The art collector wanted to buy the saucer the cat used, so he pretended to buy the cat and thought the store owner would agree to give him the saucer. However, the store owner knew everyone wanted to buy the saucer and he made money by selling the cat.
The so-called “clever” art collector was fooled by the “cunning” store owner.

The author describes the story in a simple and casual way at the beginning and the readers may expect that the art collector would buy the saucer. But the real purpose of the store owner is to make money by the saucer. Therefore, what the store owner did is beyond our expectation which makes the story unexpected and funny.

An art collector noticed a cat lapping milk from a saucer in the doorway of a store. He realized that it was an antique and very valuable. He decided to buy the cat and offered to pay 200 dollars in the end. Then he asked the store owner to throw in the saucer, but the owner refused to give it away for he had sold 68 cats because of this lucky saucer. ( possible version )

The contrast between Watson’s professional
deduction starting with “according to...” and Holmes’ simple but direct answer “someone has stolen our tent”.
Dr. Watson made so many reasonable inferences based on his knowledge but failed to deduce their tent was stolen.
Lots of continuous tenses like “had been going wrong” are used to emphasise the man’s long-time depression, which makes it funny when readers know the man is the clown.
An amazing clown who could make others laugh couldn’t make himself laugh.
