up.
C. Miss out. D. Get through.
6. What can we learn from the text?
A. Sirish put a lot of effort into his invention.
B. PestiSCAND came on the market last year.
C. Sirish’s mother was strict about his education.
D. The 3M scientists mustn’t provide help for the finalists.
7. What does Sirish suggest people do?
A. Order a piece of PestiSCAND.
B. Wash produce before eating it.
C. Buy fresh produce as often as possible.
D. Enter as many competitions as they can.

When homework and tests keep you up late at night, you may plan to make up for your lost sleep during the weekends. But is it useful?
A study published in the journal Current Biology shows that the habit of sleeping in on weekends doesn’t fix the damage that has been done by a lack of sleep during the week. Even worse, it may damage your health.
In the study, which was conducted over 10 days, 36 healthy young men and women with different sleep requirements were divided into three groups. The first group were asked to sleep nine hours a night and the second group five hours a night. The members of the third group slept for five hours on weekdays but rested as long as they wanted on the weekend.
The researchers found that people who lacked sleep ate more snacks and gained weight quickly. However, this wasn’t the case for the first group. That could be partially due to the shifting of the biological clock and changes to certain body hormones, especially hunger hormones. In order to catch up on their sleep during weekends, people in the third group would eat later as a habit. So their biological clocks shifted, which also changed the production of hunger hormones.
“The hormone leptin (瘦素) decreases appetite (胃口), while the hormone ghrelin (胃饥饿素) increases appetite,” explained US researcher Vsevolod Polotsky. “Sleep shortage causes the leptin to drop and the ghrelin to rise, so you’re hungry and eat more.”
And even if they tried to sleep for as long as they wanted to during weekends, according to researchers, it was still not enough because they found it difficult to fall asleep.
Moreover, short and insufficient sleep schedules will lead to an inability to change blood sugar and increase the risk of metabolic (新陈代谢) disease in the long term.
8. What do we know about the study?
A. Participants were divided into two groups. B. Researchers studied 36 children and adults.
C. It lasted for more than two weeks. D. Each group follow different sleep requirements.
9. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Sleeping in on weekends can make up for the lost sleep during weekdays effectively.
B. The imbalance of hunger hormones may contribute to weight gain among sleep-deprived people.
C. All the participants in the study gained weight quickly during the 10-day research.
D. Short sleep only has a negative influence on people's physical health in the short term.
10. Why may people without enough sleep eat more?
A. They need to create more energy. B. There is less leptin in their bodies.
C. They have a lower blood sugar. D. Their bodies produce less hormones.
11. What can be a suitable title for this passage?
A. Appetite Affects Our Sleep Quality B. Sleeping in Causes Weight Loss
C. Catching up on Sleep Harms Our Body D. Men and Women Sleep Differently
D
Suppose you’re preparing for a tennis match. Your mind wanders, envisioning every possible outcome. Do you picture yourself in control? Or does your imagination toy with the idea of failure? The answer matters because it could affect your confidence and, ultimately, how well you will perform in the upcoming match. Although people don’t take such moments spent in their imagination as seriously as they should, it can be just as vital as any physical practice, directly impacting your chances of success.
This is especially the case in high-pressure situations where what’s happening inside your mind outweighs what’s happening outside. Your imagination shapes how you interpret the world around you and is capable of causing the same physiological (生理的) and emotional responses that are caused by external, real-life events. To take just one example, just as emotional pictures and sounds can cause the pupils to widen, so can emotional mental images in the mind.
Another phenomenon highlighting the significance of the imagination is called functional equivalence, which refers to the way the brain doesn’t always distinguish between imagining an action and physically doing it. For instance, when athletes vividly imagine running a race or sinking a basket, their brain scans reveal that the same neural circuits (神经回路) are activated as if they were physically performing the task. Other research with athletes using functional MRI (磁共振成像) has shown that mental practice engages regions of the brain involved in controlling the body and also activates areas linked to focus, motivation and emotional regulation.
The principle of functional equivalence extends beyond sports. In one study, pianists were asked to picture moving their fingers across the keys, hearing the tune, and seeing the sheet music. Astonishingly, the same motor areas in their brains lit up as when they actually played.
Many studies like this have proved the connection between mental imagery and realworld performance. Whether you’re aiming to build confidence or prepare for a challenge, using your imagination with more intention could make all the difference. The key is to switch your mental channel to an image of capability, control and empowerment.
12. How does the author start the text?
A. By giving a definition. B. By explaining an opinion.
C. By presenting a context. D. By sharing an experience.
13. In which aspect is mental imagery the same as actual occurrences according to the text?
A. Requiring body movements. B. Initiating visual stimulations.
C. Affecting physical functions. D. Causing emotional responses.
14. In which case may functional equivalence occur?
A. A learner conducts a discussion with a professor.
B. A doctor envisions the procedure of an operation.
C. A pianist videos finger movements for perfection.
D. A speaker practices a deep breath before a speech.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Positive emotion brightens your life B. Mental imagery boosts your success
C. Imagination enhances your creativity D. Physical practice unlocks your potential
第二节 七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Most individuals have some free time each day.____16____ Yet plenty waste it mindlessly on smartphones and social media, and thus seldom make real progress or achieve their life goals.
In recent decades, many researchers have studied self-made millionaires and successful individuals from different fields. They carry out long-term surveys and in-depth analyses to dig out their secrets to success. ____17____ One widely recognized habit is the “Five‑Hour Rule”, a typical symbol of efficient self-management. This rule requires individuals to spend one hour each day purposely on learning, thinking and reflecting, five days a week.
____18____ Benjamin Franklin, the famous American statesman and scientist, was one of the earliest and most typical followers of this idea. He set aside a full hour every morning to read, study and create, and even built a community to share knowledge with like‑minded people. Today, top achievers like Satya Nadella, Warren Buffett still stick to this rule strictly in their daily lives. Such commitment over time brings about lasting and substantial rewards in their life journey.
The core of the Five-Hour Rule is to keep daily focused learning amid a busy schedule, rather than cramming knowledge at the last minute. It rejects passive and aimless learning and advocates targeted self-improvement.____19____ It enriches your knowledge, sharpens your skills and builds self-discipline to support long-term success.
How can you put this rule into daily practice easily? Here are three simple and practical tips. First, choose a proper learning method that suits you. Reading is a common alternative, but it is far from the only way. Turn to different learning tools, apply what you have learned to real life and reflect on your experiences daily. ____20____ These small but consistent steps make the rule work in daily life.
A. Early achievers shared such a similar habit.
B. It steadily promotes effective and lifelong self-improvement.
C. Quite a few people expect to make the most of free time to grow.
D. Such forced dull reading rarely brings lasting and real self-improvement.
E Genuinely successful people hold this daily deep self-reflection in high regard.
F. This in-depth study obviously uncovers their true secrets to lifelong achievement.
G. Proper learning tools boost steady growth and lifelong personal fulfillment effectively.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a new school filled with unfamiliar faces, Charlie felt like a fish out of water. The lively chatter of students around him only fueled his loneliness. Every day, he walked through the hallways feeling invisible and trapped in uncertainty. To escape this loneliness, Charlie turned to video games, where he became a hero battling monsters and saving kingdoms. In this digital world, he felt powerful and important, unlike his quiet life at school.
Ms. Rita, his literature teacher, noticed the quiet boy at the back of the classroom, often lost in his thoughts. She had a gift for connecting with her students, always offering kind words or warm smiles. Although she encouraged Charlie to share his feelings, he hid his struggles, preferring the company of imaginary friends in his games, where he found the appreciation that was missing in his real life.
Recently, Charlie became hooked on a new game. One Sunday evening, he immersed himself in its colorful world, ignoring his mother’s reminders to sleep. Excited by his adventures, he remained awake, thinking about strategies, which left him anxious and tired for school.
The next day, unable to resist the temptation, Charlie secretly packed his gaming machine in his backpack. In Ms. Rita’s class, his heart raced, not from the lesson on poetry, but from the thought of playing during breaks. While other students engaged in discussions about finding something valuable in life, Charlie’s mind was focused on the game hidden in his bag.
When the discussion opened up, he took the chance to peek at his gaming machine. As he powered it on, the screen flashed with new quests, and he lost track of his surroundings. Unfortunately, just as he was concentrating, the gaming machine slipped from his hands and crashed to the floor with a loud sound. Silence enveloped the classroom, and all eyes turned towards him, the weight of anxiety and tension heavy in the air.

