RD:What’s the oldest joke in the world?
“We can’t know the oldest joke in the world because it would have existed earlier than writing,” says Christie Davies, professor of sociology at the University of Reading in the UK.The oldest joke book that’s been found so far is the Greek Philogelos. It dates from the 19th century CE,although the jokes date from an earlier time.According to psychologist Steve Wilson, director of National Humour Month (April in the US),it contains 265 jokes.
RD:Do any people fail to develop a sense of humour?
Rod Martin, professor of psychology at the Western University in Canada, believes that while everyone is born without a sense of humour,as we develop, humour and laughter begin to appear.“Of course, some children are more serious, quiet, and less likely to laugh frequently, but this doesn’t mean they don’t have a sense of humour.” And according to Steve Wilson, there are no adults who don’t have a sense of humour.“Almost everyone is able to develop a sense of humour, and I teach people how,” he says.
RD:Do people share a sense of humour unique to their own nation?

The night before my math test,I felt like I couldn’t do anything right. All I wanted to do was skip school.I didn’t feel prepared.I was so stressed out from balancing soccer and school.Although I studied for over 5 hours reviewing everything,I went to sleep with a feeling that I was going to fail.I hate failure. It’s the worst feeling ever. What was wrong with me?I should have believed in myself and expected to get an A,but my mind was in a different direction. The next morning,I walked to school not ready to conquer this day.
I got into the exam room and forgot almost everything that I studied. It disappeared from my mind like dropping cotton candy into water.I felt dizzy. It was like I could see myself in the future fearing the moment when I finally got my score.I decided to take a bathroom break. It might help me cool off and get everything I studied back into my mind.It didn’t work.Standing in the bathroom I felt as if I was never going to succeed. But I had to return to the room.At last,I just wrote down as much as I knew and turned in my test.
After the test I heard everyone else in the class saying how easy the test was.My eyes twitched(抽动) and I felt a tear flowing down. Why did I have anxiety? Why couldn’t I be normal?
I texted my parents, saying I was a failure. They replied,“I’m sorry you didn’t do well. But you can’t always be perfect.Doing your best is all that matters.” I learned a lesson from what they said,I guess.I can’t always be perfect. It’s important to study hard, but I shouldn’t stick to perfectionism.Having a positive mentality is the main way I will get a good grade.Science test tomorrow and I will think positive.

The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries:China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River in China and the Hindu River in India. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture.Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn’t have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences.Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic language while the Western languages are mostly based on the Latin system.Other causes like human race differences count as well. But what’s more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people’s ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of the 21st century more colorful. The cultural difference should not be the obstacle(障碍) to the civilization of human beings. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.
8.What is the text mainly about?
A.The origin of cultures.
B.Language systems.
C.Cultural differences.
D.The colorful world.
9.Why is the American culture similar to the European culture?
A.Both of the two cultures have a very long history.
B.They have the same mother river as the Chinese culture.
C.The early settlers from Britain brought their culture to America.
D.Both the British and the American live along the coast of the Atlantic Ocean.