A Note down. B. Give up.
C. Miss out.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. B 11. C

根据第五段中的“Sleep shortage causes the leptin to drop and the ghrelin to rise, so you’re hungry and eat more. (睡眠不足会导致瘦素下降,胃饥饿素上升,所以你会感到饥饿,吃得更多。)”可知,睡眠不足的人吃得更多是因为体内的瘦素减少了。故选B项。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段中的“A study published in the journal Current Biology shows that the habit of sleeping in on weekends doesn’t fix the damage that has been done by a lack of sleep during the week.
【答案】12. C 13. D 14. B 15. B

Most individuals have some free time each day.____16____ Yet plenty waste it mindlessly on smartphones and social media and thus seldom make real progress or achieve their life goals.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1

She urged the other students to work on their search for valuable things in life, adding that every perspective mattered. Her unexpected joke transformed the moment, and laughter erupted in the classroom, saving Charlie from embarrassment and easing his anxiety. In that instant, his heart began to lighten, feeling warmth instead of shame.
Paragraph 2
Grateful while guilty Charlie approached Ms. Rita’s office after school. He expressed his thanks for her forgiveness while admitting to his distraction during class. He recognized the need to balance his passion for gaming and study. Ms. Rita listened attentively, and returned his console with a smile. She encouraged him to join the school’s e-sports club, suggesting that combining his interest with social involvement help him connect with others. In that moment, Ms. Rita’s forgiveness and understanding melted his heart, inspiring him to embrace both his passion and the journey of building new friendships.
